Duchess Kate in Sarah Burton for McQueen: budget Ralph Lauren?

fp_7554252_barm_william_18_20

Here are new photos of the Duchess of Cambridge in Prince Edward Island, Canada yesterday. First up, she wore this “nautical” themed ensemble from Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, which I would never have guessed. Sarah Burton’s eye is SO much different than McQueen, and this looks like a years-old Ralph Lauren ensemble rather than a modern ready-to-wear piece from one of the most exciting British design houses. You may remember, Kate’s wedding dress was also done by Burton for McQueen too. While I think that this outfit – and Kate’s wedding gown – were appropriate and lovely and all, I still get stuck on “WTF happened to the House of McQueen?”

After that event, Kate did a costume change into a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt-like thing and a jacket, all for a dragon boat race in which she competed against her husband. For those who enjoy a little history with their fashion posts, in 2007, Kate memorably signed on for, and trained for a boat race. That was when she and William split up, and she was looking for something to occupy her time (not a job, silly!). When William persuaded her to take him back (i.e., he called her), she dropped out of the boat race. I do enjoy how handsy they are together. They seem like real newlyweds, and I think both of them are enjoying this tour so much because they get to do it together.

Meanwhile, according to ABC’s Bob Woodward, Kate told an older gentlemen that she “hopes” to have children. I have no idea why this is big news in royal coverage, considering if Kate did NOT hope to have children, she never would have been a royal bride (first rule of the royal family: create more royals). According to Woodward, Kate “walked over to this group of parents and there were these two little girls that wanted to give them these flowers, they handed them over to her as she squatted down and then one of the fathers told us he came up to her and wished her the best for when she ultimately has a family and she went back and said, quote, ‘Yes, I hope to.’ No timing about when she wants to do that and all that, but very interesting.”

The couple is adorable. The dress is too costumey, shoes too matchy. Screams “Talbots” to me, not McQueen. I like her hair pulled back, though, a refreshing change.

  2. Sloane Wyatt says:

Pretty and safe dress, but it hangs on Catherine Princess No Hips!

Love the happy photos of the couple in jeans.

  3. Bailey says:

this dress makes her look years older.

  4. Kiki says:

she looks nicely put together minus the black eyeliner. very athletic body- good for her.

  5. asiont says:

this dress is awful! and where are her hips???

  6. Tierra says:

I loved the pics of them while they were boating. Its nice to see her in jeans and casual wear for a change. They looked like they were really having a good time together and looked so cute they way William was holding her.

  7. Flounder says:

her hair is always so awful.

  8. Lisa Turtle says:

I love that Burton for McQueen dress, I think its by far the most interesting and unexpected thing that Waity has worn on this tour.

As for starting a family… the poor girl isn’t going to have an easy time of it… She’s a cigarette smoker (Photographic evidence of this exists- she smokes camel lights!) — and she’s also 10-15 lbs underweight. Best of luck to them, but Kate probably needs to gain some weight before she can have a healty pregnancy.

As for the casual jeans – Duchess Waity has a bum only a Brit could love! Flat as a pancake.

  9. rachel says:

I know the post is about her clothes, but I felt compelled to mention that she has become alarmingly thin. William has known her for a decade or more and knows she was not always like this. With his mother’s history, how can he turn a blind eye to this? I saw a video of them in PEI and Kate is shown giving her food (lobster?) to William.

  10. Jackson says:

The outfit isn’t bad though for what she’s doing, for her ‘job.’ Wow, she is really, really skinny. No way she is not on some kind of strict eating plan. I am troubled to see that she is still doing the harsh eyeliner although I guess it matches the piping on her sailor suit. Ugh.

  11. dorothy says:

I love this couple. What a sharp contrast between these two and Monaco’s Albert and his bride.

  12. Miss Marie says:

People, please stop picking on her.

  13. DesertRose says:

When did Kate become so thin? Her body looks strikingly similar to Falcor’s, she doesn’t look healthy.

