Angelina Jolie: “I’ve never not been grateful to be an actor”

wenn34502171

Yesterday, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt made an appearance at the Sarajevo Film Festival, and we don’t have access to any of the photos! Boo. You can see some here and here, though. Angelina wore an oddly bright Elie Saab gown and Brad looked nice. Angelina was there because she was awarded the “Honorary Heart of Sarajevo” Award for directing a film about the war, The Land of Blood and Honey, which will be out later this year. When Angelina’s leading lady, Zana Marjanovic, presented Angelina with the award, Angelina received wild, non-stop applause, and an insider says Angelina was nearly moved to tears. Angelina told reporters, “I love this country. I was honored to have a chance to meet everybody. This movie was a chance to bring attention to the situation that happened so long ago, and I hope that it brings attention and more dialogue to remind people what everybody here went through.” Damn, I wish we had ANY photos from this film festival – Michael Fassbender was there a few days ago with a newly shaved head too. BOO on our photo agencies for not buying these photos.

Anyway, Angelina has a new interview in The Financial Times this weekend. You can only read the whole thing by subscription, which I’m not going to do, but various outlets had excerpts from the piece:

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have maintained a nomadic lifestyle with their six children over the years, but the kids have strong connections to their own cultures, Jolie reveals in a new interview. The actress, 36, who adopted three of her children – Maddox, 9, from Cambodia; Pax, 7, from Vietnam; and Zahara, 6, from Ethiopia – and gave birth to Shiloh, 5, in Namibia, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 3, in France, makes sure her kids know where they came from.

“They are all learning about each other’s cultures as well as being proud of their own,” she tells the Financial Times. “So it’s not like just the boys get to do the Asian thing. They all have their flags over their beds and their individual pride.”

Of course, keeping up with their international visits is a challenge. “We owe Vietnam a visit, because Pax is due,” she says. “Z wants to get back to Africa, and Shiloh too. So everyone takes their turns in their country.”

Jolie also opened up about becoming a mom of six has changed her relationship with work.

“I’ve never not been grateful to be an actor,” she says. “But I think when I was younger I needed [acting] more. I was trying to question things in life so you find these characters that help you find things and grow.”

“It’s like being in therapy, in a way. You’re drawn to certain roles because they question something about life, or about love, or about freedom. You ask these questions as you grow up: am I strong enough, am I sane enough? Do I understand love, do I understand myself?” Now, she adds, “I’m older and I know who I am … and I’m less interested in the character helping me answer something … than in being able to answer it for myself, as a woman, as an adult, with my family.”

Talking about Salt, Jolie explains: “I’d just had the twins,” she recalls. “I’d been in a nightgown for a very, very long time. And I was sitting in the hospital breastfeeding and reading this script in my nightgown, feeling so soft and mama … and I was flipping these pages and it was all fighting and shooting guns. I thought, ‘That’s what I need. I need to get out of my nightgown and I need a gun.’ I’m sure many a woman who has been through childbirth has thought ‘It would be nice to get a little physical, get a little wild … to remember what that other side is like.’ ”

Jolie and her longtime love Brad Pitt have six children together — Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, Zahara, 6, Shiloh, 5, and 3-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne — and the family is famous for their nomadic lifestyle. “Home is wherever we are,” she says. But does she ever feel rootless? “Yes, but happily. I’m very bad at staying in one place. I’m also bad at sitting still… There’s so much to explore in the world… So I love travel. If you can travel I think it’s the best way to raise kids.”

Her directorial debut — In the Land of Blood and Honey — is a love story she also wrote, which is set in the Bosnian war. “I prefer [being behind the camera] to acting,” she admits. “I think I’ve learnt something from all of [the directors I’ve worked with] — even the ones I didn’t like… I also learned a lot from Clint Eastwood about how to appreciate the members of the crew, empowering them to do their job.”

But Jolie doesn’t plan to stay in the business forever. “As Brad and I get older we’re going to do fewer films. I’ve been working for a long time, he’s been working for a long time,” she says. “We’ve had a nice run and I don’t want to be doing this our whole lives. There are a lot of other things to do.”

She has been to Cambodia this year, to shoot an advertising campaign for Louis Vuitton with Annie Leibovitz. An impoverished country might seem like an odd place for a luxury fashion house to shoot an ad campaign but the final decision was made by Jolie herself. “To actually do it there, to highlight the beauty of the country, was something I was very happy to do because it is a place people should travel to,” she says. Indeed, she and Pitt have a house there—”it’s a little place on stilts”. Her fee from the campaign will go towards charitable projects in the country, she says, building on work she began with a foundation the family established in Maddox’s name. “It’s focused on protecting mountains from deforestation, poaching and clearing landmines. We put it together for Mad so when he’s older he’ll hopefully take it over.”

China is on her list of places still to explore, and she would love to see Burma, “but not in the wrong circumstances”, given that the country is under the control of an oppressive military junta. “And Iran. I’d love to go [to] Iran.” Her dream, however, is to “cross the Sahara. It takes 28 days … it would have to be on a camel. I wonder if I could do it in pieces and station the kids along the way,” she muses.

[From The Financial Times, via Us Weekly & People Mag]

I understand that Angelina’s top priority is being a mom, and good for her. But I’m getting so friggin’ tired of hearing her talk about how she’s going to be cutting back or phasing out working and all of that. She’s been saying it for years, and she needs to find a new topic of conversation for all of the interviews she does year after year to promote all of films she does year after year. I don’t begrudge her working, nor do I begrudge her the time she spends with her family. But I just get tired of her ringing the same “I’m taking time off, I’m spending more time with my family” bell when she works about the same as always.

UPDATE: Ah, Slate has the full Financial Times article here. It’s a pretty good piece. The best part is her response when she’s asked about The News of the World, the tabloid which she and Brad sued after they reported that she and Brad were breaking up. “I did hear something about that … clearly I never read it. So it’s hard to know how much of a loss it is.” Diplomatic.

  1. EbonyShiksa says:

To me, her saying that she’s taking time off to be with her family is akin to Jennifer Aniston saying that she wants kids. In other words, I’ll believe it when I see it.

They both say it to please their demographics.

