People Mag: Kate Middleton is a “natural” at being a princess

fp_7455038_barm_royal_11_11

ALL WAITY, ALL THE TIME. Good God, the American and British press are just so ecstatic that they have a new “princess” to talk about. It makes me wonder about the 14-year vacuum that was left in the wake of Princess Diana’s death. Diana was a superstar – a royal by marriage, and one of the biggest celebrities in the world by right, by suffering, by catastrophic marriage and by sheer star quality. When she died, the press looked to fill the gaping hole with actresses and heiresses and famewhores, but now they finally have a “commoner” who married into the royal family, so they’re going completely overboard. It’s not Kate Middleton’s fault, per se, although I do have a minor criticism of both Kate and the way she’s being handled in the media. My criticism: wait until she does something substantive before giving her a People Magazine cover and declaring that she’s a “natural” at her role. Thus far, she’s only gone to some parties and events, and while she’s performed those duties with grace and style (except for looking kind of bored at times), I’m still waiting for her to sign on for some charity work.

What learning curve?

She’s been a royal for just six weeks, but the newly minted Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has quickly proven “she’s a natural,” a palace insider tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story.

Gliding her way through an intense regimen of public engagements since her wedding to Prince William, adds the insider, Kate, 29, is “completely taking it in her stride.”

Still, Kate’s recent high-profile appearances might have proved overwhelming were it not for a few key counselors: her stepmother-in-law Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who has offered guidance on life as a royal wife; Helen Asprey, a longtime member of William and Prince Harry’s personal staff who now accompanies Kate to most engagements; and Prince William, 28, who makes sure to keep careful watch over his new wife.

“It’s very much the ‘home team’ advising,” says a palace source.

[From People]

First: OF COURSE she’s taking it all in stride. That’s what nine years of waiting gets you! Chica was prepared! Second: I do like that William seems protective of her, and I feel like he really is aware of how overwhelmed she could potentially be. He’s trying so hard to make sure she’s not thrown to wolves like his mother was. I like that a lot.

Meanwhile, St. James Palace has released more information about William and Kate’s Canadian and Californian itinerary. It does seem like they added a day to the California part… maybe because Waity wanted to meet Brangelina?!!?

California dreamin’ with Will and Kate! The itinerary for Prince William and Kate’s July 8 – 10 visit to California were detailed in a Wednesday morning briefing at St. James Palace — and the Duke and Duchess’ West Coast schedule is jam-packed!

After touching down from Canada on July 8, William, 28, and Kate, 29, will meet with up and coming entrepreneurs at a UKTI reception at the Beverly Hilton. Next up? A meet-and-greet with senior politicians and other high-profile figures at the Consular General’s resident in Los Angeles.

After getting some shut-eye at an undisclosed location, the just-married duo will head to Santa Barbara on July 9 for a polo match, where the Prince will play and Kate will give out prizes. (The game will benefit American Friends of the Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry.)

That night, the real fun begins: The royals will walk the red carpet with British TV, movie and theater stars for a BAFTA reception at the Belasco Theatre. (Celeb attendees for the bash have not yet been announced.)

As President of BAFTA, William will make a brief speech for the star-packed gala.

For day three (July 10), the pair will visit Inner City Arts, an L.A. program which helps disadvantaged and homeless children through art. That night, they’ll attend a war veterans event at Sony Studios; caeled “Nation: Mission Serve,” the event serves to strengthen ties between UK and US armed forces.

Will royal watchers in L.A. ever spot William and Kate without one another?

“[The tour] will be a double act, but there’l be occasions when the couple will separate, such as walkabouts,” press secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton says.

But the Duchess won’t be doing any speeches this time, Lowther-Pinkerton adds. “There’ll be a time and a place for that.”

A source tells Us that Kate is all set to look gorgeous in Hollywood — thanks to a special weapon. “The Duchess of Cambridge plans to bring hairdresser James Pryce with her on the North American tour,” the insider says. “The couple will also be bringing an administrative assistant.”

In all, the couple will roll with an entourage of seven.

