Lady Gaga does anime-eyes in Japan, for charity: busted or awesome?

Here are some photos of Lady Gaga in Japan over the weekend, where she performed at the MTV Video Music Aid Japan concert, which raised money for the Japanese Red Cross. Gaga has done a lot to raise money for Japanese relief and rebuilding funds in the wake of the March tsunami, which left so much of Japan devastated. Before we talk about how Gaga is a good person for focusing so much energy on Japanese relief funds, can we talk about her “eyes”? When I first saw the photos, I thought she had actually attached something ON TOP of her eyes to make them look like those big-eyed girls from anime and manga that the Japanese embrace. But Gaga achieved the look with makeup, I think. She just did the “big eye” look on her eyelids, and THEN SHE KEPT HER EYES SHUT. The entire time.

Gaga not only performed, she did a press conference (video below) where she discussed her struggles (although I think she’s still telling some lies about what it was like for her to grow up in Manhattan, but whatever), and she says that her own struggles made her understand that people should “Never give up on the dream of Japan; never give up on the dream of its people; and never give up on the dream of the future.” A lovely sentiment, which Gaga said WITH HER EYES CLOSED. She’s… crazy…? Or is she just trying too hard? Or should we give her credit for really believing in a look and working to pull it off? Eh.

i wonder how she moved around especially with those ridiculous heels. was she carried?.
did she identify people by voice recognition, touch or just asking them who they are?!
    the mind boggles.

  2. UKHels says:

    soooooo over gaga!!!!

  3. Amy says:

She kept her eyes closed and she wore those ridiculous shoes?

I even had a dream last night about trying on a pair of Lady Gaga type heels and I was like “How does she manage to walk in these? They hurt like hell!”
Of course it was a dream, but I can’t imagine walking in those heels to be comfortable!

  4. kelbear says:

    She looks absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!

  5. nnn says:

Why is this woman glorified ?

  6. malachais says:

They don’t really look like anime eyes to me, this is a WHOLE lot nicer:

I just want to see one youtube video of her falling in those stupid heels.

  7. dread pirate cuervo says:

    The eyes are creepy.

  8. ursula says:

hahahaha 🙂 so she put on granny shades and walked with her eyes closed lol someone knows their fifteen minutes are just about up

  9. MarenGermany says:

that interview was awkward. a lot of bla bla, and yes, she is totally lying about how hard she had it growing up (on the Upper East Side.)
yawn, why doesnt she focus more on her music?

  10. The Truth Fairy says:

  11. Maritza says:

She has been lucky she hasn’t broken her ankles with those ridiculous shoes she wears. I think Lady Gaga just likes to entertain and people already expect something outrageous from her. She could make a bundle of money if she sells those outfits for charity, she won’t be wearing them again anyway.

  12. munchies says:

i think the eyes are fun and for sure Japanese loves it! Too much hatred people, She did it for her fans! If you see crazy anime costumes in Japan, they are more crazy then hers! But then, shes Lady Gaga.

  13. Riana says:

She did the anime eyes before and considering the area I think the criticism is silly, there’s a level of eccentricity celebrated in Japan which is just pouted on over here.

Gwen Stefani shined a bit of a spotlight on the Harajuku fashion over here. Besides…are people really surprised by makeup compared to the time she wore head to toe lace covering everything including her face?

  14. BeckyR says:

Happy Halloween–could she get any uglier? She is a huge joke.

  15. Shay says:

Every time I see her stupid shoes I want to push her over.

  16. Turtle Dove says:

Used to like her a lot, but it’s too much now. Her constant alterations have become banal and uninteresting. Gaga says that she’s a student of fame and media mastery, but she has no idea how burned out everyone is with her image.

Even the Queen of pop, Madonna, takes breaks and doesn’t bombard the media with ridiculous outfits, etc. Girl needs to go back to school and learn a few more lessons cause she’s not going to have the longevity of Madge.

  17. richie says:

LOL!! out of her all ridiculous looks this is passable but whats creepy is she keeping ehr eyes shut the entire time!! GOD them shoes! that’s hideous!!!!

