Rachel McAdams in red lace Marchesa in Cannes: gorgeous or meh?

These are some photos from last night’s opening premiere film, Midnight in Paris. Oddly enough, there was no Carla Bruni, no Sarko. But there was Rachel McAdams and her Welsh lover, Michael Sheen. And they actually stood together on the red carpet! Nice. It’s not like they were super-affectionate or anything, but still. At least they didn’t actively avoid each other. As for Rachel’s dress… meh. I kind of hate it, honestly. It’s Marchesa. It just… doesn’t suit her. Eh. Too lacy, too much fabric. Disappointing after I loved her photo call dress so much.

They’ve remained coy about their romance – in spite of being spotted mid-smooch – but Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen made their red carpet debut as a couple Wednesday at the Cannes International Film Festival.

“She’s a genuinely lovely lady as well as being stunningly beautiful and very talented,” Sheen, 42, told Entertainment Tonight Canada of McAdams, his costar in the Woody Allen-directed comedy Midnight in Paris, which is showing at the festival.

The actress, 34 – who was recently spotted wearing a ring on her wedding finger – isn’t engaged to Sheen, but she recently talked to Elle about her hopes for a “fairy-tale romance.”

“[My parents are] still together and still in love,” she said. “I’m very blessed that way. I had a great example of love in front of me, and that’s probably what makes me such a romantic.”

McAdams chose a Marchesa dress for the debut, which had a five-foot train that trailed the steps as she climbed to the theater. At ease and in sync with his date, Sheen bent down to straighten it out for her when she stopped to wave to the crowds.

[From People]

Aw, that’s sweet that he was looking after her train (probably couldn’t keep his eyes off of her cute ass, but whatev). But it’s nice that they’ve “come out” as a couple officially. Too bad Rachel wore a bad dress for the occasion. There are worse things, however. It could have been a Jolie-esque glittery sack. I’m sure we’ll be seeing one of those later!

Oh.. I have an urge to run up to her and rip off the whole flouncy/sheer disaster (sleeves, the train!??) attached to the body of the dress. Awful, just awful. Looks like courtains in a cheap bordello.

  2. Pix says:

That dress is disgusting. I hate it SO much. Still, she looks beautiful and happy. Her hair color is fantastic. On another note, Michael Sheen looks much better with facial hair–not so elfish and goofy.

  3. saintdevil says:

Props to the designers for creating a dress which makes a gorgeous woman look like a slump-shouldered frump…

  4. kazoo says:

she’s so pretty. i like her & hope she continues to do well.

    i don’t get marchesa.

  5. Angela says:

Definitely meh. Not just this dress, but Rachel McAdama in general.

  6. brin says:

Horrible….a real disappointment after her pretty white dress yesterday.

  7. lucy2 says:

I hate that dress! It’s distracting and not at all flattering.

  8. I think the dress could have worked if she wasn’t carrying the train around, it looked so awkward. But really forget the dress, those shoes! My goodness, hideous. Where did she get those from? Ann Taylor 4 years ago??

  9. merski says:

Don’t get it. Why have a train if you’re just gonna carry it around in your hand? o_0

  10. Waldemar says:

Ah! now I get the dig at Marchesa in the Uma post.

Is that a cape (made of netting!!)? The whole thing looks horrid.

  11. Lauren says:

She looks gorgeous..glowing..must be Michael. Rachel was brave to wear that dress.

  12. really says:

NO NO and NO. STOP: Rachel McAdams has the nerve to ruin her pretty face and sexy hair-dew with that “slut of 42nd street” hooker dress, JUST WRONG.

  13. Jackson says:

Ugh. No. Nothing good can come from using red lace.

  14. Sisi says:

    She wearing a mosquito net…

  15. Nanea says:

Is having to wear Marchesa the public equivalent of Harvey’s casting couch?

    Or is it replacing it?

If it’s the second option, I’m all for it, no matter how ugly, contrived and uninspiring those dresses are.

  16. DoMaJoReMc says:

    Who dressed her? KHate Gosselin?

  17. harfang says:

Actually, what… I think it’s Heather?… at Fug calls the consumptive-w.hore trend in figure skating wear and other clothing is kind of a relief on McAdams. It relieves the otherwise undiluted mean-girl-of-doom look.

Oh gawd, I just figured it out. I look at her “smile” and this is what I hear:”Transfer to Washington. Transfer to Jefferson. No one at Westerberg is going to let you play their reindeer games.” …And yes I did have to look that up, I’m not completely gone. xD

  18. your mama says:

It would be perfect in the following scenario: a) with a glass of wine in one hand b) Shorter! Forget having to hold the dress. c) in a bedroom / b/c honey, that looks like lingerie to me.

  19. You don't say says:

That concoction is just unfortunate. I love red and I love lace, but that combination is just wrong.

  20. shockedandappalled says:

She looks so beautiful, but that dress is hideous. Looks like a figure skating costume. Marchesa is so often tacky. Ugh.