And please, don’t even start with the Minivan Majority ish. AJ had two People Mag covers to show off her kids. Who do you think she was pandering to? The Motorcycle Minority?*

*Please excuse my lack of wit, it’s early on the West Coast 🙁

  2. Kaiser says:

Ebony – That’s a really great point! I agree, both are the “talking points” that Jolie & Aniston feel like they have to say in interviews.

  3. mln76 says:

I just have to gush like the Brangeloonie that I am-she got not only applause but a standing ovation. Brad looked so genuinely proud. So different from the usual sulky star S.O. who grinds his teeth and silks when his woman gets attention.

  4. Laughternrain says:

Ohhhh God… Plenty of fodder for the haters to twist and snark at. Am so not looking forward to this…..

  5. N.D. says:

Well, it’s been months since the last time she really worked, no? Like back in winter when she was doing voiceover for KFP and editing her movie at the same time. Kung Fu Panda promotion barely counts as work because she’d be in Cannes for Brad’s movie anyway and would take kids to see this movie sooner or later.

And there are no upcoming projects for her in near future. So she’ll end up having a year off at the very least. I think that qualifies for “working less”.

I’m a bit surprised her movie isn’t finished by now and wasn’t shown there.

  6. Nikki says:

The problem isn’t the answers she gives. She’s consistent. The problem is she’s asked the same exact questions over & over. So she gives the same answers over & over.

  7. lann says:

She seems to be very intelligent and Diplomatic. I don’t see quotes of her speaking ill of other stars. I like that about her. She has the forum to bash other stars but she don’t.
You can see that she has matured over the years and now in a happy place in her life. Their kids are beautiful, adorable and very happy. She is doing a great job with her family.

  8. Rita says:

Disappointed in her where she states that she discovered so much about life and herself through acting. That sounds like its right out of the Actor’s Guild PR Handbook, as if to lend meaning and humanitarian achievement to the profession. A more self-serving and insecure profession I can’t think of. Like to see her direct Mel Gibson.

  9. Rena says:

She really does not work much as an actor these days. She has not had a film in theatres this year other than KFP2 as a voice actor. She makes like one film a year when other actors have 2+ more films out each year, especially female actors as they approach their 40’s. All she has done this year is edit her film she directed last year, that’s it. Most of this year she has been on various humanitarian missions and that is what she has spoken on. She is one of the most articulate and eloquent actors today.

I have to echo mln76 re the SFF, she looked beautiful and Brad looked his proudest ever of her. They both support each other in every way. Nice to see in this age of gloomy news headlines.

  10. Laki says:

Angie was beautiful in Sarajevo.I saw her,she is absolutely breathtaking.Brad looked tired on the other hand the filming of World War Z got to him I guess.

But I also saw someone else, you know who?
    You know WHO?
I saw the Fassdong on the premiere of Jane Eyre.
If I were immature I would tell you TO SUCK IT KAISER!!!
    But I am not.
He was so hot in his black suit and shaved head.Posing for pictures, making a lovely speach strutting his dongness everywhere.
Cory Fukunaga was also there and in his speach said “Who would leave this guy?”.Needless to say female squealing, including mine, ensued.
Ah I am so glad I am in my hometown now.

  11. Sue says:

Kaiser@ I get what your saying but didn’t she cut back she not filming any movie this year and the only project she has confermd lind up is Cleopatra which should start filming next year so she did cut back.

  12. Rose says:

@kaiser, did Angie worked this year.? I don’t. Remember her acting in a movie this year. I know she was editing her movie. I also believe she is cutting back being an actor. Maybe she will direct more and continue her other interests, eg UN work.

  13. I Choose Me says:

“If you can travel I think it’s the best way to raise kids.”

Lots of people will disagree with this Miss Jolie. And yes I realize she says ‘I think’, meaning it’s her opinion but I can bet my last dollar that’s she gonna get a lot of flack for that one.

Oh and I agree with you Kaiser, I love her but she needs to stop talking about how she’s gonna cut back on acting and focus on other things and actually ya know, do eeeet! Take a couple of years off Angie. Let us miss you for awhile.

  14. louiset says:

I don’t understand why EbonyShiksa, Kaiser, etc keep saying Angelina consistantly works when she barely does. Since giving birth to the twins Angelina has done 3 movies: Salt, The Tourist, and directed a movie. She’s spent about 6 or 7 months on set. She hasn’t even done any movies this year and nothing on tap in the near future. Also people constantly bash her humanitarian work as nothing since she’s gone for 2-4 days for 4 or 5 trips a year. That’s just 1-3 weeks a year. So I don’t understand how people are saying she’s not cutting back.

  15. playamom says:

Shiloh is carrying Jet Ray from Ben 10

  16. N.D. says:

@Rita Just because there are lots of self-serving insecure individuals in this profession doesn’t mean no one can be in it and enjoy it for different reasons like an opportunity to learn about the world and yourself.

Actually I’ve heard quite a few other accomplished actors say the same – Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel just from the top of my head. Viggo even went as far as to say that’s his main motivator – how much new stuff he can learn from playing the role he’s offered.

  17. Zzzzzzzzz says:

She’s actually working less these days than we think but because she’s such a constant fixture in the entertainment world (tabloids, tv, blogs etc.) it doesn’t seem like it. Kung Fu Panda was her last official movie but does a few weeks of voiceover really count? After that, you have to go back to The Tourist for a movie she actually starred in and when was that shot? So yeah, she’s actually working less, certainly less than a lot of her contemporaries are.

  18. hyena says:

    @louiset

I think it’s because Angie has said she is going to take “years off” not months.

I’m interested in the News of the World thing. They sued them in the UK where the burden was on NOTW to prove it was true, not on Brangie to prove it wasn’t. With all of this phonetapping stuff it makes me wonder if it was true but NOTW couldn’t prove it without admitted they were up to illegal tapping.

  19. hyena says:

  20. Miss Marie says:

HELLO! Wakeup call. They are actors and actresses not unlike politicians-they don’t speak the truth – they tell say what the public wants to hear to stay in favorable opinion. None of us are familiar with the “REAL” Angie and Brad. Such gullible people we are in the world – I have fallen for it too.

  21. Tiffany says:

Yeah Kaiser I am going to agree with the majority, the woman has not been working as frequently so I believe what she says. @ Nikki, I am with you interviewers need a new set of questions as she always siad she was going to take different routes with her career. She can do whatever she wants……as long as Salt 2 is made for fans like me who loved it. Yeah, that ending was just reeking of SEQUEL.

