Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone at the VMAs: now she’s copying Andrew Dice Clay?

wenn3485622

Lady Gaga decided to forgo the meat dresses and the eggs and whatever giant set-piece, head-piece, costume drama she could think of last night. Instead, she went as her drag king alter ego, Jo Calderone. I’ve said before that Jo reminds me of the actor Adam Goldberg. But last night, Gaga/Jo channeled Andrew Dice Clay. Of all of the people Gaga could “copy”… Andrew Dice Clay?!? For real? It was a performance art FAIL, to say the least.

I guess I should give Gaga props for staying “in character” throughout the show, and for really showing commitment to the Jo character she’s created. But Jo is such a creep, and I feel like Gaga just created Jo so she could talk about how brilliant she is in the third person. IT’S ART, Y’ALL. We get it.

Gaga’s performance of “You & I” provided my favorite moment of the night though. Not the actual performance, which was kind of meh, especially since Jo has a Napoleon Complex (he’s so little!) and he thinks he can straddle the piano and it will be… sexy? Anyway, Jo/Gaga busted his ass falling off the piano and the cutaway to Adele was PRICELESS. Adele is such a pro, and she’s so beautiful, and her face had this magnificent look of “WTF? This dumbass bitch.” I had a giggle fit. I also loved the cutaway to Dave Grohl when Queen’s Brian May came out with his guitar. Dave lit up like Christmas came early, It was really cute.

Here’s Gaga’s performance of “You & I”. She’s trying way too hard.

I think at first the whole costume get-up thing was interesting. Now it’s just becoming tiresome and embarassing. You’ve got a great voice, people like you, stop with the halloween every day thing. We’re over it.

  2. Schnauzers!!! says:

Um..I think Jo should be left in the artsy fartsy black and white photo shoots.

  3. Addie says:

This Jo charachter creeps the hell out of me.

It also seems that during the performance, she was trying to chanel a bit of Prince craziness, the only difference is Price is a legendary and untouchable talent, she/he is just trying too hard.

  4. atlantapug says:

OMG this whore needs to STOP!!!

She doesn’t have a single original thought in her vapid, empty balloon head.
She relies on the public not having a long enough memory to know she’s a complete rip-off of other artists.
    Guess what? We know.

I would be embarassed for her if I gave a shit.

  5. the original bellaluna says:

Does “ICK. NAST.” even begin to cover it?

    I don’t think so. FAIL.

Addie, I didn’t watch, but Prince is ABSOLUTELY UNTOUCHABLE, and there is no 1 who “compares 2” him. (shout out and love to Prince!)

  6. Juliesunflower says:

    Ugh!!! Enough already!

  7. Sandra says:

more like a 70’s Al Pacino

  8. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I loved it. Channeling Andrew Dice Clay my ass. She was channeling one those guys from the 50s one of those tough guys. Hence the reason she was dressed like one of those tough guys. Andrew Dice Clay, please, they may have SOUNDED similar but thats not channeling someone to sound similar to them. I loved it.

Please don’t start this Gaga VS Adele BS. Adele never had no such look on her face. Adele looked concerned for her as did everyone they showed but Lady Gaga kept on singing. True freaking artist right there. I loved Lady Gaga as Joe.

She was so understated and I felt most of the woman who dressed crazy that night (Katy, Nicki) wanted to kinda be in Gaga’s league but bam!!! Gaga comes as a f*cking man, in a suit that looked like it cost 50 bucks to put together and she stayed that way the whole night. Give Gaga some freaking credit. She was brilliant last night and as usual gracious and praised the other artists in the room. GMAFB

  9. Riana says:

    Ughso fucking sick of her.

The alter ego could have been great if she didn’t spend the first 10 minutes cussing like a 12 yr old boy and essentially gushing about…herself.

    Yay.

I tried to watch her set but I, and every celeb in the audience, had no fucking clue what she was doing so I paused and moved on with my life.

Damn…now I have to watch for Adele’s face!

