J.K. Rowling’s Oscar de la Renta gown: tablecloth disaster or perfectly fine?

harry_potter_12_wenn3428299

Let me be straight with you: I really, really like J.K. Rowling. I don’t read the Harry Potter books or anything, but I like J.K. (or “Jo” as most people call her) in interviews, and I appreciate her so much. It’s great that there is an modern artist who cares – deeply – about the quality of what she puts her name on. I love her as a person. What I don’t love? This dress that Jo chose for the final London premiere of the Harry Potter films. It’s Oscar de la Renta, like Emma Watson’s dress (which we covered yesterday). What the hell is happening with the House of de la Renta? This looks like a cheap, plastic, K-Mart tablecloth. I think I have this tablecloth. Jo’s face looks beautiful, though. Great makeup, she’s not messing with her face, and she’s aging beautifully. I like her blonde too – it’s not too light, and it’s just perfect for her.

More photos of the kids – Emma’s de la Renta came with a great white jacket! I like the dress so much more with the jacket. And while Daniel Radcliffe may be sober, he looks kind of crackhead-ish here. Like he’s a junkie looking for a fix.

More fug fashions… Peaches Geldof and her new boyfriend. Speaking of crackheads, I guess. Peaches has lost weight, bleached the hell out of her hair, and she looks totally strung out. Her (wrinkled) dress is Dolce & Gabbana.

And here’s Guy Ritchie with his baby-mama Jacqui Ainsely. Life & Style claims she’s pregnant with a boy. Remember how I can never figure out who she reminds me of? In this photo, I think she looks like Lauren Conrad. Weird, right? Oh, and the dress is fug – I would have liked it if it was all yellow and white, all over. But the mish-mash of patterns is meh.

I think JK’s dress looks like my granny’s comforter actually. The material has a weird thickness to it. Awful.

  2. Cherry Rose says:

J.K. Rowling looks pretty good for her age.

As for the dress, it looks like it was fashioned out of my old comforter. The style of the dress isn’t that great either.

  3. You don't say says:

I don’t like dresses in 3D, but her speech at the opening was a tear jerker, so she is forgiven.

  4. Cherry says:

I DO like J.K.’s dress. It’s original and fairytale-like and I guess that’s appropriate, at a Harry Potter premiere. The color is also flattering on her. I like that it feels like something she (JK) picked out, it doesn’t feel styled in the sense that someone told her: here, this is what you’re going to wear.

Meanwhile, Emma Watson looks totally funky. I love that jacket on the princess dress. Didn’t Carrie Bradshaw wear that dress in one of the last SATC episodes, when she’s in a Paris hotelroom waiting for her Russian lover to show up?

  5. Lara says:

In other pics I’ve seen of the premier – hello Neville Longbottom! Whoa he looks seriously hot and yes I do feel dirty saying that.

  6. ELA says:

J.k.’s dress is like a pair of curtains – hate the colour and material – yuk. she looks nice though. love love love Emma’s dress and the jacket (i want it). her dress for the after party is fab as well

  7. Minx2 says:

he he.. I laughed when I saw the dress but she looks NICE and she’s having fun with it.. and why the heck not?
Emma’s dress with the jacket is fierce. Great cut too.

  8. Kaboom says:

I think the proper British term for J.K.’s dress is “tea cozy” … the thing you put over your tea pot so it will keep hot.

  9. Cherry says:

By the way, speaking of tabletcloths… I think Jacqui Ainsely IS actually wearing one. I swear to God, my mom has the exact same one.

  10. mimi says:

Jacqui Ainsley looks like Minka Kelly!

  11. saintdevil says:

Not messing with her face?! HAHAHAHA

Just google “JK Rowling plastic surgery”…

  12. kiko says:

@cherry no SJP wore Versace and it was pure perfection compared to the Oscar de la Renta

  13. Sue says:

Why do pregnant women insist on holding their stomachs for picture?

  14. Sisi says:

I like the colors on Jo, they complement her really nicely.

And like others have said: I want Emma’s Jacket!

Did anyone hear Daniels speech? He’s a great public speaker, really liked it.