  18. MissVJJ says:

I grew up in Japan loving anime.. And those arent anime eyes.. WTF! She needs to fire here eyeball-artist.. Dumbass..

  19. umabrasileira says:

  20. Tiffany says:

Damn, I was so hoping she was going to walk off in those shoes with her eyes closed and eat some major carpet!

  21. teehee says:

I dont care, so long she did it for charity and you know she pulled a lot for people who need it. Good for that!

  22. kiko says:

anime eyes are supposed to be beautiful and colorful not a black mess!anime fail!

  23. Mia says:

We got to give Gaga some credit…she kept her eyes closed the entire time with those shoes!!!!

  24. Jacq says:

Everything about her just bothers the living hell out of me.

  25. Kick says:

    Talking about gaga and japan:

“Gaga sued over alleged charity scam… Lady Gaga charges $5 for a “We Pray for Japan” wristband, another $3.99 for shipping and handling and $0.60 for tax. The lawsuit alleges that Gaga got greedy by inflating the shipping cost and pocketing the extra and refusing to disclose how much of the $5 actually goes to the Japanese victims.”

  26. Riana says:

Yeah, my only real complaint is it was done wrong. The eyes should be smaller and you still need eyebrows to frame the look.

  27. curmudgeon says:

Still find her entertaining as long as she doesn’t speak. Then I inevitably want to smack her.

  28. Kiska says:

What an idiot. She always needs to have a look hat screams out how unique and different she is. What she needs is some heavy duty therapy and a podiatrist.

  29. LOVE ANGELINA says:

LOVE THE EYES!!!! Gaga isn’t the first to do this, there is a tutorial on Youtube by a very talented young woman who goes by the screen name “myeyeshadowisodd”, which is “My eyeshadow is odd” with no spaces, on how to do this…it would make a great Halloween look but I gotta applaud Gaga for wearing this look on a red carpet.

  30. Aagje says: if you want to see a compilation of Gaga falling on her ass. Made my day for sure.

Never liked her, never will and I sincerely hope that soon everyone will realise her relevance has never been there and never will.

  31. Bellooo says:

    hahaha, AWESOME!! What a nut!

  32. Bill Hicks is God says:

What are you folks? Dried-up old farts who’ve forgotten how to play and have fun? She’s doing her thing (whatever that may be) having a blast and making money.

She’s not doing anything different than Alice Cooper, KISS (in their heyday), Bowie, Slipknot, Gwar or anyone else with a gimmick in the business. All the aforementioned never made any public appearance without their schtick or in Bowie’s case, personas that he lived 24/7.

Mabye this is just who she is like Nina Hagen, Lena Lovitch, Prince, Boy George or Grace Jones and simply “weird.” Again, so what.

And a copycat? Cripes all of the above could be said to have “copied” Little Richard, Josephine Baker, Gay or punk subculture, the horror film genre, religious/occult themes and incorporated it into what they do and how they present(ed) themselves.

Why does GaGa bother you so much? She’s not working in your frigging bank, she’s a performer, an entertainer and doing very well at.

If you don’t like her don’t listen to her music, don’t look at her. She’s popular but not exactly ubiquitous, so there’s always something else to occupy your attention with.

Go throw on some glitter and lighten the hell up already.

  33. Lucky Charm says:

ENOUGH! Please, just stop now! Is this woman so insecure about her music and abilities that she feels this constant need to distract with her crazy outfits? If she wants to be a singer, then she needs to focus on her music and not on looking ridiculous. Same goes for Rhianna.

  34. original kate says:

gaga isn’t the first artist to be wacky and she won’t be the last. elton john, david bowie, peter gabriel, etc. all embraced the glamrock look but as an aspect of performing, not the entire thing. and when they dropped the goofy costumes they could, because they had real talent to back it up. 30 years later, these artists are still around. madonna in her early days was pretty outrageous, but she always did it with a wink and made it fun. that’s something that seems to be missing with gaga -she’s so humorless.

  35. Lady D says:

Mia, it’s because of those shoes that she kept her eyes shut!

