Michelle Obama films an ‘iCarly’ guest spot for military families

It’s no secret that military life is tough, and sometimes it feels even harder on the families of deployed and mobilized soldiers than on the enlisted members themselves. Even though we live in a highly technological age, a lot of these services aren’t available for the military; for example, one of my friends just shipped out in Japan on the USS George Washington (CVN-73), and he told me that even Facebook is blocked on board the vessel. This is not to mention the fact that video casting services like Skype also present many difficulties as well. Of course, the Navy has banned these services for security purposes, but it creates a highly frustrating process for soldiers to make any sort of contact with those they leave behind as they serve our country.

As such, the Nickelodeon show “iCarly” (which focuses upon a teenage girl and her friends, who star in their own web-cast series) has filmed an episode about families trying to reach out their loved ones as they serve abroad, and First Lady Michelle Obama makes a guest appearance:

Michelle Obama has gone from the White House to Nickelodeon. The First Lady will appear as very special guest star on the hit Nick show, “iCarly.”

According to E! Online, Obama dropped by the set Monday to film her guest spot, which she hopes will shed light on Joining Forces, a program dedicated to helping and honoring U.S. military families.

The episode revolves around Carly (played by Miranda Cosgrove) who breaks some rules in an attempt to set up a video chat with her dad, who is serving overseas. The First Lady, playing herself, hears about Carly’s attempts and drops by to talk about how important it is for families and soldiers overseas to connect.

In slightly related news, Mrs. Obama has also made a handful of recent apperances on the Disney Channel for a PSA series called “Magic of Healthy Living.” Here’s one of the episodes in which she interacts with some of the Disney’s teen stars to teach them about healthy food portion sizes. It’s great that Michelle Obama is taking so much time out of her schedule to target tween-related issues, and it’s especially beneficial that she’s placing great emphasis (with the “iCarly” appearance) upon military familes because so many of us are still in the process of missing our own soldiers. The “iCarly” episode won’t air until next January, but here’s a behind the scenes clip:

Good for her for helping our military families!

  2. Trillion says:

iCarly is a guilty pleasure of mine. (I pretend that my kid is the one who wants to watch it) I just enjoy getting lost in their grown-up free world of improbably continual access to technology and creativity. Plus Spencer is kinda cute.

  3. Bodhi says:

I LOVE Mrs. Obama! I think that she is a wonderful role model. No matter what my opinion of her husband is (it varys from day to day) I always think that she is wonderful.

  4. JJ says:

    she’s really likeable.

  5. 4Real says:

    Can’t stand her…that is all.

  6. Sally G says:

She is wonderful! She and President Obama really do care about people, and it’s nice to see that for a change.

  7. Trillion says:

“Can’t stand her?” Wow. That’s some strong emotion. Strange. She seems innocuous enough. Supports children’s causes, always looks very well put together, speaks with a warm intelligence, and seems down to Earth.

  8. Miss Marie says:

Only recently has Mrs Obama and Mrs Biden finally stepped up to the plate in relation to supporting our military families and their plights. Coincidetally, an election is coming up…

  9. Quest says:

I do like to watch iCarly and I like that Mrs. Obama is doing positive things …it is wonderful, bad timing but wonderful

  10. Trillion says:

Nope, Miss Marie. You’re wrong. I Just did a simple search (you should try this sometime before declaring something as fact) to see if there is any veracity to that claim and find plenty of evidence of the First Lady’s public support of military families since 2009.

  11. girl says:

Very cool. We are a military family also and if this airs in January, it will be perfect timing for us, IYKWIM.

I am very pleased to see the First Lady’s work for military families. There isn’t a whole lot people can do to make deployments better but the simple fact that she does so much to try means a whole lot. And I say this as a person who does not agree with her husband’s policies by and large.

My personal opinion as a military spouse is that it is harder on the service member and the children. From moment to moment, more or less, I can check on my children and know they are okay. Maybe because my husband is such a hands on father but I cannot imagine what it is like to be gone for a year at a time and only have 2 weeks tops to just reach out and hug you little ones or kiss boo-boos better or tuck them in at night.

  12. girl says:

I agree, Mrs Obama has been using her position to help military families (and address children’s health and diet) for a while. It isn’t front and center all the time but has definitely been there pretty much since her husband first took office.

  13. the original bellaluna says:

God love her. When my dad was active duty and stationed overseas or “on ship” we actually had to drive to the MARS Station on base to communicate with him.

(This was before computers and social media, but the security-based challenges nowadays tend to level the playing field. Except now you can actually receive a phone call at home from your loved one.)

  14. gee says:

I appreciate her doing this, but I dislike herrrrrrrrrrrrr

  15. spinner says:

Don’t like her or the horse she rode in on.

  16. Samigirl says:

Hahaha@Trillion. I do the SAME thing. I think it’s a super cute show, and I watch it with my little guy. He likes it ok enough, and sings the song along with me. He’s picked up some weird language, such as calling stuff “janky,” but I suppose it could be worse. Also, Jared Leto did a guest spot as a security guard on an episode, I noticed recently. I couldn’t believe my eyes, so I IMDB’ed it, and it was totally him. Anywho, Go Michelle! I think she is the epitome of a classy, graceful, kind, intellegent, STRONG woman 🙂

  17. Whatever says:

I love Michelle Obama and iCarly! We’ve seen her on Disney before with the nutrition message and she was great. There’s no reason at all not to like her. Well there is one…and its just ugly.

  18. Miss Marie says:

Trillion, uh, did you take your mean pill today? hee hee

  19. Praise St. Angie! says:

curious to those who say they don’t like her…why?

even if you don’t like her husband or his politics, what has this woman done or said to make you dislike her?

you may certainly have a valid reason, I’d just like to know what it is as she’s not a very controversial person.

  20. notpretentious says:

    I think she’s great!

  21. GradStudentEatingHotPockets says:

I don’t understand why people dislike the first lady- she does a lot of charity work and it’s things she has been involved with for a while (compared to people who just jump on the bandwagon for the new hot charity at the moment and then drop it later). That’s admirable.

It’s one thing to agree or disagree with the president’s views, politics, policies…he’s the president. But just because she’s married to him doesn’t necessarily mean she is just like him. I’m more of a conservative leaning person but I think FLOTUS is awesome.

(FYI I generally love all the first ladies…they’re just so interesting! I do not like Hilary Clinton’s mullet though.)

  22. Dingles says:

Michelle Obama is an amazing woman. As a military spouse myself I really appreciate all the work she’s doing to raise awareness of military families.

  23. Emily says:

@GradStudentEatingHotPockets, ITA. I’m not much of a fan of Barack Obama these days, but I love Michelle. I like what she’s doing, and I like what she wears while she’s doing it!

  24. liv says:

@samigirl, which icarly episode did jared leto guest star in? i’ve seen practically all of them, cause my sister and little cousin love that show. i imdbed it and couldn’t find it.

  25. Steffie says:

    Nice effort i guess
