As you may remember, I actually liked Lady Gaga’s single “Edge of Glory”. It reminded me of the truly wonderful hit songs from the soundtracks to ‘80s classics. “Edge of Glory could very easily fit into the last few minutes of The Karate Kid. I could see it being embraced by John Hughes for a critical moment at a 16th birthday party. The song is dated – in a good way. Well, now Lady Gaga has made a video for “Edge of Glory” and it seems like she’s embracing the ‘80s completely. She made sure that the video looks like it came out of 1985 too.
You know what bothers me? Lady Gaga always talks about NYC, how she’s a New York girl and New York is what she’s all about and then… she films a video on an LA soundstage made to look like NYC. Just a small thing, I realize, but why not just shoot a video in New York?
But seriously, this video is both horrible and great. It’s horrible just in the sheer “I give up”-ness of Lady Gaga. It’s like Courtney Love foretold – Gaga is now a sad drag queen with no more ideas. It’s great because once you strip away all of the extra crap, Gaga still has a powerful voice, and she’s still capable of making hit music. STRIP AWAY THE DRAG QUEEN!!
Sidenote: does anyone else think that Gaga filmed this on the same “balcony” set as the end of Pretty Woman? Strikingly similar.

Video is boring! And drag queen. She doesn’t need the gimics, she’s good on her own.
I think the most interesting part of this new video is not the video itself, but the drama behind the scenes. Her “monsters” were going crazy last night in some kind of tweet war with her (former?) creative director Laurieann Gibson over negative comments Laurieann made about the video.
From what I gather of the situation, the video was originally supposed to be directed by Jopesh Kahn and choreographed by Gibson. But, there was some kind of disagreement on set and Gaga fired everyone and just used whatever footage she had left to make the video. The rumor is that the video originally involved mermaids.
I don’t know. Maybe this is a sign that Gaga is coming to her senses a little bit. I mean, mermaids? Really? The video she made is pretty bland. But, it’s probably better than drag queen mermaids would have been.
Anyway, Laurieann made some comments about how she thought the video was disappointing and got viscously attacked by Gaga fans. Then Laurieanna lost her temper and started cursing at the “ignorant monsters” out there and made one particularly bitchy comment saying pretty much that if all those monsters enjoyed the dancing in Gaga’s previous videos then they were “enjoying [Laurieann]’s hard work”.
Someone else had a text message supposedly from Gaga where she said she “freestyled” the whole video. If you ask me, it shows. I can do better than that on six beers and no sleep! But, Laurieann seemed pretty bitter about the insinuation and made it sound like she thinks Gaga is full of lies. This all sounds like good gossip to me, and if anyone knows more on the topic, I’d like to hear it!
As for the video, it’s boring. And, yeah, I also hate that she says she reps New York so hard and then shoots her “I love New York” video on an LA sound stage. She only pushes the New York thing because it adds to her mystique IMO, AKA it makes her more like Madonna. Whatever.
Oh, and speaking of Madonna, Madge should go check her closet because I’m pretty sure Gaga’s wearing one of her old ones here!

I like the fact that it has no dance routine for a change i was getting so bored of the stupid dances in EVERY video but gaga should stop and get some rest and write some great songs. There’s not even a song as good as paparazzi on this album let alone poker face or bad romance.

My harsh comments are reserved for LaurieAnne, ugh, that woman, she’s awful. Her bitchiness and pride overshadow her talent, which is overrated at that. Me no want.

I’m not a Lady Gaga fan, but I can usually tolerate having to listen to her songs if I’m stuck in a car with someone who likes her or if I’m out somewhere. They’re easy for me to block out and just enjoy the beats. I even actually like “Judas,” but damn, I can’t get over how BORING “Edge of Glory” is. I just can’t stand it. It’s so generic.
I guess she could not afford dancers hen?
If she had saved some of her money the vid might have looked better 🙂
Some of the reactions to Gaga are so irritating. If she made a video that was crazy and weird, people would bitch about that. If she makes a “normal” low-key video (like this one), people bitch about that too. She just can’t win LOL Is it the best video I’ve ever seen? Nope, but she looks great in it and it’s a good song. I find it refreshing that she did something without theatrics for once! I know there’s a lot of hate for her, but she has some GREAT songs (You and I, Poker Face, Speechless) and that girl can sing!
Meh. I don’t love it like I love the Bad Romance video. Her lip syncing is really strange/off in this video.

Edge of Glory really is one of the few decent songs on the new album–which is, itself, a huge disappointment, a major set-back in every way. That said: doesn\t everyone agree that Gaga’s performance of Edge of Glory at the Billboard Awards was spectacular?
Half the time, I can ALMOST ignore her desperate streetwalker outfits, if she could just ditch the gross eye makeup, disgusting wigs, & most of all; the ABSOLUTELY repulsive nails, which firmly nail the lid shut on the coffin, for me (the last part applies to Rihanna too)
This woman doesn’t know how to market herself to a much wider crowd. When she 1st came out she was doing that, but now she’s only appealing to the eccentric, gay & freaky crowd.
Oh & did I mention she needs to keep her mouth shut, both literally & figuratively. Bitch makes even dumber comments than Megan Fox in her prime.

At first I thought it was boring too, but as I kept watching, I started really loving how over the top 80s it was. It’s so extreme it amuses me.

It’s a pity that they didn’t postpone the video. I love Gaga and I like the song – but frankly the video needs a bit more sacrilege and it’s missing the standard half-nekkid dancing men.
It’s a shame that the full video wasn’t shot because it sounds like it would be fun for an 80s child like me. I’m pretty sure that the fire escape and pink room is referencing St. Elmo’s Fire (the scene where Demi Moore’s character has a breakdown); the mermaids would be referencing Splash etc.
As for filming on a sound stage – I can’t blame them for that. Shutting down an street in New York might have taken more time to arrange than they had and as Rhonyc said about the fire escapes, there’d probably would be health and safety issues for all those half-nekkid dancing men hanging off them.