[From Us Weekly]

So she’s bringing her hair guy. I’m guessing that she’ll end up bringing a stylist person too, seeing as how she’s trying to hire someone last minute as we speak. So much for not hiring staff, right? I don’t blame them for hiring staffers – if they continue to do all of these public engagements, they are going to need more and more staffers. What pissed me off was the claim – made by William’s spokesperson a few months ago – that they weren’t going to hire anybody because they were trying to be so “different” and “under the radar”. It was like William was looking down his nose at his father and all of the working royals who do hundreds of events and a full slate of charity work every year.

  1. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Diana was so amazing because she really went out into the world and helped people with AIDS and people who lived in poverty. Diana did things royals typically don’t do, she did more then give money she went and connected with people. Diana grabbed attention for more than marrying royal.

I am sure Kate will find her nitch in the philanthropy world and will find some way to make a name for herself other than having married William being the only thing interesting about her. I like her so far.

  2. Anonymous says:

So much attention for so little reason. She’s Vanna White with a title.

  3. uknowuloveme says:

    they will have gorgeous kids

  4. JulieM says:

Good heavens, this is getting tedious. All she does is dress up and smile. I’m with you, Kaiser. I’ll “waity” to be impressed when she actually does something of importance, something for someone other than herself. Of course she’s loving it, this show has been 9 years in the making.

  5. brin says:

ITA with Love Angelina, no one can expect Kate to be another Diana. She will find her niche and be her own person. I like her and wish her well.

  6. mln76 says:

You know her sister is so awful that it actually makes me relieved to see Waity getting attention. At least she is pretty. At least she’s actually is actually going to be Queen.

  7. Happymom says:

I think she’s beautiful, obviously in love with her husband (and he with her) and seems low key, charming and happy to finally be in this position. I think she’ll find her philanthropy niche and do a great job. Will she throw herself into all of it like Diana? Probably not-because Diana was an unhappy woman from a dysfunctional family in a loveless marriage.

  8. fannomore says:

she’s cute, that’s all, could be worse, could be pippa

  9. tango says:

Katherine is not doing what any spouse doesn’t do who is married to a rich famous person. Smile and make conversation while at parties and galas. Wow, how tough when you’re expected to be charming for a few hours or so maybe once every week or two.

I was under the impression they weren’t going to hire live in (or work in) help around their house. In order to protect their privacy. Not that they wouldn’t ever have staff at all.

  10. Ell says:

I think she is a ‘natural’. I thought William was referring to their every day lives in Anglesey when he was talking about staff.

  11. Anaya says:

Isn’t her title Duchess not Princess? She’ll be a princess someday but I’m not sure she is officially a princess now. Maybe I have it wrong.

EDIT: My question is in reference to the People cover, “The Princess Diaries”. That’s why I asked.

  12. Crash2GO2 says:

I think the staffers comment was in regards to their domestic situation. When they are ‘working’ she is expected to look tip top, hence the hair person. I know I certainly can’t blow my own hair out. Not that I would ever want to…

  13. Nonplussed says:

Like Diana, she’ll do good works because that’s basically her job from now on, nothing else to do. Doesn’t matter, she’s there for life now and will make a good Queen consort.

  14. Reality says:

Again, Diana didn’t get seriously involved in charity work until she’d produced an heir and a spare. Give her time, I’m sure she’ll make a wonderful princess.

  15. Oh Please says:

Whenever I see photos of the Middleton sisters, I am reminded of Pink’s song “Stupid Girls.” Can we please start seeing these twats for what they are?

The only person I’d ever bow to is the man or woman who cures cancer or some other major disease.

  16. John Wayne Lives says:

She’s been practicing her “Princess Face” in the mirror for 9 years.
And I agree, she’s not our princess. The Royals are interesting, but meh. Let’s have another round of Tudors in the palace to really shake things up 🙂

And I think that last pick of the M sisters walking together is proof that some girls would look better with 6 more lbs on their frames to fill them out, and soften them up. Especially Pippa. She looks kinda hard. Cupcakes are not your enemy girls!

  17. Kitty_Cal says:

@Anaya – I think she becomes a princess if and when Charles becomes the king and thus the title of Prince of Wales goes to William. But she may get to skip the whole thing and be queen (or at least Royal Consort) if Charles passes on the offer and William hops up to the throne.

  18. P.J. says:

Her formal title is Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. As I understand it, their press spokesmen have said they wouldn’t mind if the media calls her Princess Catherine, but the media seems to prefer Duchess.