  22. Cheyenne says:

    What Nikki said.

  23. hyena says:

Didn’t mean to post the comment twice and fyi I don’t even think that the brange broke up, just that notw correctly identified they went to lawyers and made a settlement plan in cas. eof.

  24. wwww says:

    Just go away, Angie !

  25. theaPie says:

And I was sitting in the hospital breastfeeding and reading this script in my nightgown, feeling so soft and mama … and I was flipping these pages and it was all fighting and shooting guns. I thought, ‘That’s what I need. I need to get out of my nightgown and I need a gun.’

Now that is a truly odd statement.

  26. mln76 says:

She doesn’t work a lot. And unlike Holmes and Garner she’s had offers for several high profile pics-Prometheus, The Silver Lining Playbook, and Gravity to name a few. And it’s rare in Hollywood to see parents so unwilling to be away from their kids while shooting.

  27. fancyamazon says:

I think the reason people are all tense about her saying that she will take time off of work is that she may cut back, but she is indeed always doing something. Taking a break would be a year or two hiatus, with maybe some of her UN work in there. Not doing a movie here and there, and ad campaigns, and editing of another project. And no one would make a big deal about it at all if she would just stop saying it. She has the money to take a major break away form the cameras and just live her life in peace, a la Johnny Depp. When that boy goes away, he GOES AWAY.

  28. Rose says:

@wwww, why don’t YOU go away. Find someone you like, and say something good about him/her. Stop wasting your time reading and posting about someone you don’t like. That makes no sence.

  29. anonymous says:

With all the attenton Angelina Jolie gets from the paps I would take the money and run too! The attention Jolie gets is really over the top, top that off with have to care for six kids, UN duties, acting and then Brad Pitt that’s a whole lot. Maybe she is doing it for the children as they are getting older. To have the constant intrusion of the paps in the lives of their children when they get older is a bad scenerio.

  30. Rose says:

@fancy amazon, I hear what you are saying, but Angie said she does like to keep busy. It’s her life and she will do what makes her happy. You would not like someone to tell you when to stop working and live your life like Johnny Depp. It does not matter how much money she has, she is only 36 yo. I believe she is very happy with how her life is now or she would make a change.let’s not judge or we will be judged.

  31. bluhare says:

What I really like about this site is reading of all the places posters are from. And the command of English is incredible; I usually don’t realize English isn’t your first language until you tell us.

So kudos to all the non-English speaking posters(like you, Laki!). You’re great!

  32. Ta says:

But it’s what’s going on … She is been working as an actress far less In These last years … doing other work director, her work with the UN, Anthony Holpinks hevealed That he is in talks with Angelina Jolie about playing Winston Churchill in the film she’s Developing …. She is so young and has done so many things, has gone through so much … If we compare with other actresses in HW, which make 2-3 films a year ….. And for me Angelina Jolie is committed to living her life.

  33. Rita says:

    @theapie
That’s exactly what I thought when I read it. Seemed a little forced and over the top.

    @ND #16

I hear what you’re saying. We all learn from our professional experiences but I think it’s like reading books. One’s perspective is broadened through literature but maturation evolves more from life’s experiences than the imagination.

For example, imagine two people pretending to be secret agents who are assigned to kill each other but instead fall in love, adopt a bunch of children, travel the world doing charity work, and invest their time and money trying to rebuild neighborhoods in some southern city after a catastrophic flood. I mean really!!!! That would never happen.

  34. Lucky Charm says:

Congratulations! You can tell this means a lot to her. And she is so lucky to have such a supportive partner by her side. As far as her cutting back on her workload, she has already started doing just that. I think people confuse seeing pictures of her everywhere as her working, I guess they expect her to go into hiding for 12 months. Brad has been working a lot lately, and she has been home with the kids, taking them out sightseeing & having fun.

I completely agree with her about traveling being the best way to raise kids. I take that to mean that in order to give kids a full education, it’s important to expose your children to different cultures & not keep them sheltered in one tiny little part of the world. And to everyone saying that literally traveling around with your kids is poor parenting, I’m sure that all the military families would completely disagree with you. Of course most of the complainers probably haven’t even traveled out of their own state, thus proving my point about education.

  35. Mary says:

She said she will work less as an actress, and do other things … and that is what has been happening, she directed a film, will produce Winston Churchill, UNHCR, traveling the world, family … etc. ..
And as some have claimed, compared to other actresses she works less.

  36. Anonymous says:

    You forgot the eyeroll.

‘Her dream, however, is to “cross the Sahara. It takes 28 days … it would have to be on a camel. I wonder if I could do it in pieces and station the kids along the way,” she muses.’

No doubt she’d station the paps, too.

Oh, Angie. We get it. You are so very cool. You have tattoos. You shun marriage. You don’t feel guilt or regret like other people. You shun social norms. We get it already.

  37. lisa says:

She talked about going across the Sahara over 3 years ago when promoting Changeling. I recall the interview with Clint. They were both asked about what was on their “bucket list” the Sahara comment was her reply to the question.

She obviously does not shun marriage. She has done it twice. Has had tats way before she was known.

I have always liked her honesty. She is who she is and not apologetic for it either.

Good for her. She and Brad have a beautiful family. Nothing wrong with that.

  38. Mia says:

She works less than many actresses and gets more shit talked about her than many other actresses. She can’t win with some people.

If she wants to take her kids on a magic carpet ride, she can because those are her children. Her kids seem well-adjusted, happy, and loved. Don’t see why that’s chaffing people’s butts, but that’s life. I don’t like how my cousins raise their kids. Doesn’t stop them from ignoring me and going on about their business.

  39. Anonymous says:

She may work less – I don’t know – but she sure as hell does more PR than most actresses and I don’t know any other actress that throws her kids into the public eye like she does.

Now why do you think that is?

Could it be – gasp! – that she is selling us something?

  40. Laughternrain says:

Anonymous, no one could ever do as much PR as Jennifer Aniston. And Angelina never throws her kids into the public eye.

s, sorry, she never was a homewrecker. Get it straight.

Edit; doesn’t it seem straight that people like someone, Canuck, Shay et al disappear and all of a sudden these new ones appear? Never mind the guy who ‘pretended’ to not be on either side by chose Aniston’s because of our supposed ‘attacks’ on Aniston…. Neutral til then? Yeah right, thats an old trick.