  36. Alexa says:

Hmmm. . . I quite like her and am still entertained by her eccentricities and flamboyance. You all say how unoriginal she is, but you don’t see that many outrageously unconventional looking people at one time. (I guess I still haven’t gotten enough of it.)

  37. Oi says:

Enough already. Seriously. She is grasping at straws for ideas isn’t she.

  38. faye says:

  39. Jen D says:

AAAAHHHH! That is what my nightmares are going to look like for the next few weeks. Anyways, at least she’s interesting. I always click on a link with her because I’m never bored. I wish she would stand up a bit straighter. She has terrible posture. God, I sound like my mother.

  40. Ron says:

    Double stuff eyes.

  41. daisy says:

    same shoes..again. bust bedazzled

  42. Darlene says:

I admire her devotion to the “bit”. I think the eyes could have been done a bit better, though.

  43. Kimbob says:

I shouldn’t, but feel compelled to put in my opinion, too.

    1) Gaga is not on my “favorites” list, by a long shot, however, I do feel like she has a VERY LARGE AND GRACIOUS HEART. She truly appreciates her fans, goes to great lengths to show her affection & appreciation…&, to me, this is so refreshing. In light of the celebrities out there now, & their sense of entitlement (where that comes from I don’t know), some of them being outright nasty in public (Avril Lavigne), & how it’s so obvious they feel they are “better than,” YES, Gaga is a breath of fresh air. She seems to have some humility. That being said…

    2) This “anime eye-look” that she was attempting….NO! If I try hard & focus on what she’s trying to present…I can KIND OF see it…but what I REALLY SEE is just a pathetic attempt. What I really see is heavy over-blown make-up & that she’s standing there w/her eyes closed. It’s like she had this idea, & just “did it” spontaneously, & IT DOESN’T WORK (@ least for me). She’s not even putting much thought..she gets an idea & just does it for the public. She’s not trying these ideas out & “testing” first, to see how she really presents. THIS IS THE WORK OF AN EXTREMELY AMATEUR “artist.” It’s kindergarten stuff. I’m not even getting the vibe of artist w/her…that’s a too sophisticated title for the crap she’s putting out there.

3)I think Gaga has a beautiful voice…however, her music is not edgy (doesn’t “go” w/the look she presents). Her music (w/the exception of like, 3 songs) is SO BORING. The music is really just so boring, so manufactured..kinda like 70’s reject, side B “filler songs” to make a complete CD.

4)I’m tired of her drama. The way she spoke of her past, where/what she “came from” to be what she is today (in the clip provided)…oh PULEEZ. I feel this is complete fabrication, the likes of which is a desperate plea for more press…more attention. I don’t doubt for 1 minute that she had to work really, really hard to become famous, but she’s almost trying to present herself like she came from the ghetto, & almost like she’s implying that she was an unloved, abused child. I KNOW she did not say this…but w/all the drama in her delivery…one could get such an impression….which I feel she’s trying to invoke sympathy from the public. I think she came from a nice, middle-class family.

Yes, she seems to definitely be trying too hard, like she’s still desperate for attention…and the lies don’t sit well w/me.

  44. mt says:

that’s how i should attend meetings at work from now on. might as well get some good shut eye.

  45. teehee says:

Uh oh she’s being sued for pocketing some of the charity funds…. I dont believe it; it needs to be proven. I think shes got enough of her own funds. This will be interesting to follow though. (I dont think she would do that.)

  46. The Truth Fairy says:

@ teehee “Uh oh she’s being sued for pocketing some of the charity funds…. I don’t believe it; it needs to be proven.”

Uh, yeah. That’s the whole point of a lawsuit.

  47. DethHammer says:

@Kick- if you can post a link where it says Gaga is being sued over the bracelet charity money please post it!

Ugh, I think it’s safe to say that 99% of us are suffering from Gaga exhaustion (the other 1% are her cult members lol).

The eye makeup doesn’t really look like anime eyes because the there’s no iris and pupil sketched in; I can clearly see her black eyelid.

Lady Gaga Admits Telling Lies in Interviews:

I’m REALLY tired of those Noritaka Tatehana heel-less shoes; they’re so boring at this point.