Seven assistants on their foreign trip is a lot less than Charles’s usual entourage.

  19. Anonymous says:

I have a question. Why is Prince Phillip a prince and not king when he is married to the queen? Is it because he was not born in England?

  20. Meg says:

Are they allowed to drink at these events??

  21. Let’s not overthink this. She’s a beautiful young woman in a love match with a Prince, irresistible media fodder. She’ll find her charitable causes in due time; what’s the rush? The monarchy has long thought to be an anachronism and William is such a different kind of royal his reign, if he gets one, is sure to be a breath of fresh air. Of COURSE the powers behind the throne want publicity on this cool couple. Leave the girl alone–which one of us would always hit the perfect note in the glare of media spotlights? (More on my thoughts on them here: http://middle-aged-diva.blogspot.com/2011/06/proof-she-got-motherhood-right.html)

  22. fancyamazon says:

@love angelina Not taking anything away from the work that Diana did, she was doing the same thing that the rest of the royals were doing..and still are. They are maybe the busiest family on the planet, and they give to charities and make hospital and hospice visits (even to people with contagious and fatal diseases). Diana was special because she was not as “royal”, because she was a party girl before she got married, and because she had that spark to connect with the common people that some of the royal family lack, being a bit more formal and stiff.

Lady Diana was a great woman, no doubt, but the rest of the royals deserve just as much respect.

  23. bluhare says:

They don’t have staff at their house in Wales. She cooks and does the light cleaning and has a housekeeper come in. The staff is for when they are in London. So, no, I don’t think they’re going against what they said.

  24. NoFrank says:

@ Anonymous — the way I understand it, you can be Queen by marriage but you can only be King by right of inheritance, so Philip is known as the Prince Consort. Victoria’s husband, Albert, was also known as Prince Consort.

  25. TG says:

I think that is correct, because King is higher than Queen and Elizabeth is the ruler and Phillip is just her spouse so he is Prince Phillip, but if Wills ever becomes King than Waity would be Queen. And she is a Princess, at least a Princess consort, but a Brit could explain it better I bet or someone more obsessed then me and I am pretty obsessed and I still don’t understand all the titling over there.

  26. Mimi says:

This is so last (few) century (centuries) ago.

She doesn’t even have a profession. She came from money and privilege and what did she do with all those opportunities?
chased a guy, because he’s got a title which means nothing nowadays.

“Performed her duties”? what are they? to attend parties?

“Overwhelmed”? by what? is she a first year associate at a NY law firm?
Is she a doctort doing her residence year at some hospital?

  27. r. h. boiseau says:

She’s a common, goldigging, socialclimbing WAG. If she were a girl from the US she’d be compared to any other goldigging pushy chic sleeping with a celeb, waiting for him to marry her. She’s overrated, her family was not wealthy that’s another press exaggeration to not make her and her sister look like goldiggers and title hunters. She’s just a plain girl nothing special and she is not a Princess. The Queen gave her a Duchess title just like Sarah Duchess of York had, the press needs to call her by her title Duchess. It’s only the People magazine rag, that can’t accept that she’s not a Princess. The Queen gave her a Duchess title and that’s all she is a Duchess just like Sarah was.
I won’t be buying this issue with that smug, aged face for 29 looking out from the pages. Yuck.

  28. Mag says:

Glorified housewife. I’m sorry but in these economic times why on earth wouldn’t they at least start with one charity at least. How can she still be choosing – how can you an individual not know what they stand for – she’s nearly 30 for god’s sake.

I suggest someone read Snobs by Julian fellows – Waity reminds me of Edith (Countess Broughton)

  29. JulieM says:

OK-here goes: Elizabeth is Queen Regnant because her father, King George VI (of the King’s Speech fame) did not have any sons, he had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. If he had had a son, the son would have been King, even if said son was younger than Elizabeth and Margaret. Oldest son inherits. Charles will inherit the throne. If there is no son, the daughter inherits the throne, in this case Elizabeth. There have been multiple Queens of England and the United Kingdom so there is ample historical precedence for this.

Don’t confuse Queen Regnant (the Sovereign) with Queen Consort. The Queen is Head of State, no one can have precedence over her. Thus her husband, Philip, is a Prince consort. A Queen Consort is the wife of the King. Camilla will be Queen Consort, Waity will be Queen Consort when their respective husbands inherit the throne.