  41. Rena says:

Laughternrain, I like how you think and then express those thoughts. Keep it up.

Angelina will never ever not be roasted raw by a select few who refuse to accept reality and truth. Their pinprick sized heads are forever stuck in land of tab fantasy. They want for some reason to believe the worst of her no matter what, she must really represent some kind of invisible threat to them.

Angelina has a family she clearly treasures and has made her priority, she puts them first. She works much less than many other actors, averaging 1 film or zero a year. She also is a talented woman who like other talented women uses her brain in her chosen career field and in humanitarian endeavors. MOST IMPORTANTLY SHE IS NEVER EVER CRITICAL OF ANYONE.

Now how anyone could find fault with her just living her life is beyond rational comprehension. Because that is all she does.

  42. Laughternrain says:

Ugh, I meant doesn’t it seem strange, not doesn’t it seem straight.

    Thanks Rena. 🙂

  43. e.non says:

of course her movie experiences influenced her in ways she never could have expected. the travel to africa and cambodia alone would have certainly opened her eyes to a level of poverty unimagineable in this country — (although with the current president intent on dismantling the social safety net to benefit his overlords, we will be seeing the modern day shanty towns in this country … but i digress)

props to her for originally taking the time to get educated and turning that into benefitting the unhcr and bringing attention to those who desperately need it.

  44. ZenB!tch says:

So when is she going to stop working? She is always saying she is going to stop and yet she is in at least 2 films a year. Why not admit she doesn’t want to be a stay at home mom. There is nothing wrong with that she has enough money to afford the help but I guess that goes against the image she wants to portray as the holy mother.

  45. ZenB!tch says:

Um.., Brad DID NOT look nice, he looks dirty and unkempt.

Angelina looks nice. I don’t think her dress is too bright at all

  46. Dea says:

Where she has been and where she is, is only to be applaud. She does so much for humanity that other celebrities or rich people just speak beautiful words and never do real things. She is a special human being and I wished we had more like her. Whoever hates her because she “stole” Brad should rethink their position. No woman steals a man if he does not want to. Period. Jen was focused so much in her body and career that she did not want to have a child at the time that Brad wanted. That fact alone made a strong reason for Jen and Brad to not be together anymore. And all Jen’s interviews for God’s sake are how she does yoga, pilates and drinks a lot of water. The very last interview was “I just want to travel, travel a lot”. That will be my focus for this year. Since that interview there has not been any travel at all to begin with because she just met her prince and does not have time to focus on her biggest desire at the beginning of the year. In other words, Jen is not a strong character of a woman. She really is in a middle life crisis.

  47. Laughternrain says:

ZenB!tch, actually Angelina only does around 1 movie every 2 years. She hasn’t done any this year. But of course this fact doesn’t suit your agenda…

    ‘s’,
My nic laughter n (and) rain is from a Neil Sedaka song “I hear laughter in the rain” . What does your ‘s’ stand for ignorant hater? Stupid?

  48. N.D. says:

I have to say, this interview seems to be new only in parts – like NOTW one. Much of the rest is compilation from old interviews. Sahara quote, Salt nightgown quote etc. Working less quote could be old too.

Though honestly if she will work even less than she does now that would be full on retirement not “working less”.

@Rita I didn’t get you point with this MAMS story. Imagination?

She went to Cambodgia to film a stupid movie but ended up working for UN and mother of Maddox. I think she can say that her job lead her to learning thing or two about life and growing as a person in the process.

Honestly, if there is a will there will be a way. If person wants to learn and grow it doesn’t matter what profession they are in, they will find the way. But being an actor, especially regularly working actor, gives you tons of opportunities to travel, to meat interesting people, to do research about intersting things, pick up some cool skills, use filming as drama therapy sessions and so on and on. She doesn’t say anything that isn’t true.

  49. Anonymous says:

She does indeed put her children in the public eye. Most celebrities protect their children from the paps.

I don’t ever recall seeing Meryl Streep’s children when they were young paraded next to their mother in front of the paps. Meryl never needed to do anything that. Cate Blanchette? No again. She has 3 sons and who has ever seen them? Frances McDormand adopted a son from Paraguay and lives in NYC – well within the reach of the paps. . Most people don’t even know she adopted from a foreign country. Why? Bbecause she is a serious actress and doesn’t need to sell herself with information like that.

Face it, Anj is a celeb, her Oscar was a fluke, and she is no serious actress. She is a PR hound extraordinaire and she uses her kids and her live in boyfriend to create an image that she sells to gullible people like you folks. And then she laughs all the way to the bank.

  50. Tomas says:

Blah, blah, blah….this woman has about as much appeal as the dust bunnies under my nana’s bed.

    p.s And Dea…get a freakin’ life, sister.

  51. Chris says:

Never not been grateful to be an actor?

I remember years ago she said something like “I have everything that’s supposed to make a person happy but I’m not happy” So based on that she hasn’t always been grateful to be an actor.

  52. Chloe says:

Kaiser, I don’t think that doing one film a year is actually working a lot, especially for an actress as popular as her. By now you probably know that I worship your snark but cut AJ some slack here.

Also, I realize that a dream to cross the Sahara might seem pretentious to some but she’s been talking about it for some time, so it’s not like she’s just made it up to have a talking point. Besides, it’s a dream. Dreams often seem silly, or whatnot.

Some women want to be pretty princesses and there are people who identify with that but I’d rather dream of crossing the Sahara. I actually hope one day, however stupid it sounds, to travel to Jordan and ride the beautiful horses there, and see Petra and the desert sky. I live in a cold country. I know it will probably never happen and I won’t mind being called pretentious. It’s just a dream.

(By now I guess it’s no secret that I prefer the Sahara talk to talking about pilates, cleansing and drinking a lot of water. But to each their own.)

  53. lisa says:

I saw a few of the videos of them on the Red Carpet. They seem so happy and so in-tuned with each other. It was lovely to see.

I like them a great deal. Hope they have a very long and happy life together.

I swear on the tab photo she looked just like Jen Garner. Weird.