  10. constance says:

I happened to catch her Jo act at a friend’s last night. Normally I wouldn’t bother watching mtv anymore. We were all of the mind that she didn’t really come off very well with it. Good for her to try out her version of Andy Kaufman’s Tony. However, I think the drawn out introduction and awkward dance moves really didn’t impress anyone I was sitting with. We all laughed at her yelling “No one has ever done this!” But yeah, Madonna did have a men’s suit and drag phase too honey. Google your ideas before you claim they are your own. Kind of like Bette’s mermaid, I think she came up short with her performance. I couldn’t get into the song at all.

She has some serious stand alone complex about her “original Art.” The saving grace was the guitarist from Queen (I believe) who looked like he was having a good laugh at it all.

  11. Juliesunflower says:

Ugh!!! Enough already! Good thing Britney had the sense for once not to kiss her.

  12. Eve says:

I seriously want to punch her in the face.

    EDIT @ Sandra (# 7):

Please, do not ruin young Al Pacino for me. Please, I beg of you.

  13. Len says:

iew, she scares me with this! Very, very creepy..

  14. Original Bee says:

The truth is there is pretty much nothing left an artist can do to shock the public anymore. Once upon a time Elvis swivling his hips was enough to cause panic among the masses. Now Lady Gaga takes on a male alter ego and the biggest reaction most of the public, myself included, can muster to this is a collective yawn. It’s pretty amazing actually. Anything Gaga tries to do has already been done before. What really shocks me nowadays is an artist like Adele. Someone who can actually sing and doesn’t rely on sily tricks to get attention. Hang up the suit and the mermaid fins GaGa and just sing.

  15. the original bellaluna says:

Original Bee – YES! Adele! And Dave Matthews Band! (AWESOME in concert!)

  16. Addie says:

bellaluna I HATE mentioning this she/he person in the same breathe as Prince, but she seems to keep copying MAJOR talents and is not embarrased in the least.

I swear some legendary artists need not be attemted to be imitated unless you wanna look like a damn fool.

  17. Riana says:

Okay Justin Bieber and Adele’s expression’s officially killed me.

Poor Adele, I’m sure she was wondering whether she should have passed on showing up to the award’s show after that. And Justin…he looked like he was listening to someone read their thesis on the effects of global warming on bumblebees.

Gaga might be hitting he’d wall sooner than I thought. Beside the screaming 12 yr old fans everyone else looked like they could care less.

  18. Buffy Wilson says:

This only reason why I’m watching this video is Brian May.

….ugh, that was a lot of talking…but I love my Brian.

  19. lucy2 says:

Agree, Original Bee. Shock value is overrated and underwhelming these days, and I have much more appreciation for true talent.
    Totally Adam Goldberg. Not good.

  20. the original bellaluna says:

Addie, AGREED. (Embarrassing at best, a sacrilege at worst.)

  21. Ivy says:

Every time I see her, I think “Just shut up and sing!!” She’s such a talented singer, and it’s a shame that she feels the need to rely on all these ridiculous (and wayyy oversexualized) props – I mean, enough already.

I literally had to turn the channel last night because I was so uncomfortable (and embarassed for her). I’m all about “performance art”, but this was an epic, weird, and most definitely “what kind of drugs are you on?” kind of fail…

  22. Thea says:

Ok. She needs to concentrate on the music and not these weird ass hallucinations she is having from her drug use. Real talent doesnt need gimmicks once they have your attention. She scares me honestly.

  23. ShanKat says:

    The Karate Kid. Part Ew.

  24. DetRiotgirl says:

Ok, I had mixed feelings about this performance. So, I’m just going to do a little snapshot of my thoughts here:

    * If she lightened up a little on the brooding eye make up and smoking, Gaga would actually make a pretty cute guy

    * Why is Jo so angry all the time? He scares me a little.

    * Wow, Gaga sure does like talking about herself.

    * She seems so, so angry considering she’s singing a love song. Did she and Lüc Carl break up again? Is she trying to imitate him with this weird speech?

    * As much as I can’t stand Lady Gaga, Lüc Carl is worse. Just look at the way he spells his name! Douchiest douche ever to douche.