  48. toy says:

those shoes are very funny, she nees to seen a doctor…………i dont like her

  49. logan says:

I would love it if she came out on stage in a pair of black pants, black top, normal shoes, sat on stool and just sang. No costumes, no outlandish makeup, no props, just sing.
Might just be a beautiful thing.
No need to hide behind all the glitter and bedazzle. Just sing!

  50. Marie says:

Oh please. Isn’t it very inappropriate to stand there and nag and lie about your poor upbringing (didn’t she go to the same school as Paris Hilton?) and tought times when you’re at a fundraising for tsunami victims? It becomes pretty insignificant in comparison.
And someone said that she seems more humble than many artists nowadays, for me it just seems so incredibly fake and as a devious act to make the naive tweener fans out there believe that she cares about them and that they have a monster-bond or whatever. Just stupid, exploitive and fake.

  51. jover says:

Agree original kate: it’s well known and in biographies her parents helped her to get in clubs and get before producers; rob fusari also helped her, and he’s a music insider; but the fact that she never laughs at herself illustrates her insecurity; her music is disposable pop, nothing more, btw was written with three other people the pop song of the decade supposedly isn’t even entirely hers, and weird al’s spoof is better; laugh at me if you want but, for ex.,millions have seen zep’s legendary msg 1973 performance on youtube, and the comments are always the same – where’s my time machine and who plays like that anymore; lady xerox is painfully average; you have to be ignorant of all music older than 10 yrs to say she’s great, and no one 20-30 yrs. from now is going to say I need a time machine to watch her 2011 hbo special. Sorry, the amount of attention she garners is out of all proportion to her music. Marie, it was nicky H.

  52. RHONYC says:

these are her ‘toon’ eyes from that were digitized in the ‘Bad Romance’ video.

    super cool & hilarious.

why people get in such a stitch about her getups is beyond me. she’s got a wild imagination & expresses it through fashion.
so what. big deal. big woop.

how in the hell she walks around in those platforms, i’ll never know!

    p.s.- those nails are DANGEROUS!

  53. DethHammer says:

“Gaga’s deceptive advertising and personal profits from the bracelets violated federal racketeering laws and a slew of consumer protection laws, too, the suit claimed.”

We’ll see how this pans out, and whether or not this will actually go to court. More than likely it will be thrown out, because unless the accounting books are cracked open and there is proof she pocketed funds, Gaga is just too big of a celebrity to pin down.

  54. taksi says:

I’m not a big fan of her music or costumes, and I think she’s a bit of a pretentious twat. But that said, I love this! I admire her commitment. It’s hilarious and ridiculous but goddamnit she’s going to do it.

No, it’s not the first time this has been done but it’s probably the first time a lot of people have seen that look.

In the interviews I’ve seen, she’s charismatic, gracious, and she’s still trying to be new every time whereas a lot of other celebs are on automatic; that’s admirable.

  55. LOVE ANGELINA says:

OMG I agree with @Bill Hicks is God on something. I totally agree with you Bill Hicks.

  56. Jb says:

Excuse me, but what’s up with all the haters?!? I truly believe she is sincere and creative and this is not sone sort of “act.” She is consistently positive and passionate. And of course she “tries too hard,” she’s an artist and performer. I think she’s amazing. Jeeeeeeez

  57. Mika says:

Meh, I kind of dig it.

  58. mrsezc says:

    she’s such a cartoon

  59. Ga Ga Gross says:

All that tacky make-up and clothing will not cover her fugly face and lack of talent.

  60. artichoke says:

this is so much fun! i love it. first time in a minute since she’s impressed me. what a riot!

  61. Annie_Grey says:

Gaga is looking more and more like someone’s crazy Grandma.

  62. judyjudy says:

Forget the eyes, forget the shoes, it’s those nails…ACK!

  63. lowen says:

at only 5’1″, no wonder she always wears those ridiculous shoes

  64. JJ says:

She had those eyes when she shot the Hello Kitty campaign. It was featured on the tv show Double Exposure.

