Will Michelle Williams’s new boyfriend bring her closure, Swedish-style?

I think I saw something about this last week, and I was going to write about it and then I… forgot? Michelle Williams aims to be rather boring and uncontroversial, so it’s not like we have to talk about it every time she has a date. Especially when she generally dates nice-ish guys with little to no drama. Take her on-again/off-again relationship with Spike Jonze – it could have very easily been a “controversy” but it just wasn’t. They were together. They got pap’d sometimes. His ex-wife never said anything and everybody wished them well. I figured it would be the same for Michelle and her new boyfriend too. His name is Cary Fukunaga, and he’s a director. He was responsible for putting my lover Michael Fassbender in the role of Mr. Rochester, so Cary is ALL GOOD in my book. He’s Swedish and Japanese, and he’s really tall. And he’s pretty hot too.

So, why am I writing about them now? Well, the Enquirer has a weird little story about why Michelle is hoping this relationship works out. Something about Sweden.

Three years after his overdose death, Heath Ledger’s former girlfriend Michelle Williams has found new love with a guy who she believes can help her finally move past the tragesy. Michelle has been spotted out with Swedish-Japanese director Cary Fukunaga, 33. And sources tell the Enquirer that the two have forged an unbreakable bond because of his Swedish roots.

So how does it involve Heath? Michelle was in Sweden filming Mammoth when she got the shocking news of his accidental drug overdose in January 2008.

“Heath’s death changed Michelle’s life forever and she will never forget where she was at that moment when she got the news,” revealed a close source. Michelle is convinced that Cary, the director of Jane Eyre, is a lucky omen for her, divulged the insider.

“She is a very spiritual person and believes that dating a Swedish guy brings her full circle and gives her closure. Michelle has high hopes that Cary could be the one to help her move past Heath. She fears losing another guy to drugs. She’s so happy that Cary loves life and doesn’t need drugs or other substances.

Perhaps the biggest factor in the relationship is Matilda Rose, her 5-year-old daughter, who Michelle hopes will bond with Cary. Added the insider: “What Michelle wants more than anything is a happy like for Matilda.”

[From The Enquirer, print edition]

It feels like the Enquirer was just stretching for some kind of connection between these two. Enquirer Writer #1: “He’s Swedish. Was Michelle ever in Sweden?” Enquirer Writer #2: “YES! Go with that.” I think Michelle is part or half Swedish too, incidentally. I’m surprised they didn’t mention that.

  3. brin says:

She seems cautious in her personal life and who can blame her. She seems very protective of Matilda and is careful in her relationships. I hope she finds someone really special and if this guy is it, that’s great.

…(Michelle was in Sweden filming Mammoth when she got the shocking news of his accidental drug overdose in January 2008)…(She is a very spiritual person and believes that dating a Swedish guy brings her full circle and gives her closure)…

This piece of The Enquirer is probably the worst pile of crap ever written in History of magazines…
But maybe it’s not their fault, Michelle Williams is so fraking boring that journalist must not know what the hell to write about her to make her look remotely interesting.

  14. Vee says:

He is incredible to look at, my lord, YUMMY!

I wish Michelle well. Other than her sometimes odd fashion choices, she seems very sweet and very talented.

  15. the original bellaluna says:

JMO, but I think Michelle never stopped loving Heath. She just couldn’t take the drug use anymore and didn’t want it around her daughter. Because he died, she never got the opportunity to see if things between them would have worked out. There was no resolution. That would have devastated me, too.

I like that she is cautious about who is around her daughter; little girls really look up to the “daddy figure” in their lives, and losing her daddy at such a young age has probably compounded that for Matilda.

  16. Jen34 says:

Dumb story, but he is adorable.

  17. Ari says:

I love mixies (being one myself) CANT GO WRONG haha (jk) anyway I think he resembles Heath in an odd way, am I the only one who sees it? :L

I am intrigued to see how this goes.

  21. Anonymous says:

    put a bird on it

  22. Mimi says:

I’m so happy for her. I def agree with “the real bellaluna”, though. I don’t think she ever stopped loving Heath and was probably just waiting for him to get his shit together so that they cold work things out. But if this guy makes her happy than I’m all for it. She deserves to be happy.

  23. munchies says:

ill pick this bird guy than the gooseling

  24. REALIST says:

I have to say this-I don’t like Michelle Williams. I know “The Story” is that she left Heath because of his drug problems and for Matilda, but I think there is more to the story. There’s “tough love”, and there’s checking out emotionally. He was obviously in emotional pain, and the role he was in as Joker probably pushed him over.
Where was Michelle? Where was everyone (except Mary Kate or Ashley or whoever..)? Michelle should have at least been checking in-he was the father of their child, and they were in love not so long before that.
I do not have a drug problem, but I am bipolar 2; now we’re (MD’s and me) wondering if it’s bipolar one. I can’t tell you painful it is sometimes to be alone with this illness. Few people understand it, and the stigma-well, you’ve heard this before. I need unconditional love and someone to just be there, and that’s just not the case.
I think Heath was very troubled and very few people were there for him when he really needed help. That’s just the time you don’t care enough about yourself to live or die, and that, I think, is his story.