I do kind of agree with her about the children traveling. Mine have gone to private school, public school and now being tutored while we tour. The cool thing is, while learning about WWII and the Holocaust, they were at Anne Frank’s house. Seeing Rembrant’s house and paintings. While studying Asia, they got to touch a real Ming Vase that was 4000 years old at the V&A. Seeing Leonardo DaVinci’s works, every amazing place in the world.
It’s opened their eyes to learn not everyone lives like we did. People live without cars, take subways, they get to see stuff like Stonehenge. It’s freaking cool and my kids 11 and 13 never want to go home:) Next Toronto and they’ll see Niagra Falls, I wished my family did that when I was a kid.

  55. Kara Ann says:

THank you, thank you article writer! I too am a little tired of the constant declarations that she is going to work less followed by more movies, more red carpets, and more promotions. I don’t care that she does these things but I do wish she would stop saying that she isn’t going to being doing them “as much”. As much as what? As you do? Okay, just let me know when you retire otherwise I know that I’ll see how much you work!
Poster #1, I agree with you. Stop telling me what you want and are going to do and Just Do It!

  56. werty says:

    I wish i could travel too…
She looked great (better than usual actually)
And as others have pointed out she hasnt been working that much these last few years.

Never not been grateful to be an actor?
I remember years ago she said something like “I have everything that’s supposed to make a person happy but I’m not happy” So based on that she hasn’t always been grateful to be an actor.
    _______________________________
That qoute was about finding a purpose (sp?)
she said that when she was in love, financially stable and won an oscar she still didnt feel satisfied and when she traveled to Cambodia for TR a whole new world opened up and she got involved with the UN. She also said that she now had a purpose and was happy .
But if you look up other interviews she does say that she lucky to be able to make money by living/experiencing different lifestyles and people.
Sorry for the bad eng, its my 2 language
It was from the 20/20 interview with Barbara Walters.

And nope i still dont have a life…

  57. Anonymous. says:

@dea perhaps you should get your facts right before you speak out and say such dumb things.

Jen just came back from traveling not to long ago. And took her prince FYI.

Also you should use that logic of your’s to say the same on your team mates when they go on to other stories and say the same thing on jen as well.

If jp fan’s can’t even admit to Jolie being a homewrecker and that’s there only real defense “that she’s not one”

Than why would they call someone else one. Most of all when there are more facts to call Jolie one than there is on jen.

On a side note: jen has nothing to do with this whole thing! this story, Jolie pitt’s life at (all!) anymore, and hasn’t for such a long time. So why does she alway’s seem to come up.

Just jp fan’s alone always seem to bring her up seem’s to me that they just can’t seem to get enough of aniston.

So in conclusion get your facts right before you speak out, don’t say something about someone else when you don’t admit to the same thing yourself’s and please leave Jennifer and justin OUT of jp’s boring (has been) lives.

    Thank you. 😀

  58. How the interview came across to me,is that acting(her job)has given her the opportunity to find herself, grow as a person,to give her a foundation to last a lifetime.I’ve been blessed,to be able to make a living at what I love most.In fact what I do defines me.It is who I am.And to me,that was what Jolie was saying. And of course,I don’t make Jolies paycheck.BUMMER!(Werty**Hey Ya!!)

  59. Pity says:

““So it’s not like just the boys get to do the Asian thing.” What exactly is the Asian thing? Any guesses?

“They all have their flags over their beds and their individual pride.” So where do you think they hang these flags. They travel with them to the hotels and the help put them up? Or maybe it is in their home in Cambodia, the one with the stilts?

“Z wants to get back to Africa, and Shiloh too. So everyone takes their turns in their country.” So Shiloh is from Africa? Angie needs to do a little studying. You come from the country that your ancestors were born in. For example I am European even though I live and was born in North America. Africa is where Shiloh was born not where she comes from.

As for the dream of crossing the desert. Do it Angie and get it over with so we do not have to hear about it again. You have the resouces and the time (since you are not working) just do it.

Finally, as for the working. The fans are right. She doesn’t work much – it just feels like it because she makes sure that she has her picture taken at least 4 times a week and makes sure that she is at every festival known. Want to advertise a kids movie go to Cannes for attention. Just a week guys – do you think they can go one week without making sure they get some kind of pap attention. And don’t say they cannot avoid it – they can.

  60. Pity**I was born and raised in America, and yet the the flag of Scotland flies with the American flag at my stable. When my child is born the flag of our family crest and coat of arms will decorate the nursery walls. And the history of our family and our people will never be forgotten. There is no shame in knowing oneself.

  61. Pity says:

HorsePoor Hanna: Thank-You exactly what you said “And the history of our family and our people will never be forgotten”. Shiloh is not from Africa and never will be. The history of Brad and Angie’s people are not from Africa. Do you think that Angie is smart enough to realize this or do you think that she is teaching Shiloh that her history is in Africa. Hard to tell from her quote. Really sad.

  62. Lucky Charm says:

@Pity, Shiloh was born in Namibia, which is in Africa. She is not of African descent, but yes she IS FROM Africa. Just like all the military babies born overseas are from a foreign country, but not necessarily of that nationality. I was born in Japan, but I’m not Japanese. I would love to go back and visit the place I was born, just to see a part of my personal history.

  63. DD says:

Hmmm… Shiloh doesn’t really have any roots in Namibia. I know she was purposefully born there. But she was not raised there for any time nor does she have any heritage there. Angelina can be quite pretentious at times with these statements. Be proud of all your children even the plain American ones girl. They don’t need to be from some other part of the world to be cool.

  64. Pity**I am proud American. My ancestors are from Scotland,I have family in Scotland. But make no mistake,I was born in America, and I am American.Shilo was born in Africa. So yes,she is African.Your point would mean that I am not American, because of my heritage. What I’m saying to you is that,I honor my heritage,my family, even though,I’m American. If you have Celtic Scot in your blood, then indeed you have ties to Africa. We are descended from a Milesian war-chief,named Mile`s,and an Egyptian princess, named Scota(hence,Africa).Jolie may be smarter than you think!!

  65. Katherine says:

    18.hyena:
I’m interested in the News of the World thing. They sued them in the UK where the burden was on NOTW to prove it was true, not on Brangie to prove it wasn’t. With all of this phonetapping stuff it makes me wonder if it was true but NOTW couldn’t prove it without admitted they were up to illegal tapping.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You missed the part where the NOTW admitted their story was false. As in NOT TRUE.