  15. S says:

Emma looks approximtely 239048203948 times better with the jacket. I KNEW she needed some sort of sleeve-age!!
As for JK, well the colours flatter her, her hair is great, and I adore her and I’m biased so what who cares if it looks like it’s been made out of an eiderdown with the doona still inside of it.
Peaches Geldof sickens me. I read on the daily mail (so reliable, I know) that she was probably partly to blame for the overdose and death of a teenage boy. I can’t remember the deets exactly but the whole thing has turned me entirely off her – not that I EVER liked her to begin with, but there you have it. Ugh.
Also, Daniel always looks like he’s huntin’ for his next fix (although he’s obviously not). I just think it’s the pale skin and the eternally Bad Hair (really, he should NEVER have cut it for the fifth film…the fourth film was unofficially the greatest moment for his hair EVER, so long and luscious), but that doesn’t mean I love him any less. He & Rupert are both little dreamboats. So perfectly imperfect and LOVELY.
Oh, and Peaches’ boyfriend looks like an undertaker. Nice spats, bro…

  16. Cherry says:

    @Kiko ah you’re right, cheers!

  17. ladybert62 says:

My oh my – hate all the dresses except possibly the blue one but couldnt see the whole thing. Didnt realize that Daniel – whatever his name is – Potter was so short.

  18. Nanea says:

Tea cozy, bedspread, whatever – nice color scheme for Jo, but carnations???

I would have liked Peaches’ D&G dress, had it come without the wrinkles.

  19. kb says:

@saintdevil — I was going to say the same thing. She had MAJOR plastic surgery a few years back.

  20. Emma says:

    @saintdevil My thoughts exactly!

  21. MourningTheDeathofMusic says:

“…looks pretty good for her age.”

I deeply loathe when people say that. Her age has nothing to do with if she looks lovely or not. It’s an ignorant statement to make.

As for JK’s dress. I don’t care for it at all. I could forgive the pattern/color just a wee bit if it weren’t for the unflattering cut for the skirt. It gives the illusion of being bigger/heavier than what she is.

    The dress is very unflattering.

  22. olcranky says:

oh no JK, that pattern is fine in smaller doses (as in the top of the gown or the skirt part only) but not for a full gown.

  23. Cheyenne says:

Thank God Ron finally got a haircut. He really needs to lose those ridiculous bangs, though.

  24. Stubbylove says:

JK’s dress doesn’t do it for me – that pattern belongs on a table – not a dress – although she looks gorgeous. Why can’t Emma smile properly? She looks like she’s holding back a huge fart in that 3rd pic.

  25. Lou says:

I like JK’s dress despite the weird heaviness at the bottom – the colour is pretty and fresh and the fabric flowers are fun.

    Daniel’s hair is awful.

  26. Turquoise Blue says:

I think Rowling looks great! I like the dress, and her hair and earrings look beautiful.

  27. Twez says:

Rowling’s dress looks like a sofa slipcover from the eighties, which is the last time I recall seeing that damned cabbage rose print. God help me. I’ve gotten old enough to see fashion trends I wore as a teenager come round again.

  28. Joan says:

I love J.K.’s dress! The colours are perfect and the flowers are a lovely touch. Yes, that pattern could be used for drapes but it does not look bad at all. She definitely has the body to pull-it-off. I rarely comment about fashion but that dress is really fresh for the season and upbeat. Well done.

  29. REALIST says:

Isn’t JK richer than the Queen now?

  30. Isa says:

I don’t care for the dress but I adore J.K. for giving me Harry Potter. I started reading them in the 6th grade and they just got better over time. I need to re-read them all.

  31. video_slacker says:

It took me a few minutes to think of her name, but Jacqui Ainsely reminds me quite a bit of Jennifer Esposito.

    http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2616498944/nm0261170

  32. Ron says:

She wore a mint colored taffeta dress with rosettes slapped on it. Does anything sound good about that?

  33. almond says:

    J. K.’s dress is not… good. But the colour does flatter her and she looks amazing.
Emma’s dress is ten times improved with that jacket (so want!), but she’s starting to develop a bit of an attitude, I think. She looks part smug, part bothered to be there. I dunno, something seems off with her whole demeanor.
Daniel does look a bit out of it, but in a funny way.

  34. Victoria says:

I can’t believe that dress is an Oscar. What was he thinking when he OKed? Is this a previous to what to expect from the company when he retires?

  35. Olga says:

I kind of like it. It’s really fun 🙂 and looks like so in place here.

  36. Cissy says:

Jo, I think it is time you took a long hard look in a full length mirror whilst wearing your glasses and are completely sober, to see what a fashion disaster this gown is.

Perhaps she has the Mirror of Erised at home and she saw herself dressed as Emma Watson (read HP Book 1)

    Horrible gown – great makeup.

  37. That is great blog because first time I am not watching before that dresses that are wearing in the oscar.
