Ryan Phillippe’s rep does damage control: he’s not quitting acting

Yesterday Page Six reported that Ryan told them at the Tribeca Film Festival that he was going to move to NY for four months out of the year and that he was thinking about quitting acting. He’s quoted as saying “I think I’m going to end my acting career. I’m so introverted. I’m ready to be behind the scenes. I’m 36, but I’ve been doing this for 20 years.” Ryan’s rep was probably freaking out over that, and has put out statements that Ryan isn’t retiring, although they’ve given conflicting reasons for that:

Ryan’s comments about leaving Hollywood were taken out of context, his rep tells Gossip Cop… “He’s not retiring from acting anytime soon,” his rep confirms to Gossip Cop.

“He’s been talking about expanding his talents to producing and directing, but he has no plans to stop acting nor did he ever say that he was considering doing so,” his rep told Access.

So which was it, were Ryan’s comments taken out of context or did The Post make up those quotes? It’s not like they’re saying that Ryan didn’t talk to The Post.

On our Ryan Phillippe story yesterday we had a lot of people defending the guy. Most of the comments came from just two people, one using multiple aliases, (which isn’t allowed, read the information in bold), and both of whom have histories of only commenting on Ryan and Reese’s stories. (You can see my comment on that story for more details.) Those same people also have made quite a few negative comments on stories about Reese.

Ryan told Ellen Degeneres that his mom regularly reads the blogs and asks him why he has such a bad reputation. So I guess it’s not surprising that Ryan has some pretty staunch defenders on the blogs who are either superfans or related to him. Poor Ryan, he says and does things he regrets and then relies on other people to clarify what he really meant. He needs to give Ben Affleck a call and ask for some advice on how to make his next move. Ben’s scandal was minor too, but people really disliked the guy for a long time after the J.Lo fiasco. It took him a while to recover.

Ryan is shown on 4/21/11 in NY and on 4/8/11 outside a club in London. Credit: WENN.com

    Wasn’t me, lol!

I think it’s funny that Ryan still has his fans to defend him NO MATTER what he does or says. No matter what the pattern of his past behavior tends to indicate (i.e. that the douche is strong in this one) or any flippancy he has when talking about pretty much anything other than himself. It’s crazy what people will believe coming from a cute face.

Would he be missed? I’m confused as to why he thinks anyone cares.

Ryan was excellent in Lincoln Lawyer. He should do more roles like this – complex, driven, FLAWED. He is excellent at FLAWED characters. People believe it.

Talk to Ethan Hawke about rehabilitating your reputation. That guy bonked the nanny for crying out loud.

I’ve always thought he was a good actor and I’ve never seen him turn in a bad performance…

Would I have a relationship with him? Probably not…

    Would I hit that?

    OH…HECKY YEA!!!

I don’t really get all the Ryan hate either. He isn’t a saint for sure, but there are FAR bigger scumbags out there than Ryan Phillippe

    This.

I have never got the interest in him. He’s boring and I don’t think he’s cute.

  9. sandy says:

well, i like him, as an actor he’s really good, i would miss him, so this is good news, no one is perfect, he’s not a fame seeker, minds his own business, and is very good looking, loves his children,he’s private about his life, he’s single, he’s harmless.

I’m always amazed when bloggers claim they’ve been attacked by commenters who disagree with them or that any fan is a delusional “superfan.” Can dish it out, but you can’t take it. Clearly you think anyone disagreeing with you needs to be “outed.” I only commented once, but I stand but what I said…and I’m not related to RP.

I’m not sure what the point is with saying someone always makes comments on one particular celebrity. It seems the same goes for AJ/BP and JA stories. As particular fans of certain celebrities, it would make sense they’d always comment on those stories, and the view is always going to be positive or negative, depending on how they feel about that celebrity.

  12. Shy says:

I’m not related to him too. And I too don’t understand all that hate from Lainey and Celebitchy towards Ryan. I personally had a crush on him after I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions. I’m not the diehard fan who will come to his every movie but still feel sympathy.

He has a douchebag face. We all know that. I think THAT is the main reason why some bloggers dislike him 🙂 But I don’t know. I think that you are too harsh for him. I don’t remember him being arrested for drunk driving or be cocked out. The are celebrities out there who are more bad.

But it’s like with Jennifer Aniston. We hate her and no matter what she will do we will always hate her and any her move 🙂 It’s the same with LaineyGossip and Celebitchy towards Ryan. No matter what he will do – you’ll always hate him and will use that info to spin your hate. You can’t help it just the same way I can’t help myself with Aniston 🙂

That Page Six interview probably coincided with Reese’s wedding and he realized how a douche he has been all those 20 years.
If he leaves acting that’s one less thorn among the reeds.