    BTW Mimi: Right on!

  30. Sandy says:

They said they didn’t want staff at their home in Wales they did not say they would refuse hiring staff for any other purpose.

  31. snackysnaxx says:

Both those girls look about a thousand years old.

  32. gamblea says:

Shame on People mag, Gabrielle should be the cover story.

  33. Selena Castle says:

For heavens sake, Diana was far from a saint!

So Catherine waited for 9 years. She lived with him! How many other girls live with their guys for a few years before they get married? Do you make the same remarks about them?

  34. Alix says:

    I can’t believe she’s only 29.

  35. Just Saying says:

These ladies look about 40 years old.

  36. kibbles says:

She’s nice looking and all, but she does not nor will she ever have the star power Diana had. I agree with Kaiser, I immediately thought, “Duh, of course she is ready! She’s waited nearly a decade to become Princess.” And what exactly does she need to train for? As long as she maintains her weight and remains thin, chooses decent clothing, and doesn’t fall on her face, that is all she needs to do at the moment! Yes, of course she will take up philanthropy and do some charity work but I have a strange feeling it will be for pr purposes only. Waity has never seemed too concerned with social issues and during her 9 years of waiting she did maybe one or two charity events. It’s okay that she has chosen to live her adult life as a rich socialite in waiting to become a royal but let’s not pretend she cares very much about anything else outside of her WASP world.

  37. lin234 says:

To be fair she did “work”. She dated and married Wills and in turn got her parent’s company free publicity which made them rich and will continue making them richer the higher her titles goes. So if laying on your back counts as work. Waity did it for 9 long years.

  38. taxi says:

@mags. Read up. They do have charities – named some as requested recipients in lieu of wedding gifts.

Diana was no saint nor was Charles, but all of Diana’s teary tantrums & threats to throw her pregnant self down the palace stairs didn’t seem real princess-y. The girl lacked dignity, never even finished high school, & claimed to be “thick as a plank.” She was a neurotic mess who blabbed her woes to any sympathetic camera/mic & learned to work the press. With lots of help from stylists & designers, she got some glam going, but she was not any natural beauty – just look at all the pre-divorce pictures!

  39. D. Musseli says:

Kate is nothing but a Kardashian cleaned up in the UK Press. Pr.William was pushed into this by the press and Kate and her family playing head games on him for years. He’s going to be wondering WTF in a few more years. Kate and her mother are nothing but manipulative schemers.

  40. Jaxx says:

I don’t get all the resentment. Yes, she waited. TO MARRY THE MAN SHE LOVED. They met, they were too young to get married at that point so what else was she supposed to do? Tell Wills to come back in a decade? At least enough time passed so they both know they have something that has a good chance of going the distance.

I think she is pretty, very poised and has an innate elegance and dignity that will serve her well. She may look a little older than her age now but I bet she holds up well in the long run. She will still be pretty when she’s 60. I can’t wait to see their children.

I also wonder how Harry’s tie managed to match her dress perfectly.

  41. hmmm says:

    Feh!

Waity has been rehearsng for almost a decade. There’s nothing ‘natural’ about it!

I am going to have fun bashing the guts out of her ambition.

  42. hmmm says:

    @ JulieM,
In Waity’s case I think ‘King’s consort’ equals ‘trophy wife’.

  43. hmmm says:

    @Mag,

Thanks for the book recommendation. I am fascinated by class distinctions. Ever read Nancy Mitford’s book on U and Non-U?What a hoot!

IMO, Waity is a common garden variety fortune hunter. Having said that I don’t think Wills is much of a prize. Which makes her glaringly without standards when it comes to men and ‘love’. And as an aside her fashion sense sucks especially because she thinks she’s doing it right. She’s a fake and I fault her especially for making it so obviousl

  44. eternalcanadian says:

“I’m still waiting for her to sign on for some charity work.” So what are all those charities listed in lieu of wedding gifts, chopped liver? She’s already involved with Prince William and Harry’s foundation.

Give Catherine a couple years before you all gang up on her like a pack of rabid rabbits. 😛

I think all of you, Kaiser included, are just jealous you don’t get to have that kind of lifestyle. 😉

  45. Chessie says:

At least she looks good in a hat. 🙂