  14. Eleonor says:

To the Mc Queen’s house is happening what happened to the Versace’s house after the death of Gianni: he style of its founders was too personal an no one can fill their shoeses.

  15. ladybert62 says:

    I LOVE that nautical outfit!

  16. Hmmm says:

She has no hips. She has no hips. She has no hips… That’s the problem with almost everything she wears- that lack is accentuated, spotlighted rather than diminished. Why focus on her least favourable feature? What is wrong with her advisors?

Btw, does anyone know what her best feature is besides her legs?

I think the clothing comes across as dull because she is a dull Stepford Waity.

  17. telesma says:

I don’t really dislike the style of the dress, but it’s poorly executed – downmarket RL knockoff is definitely the feel. And the tailoring is awful. Look at how uneven the skirt hangs. The shoes are also terrible with it. Entirely the wrong shade of blue, they should be much darker, and probably not suede.

And really, someone needs to take that mop of hers in hand. Some long layers to thin it out and add some shape, put it in an updo, something.

  18. KJ says:

So the two pieces that Kate Middleton picks from Burton for McQueen are somehow indicative of her artistic vision as a whole for the label? It couldn’t be, maybe, because Kate’s style is for a lack of a better word safe and boring that she chose and asked for safe and boring stuff from Sarah Burton? Got it.

Why don’t we wait at least a season or two before we start calling the collapse of McQueen. I refuse to let Kate Middletons unremarkable style be the measuring stick by which Sarah Burton is judged.

And yea. She needs to eat. That’s not “natural” thinness. That is calculated, achieved thinness. And it doesn’t look good on her.

  19. Rachel says:

I LOVE that dress. I’m pretty sure it’s older McQueen as Sarah Jessica Parker wore it in blue in 2006.

  20. badrockandroll says:

If you had to tour a historical site, watch a First Nations dramatic production, shake hands with hundreds of strangers and watch your husband do a mock sea rescue in a helicoptor on a cool and rainy day in the public eye, and you had to do it all in one outfit, what would it be?

  21. RHONYC says:

i must need a pulse cause i find her as interesting as a ballpoint pen. 🙁

  22. orion70 says:

I think the nautical outfit was supposed to have been some nod to Anne of Green Gables. Similar to something like this:
    http://www.fanpop.com/spots/anne-of-green-gables/images/4289503/title/anne-avonlea-screencap

On a related note, people really should be more careful with that whole “so when are you guys going to start a family?” No one ever knows what a couple is going through or their personal choices when it comes to this. I’ve known people who suffered several miscarriages all the while people were nudging them in the ribs and joking with them about when they were going to start popping out babies.

  23. lasherola says:

That dress is beautiful and she looks great!!!

  24. whitedaisy says:

    She is lovely.

  25. guesty says:

She’s almost too skinny. Not loving that dress.

  26. spinner says:

She really is a striking woman. Love her in the casual attire & I am sure the Nautical ensemble is a nod to Ann of Green Gables. Her hair is gorgeous. It is so thick & shiny. I want it!!

  27. Marytere says:

I love this couple, they look so cute together, you can see they love each other.

  28. if this girl looks that skinny in pictures, can you imagine what she looks like in real person? and why is William going bald? I would think he could afford the best hair plugs available. William is not going to look hot bald that’s for sure.

  29. embertine says:

I love the dress because it looks exactly like a cricket jumper gone rogue.

I don’t get all this stuff about royal brides pumping out babies, and I only ever see this on American sites. This is not the 16th century – no-one, probably including his family would care if they decided not to have children. Perhaps you think we all live in castles and settle arguments by jousting?

  30. GoofPuff says:

Oh wow wills is losing a lot of hair. Kate is also way thinner than she was before the wedding hoopla. But they are happy. Hopefully she’ll go back to her healthy athletic frame.

  31. Esmom says:

@19, I like SJP’s version much better, the color and the styling. But now that I think about it I guess Kate’s version is perfectly serviceable for her “job,” as #10 and 20 pointed out. I think it’s too much to expect or hope for some flair or style in her ensembles.