  25. Kara Ann says:

    OOPS! double posted

  26. Kara Ann says:

Not much to say about Michelle Williams except that I wish her and her child all the best.

    To Realist,

I have several family members who are bi-polar and I sympathize with the difficulties that it causes you (and, no doubt, the people that love you). Medications have made a huge difference for my loved ones and, thus, for me too. I think the diagnosis has become more common and people are less stigmatized because of it. I have nothing earth-shattering to say, I just wanted to let you know that…well, you are not alone. Many of us fight this exhausting battle with you everyday. Good luck and good life.

  27. Mingy says:

    good for her….hes a hottie.

michelle has the cutest smile ever!

  28. ctkat1 says:

Those are funky photos- the dude is really, really hot.

Mia Wasikowska is a lucky lady- spending a few months working with the Fassbender and Fukunaga isn’t such a bad job!

  29. REALIST says:

    Kara Ann:
Thanks for weighing in. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 44 (three years ago), and you know how being artistic and bipolar often go hand in hand, so I always wondered about Heath. Then again, I tend to identify with tragic people (Elliott Smith).
I was a pharmacist for 20 years, so I’m on top of the meds. They help, but I really can’t emphasize how important it is to have people close by who love you no matter what, even if you are twitching because of your Lamictal or manic because you forgot to take a couple doses of Klonapin.
Anyway, this is not about me except to say that I understand the kind of pain my tragic idols must have felt, even though I have not had issues with drugs or alcohol (although many people with BPD do-it eases the pain, for awhile). You likely know that the suicide rate of BPD’s is 15% the general population. Then, as I said before, there are the people who just don’t care either way.
I have some goals set so I keep going. I encourage anyone who wonders what the heck is wrong with them-I was depressed, but something else was going on-seek help. If you have emotional pain that just doesn’t seem to go away-seek help. Meds are a good start, but it is a process, and you need people around you-we all do-who will be there no matter what.

  30. Kim says:

Such a beautiful, classy girl. Her actions after Heaths death and that she didnt run and do interviews or sell her soul for tabloid covers proves her class. The fact that she kept a very private matter private, escpecially in lieu of their daughter tragically losing her father at such a young age made me a fan for life.

Her and her beautiful daughter deserve abundant happiness & i wish them the best in life.

  31. bappi says:

Michelle is part Norwegian not Swedish

  32. janna says:

hmmm. he looks like adam sandler if sandler were younger, fitter and better looking. oh, and dressed half-way decently.

  33. BellaLuna says:

I cant believe everyone is saying hes hot…NOT. Not even a little.

  34. MovieExtra says:

Michelle never lost Heath to drugs. He wasn’t even on drugs, the contrary. HEATH LEFT MICHELLE. She had made him go ON drugs because he was so miserable with her, but as soon as he got his life back, he stopped, even stopped drinking too. The fact is Michelle lost Heath when he realised what a NASTY manipulator she was (AND STILL IS)and he actually left her ages before making it public, ( many months before), which explains why she walked around looking so angry and miserable months before the breakup was made official, and it was made so because Heath had had enough of the pretence. He was inlove with Gemma Ward and they were just about to go public before he died, and Heath’s truest and oldest fans will never forgive Michelle for playing the ‘widow’ card after he died of ACCIDENTAL PRESCRIPTION DRUG OVERDOSE. The cow lapped up all the attention, when she knew all along that Heath and her weren’t even on speaking terms before he died, and a lot of that had to do with her trying to hurt Heath because he dared to have a new girlfriend, so she went and used Matilda, the baby she tried to trap with him in the first place, against him by denying Heath access to her. This was clearly done out of SPITE, and contributed to Heath’s sleepless nights and anxiety, hence the prescription drugs (he also had a severe back pain, insomia, near pneumonia, and severe jet lag). To Michelle’s shame, she played the ‘poor little widow’ card, when she was far from, and for that she proved what a self-interested horrible person she is. Oh and BTW, it was Heath who had always looked after Matilda, well Heath and the nanny, and the one who had looked least after had been Michelle, so what she did to Heath, denying him access to Matilda for up to 2 months before his death is DESPICABLE. She can go to HELL for all I care and I hope one day Matilda will find out the truth. Of course, by then ‘mummy dearest’ would have totally brainwashed her.

As for Michelle and this new guy….. SHE WISHED!

  36. Red says:

There’s no baby bump… she just put on a bit of weight and doesn’t have a particularly thin mid section.

  37. gia says:
