NYT critic slams Lady Gaga & Dontella Versace for their “embalmed” collaboration

This is kind of a convoluted story, but it has some good parts. Where to start? Okay, remember how Lady Gaga flashed her boobs when she won the CFDA’s “Style Icon” Award a few weeks ago? We didn’t use any of the Gaga Tit photos, but they were all over the place, and you get the idea. Well, the New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn took Gaga to task for Gaga’s usage of vintage Versace. Apparently, Donatella Versace opened up the Versace archives, so that Gaga could wear vintage Versace to the CFDA gala AND in the music video for “Edge of Glory”. I didn’t know that the costumes in that video were vintage Versace, but it makes sense, given how friggin’ dated and “Totally ’80s” that whole video seemed. Here’s part of what NYT critic Cathy Horyn wrote:

In a week, I told myself, Lady Gaga’s vintage Versace studs (seen in her new “Edge of Glory” video) will be history. If that. “Never be afraid to dream,” she tweeted to her followers, but I had already unfollowed, like a skiff breaking from its moorings. Goodbye!

….As funny and as fresh as Gaga was in her speech at the recent C.F.D.A. awards, she looked embalmed in the black Versace harness (apparently from Gianni Versace’s final collection), and I don’t know why Donatella Versace said she was honored by Gaga’s selection, unless, of course, she thought she had to say something nice about the superstar. But a D.O.A. video doesn’t help the House of Versace. Be choosier, Ms. Versace.

[From The NYT]

Oooooh, snap (was that too dated as well?). I agree with Horyn’s point about Gaga looking “embalmed” and I completely cosign her criticism of Donatella Versace opening the Versace archives. I mean, it’s not like Gaga is Madonna! Remember when Madonna and (Gianni) Versace went together like drag queens and lipstick? I remember. For a large chunk of time, Madge only wore Gaultier and Versace, it seemed. Those were good years, and Madonna sincerely changed the fashion industry. You’d think that Gaga would be more conscious of it, then. She probably figures that her monsters won’t even remember Madonna’s contributions to fashion.

Here’s the vintage Versace in “Edge of Glory”:

I love Madonna. I really do, but eff that NYT chick. Lady Gaga looked freaking fabulous at the awards not embalmed. That is such BS. What is Madonna the only one who can love Vintage Versace? No. Lady Gaga looked amazing in Edge of Glory. I think its quite cool Gaga honors the time that inspires her.

@ LOVE ANGELINA. totally agree with you
(plus I love your avatar :D)

Lady gaga can saturate, but she has extremely good work ethics. Cut to Lainey:

…So she unfollowed her…because she didn’t like how she wore a dress?

Goodness, I hate when adults behave like whining babies. So you don’t like how she dresses (I don’t the majority of the time) COMMENT on it and move on. Don’t make a point to say you unfollowed her (ouch, ooh, burn) and that Donnatella must CLEARLY have felt forced to compliment Gaga.

So what if Madge was once into Versache, it’s no longer 1985, seems she has moved on…why don’t we all move on and accept clothes are for WEARING.

There’s plenty of genuine things to criticize Gaga on, things like this just remind me how much she blessedly doesn’t give a f>ck yet the critics clearly do.

Ew, Love Angelina. The crazy who got pushed out of Dlisted for…get this…HER CRAZY.

  5. mia girl says:

I think she looked ok in that dress, but am SOOOO tired of those shoes she wears.

@Luci, thanks for providing that link. It really is just SO REFRESHING to hear about/see a star who really is appreciative of their loyal fans….REALLY! Just like that link pointed out, Selena Gomez apparently was a diva, & here’s Gaga..biggest name in the world right now…out and about in the streets, elevators…everywhere in the REAL WORLD (not pent up in a dressing room or a fancy penthouse room for their “privacy”). And what is Lady Gaga doing? She’s EMBRACING, ENJOYING, INTERACTING w/everyday people and her fans. OH SO REFRESHING. She may come off as weird to some people, but it sounds to me as if she’s a REAL PERSON & hasn’t bought into the “I’m special and better than” crap….oh so cool!!!

  7. Tiffany says:

Really over the goat shoes. She looks like she should live in Narnia.

  8. natalie says:

gaga is just kind of gross in general. more so in versace.

  9. gonzo says:

yeah, lets just leave all the classic Versace in the archives until someone comes along that this NYT bitch approves of….
Come on, it’s been so awesome to see all the vintage Gianni stuff, because, lets face it, Versace hasnt been the house it was since his death. and it’s been fun to see all these know-nothing fashion people talk shit about her clothes until it gets pointed out where they came from. and for those of you who can’t face the truth, Gaga IS this generation’s new Madonna.

  10. original kate says:

all these outfits remind me of “absolutely fabulous”, when edina would turn up wearing some hideous ensemble and patsy would make a face:

patsy: eddie, what ARE you wearing?
    edina: it’s lacroix.
    patsy: …it’s fabulous.

    *sigh* i miss abfab.

  11. anti says:

i actually liked it… looked fun!

  12. luls says:

GAGA CAN TRY AND TRY ALL SHE WANTS…… BUT THE MAIN AND BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MADONNA & GAGA, IS THAT MADONNA LOOKED FABULOUS IN HER FASHION STATEMENTS, WHEREAS CACA’S NAME DESCRIBES HER PERFECTLY.

  13. MB says:

    Excuse me?
Umm, im no Gaga fangirl but isnt it up to those who knew Gianni best to determine who is “worthy” enough to wear his designs?
What the hell makes Madonna so great? She is a shrivelled up shadow of her former greatness and wouldnt dare dress up in 80’s / 90’s garb lest everyone remember how good she USED to be way back then.

Gianni Versace was a creative and visionary designer who built a legacy. How long was Donatella supposed to wait to open the archives so that Gianni’s work could live and breathe again?

  14. Nev says:

Madonna will be back to KICK SOME POPSTAR ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Lindy says:

What crawled up that NYT critic’s butt and died? Seriously, I don’t listen to Gaga’s music all that much, but I really do think she’s creative, talented, works like a fiend, is the opposite of a diva… She rocked that vintage Versace if you ask me (not that I know fashion). Everyone keeps claiming that she’s copying Madonna, that she’s so unoriginal, etc. But that’s how art works–every artist, even the most creative and visionary, is part of a bigger tradition with history and homage to those who have gone before.

  16. Wendy says:

Gaga looks awesome in all the vintage!
    Love it and her!

  17. Dave says:

Lady Gaga is being used by the Illuminatti… Can’t you people see that ?

  18. galaxy.girl says:

Song sounds too Disney Movie ending for me 🙁 ugh

  19. itzbilebitch says:

    hey dave STFU.

  20. Andi K says:

I have to say that I have never seen Lady Gaga make a face other than the “fierce” one, so that photo where she is giving a speech and looking upward? I thought it was an impersonator.

  21. Cindy says:

uh, who cares what she’s wearing? GaGa doesn’t look embalmed, but she is wearing more white makeup at this moment. I’m not sure why. I like her for the most part. And, it’s refreshing to see her wear clothes in public for a change. If Versace were alive, I’m pretty sure GaGa and he would be friends. I didn’t like that video, but love the boots. Cool…GaGa rethink the eye liner art on your eyes. Oh poo, continue have fun GaGa