  21. Marianne says:

I don’t like that she has to carry the train in her hand, otherwise I think it was a very daring and sexy dress on her. They should have just cut the dress right above the knee or something.

  22. Eve says:

I have yet to see a Marchesa dress I don’t find tacky and vulgar.

  23. blackswan says:

Minus the trail and sleeves, yes.

  24. wtf? says:

please rachel, do not turn into kate hudson, i like you.

  25. Judy says:

When I first saw that dress, I groaned, but it’s so funky that I kinda like it on her. What I really love are her shoes…thank gawd they aren’t platforms.

  26. Delta Juliet says:

That is one hideous dress. I can’t remember ever feeling so stongly about hating an article of clothing.

  27. Glyrics says:

Fug dress, fake hair, big mouth

    Not at all attractive!

  28. Melissa says:

She is so beautiful, but ya, not feeling that dress.

  29. malachais says:

She looks like a goddess to me, reminds me of old Hollywood. The train and sleeves make the dress look a bit weird, but she looks stunning overall.

  30. dovesgate says:

I dislike the train, which I personally feel belongs on wedding dresses alone. It could have been a lovely dress otherwise.

  31. Kasey says:

I so adore Rachel McAdams and I so badly want to like and approve this dress. I so fervently stared at it from various angles hoping to feel some warmth for it. Alas! It didn’t happen and I’m not feeling it.

I will say that I agree with Marianne. If the dress stopped at the bottom of the lace and had no fly-away flutter sleeves but was a tank-style instead, I think she would have been rocking something unique. As it is, the train is ridiculous and carrying it on her arm ruins the possibility of it being “passable”. Nonetheless, I’m glad for whatever Rachel McAdams posts I can get!

  32. Ellie says:

    Ick! Ugly!

  33. Cheyenne says:

Meh? Yuck is more like it.

  35. RHONYC says:

my 6th grade best friend minerva’s mom had the almost identical dining room curtains.

    no kidding. 😉

  36. Solveig says:

Big NO. Probably without that awful lace border it would be a decent dress, probably.
    Hm, no.
She should dye her hair red-brown, as a blonde she’s bland.

  37. skibunny says:

    beautiful woman, ugly dress

  38. Ron says:

Ghastly! GHASTLY! It looks like a really bad garment district quininera dress. Just whne you think you’ve seen the worst dress ever, Marchesa makes another dress.

  39. X says:

    Love the dress.

  40. sandy says:

love her, she is fresh looking, dress? not so much, she still shines through.

  41. Heatherrr says:

What, not ONE pic of her cute ass? Awwwhhh. 🙁

  42. beth says:

the design is kind of weird but the woman is born to wear red. red is my absolute favourite colour in all the world. i hate her.

  43. Amanda G says:

    That is a hideous dress.

  44. serena says:

    FUG.

  45. Ari says:

I absolutely love this dress and her hair and skin and eyes and shoes – she looks fantastic.

  46. Camille says:

Oh Jesus Kaiser, this dress is far, far, far worse than any ‘glittery sack’ that AJ has ever worn! It is bloody god awful! And it is a damn shame that she is wearing this hideousness because her face and hair look stunning. She is such a beautiful girl, but this dress does NOTHING for her. At all. 🙁

  47. DGO says:

Aboslutely hideous. She looks like a cheap dollar store Valentine.

  48. Pia says:

I’m not particularly convinced that Marchesa is ever attractive. It’s always incredibly over the top. I am not a fan.

  49. j. katz says:

This dress would be ok if it stopped where the red lace stops, and she didn’t have to carry several yards of netting around like she’s going fishing afterward. It needs scissors. If horrible shoes indicate they are made for each other, then they are made for each other. Him with the clown shoes, her with the ugly 1970’s stiletto’s.

  50. Cait says:

Fair skinned ladies (I am one!) can never, ever pull off red IMHO. That and the dress looks hideously cheap, but you know she paid a fortune for it which makes it even more sad.

  51. Talita says:

OMG It looks like her period is all over her

  52. lrm says:

    just awful.
she is still stunningly gorgeous, but that thing is a mess….she looks like the madam of a bordello.
maybe one that just closed a decade ago in rural idaho or something???

  53. Newbie says:

She pulls it off well (as she can look good in anything), but it’s really too busy. If it were a mermaid gown of the same fabric/lace, and we lost the sheer stuff around the train, it would have looked awesome imo. The color really suits her, and I love the hair, makeup and shoes. The SHOES!

  54. Newbie says:

He is SOoOOooOOOo not attractive to me. WTH?

  55. wifeyskarsgard says:

I like her hair and makeup. But what was she thinking wearing her curtains for a dress?!

  56. There is clearly a bundle to realize about this. I assume you made certain nice points in features also. Could you update me with your next post please?

  57. Co says:

Woody Allen is so DISGUSTING!!!! He’s attracted to children and supports child rapists.
