When Kelly Osbourne was taking on Christina Aguilera, I was on Kelly’s side. But when she takes on a more beloved public figure… there might be a problem. It seems Kelly took issue with our favorite, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. Kelly was on Jay Leno’s show two nights ago, and she complained about Kate’s habit/insistence on recycling clothes:
Christina Aguilera isn’t the only person who Kelly Osbourne has sartorial problems with. During a Wednesday appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, the outspoken 26-year-old slammed Duchess Catherine for frequently recycling her wardrobe.
“In England they’re like, ‘Look how thrifty she’s being, showing the British public that the Royals are in a recession as well,'” Osbourne said. “Only in this country they call it a faux pas.”
Given the 29-year-old’s new role as Duchess of Cambridge, Osbourne doesn’t think she should have to repeat outfits by her favorite labels (including Diane von Furstenberg, Zara and Issa).
“I’m sorry, but if I had that job I would only wear it once,” Osbourne said. “If I am going to be the future bloody Queen of England I’m going to wear that dress once because I’m giving up the rest of my life, all of my privacy. At least I can get a new dress every day!”
Attempting to lighten the mood, Leno, 61, asked: “How about underpants? Would you throw them away?”
Osbourne replied: “Well, if I could, I would. That’s a really good idea, actually.”

Eh, I don’t understand why people are making a big deal about what Kelly said – she didn’t say “Waity is too lazy to even care about being presentable on a regular basis” (although that might be the subtext). I think Kelly accurately described how many of us are of two minds on Kate’s recycled-style habit. I think she’s making a conscious effort to LOOK like she doesn’t just spend her days shopping for new frocks, endlessly. I think she makes an effort to dress for the occasion, and when it’s a big occasion where she’s going to be the center of attention, she’ll wear something new. When it’s not about her, she’ll recycle. I can see the point of it, because she has some nice pieces, and any woman would want to wear those pieces more than once.
However – there are two bigger issues that Kelly didn’t address. One, Kate’s style is, at best, hit-or-miss. She’s worn some nice dresses, and she has a good eye for coats and suits. But she dresses a decade older than her real age, and there’s a noticeable lack of sophistication and just… JOY with her clothes. Being a duchess is fun! Getting dressed up is one of the few job requirements – find joy in it! The other big issue: the Catch-22 of being a duchess on a budget, with no place to go. She’s not working, she’s not doing royal or charitable events on a regular basis, so she’s just hanging out in Wales. Whenever she deigns to become a full-time working royal, I think there will be less recycling, because she’ll finally have an enormous staff in place, and at least three dressers and stylists on call.
By the way, the Duchess did make Vanity Fair’s “Best Dressed 2011” list. She’s right up there with Tilda Swinton, Justin Timberlake and… Carey Mulligan? Weird.

I actually respect the fact that Kate recycles her clothes. She’s sending the message that the importance is not on shallow things like what the hell you put on your body. I have heard that Katy does her own makeup, and she seems to not be flashy with her choice in clothing. I think she is pretty down to earth considering the amount of money at her disposal. Even William sports his bald spot with pride and he has the means to do something about it.

As for the crown estate, again had their forefathers not plotted and schemed they wouldn’t have all of that property. They’re not doing some big service to their “subjects” by paying tax on that.

How thrifty is it when most of her clothes are from designer labels anyway? The Jimmy Choo purse she used for the BAFTA dinner? Cost: almost $600, and that was just a small clutch. Are we all sure that that clutch will be the only clutch she’ll have, and that she’ll be using it every time she attends a party? Or will she only be using it 2-3 times, and then buy 4 more new and expensive purses this year?
How much did her 11-day wardrobe for the Canada/US tour cost? I am sure it was more than $10,000 when you factor in the McQueen dress. That’s not thrifty, in my opinion.
Just because she repeats her outfits doesn’t mean she actually cares about spending less. The clothes are still expensive as heck, and you all can expect she’ll be buying more clothes because she can’t and won’t be able to turn up in the exact same outfits she’s worn last week. She’s also being touted as a trendsetter and a fashion icon (what a joke, BTW) so she is more or less bound to show up in many kinds of different outfits so her adoring public can rush to the stores and copy their new idol’s style.

Expect her clothes to be all Diane von Furstenberg, Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Prada, and other expensive labels. Kate wasn’t poor before marrying William. The fashion industry is incredibly wasteful, and with so many celebrities wanting new outfits for each appearance, there is an enormous amount of waste created, even if some are given away, Clothes Off Our Backs-style. Besides wanting to wear something more than once because you love it, it makes sense for the planet. The level of entitlement inherent in getting new outfits each time is astounding.

What’s all the hype with Kate Middleton and why should nobody critisize her? I really don’t get it… For example, for me she’s boring, hard to tell if a good dresser or not (boring and previsible once again and lack any personal touch), she lacks personality. I don’t think she’s pretty, not ugly, of course, but she’s really too thin and her face features don’t impress me. They are both like puppets, that happen to be prince and duchess. I’m not jealous. KO is a rather unfortunate-looking young woman. No matter how much weight she loses, she will still look like a troll version of a Kewpie doll. She’s become an angry thinner woman that somehow thinks she is relevant, accomplished, and appealing.
CA can lose weight and update her look and she can be flawless again.
KO however, will always be ugly, inside and out. It’s only a matter of time until she implodes and she returns to her true fat self

Kate recycling her dresses is a good, smart gesture and in line with her no-fuss attitude about clothes and fashion. I know Kelly’s on a fashion show and has to sound catty and controversial but, really, her comments are silly and superficial.