The difference between British and US defamation law is not quite as you put it. It’s complicated – suffice it to say that in the US if you have a good faith basis (like a source or a properly conducted investigation) to publish something then you can get away with saying almost anything about a public figure aka celebrity. In reporting on public figures the question in defamation cases is not always about whether something is true or not. It is whether in publishing a story you acted with malice (meaning recklessly and without trying to be responsible about getting the truth). The defendant does have to make a showing that they acted reasonably in relying on their source or investigation.

This is precisely why Beckham lost his recent case. It wasn’t about whether the story was true or not. In fact Beckham made a showing that the story was not true and still lost. He still has a case against the woman who he says made up the story and lied to the magazine. He also still has a case against the magazine if he opts to sue them based on another cause of action besides defamation.

In the US courts have always been loathe to restrict the press in any way. We love our First Amendment. I suspect though that with the recent explosion of so much irresponsible gossip that libel and slander case law may get a bit tougher for defendants.

Law evolves and this area is ready for an evolution.

  66. Pity says:

@ Lucky Charm “but yes she IS FROM Africa”. Sorry but where you are born is not where you are from. You were born in Japan but you are not from Japan. And yes it can be neat to see where you are born – but it does not make you from there. Pretending that Shiloh is from Africa is just plain crazy. And “just like all the military babies born overseas are from a foreign country” Um no they are not. They might have been born there but are not from there.

No one know what the “Asian thing” is yet? I would love to hear it.

  67. Rena says:

Shiloh was born in Namibia, she is by birth an African. That is a fact. She is by birth also a citizen of the USA, so like CharlizeT who is a naturalized USA citizen who was born in the nation of South Africa, Shiloh is an African American.

Angelina and all the members of her family are chased by paps the moment they walk out the door. Her 6 small children have their names called and strange adults stalking them 24/7 just for going about doing ordinary things that others do every day. This family has the right like all others to go to the store, or to go to an aquarium or a museum, or to go to a park. Yet these small kids are always well behaved and courteous no matter how bothered they are by strangers, a sign of good parenting. The asinine and rediculous insistence that paps are called is as stupid as can be and any intelligent person would accept and admit that truth. Their pics sell so the paps stalk them. To compare the JP family to MerylS is so idiotic, a woman who had her family 20+ years ago before the advent of internet instant stalkers, who never captured the attention of and was therefore not used by lying tabs to lure in ignorant and uneducated adults (tab’s own assessment of those who buy their trash).

SJP lives in NYC and her family is stalked by paps every time any of them walk out the door as is Naomi Watts and LievS and their 2 small kids, each and every day.

Sad that a few are still so consumed with Angelina and finding something about her to be critical of. I wonder if those who still are such critics who analyze every word she ever says ever ask themselves what has this woman done to you personally that you are hypnotized into coming to all her threads and negatively ranting now for going on 7 years.

This is neither normal nor rational
    behavior,really.

BTW Brad said in his last and latest interview in USA Today Weekend a few months ago that he did not plan on acting forever. Same thing Angelina said in the FT article.

  68. lrm says:

    omg.
no she is not FROM AFRICA; it is her birthplace.
seriously, your line of thinking is really off….
    whew….
    shiloh is not african.
she’s whatever AJ and Brad are-perhaps a mix of french, native american, german ancestry….
yea, i have strong irish and scottish connections, and am american, but if my parents had had me w hilke living in mexico, i would not also be ‘from mexico’-
i would say mexico is my birthplace, but i am american, of irish and scottish ancestry.

    it’s a big difference, really.
and i also wondering what AJ meant in the interview-so her kids cannot simpply be american? the twins are ‘french’ then? are they ‘from france’?
    NO. It is their birthplace/location.
even if they carry a passport from being born somewhere, in addition to their US passport, nationality is also not who they are or where they are from, necessarly….

  69. Pity**This is part of a letter that my Great Uncle wrote to me: “No one is simply one anything:not one surname…not one nationality…not one religion…each of us is an individual and unique mix produced by our own distinct’river-of-genes’,flowing-unbroken-from the furthest reaches of times past. And,like any river, there are many tributary streams constantly flowing into, and contributing,to the main ones.BTW:We have a ‘Scotish thing’ goin’ on at the Hanna household!!

  70. Gio says:

@Pity: Then where is Shiloh from, exactly? You can’t say she’s from Malibu, or France, because she’s been moving around all her young life. Africa is her birthplace so I guess that’s the closest thing to a home base she has. My best friend is white and was born in Zimbabwe to British parents. He defiantly considers himself to be from Africa, even if he’s not “African.”

  71. bugsy says:

For the love of all that is holy. They flew in to Africa to have a well publicized birth. Then they flew home. Shiloh is not “from” Africa, for crying out loud. Jolie just likes to pretend that she’s so different and cool and weird and exotic. No child of theirs will ever be born in the US. It isn’t “awesome” enough for their egos. As far as “the Asian thing”? It’s just what you say when you adopt a son from a different country and you use every public opportunity to talk about how your family is oh so global. She thinks we’re all moronic.

  72. Katherine says:

Pity, I don’t know about that. My sister was born in Germany and held dual US/German citizenship until she had to give up her German citizenship to get a top level US security clearance.

She felt a kinship with Germany and, though obviously an American citizen, it was an interesting and welcome facet for her. I always thought it made her feel special. LOL! Why anyone would want to rag on the Jolie-Pitts encouraging their children to think beyond narrow minded borders is odd. It’s a healthy and welcome outlook on the world. It also encourages interest in other countries and cultures. That is never a bad thing.

I took the “Asian thing” to mean the Asian culture of their respective countries. What else would it mean? Why the unnecessary picking at every word this woman utters? The only thing I don’t know yet is what your problem is.

