Although Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides didn’t fare quite as well as hoped at the U.S. box office, the movie has performed extraordinarily well overseas; in fact, it passed the global $1 billion mark over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. So it comes as no surprise to learn that Disney wants to do more Pirates movies and, in fact, has planned to do so all along, for the studio already set up the end of On Stranger Tides with a teaser (involving Penelope Cruz and a doll, but to say more would be a spoiler) that would naturally lead into the fifth movie.
Now, the Wrap reports that the indispensible Johnny Depp is almost ready to sign on and head towards the dentist to install more pirate teeth for the next installment:
Johnny Depp is close to signing a deal to star in a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, an individual close to the negotiations told TheWrap.
In May, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he was working on a fifth Pirates script — and that he wouldn’t make the movie without Depp.
“Hopefully, if this one does well, (Depp) will want to come back and play the character again,” Bruckheimer told the L.A. Times. “But it’s going to depend on the screenplay. It always does. He’s maniacal about not wanting to disappoint his audience.”
“This one” is the fourth installment in the franchise, On Stranger Tides. And it did do well: This past weekend, it surpassed $1 billion at the global box office.
Apparently, Depp likes what he sees. He’s negotiating for the movie.
Update: Another individual close to the franchise said that a rough draft for the script was in, and that producer Bruckheimer and others were meeting intensively – three and four times a week – on improving it. A deal will depend on whether Depp likes the script, but this individual said the broad strokes were in place for a deal with the lead actor.
Depp’s agent Tracey Jacobs declined to comment. A Disney spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.
Depp stars as the kohl-eyed, swashbuckling pirate, Capt. Jack Sparrow, in Disney’s wildly successful franchise. The first four installments have grossed a total of $3.7 billion.
Depp is key to the franchise’s success: Without Capt. Jack there’s no Pirates.

So why exactly, other than for the sheer love of it, would Depp choose to reprise the Jack Sparrow character yet again? Well, the money is certainly worth it — Pajiba reports that Depp has already pocketed $350 million for the first four movies in the franchise. Pajiba also points out that Depp has deserved this sort of money all along for his better movies, so it’s pretty much okay that he gets it for these throwaway popcorn flicks, even if they’re not much more than Depp “putting on some Guyliner, delivering a bad English accent, and prancing around like a charming buffoon.” Part of me wants to think that Depp is also just “one of us” and is doing a good thing by keeping the thousands of people involved with the Pirates franchise in steady jobs, but I’m probably reading far too much into it. Still, more Pirates equals more Geoffrey Rush too, and who could possibly complain about that?

Shiver me timbers!!!
LOVE him in this role!! (Love him anyway, but I digress…)
He’s worth it.
I haven’t seen Pirates 4. Not sure if I will (in the theaters, I mean).
Haven’t seen X-Men first class either.
If I was JD I would make these movies as long as they paid me obscene amounts of money. I believe the last film alone he has already made 60-70 million bucks.
*swooon*
Oh I’d see his booty again as Cpt. Jack Sparrow!
he looks positively unhinged in PIRATES and i love it!lol
Ok, I actually went to see Pirates 4 in theaters. It wasn’t *amazing* but it was the perfect get-away-from-it-all summer movie (for me, at least).
And the bit with the mermaids was pure magic. More of that! Whoever wrote that scene, directed it, and/or composed the score should be in charge of the next movie. Srsly.
So I don’t begrudge him for making these movies. They are inoffensive, fun, lighthearted, and pretty damn entertaining.
I miss @JohnnyDepp’sGirl.
@ Rita-Me too where is she?
I enjoyed #4, a fun summer movie. Considering he basically is the whole franchise, I can’t argue with him making that much off of it either.
Bring back Norrington!! Jack Davenport for HGF please!!
I am a huge Johnny Depp fan, but really these are the worst movies ever!!!!! Please for the love of God stop making them. Please I beg of you, please.
Love Johnny, don’t really care if he is a dirty looking pirate or a bad ass mobster. It is a fun movie for the family.
Well, he makes them the money, he should get his cut. And I think he has tons of fun doing this shit, so why wouldn’t he come back?
Depp is “maniacal about not wanting to disappoint his audience”? Did he SEE Pirates 2? I rented it for a DOLLAR (after having loved the first one), and as soon as it was over, I said to myself, “Well, that’s a dollar and two hours of my life I’ll never get back.”
I do love him in so much of what he does; I just wish he would say Sayonnara to Jack Sparrow and make some good movies again.
I just have one request…can you include a nude scene in the new movie?
I love him. I will always love him. He is… *pauses to gather her composure* drop-dead-whoops-got-to-change-me-panties-swoony-drooling-on-the-floor-and-need-a-tissue-dark-eyed-male-temptress-the-cats-are-looking-at-me-funny-mumbling-into-your-pillow-as-you-dream-about-you-and-Johnny-on-a-midnight-cruise GORGEOUS.
I also respect him for moving away from Hollywood. And who knew, he’s managed to maintain a global box office appeal!
ETA: I agree that after the first Pirates movie, the others sucked. Still, I watch them because Johnny Depp is SIZZLING.
Holly molly. I was rolling my eyes at him doing another one, but now I get it. Go for it, Johnny.
No complaints here – they could continue to remake the first one just by shuffling actors around JD and I would be delighted…
Plus the aforementioned good reasons: he deserves the money, he’s helping a lot of nameless Hollywood types have good jobs, Geoffrey Rush, etc.
Bottom line, the man loves to dress up and play pirate. Who are we to judge?
@Jen – I DID miss Norington in #4! Happy to be rid of the other two chippies, but I second your request.
I think I have seen the first three (hubby forced me to watch) – I thought Depp was hysterical – the plots were awful and I simply could not wait for each of the movies to end. Hubby is looking forward to seeing #4 – I will pop in and out of the den to see parts (Johnny!) but will run away from the movie as much as possible. Hubby is really only about 12 years old when it comes to some movies – it is almost funnier to watch hubby watch the movie than to watch the movie! ha ha So to keep hubby happy, long live Captn Jack and whoever else is in them!
I’m a big movie snob, not a big Johnny Depp fan, and yet I think the Pirates movies are great adventure flick fare. They’re beautiful, fairly well plotted, not an insult to the intelligence, and vastly entertaining.
Geoffrey Rush has a great deal to do with the success of the series, too. He brings a different kind of witty gravitas to the proceedings in addition to Depp’s witty buffoonery. Rush has said he’ll sign up for any future movies, too.
The Judi Dench cameo was very funny. (spoiler) Johnny snogs Judi!
@jen Jack Davenport was so badly underutilized as Norrington in the first movie, the guy is quite a comic genius as anyone who has seen Coupling (the proper UK version) can attest to. Those rants of his were always exquisite.
I would so love to do johnny dressed as Captain Jack! Oh Yeah!
Seeing as how johnny is at that point in his career where he doesn’t give a sh!t, why not bank it in. SMOKE UP JOHNNY!
Does Depp ever practice the role of ‘philanthropy’? If not, he’s a greedy grub.
I’m in the minority here but I saw the last Pirate’s movie and it sucked. He used to make interesting acting choices and turn in great performances. He’s still a good actor no doubt but he’s sold out. He’s sold out at a very generous price but honestly, how much money do you need?
I’ve never bothered with any of them. Why would you?
Well mostly he comes across like he’s having an absolutely ball playing Sparrow, so I can see how when people say ‘aww come, make another one, we’ll pay you lots’ he goes ‘Okay then!’
it would be hard to turn that cash down, especially if you enjoyed doing it. he doesn’t owe anybody anything.