  32. baby says:

yeah i’m really surprised that’s McQueen too!!! the hell?! but they are SO CUTE. i love them together. they are all about each other, it geniuinely shows

  33. Vee says:

I am usually immune to royals and their shenanigans – but this couple is winning me over. They are completely charming and adorable! I think her dresses have been lovely and conservative, appropriate for the role she is playing.

  34. kris says:

Love Kate-but she dressed so much cuter before she got married

  35. Cheyenne says:

Lisa Turtle: As for starting a family… the poor girl isn’t going to have an easy time of it… She’s a cigarette smoker and she’s also 10-15 lbs underweight.
    =============================================

So? I smoked when I was pregnant and was 15 lbs underweight, and got pregnant my first month off birth control pills. I doubt she’ll have any trouble when they are ready to start their family.
    _________________________________________________________

Miss Marie: People, please stop picking on her.
    =============================================

Co-sign. She looks fine. Some jealous heffas posting on here.

  36. Tiffany says:

I think her hair is her best feature. It is gorgeous!
I HATE the style of shoes she chooses to wear. Hello, 80’s pumps!
Love the casual jeans pics and she may have a tough time getting preggers if she doesn’t gain a bit of weight.

  37. guilty pleasures says:

Beautiful, and I say again, she is a future queen, all of these photos are fodder for history books, she is not a trashy fame-ho looking for attention, the attention looks for her.
And, for all of you who call her ‘Waity’ and decry her setting her sights on the FREAKING FUTURE KING OF ENGLAND – are you serious??? Who would not aspire to those heights, given the chance? Get over your smug, ‘ I would never wait for any man’ and look at the man you waited for, you may love him, but is he going to be King?
If you want to argue the anthropological side, what more Alpha can you get to sire your children? I say well done Duchess, well done.

  38. Lady D says:

I have been skin and bones my whole life, ‘with no hips’. I was on birth control for 10 years, then it failed me. I got pregnant 20 pounds underweight, while still on the pill.
On a happier note, 23 years later I have started to gain weight. (I’m 50 now) I’ve gained 10 pounds since last August, still waiting for the other 10, but at least now I have hope!

  39. Chrissy says:

@embertine – you are kidding right? Both The Telegraph and Daily Mail had front page articles on Kate being ” broody” after she made that comment. Trust me, “broody” isn’t something us Americans say when describing a woman who wants to have a baby. I agree that people need to leave them alone about it but it’s not the US press that is pressuring them.

  40. Anguishedcorn says:

I think it’s adorable (but agree it’s very Talbots). However– holy cow, she is buttless. Those jeans really show it.

  41. Hellen says:

Horrible dress – it accentuates all her worst features (no hips, flat butt). And the skirt is so uneven it’s tragic. Completely boring shoes. She could look SO much better!

  42. bluhare says:

I was thinking nautical/Anne of Green Gables, as well, but then I realized, Prince Edward Island is a maritime province. Duh, bluhare!

I don’t think she’s put a foot wrong so far. I bet she wishes she was William sometimes, though. No hair worries (other than losing more and more), and for all we know he’s worn the same blue suit the whole time! I bet he’s proud as hell of her, and really glad she waited. 🙂

    And they hugged!!!

  43. trolleydolly says:

Actually the worst dress I have seen on her – and I usually love her dress sense. This Sarah Burton wan – I’m not convinced by her talent. Kate’s wedding dress and evening dress was very badly boned/darted in the bust area and unflattering and this dress is just awful on her. And I thought she brought her hairstylist? He should have sorted out the flyaways!

But I think so far she has acquitted herself admirably in Canada!

  44. aquarius64 says:

For those knocking her outfits – given who she is she can’t wear biscuit grazers. You guys kill me expecting her to dress like every starlet in Hollywood. Women in these positions cannot dress like a stripper or a hooker.