  65. kwoww says:

she’s needs to spend less time on her makeup and more time writing music. that last album was awful.

  66. Alice says:

Seen it before. Definitely not a unique idea. Try harder, Gaga.

  67. lizzy says:

@malachais – Great link, I spent a good 20 minutes on youtube looking at similar videos.

@Aagje – Lol. My fave fall was where she was going up on stage in that huge feathery-looking white outfit.

  68. april says:

    All of it is gross.

  69. Pensol says:

Haterz gonna hate and Gaga gonna keep having hella lotsa fun. Right on, @Bill Hicks Is God! Beeee-dah to the crusty old haters!

  70. eternalcanadian says:

Most bizarre. Makes me wonder what Halloween will be like this year. 😮

  71. Eryn says:

Who cares about her? Isn’t anybody going to say anything about those horrible Philadelphia logos in the background? Is cream cheese glamorous in Japan? lol

  72. DanDan says:

AAAAA…giant BEE! Got scared there for a moment. YUCK.

  73. KLaw says:

Eryn, that’s a good question! In Italy, where they have LOADS of delicious fresh cheeses to chose from DAILY, Philly cream cheese is still quite popular. ???

I’m an American and I tried it – it tastes different than it does in the US. Or maybe that was the Italian air…?

Maybe that explains Japan, too? I dunno. But those Philadelphians are smart and making lots of money.

Gaga makes money for her talents – singing and being weird. Glad she is helping Japan!!

  74. Carolyn says:

The only thing you can use Philly cheese for is cheesecakes. If Gaga was there to help raise money for Japan great. Those eyes are the stuff of weird nightmares. Wish she’d spend more time on her music.

  75. Toe says:

What is with all the hate? This make-up style is old. She did this like a year ago. There is nothing shocking about it. It’s just a tribute to anime cartoon and i like it. In the photo shoot they took more time doing the make-up though.

  76. May says:

She is one ugly woman 🙂

  77. ladybert62 says:

That outfit is horrible but the eyes are hysterical! How did she walk in those shoes and if she had her eyes closed how could she walk even without those shoes?

  78. Bill Hicks is God says:

    @Love Angelina: LOL – Whaddya know? 😉

  79. Sakyiwaa says:

well, it goes without saying… And one thing’s for certain, Gaga never CEASES to amuse me…

  80. Jana says:

I agree 100 percent with Kimbob’s post. Spot on.

  81. sirsly says:

So boring, budget and zero creativity.

(Only redeeming quality is her support for equality/gay rights. I’ll give her that.)

  82. LuvHotGuyFri says:

I don’t need to see this sh@t-this is creepy and stupid-another desperate attempt for attention. Get back in your dumb egg.
    Not a fan.

  83. harfang says:

Why all the hate? Because I’m not a violent person, and I truly am concerned about the extent to which I’ll have to focus on not punching her in the face if I ever meet her. Normally I only worry about that kind of thing with Roman Polanski and Ike Turner…

  84. ash says:

I don’t like gaga but the eyes are pretty cool in my opinion. Hate to admit it. lol

  85. pfft says:

she went to one of the richest schools in manhattan. She was born into money. what a liar! “ddn’t come from much”! hahahaha LIES

  86. Kate says:

I love it! so cool and in japan anime is iconic.

  87. DDD Cups of Justice says:

Why are people whining about her eyes not looking like anime? She looks just like Astro Boy to me. Seemed like she was going for an “old-school” anime look.

  88. Constance says:

I honestly expected her outfit to be a little more anime-ish.
those don’t look like cat eyes they look like the eyes off one of those creepy coo coo cat clocks lol

  89. Attractive section of content. I just stumbled upon your website and in accession capital to assert that I get in fact loved account your weblog posts. Any way I?ll be subscribing to your feeds and even I success you get right of entry to consistently quickly.

  90. Drew says:

Notice how all the GaGa bashers on here seem to know a lot about her lol. She’s a breath of fresh air to the Music scene and one of the few perfomers who always sings live on stage, never mimes.Best entertainer around just now by a mile,if peeps dont like her then don’t listen to or look at her, simple.