  73. bugsy says:

As far as the story goes, she said all this same shit in 2008. And “working” as an actress doesn’t only include the months that you spend filming. There is promotion, pre and post production, etc. Award shows, red carpets, product endorsements…I could go on and on. She may have only technically filmed one movie this year, but she doesn’t have a feasible concept of what it means to be out of “the business”. She’s so damn addicted to the business that we can’t go for very long without seeing her. And before you loons attack me, YES she CAN get out of the limelight. She’s done it before. She and Brad can go for months without us knowing anything about them (pure heaven, imo), and they can also visit the same places over and over again, knowing they’ll be papped (your own balcony every damn day? the same art shop?). If you really want a life away from all that, you can have it. She knows exactly what she’s doing. This side of 7 years ago, she openly admitted that she loved staying home with her husband and watching their favorite show, “King of the Hill”. She joked that her lifestyle could be considered white trash. Now she’s mother teresa, saving refugees and designing jewelry from high-conflict areas to sell back to a naive public. My my, how the tables turn when you have to find a new audience to cater to. I wonder who and what she’ll be when she has to find a new audience? Or a new partner, for that matter.

  74. pamela says:

Some people would dissect everything Angie says to criticize her, and yet she is right. Shiloh has a Nimibian passport, just like the twins have a French passport. There is a young man who attends the college where I work. He was born in the USA when his parents came here on vacation, and his mother went into premature labor. She had the baby here, and the family moved back to Italy, where they lived until he moved here to go to school. The reason he can do so, is because he has an American birth certificate, and is an American. Same thing with Shiloh and the twins. Or do you critics think the American heritage is the ONLY acceptable one? Just give it a rest….you will lose everytime when it comes to Angie.

  75. Raven Sparrow says:

I think what Pity is trying to say is that yes, Shiloh was born in Namibia,Africa but she did not grow up there, nor live there or ever went to school there.

While for you, Horsepoor Hanna, it’s totally different. You were born and raised in America and if I understand correctly, you still live there.

  76. Mrs. Odie 2 says:

5 weeks ago when I was in the hospital in my nightgown breastfeeding and feeling all soft and mama, I was NOT thinking I needed a gun. I was thinking, “God, I hope this peeing on myself thing is temporary.” She thinks giving children a rootless, nomadic existence is good for them, but I believe that she’s wrong. And how can anyone say they “seem” like well-adjusted kids? Based on photos of them?

  77. Addie says:

SO WHAT if Angie’s children are exposed to the paps??

She lives a very open and bold life.
She won’t let the paps dictate where she can and cannot go with her kids.
As long as they are safe (she has body guards around when they are in public)and the kids know that their mom and dad are with them, at ease and are not threatened, they will feel at ease and not threatened too.

Fame should not stop people from the simple things in life, like freakin going to a store with their kids.

Also, so what if she is working more than expected?
She is currently the HIGHEST paid actress in HW.
That gravy train won’t last her whole life, so she is jumping on board and riding it till she can’t anymore.
Infact, she is being quite modest by not accepting any role with a huge paycheck.

Let her do her thing now and enjoy her work. We will miss her when she actually does retire from this business.

  78. sandy says:

I’ll always love Angie for being brave in living her life the way she sees it right. I admire her for how she has turned her life around despite making big mistakes like Billy Bob Thornton for one. I admit I haven’t seen most of her movies but I like Angie for her personality and interesting quotes rather than her as an actress.

  79. Anonymous says:

Shiloh is African American? Really? Somebody needs to tell the Reverend Jesse Jackson that. I’d like to hear his reaction off camera.

    @70 lol

People, she sold pictures of her babies to magazines. That has nothing to do with the paps or where she goes and doesn’t go. It is grotesque.

  80. Addie says:

    As far as Shiloh goes…

She is not African. As a half Russian half South African living in South Africa I can say that it depends on what YOUR parents are or where you were brought up.

Charlize Theron IS South African by birth as well as BOTH parents were South African, she was raised here and left at 18 and has since become a US citizen.
Shiloh’s case is very different. She was born it a coutry and culture she has no real connection to. She can explore tne Namibian way of life when she is older, but she is not exposed to it at the moment she is not growing up with Namibia’s culture or people.

  81. lisa says:

Shiloh was born in Africa. My understanding is they gave her citizenship. Just as Angie was given citizenship in Cambodia.

    @Anonymous #51

You really had to reach to come up with celebrities. Meryly Streep had a successful career at a time in our history when the internet was not around. Nor the money incentive for pictures of said celebrities. Seriously. Meryl’s children are grown. It was a different time. I have seen comments from her and others that have said if the internet had been around when they were starting out they would have been on every cover. NOT to mention all the scandalous things these people were doing.

To say we see Angie and her family daily is silly. The fact is pictures of her, Brad and kids go vial. Any picture will be on every site in a matter of moments.

I could make a list of celebrities that are seen more than they are. And I am sure you would discount it as they are just enjoying their life. YOUR bias is so evident that further comment is not necessary.

And it seems that you have such a wealth of information on someone you don’t like perhaps you should try to avoid Angie. You seem to spend too much time following everything she does. That can’t be a fluke. That sounds like an agenda.

  82. Deltona lakes says:

What is so oddly bright about wearing coral in July?

  83. Derpy says:

    @81

Let’s take a look at a recent celebrity birth. A great singer, who is married to a tattoo artist… mhm.. P!nK and Carey Hart. They have nowhere near the star power, fan base, or careers that Brad and Angelina have, yet were hounded daily by photographers after their daughter was born. They went so far as to flip off paps every single time they went out with their daughter, knowing it wouldn’t end up on a magazine cover. Due to the hype and paps stressing them out, they released a photograph of their daughter themselves, astonished at the lengths people would go to, just to see their newborn. They took the power away from the paps, and the paycheck.

Escalate that into Angelina and Brads realm of stardom. They can disappear for weeks and months and the tabloids still plaster them on their covers, they can say or do absolutely nothing while a giant scandal is occurring and still take the covers. They took the power out of the paps hands, they took the paycheck a pap would have gained from stalking and harassing them and their family away. Yes, they were paid for the photographs of their newborns … and they donated it to charity. I’d much rather see photographs of peoples children that a magazine has paid for from their parents, who donate that money, than the shocking and appalling photographs of a mother that has just given birth hiding her child and flipping the bird to someone invading her space and privacy.