  45. Nymeria says:

Waity has the body of an athlethic 9 year old boy. No curves, very little evidence of breasts, etc. Which is fine, but holding this up as the standard to which women should all aspire is ridiculous. And I firmly believe she is entrenched in some kind of fight to starve off every pound she possibly can. This is not “naturally skinny” – we’ve watched her for nearly a decade, and she was never this thin. This is, as someone said before me, a deliberate plan to become as thin as possible.

  46. Ron says:

This is a retread of a McQueen dress from 2005/2006 when AMQ was alive. It was done in navy then. I believe SJP wore it back then.

  47. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I seriously believe she has an eating disorder. She now looks like a bobble-head, compared to her emaciated body. I just hope somebody in her family REALLY cares about HER (and not her “image”) and starts some kind of intervention. Seriously. Because if they turn a blind eye, and tell her she looks great this thin, they are enablers who don’t really care about her health (her hairline is receding, as it does with many women who starve themselves). I don’t FOR A MINUTE believe that her husband truly loves her (and not the role she plays – admittedly, quite well), if he doesn’t notice how she’s starving herself, or worse – doesn’t care. It’s sad.

  48. gamblea says:

I love the picture where they hug and smile. Why can’t royals pda in public?

  49. cz says:

I think she dresses completely appropriate for her role….that being said…I just don’t really care about the royals coverage.

  50. Lisa Turtle says:

Hey Cheyenne, congratulations on smoking while pregnant. (!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!)

    Oh, wait… whats that…

    http://www.webmd.com/baby/smoking-during-pregnancy

There is no “safe” level of smoking while pregnant.

    http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/smoking.html

Smoking during pregnancy leads to an increased change of miscarriage. Smoking during pregnancy can cause your baby to have more colds, lung problems, learning disabilities, and physical growth problems.

So in conclusion Chey Chey, I’m not sure that smoking while pregnant is really something you should proudly declare while calling anonymous strangers “heffas” – is being thin worth jeopardizing the health of your unborn child? I think that most of us would agree – No its not worth it.

Good luck with all that crazy though, I’m sure your child will thank you one day for smoking while pregnant.

  51. Anonymous says:

Mrs. Krabapple – you are right on the money. If William is any indication, she won’t get the help she needs from the royals, so hopefully her parents will step in.

  52. marge says:

she really needs some meat on her hips, or else she’ll start to look like a clothes hanger

  53. cookb says:

I LOVE her style – she always looks elegant, lovely, event appropriate and NOT elitist. KATE & WILL FOREVER!!!!

  54. JulieM says:

Who goes boating wearing an 18 kt sapphire and diamond ring? Especially one inherited from your late mother-in- law.

Lisa Turtle: Well said. Everyone should smoke while pregnant, yes?

The white ensemble looks terrible on her with her ironing board figure. Waity usually does a better job than this.

  55. Leigh says:

Lisa Turtle. You’re too fab. I’m LOVING your response to Cheyanne’s smoking comment!! And you’re bang on. SMOKING IS BAD FOR YOU. Even worse if you’re pregnant – I wouldn’t advertise that Cheyanne. Statistics show that it IS more difficult to get pregnant if you are underweight. All of Lisa Turtle’s points were more than fair.

I do not like the dress. I feel like the drop waist on it does something funny to her proportions.

  56. mimi says:

Where are her hips/ thighs/ waistline?

She looks like an elongated little girl with a 40 years old woman- face.

But she is so happy to be famous and get her picture taken.
    She loves it.

  57. HME says:

I LOVE the sailor outfit, it’s my favorite by far. I think it is DEFINITELY supposed to be a bit of a tribute to Anne of Green Gables. I think its really sweet that Kate is such a fangirl of those books! Its nice to finally see her in a slightly different silhouette, I love the way the skirt flares out at the hem. And her hair is pulled back! She needs to wear her hair in a ponytail more often, it gets her hair off of her shoulders, stops her playing with it and it doesn’t age her like the updo she wore on Canada Day.

  58. Julbug says:

I love how happy he really looks, finally.

  59. benny says:

Good God, did some poster above really defend smoking while pregnant?!?!