    * Madonna already did this whole routine with “bye bye baby”, although in her case she took more of a Marlene Dietrich route than… Whatever this is.

    * For the love of God, why is she trying to make this dance break happen?

    * Gaga fell on her ass! HA!

    * Gaga can really sing. So, why does she need to do all this other crap?

I don’t know. In totality, I thought it was ok. It was at least somewhat interesting, if only for the bizarre bull-dozer-like awkwardness and determination she brought to her Jo character.

  25. Raven says:

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who thought “Hey! It’s Ralph Macchio!” but I was reminded more of his character from “The Outsiders.”

  26. hairball says:

I think her fans bought into the illusion she was actually pretty. But without her over the top and confusing make-up – her face is really very homely.

I was cringing too, completely embarrassed for her.

  27. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Gimme a break people, her face was done up like that on purpose. *rolls eyes* Gaga wasn’t trying to play a pretty guy she was trying to be a scraggy, mangy guy. I don’t understand why people are acting like this is the weirdest thing they have seen. Whats with all this “you can sing, just sing crap, don’t do any of the extra stuff,” thats fu*king boring. Let the girl have fun and be creative. I am sure half of you get as creative as a French manicure which is why you are coming down so hard on her.

  28. Cherry Rose says:

@atlantapug – Cosign 100%. But Gaga still has some older fans, who KNOW that she’s blatanly ripping off other artists, who either ignore that fact, or make excuses for it.

I wouldn’t mind Gaga so much, if she would give credit where credit is due. But she doesn’t. Gaga acts like it was her own original idea. She hardly ever gets called out on it though. Probably because of the few instances where Gaga got called out for copying, she throws a huge hissy fit.

Anyway, why does MTV even have music awards anymore? It’s not like the channel is anything more than a place for horrible reality shows.

  29. Mimi says:

Because of my theatre background I really loved this. Just because it’s been done before doesn’t mean it isn’t still cool. I realize I’m def in the minority in this case but oh well. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and i actually really enjoyed Gaga’s performance. Although, For me the best part of the show was Adele. That woman is beyond gifted. What an amazing voice. Bow down…

  30. Hautie says:

Let see… can I say something nice.

    She has a lovely complexion.

She can really sing. I like her music.

(But I am completely baffled by all her crazy.)

Love that Brian May played live.

Most of all, I am pleased that she actually sang live.

Since that is never a given at this awards show.

  31. Adrien says:

Richard Hawley would like a word. The Brylcreem look’s been done.

  32. Goofpuff says:

There is not an original bone in her body. Ugh. She is so full of herself and pretending her narcissim is “art” is insanely dumb. This bit has been done before and better.

  33. bored says:

Love, love, love Gaga. She can do her drag king thing for me anytime.

  34. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@Cherry Rose What hissy fit? Please tell me when Gaga has ever even given her haters a second glance. I bet you can’t.

  35. Lindy says:

I guess I just don’t get all the comments about her “unoriginality” or her “copycat” behavior. News flash: the last time art was truly original was around 17,000 years ago, when homo sapiens first started painting pictures on cave walls and singing songs around the fire pit while dressed up in nature costumes.

Everything ever since has been a riff on that, or an homage, or an attempt at reinvention, or an effort at refining and improving. So Gaga is copying Prince? Yeah. And Prince copied others. And they copied others. I give her props for trying all the time, for having some real pipes, for finding creative ways to copy/repeat/refine, for caring about her fans and about some social issues….

  36. maggiegrace says:

It’s her tough-guy underbite that bugs the crap outta me.

  37. Alice says:

I like her better this way. I’d love it if she ‘became’ Jo Calderone and never went back to being Lady Gaga.

  38. Redd says:

@shan kat, you nailed it; and this is exactly why we don’t see Gaga as Gaga, bitch is ugly and bitch knows it! So out comes all the art to camouflage the ugly. And no, singers that can and do sing don’t have to rely on art to do so.

  39. Amandahugandkiss says:

I remember reading (or was it watching?) something about drag kings a long time ago- apparently a lot of women pick their drag personas based on their own perceptions of men.

Take from that what you will.