  84. Rose says:

Anonymous , why so much focus on the Jolie Pitts? Find someone you admire and spend your energy on them. This constant nick picking on the JPs only makes you appears unstable. Get a life, leave this family alone. Remember when you hate someone it’s like you drinking poison hoping the person you hate will die. You are only hurting your self. Guess what, I don’t think the JPs read these comments.l

  85. DD says:

@Gio – Was your friend raised for at least some time in Zimbabwe? Or did he just pass through to have a highly publicized birth? If he was raised for some period there then yes he has more of a whimsical connection to Zimbabwe, otherwise he’s just trying to stand out.
I have a friend who was born and actually DID live for the first 3 years of her life in Angola, yet she considers herself belonging to her parents country where she was raised for most of her memorable childhood. She can’t exactly remember much of her first 3 years of life so… I doubt Shiloh really will ever understand what life is actually like in Namibia, not from her parents heritage and not from her experience living there. To that person who said she is African American that is a very strange twist to that term.

  86. Eve says:

I checked the links. Her face is beautiful as always (yes, with the forehead vein and all), but now I have to say her hair looks dry.

Anyway, I’m sure she was truly moved and that her heart was in the right place when she decided to do that movie. Now I only worry about its quality. I don’t expect something great but I hope it’ll be at least a decent movie.

I would like to see a movie about a couple that I knew awhile back. He was Serbian, she was Bosnian, and they were in love. They fled the country, as he explained to me it was like inter-racial relationships/marriage in the South in the early-mid 1900’s – it simply was not tolerated.

They are here in America, and have 2 beautiful children.

She did some press for KFP2 and started post production on her own movie.
Which is not that much, especially for someone who is the highest paid actress in HW.

Im unenployd and has to run to the g**damn g people once or twice a week and i think i “work” more than her.
But that just be my twisted mind, which is a little upset that im not making millions while having fun, and getting a 100.000 check whenever ill go to a club as some celebs get.

    EDIT: Good point Derpy (85)

  89. Rena says:

LOL some of you have lost your minds at the thought of Shiloh being described as an African American. Let’s see, she has a Namibian birth certificate and a Namibian passport (according to a high Namibian government official)as well as an USA citizen passport and report of the birth of USA citizen born abroad to American citizen parents. Those equal a person who can certainly be said to be African American.

And since when has Jesse lying Jackson been relevant to any conversation about anything?

Some of you go so immediately totally ballistic and off the scale of normality and rationality about this celeb woman and her family.

Again why are you raging ones not asking yourself what she has done to you personally that you allow such addictive irrationality about her to control your lives for years and years and years. So long past time to move on from any perceived delusional phantom effect you want so much to believe that she, a complete stranger to you, has had on your lives.

    Really.

From one film a year to 1 film in 2 years.Looking forward to her directorial debut in Dec.Oh yeah loved the coral dress at the Sarejevo film festival where she received a standing ovation.

So ‘Anonymous’, Angelina’s life partner of 7 years (longer than he was even together let alone married to Aniston) and father of her children is just a ‘live in boyfriend’ to you, but Aniston’s ill-gotten latest gigalo is a ‘prince’ to you? Could you be any more desperate and delusional and sickenly sychophantic? The fact is, Angelina is NOT and NEVER has been a
homewrecker, and the FACTS, *more* than support this. This is far more evidence of Aniston’s homeewrecking than there ever could be of Angelina’s. Everyone, including your precious Aniston, said there was no homewrecking or cheating. There is according to ALL, no case to answer. Yet Aniston has proven that she has homewrecked. Face it; thats something you can never deny. Also, its the Aniston fans that won’t let this go, not the Angelina fans. You are proof positive that the loonifers won’t let it go and can’t accept the truth of your idol.

She is very wrong about traveling is the best way to raise kids. Its great for kids to be able to see other countries but every child needs stability and a set of friends, surroundings and a school they know well. If their kids had this stable home life plus traveled then great – but they dont. They are dragged around the world and in long run it will affect those children badly that they had no set roots. Especially the school age children who crave stability.

I get that Angelina is a nomad and THINKS that is whats best for her children but she is an adult and needs to realize that although she likes to travel often perhaps the kids do not like to as often.

I guarantee if you asked the kids they would all prefer a set home/school life vs traveling constantly.

Fine to take the kids on trips but again they need a stable home life first & foremost.

Kim Angie and Brad both said its what the kids want. And many would say you are very wrong. A child does not need to be rooted in one place like a pot plant. Traveling the world is the best life, it produces better educated, more secure, confident and outgoing children. It really is the best life and I bet if you asked any kid or even adult today they’d swap places with the JPs in a heartbeat.

Wow all these people judging how people they don’t know are raising THEIR CHILDREN.

I always wonder if the people that are complaining have children of their own. And if they do.. how would they react if a total stranger came up to them and said they were BAD parents.

I bet the fur would hit the fan. Must be nice to be so Perfect in the parent department. And able to judge how children are feeling or what they want when you have never seen them other than through pictures.

I don’t think anyone has ever heard their voices. yet people can sit behind a computer and judge.

    Wow.. just Wow

Their kids are their kids who either have ties or will have ties to their birth countries thru their foundations.

It is no accident where they were born, it was clearly chosen with a foundation in their honor definitely planned. Shiloh has been sponsoring charities in Namibia since her birth (look it up).

The first 3 are done (Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh’s with Pax next) as a tie in to their country of origin (birth). I find no fault in that and only wished others had thought of it too. Oh, Oh could that be part of the discomfort here AJ thought of it, so it must be odd.

I don’t think it is about being cool, but more about being compassionate with long term goals. I guess that IS cool, huh.

Her “boyfriend” comment is just a way to try and be disresptful and belittle BP, perhaps a better term is FATHER of her children, but that’s a HUGE ouch. Just like “Homewrecker” instead of “He Left Her”. See, this tactic is supposed to soothe them, but the longer they use it the harder the sting, since there does not seem to be an END in sight.

We know it has been less work, so instead it’s she is selling her kids images. Oh well, what can we do except NOT CARE what is said like the Jolie-Pitts, about twisting their words.

Lastly, the complaint about her wanting an action movie after her twins birth, does not seem odd for her, but would for me and anyone who DOES NOT do action movies, to all of a sudden want too. See, how crazy that is then, but normal for her. Love her for it. She gave us 2 great ones Wanted and Salt. For Salt 2 does she have to have another baby? One can only hope. Ouch again.

I have to say, I admire the fact that Angie still has respect for acting even though she is not as passionate about it.

It’s easy to see she understands that acting funds her way of life and her charity and UN work, but is not her existance. Her time with her kids, Brad and humanatarian works are more important. As they should be.