Mothers in my day did it because they didn’t know any better — but there is NO EXCUSE for any woman in this day and age to smoke while pregnant. She would either have to be retarded, or so utterly uncaring about her fetus that she’s willing to risk birth defects and more. Utterly disgusting.

And I, too, think Kate is too thin. (I do think she dresses pleasantly enough, and I DON’T expect her to be some trend-setting fashion horse). But do you know what those photos of Kate remind me of? The Ralph Lauren pics where the models’ bodies were photoshopped so thin that they looked like praying mantis. I do think Kate has some kind of problem with her dieting.

  60. Snappyfish says:

Sarah Burton was Lee’s protégée. She is designing for the occasion of the dress. Not for the McQueen runway.!! What happened to Versace is very different. Donatella used Gianni’s designs until she HAD to design of which she is incapable. Sarah Burton is a brilliant designer. She will keep a very watchful eye over McQueen’s vision as long as she with the house.

With that said. The dress is safe as it should be & she looks darling. She looks great in the jeans, she is not too thin, her hair is beautiful and they are ADORABLE.

  61. Ashley says:

That’s McQueen?!?! How tragic. It’s fug and though I love the 20’s this looks like something straight out The Great Gastby (like it should have stayed and died there).

The jeans pics are funny. Even if a girl doesn’t have an ass, jeans usually give some lift and therefore an appearance of one, but her, it’s as flat as can be.

Snappy fish- McQueen ready to wear isn’t even that boring. I’m so tired of people saying Sarah was his protege, obviously she learned nothing from him and there’s a reason she stayed his protege (until he died).

  62. lolas says:

The trouble with the dress is Kate is actually too thin (never thought I’d say that, esp about McQueen, as his dresses seemed best suited for the lean, not curvy) for it. It accentuates everything wrong – her shoulders look too broad, her torso looks too long. I think this dress would be very cute, and perhaps a bit cheekier on a curvier, bustier woman. I also just have to add that Kate wore a dress the other day that she had worn for her engagement photos, and you can see in the engagement photos the dress is fitted on her arms, and in the more recent picture the sleeves look baggy. I don’t know about eating disorder, I can imagine in her position the stress of her new life could make her lose weight (I would), but either way, she could stand to gain some weight back.

  63. Ashley says:

embertine – yeah right the Royals wouldn’t mind if they didn’t have children? You are obviously having a laugh. The English would crucify her if she didn’t have their next hair and spare (her only job in life) and the Queen would probably take 2.5 seconds to decide that divorce is a good thing. If you don’t plan on or don’t want to have children, here’s a thought, don’t marry the future King of England.

An American thing, yeah right Americans couldn’t care less about her future pregnancy. The English must have a very high opinion of themselves because they’re always bringing us in to their arguments. We don’t want a monarchy and we definitely don’t want yours. I think Diana was the last time any American actually cared about the Royals. This is all nice for a few hours but the public has been getting tired of their overload. We have more important things to worry about. And if we wanted a useless clothes horse who is famous for nothing we’d turn to a Kardashian or the hundreds of others we have.

  64. Crys says:

ok here she looks like a toothpick. that ruffle at the bottom of the skirt is not flattering…

  65. Cirque28 says:

Meh. I give the Duchess a lot of fashion leeway. Can you imagine choosing clothes when you know the photos will go out around the world EVERY damn day? I struggle over what to wear for walking the dog! And I’m just thinking, “Will it rain?” instead of:

Does my new husband think I’m hawt?
Does it say royalty and yet also I’m just a regular girl so pls don’t dismantle the monarchy?
Is it demure enough to keep the Queen at bay?
    WTH is Will wearing?
    How will it photograph?

I know, I know. She has help with all of this and she’s had years to prep. STILL. How anyone gets dressed knowing THAT picture might be the one in the history books is beyond me.

  66. Dirty Martini says:

Girlfriends butt is flatter than a 13 year old boys.

