From far away, like just seeing the thumbnail photos, I really like this outfit on Carey Mulligan. Assuming the strange panels missing on the top are filled with white fabric, this looks like that dumb bright color block trend done right. Nothing is clashing, nothing is flashing (again ignoring the top) and those red pumps are adorable. The canary yellow asymmetric stripe is just the right amount of bright color to pop against her long, flattering cobalt blue skirt. It’s striking and not jarring like so many of these outfits lately.
There’s the problem, though, of the cut out parts on the top. It’s as if Carey can’t just wear a long skirt and top without showing some skin. I can’t fault her too much for it as she has a conservative dress style normally. She’s not a biscuit flasher and she usually looks somewhat fashion-forward without being a fashion victim. She takes calculated risks, which was probably what she thought she was doing here. It’s not really working, but at least her whole midriff isn’t showing.
I wrote all that up based on those photos at the top where she’s wearing the gorgeous red pumps with a red bangle, and then I saw another set of photos where she switched them for tan studded sandal flats. These are even worse with that outfit. Still, she’s lovely and this isn’t fug as much as just bizarre. She almost got it right.
Carey is promoting Drive, in which she co-stars with Ryan Gosling. (Swoon!) On the panel at Comic-Con, she joked “My job in this film was to fall in love with Ryan Gosling—rough.” She also explained how Gosling got into character for his role as a stunt driver by learning “everything there was to know about cars. He built his own car for the film…and [he learned] stunt driving! He was a machine. Everyone loved him, he was a dream, he was amazing.” We would expect nothing less.
E! has a really good story from the director about how he wooed Gosling for the film. Here are links to two clips of Drive on YouTube. It has a very realistic, gritty feel. It also features Bryan Cranston and Christina Hendricks, and is out in the U.S. on September 17.
I love the outfit with the heels, but only with the heels. The payless sandals make the look horrible. But I can’t blame a girl for not wanting to wear the heels once the photo-ops are done either! She’s so adorable and talented, I think she’s the best actress her age who is the least up her own ass.
She’s too creepy skinny to be showing skin like that..not a good look at all.
Oh, she’s another one that’s always adorable. She could wear plastic frog legs and still look cute.
She has beautiful hands. Cute.
Horrible outfit all the way around.
SHE is cute.
the dress is “what was she thinking”.
but I do LOVE the red shoes.
I think Carey’s adorable. She reminds me of a young Judi Dench.
When you’re young, smart and pretty just about anything looks good.
ITA with #1. Lola. She’s super cute, but she really needs to wear heels with that dress. If not, she looks like a leprechaun.
Admittedly, the whole thing would have been better without those weird cutouts. But then, kudos for wearing an overall rather demure dress and still look cool and youthful.
I actually think this outfit is very original and unique. I love it and she’s one of the few young actresses who doesn’t bug the shit out of me for whatever reason. (lookin at you Emma Watson)
I appreciate the effort, but the outfit is a horrible mess.
I love everything about Carey, not only is she one of the most talented actresses working today (I was lucky to see her in NYC in her play “Through a Glass Darkly” and she was BRILLIANT) her style is fantastic she is never boring she takes risks, in that sense she reminds me of Cate Blanchet never boring always witty with her fashion choices.
don’t like the dress but she is cute as a button.
I’m guessing this is her first visit to Comic-Con. She showed up in heels, but then saw how everyone, including actors, are pretty low key and casually dressed, so she slipped on the sandals to dress down a bit.
I don’t know, maybe someday she will reach Blanchett levels of truly being able to pull off anything, but right now, I think it just looks weird.
She is cute and unique though.
Red shoes and white shoes always look horrible to me – rednecky. I am thinking she changed shoes because look at her poor bunions. She has enlarged toe joints.
Very cute, as long as she keeps those ugly feet covered.
She’s a cute girl, but the length on that skirt is just… ugh.
Cute, even though I’m not into skinny girls.
See “An Education”…she’s great in it.
I really like that outfit.