  67. Snappyfish says:

McQueen’s first job was cutting suits for HRH the Prince of Wales. One of his main concerns with his House was the ability to cut a garment. Of which the House is brilliant. The gown Burton did for the wedding looked as good in motion as. It did when Catherine was standing still. The mark of true design.

Those who are familiar with McQeen’s runway shows only know of the haute couture lines that henhas executed so brilliant with many of those designs over that 3 years of his life being that of Sarah Burton.

McQueen’s Pret-a-porter line has been & still is a v v British line that is currently dressing the new Duchess. Burton was not only Lee’s protégée but the shoulder he used to support him during his mother’s illness.

So whether or not one likes the dresses Burton is creating for the Duchess, she shows in her talent all that she learned from Lee & I am sure he is more than proud. He did leave his beloved House in her hands.

I hate to think people though McQueen was only one dimensional. His was so much more than that. I have lovely suits & amazing dresses that are all McQueen and unless I wore them inside out you would never know they were from the same house. But they do have 1 thing in common…..they are magnifencently cut, sharp enough to cut glass

  68. Luckylilgem says:

She is blessed with gorgeous legs!

  69. She in Chi says:

This gal is shrinking in front of all the world. If you look at photos from their courtship, Kate had shape and substance. Her Prada pumps look like the anchor that is keeping her from floating away. What message is this sending to every young girl that sees her? Stop eating and land yourself a future king! Hooray!

Rather than niggle over how boring or safe her dress is, why don’t we all agree that Kate needs some weight. Her shape is alarming to me.

  70. phaksi says:

@Hmmm your right, her cloathes accentuate that she doesnt have an ounce of fat, but not in a good way. There are celebrities who look stunning while still being “appropriate”, theres no reason for Waity to be so boring when designers all over the world would kill to dress her. I hope the “smoking while pregnant” lady is hanging her head in shame:(

  71. Cirque28 says:

    Re: smoking while pregnant.

I read Cheyenne’s comment as, “I was an underweight smoker who became pregnant, therefore Kate certainly may conceive,” rather than, “They made me stub my cigarette out in the delivery room after 9 glorious months of puffing away.”

Not that I condone smoking or smoking while pregnant AT ALL. But let’s not forget: pregnant women are more than merely incubators!

    Changing topics…

@Snappyfish: Thank you for explaining so much about Alexander McQueen! I didn’t even know that clothes looking as good in motion as they do standing still is the mark of true design. It makes sense, though.) What a very interesting read.

  72. Dani says:

Kate looks great–at this weight and at her previous weight. She has always had an athletic figure. As for the dress, it looks good. It’s not my favorite–the purple one is–but she looks good. I enjoyed seeing her in jeans. It has been a while.

  73. embertine says:

LOL Daily Fail , I wouldn’t take the as an indication of the trend of British thought. And yes, I have only seen that speculation on American gossip sites. Anecdote does not equal data however, I know.

Ashley, if Americans don’t care about the Royals then why are so many of you speculating on her childbearing capacity here? I’m English and I know absolutely no-one who cares whether they have kids or not. I think most people here just want them to be happy, whatever they decide.

  74. Jade says:

I have finally annoys me about this hoe – bad shoes!!! They always look like budget Target styles, come somebody get her some dang Louboutins?
Back in the day didn’t Dior do a ‘Diana’ bag? Seriously, this needs to change as a matter of priority.

  75. really says:

She just has a long torso, which makes her look like she has no hips. The outfit is so blah………zzzzzzzz. Other than that, she needs to pop babies; because she is no Diana and starting to get on my nerves.

  76. Cristina says:

LOVE the dress! Royal appropriate, yet girly and playful. Really nice.

  77. eternalcanadian says:

Again no arse or breasts. Gain just 10 pounds Catherine and stop with the smoking!

And holy toledo could William be any more balder than he is in that picture where he’s hugging Catherine? There definitely is no Rogaine or hair plugs at work!

  78. Very great post. I just stumbled upon your weblog and wanted to mention that I have truly loved surfing around your weblog posts. After all I will be subscribing to your feed and I hope you write again soon!