  40. Maritza says:

I’d rather see her in her crazy outfits than this disaster, she looks creepy and her character was not funny at all.

  41. Nancy says:

    S-T-U-P-I-D!!!!!!

  42. Jayna says:

It wasn’t shocking. It was boring and took away from the beauty of the song.

  43. aenflex says:

fuck that – i just lost any and call contempt for Gaga. Fuck that. This chick is awesome, I love the alter ago. Most girls wouldn’t dare this.

  44. Joe says:

Years before Gaga, before Madonna, I’m pretty sure Annie Lennox dressed up like a guy during one of her performances, and looked exactly like Gaga did last night. I’m pretty tired of her “out there” copy-cat schtick, too. I’d almost rather see her on something tame, like Ellen DeGeneres, where she just talks and sings. She’s so talented and pretty interesting in that scenario, without all the crazy. I was really thrilled to see Brian May, too! He’s one of the world greatest guitarists, his sound is so original, I’d have know it was him if I had a blindfold on. It’s so rare to get a chance to see him. No wonder Dave Grohl was lit up like a Christmas tree.

  45. palermo says:

I would like to like Lady Gaga but I can’t but she is just way too over the top, all the time. Watching her stumble around in those club foot shoes makes me want to scream. One day she will be old and won’t be able to walk properly, why is she starting it in her 20s. I wish she would just play and sing, period.

  46. snapnhiss says:

I thought the intro went on a little too long but I can appreciate the theatricality Gaga brings to her acts.

  47. ksmit100 says:

i used to like gaga. poker face was cool and it was clever to boot. this song, as well as edge of glory…make..no sense? i don’t know. “we have a whole lotta money but we still pay rent cause you can’t buy a house in heaven” uhhh what? sometimes i feel like she just opens a thesaurus and finds synonyms for words with a grandiose meaning and throws them into some senseless jumble. i guess this goes back to her meat dress last year. when asks what the point was, she made up a bunch of crap about standing up for your rights but that she wasn’t disrespecting peta or vegans. i quote myself when i say “uhhh what?”

i have no problem with her lack of originality either. i just don’t like how she makes a point to address how original and creative she is.

  48. tmbg says:

-Her nasal voice is irritating as hell

    -She looks like the Fonz

-Someone had to clean up all that beer she threw around quickly for the next act. Have a little consideration, you nimrod!

  49. gab says:

I wish it would just go away already.

  50. Happy21 says:

I think Gaga is who she is and I think she’s crazy but I think she has a great voice and isn’t afraid of what people think.

What I can’t understand is why people always have to compare things to other artists, etc. (Lennox, Madonna, Prince). Maybe she thought this alter-ego up and never looked back or cared if she was channelling another artist in their heyday. I don’t think everything is about copying one another. I’m pretty much its ALL been done before. Her young fans didn’t see it though so who really cares.

  51. jover says:

Agree with cherry rose and others; if gaggles wanted to be really controversial, she would’ve followed adam levine’s lead and said f the vma’s; mtv hasn’t been about music in 15 years since cheap pseudo reality shows took over; but she’s a consummate label creation and industry player whose controversy is all contrived; and while some liked seeing brian may, I’m distressed; why does Brian May – he’s published papers in astrophysics and built his own guitar – need this crapfest? How many tweens in the audience even know who brian may and queen is? But he’s a legend so he get’s a pass;I suspect that one reason gaggles appears on stage with the likes of Elton john, brian may, etc., is to deceive some into believing she is somehow as legendary as they are.

  52. Turtle Dove says:

I am sooooo fucking over her. Go away.

  53. Schnauzers!!! says:

I don’t want Gaga to go away. I would love to see more of her beautiful face than all the weird makeup.etc..and hear her beautiful voice. The costumes have gotten old for me. It was funny in the beginning, but this lady has some MAJOR talent.

She should put out a picture book (read coffee table book! ala “Sex”) of her looks as a gag, and then just be her true self. (and blow everyone away)

  54. ladybert62 says:

I am starting to think that Lade GaGa has some serious mental health issues.

  55. Stubbylove says:

Didn’t Garth Brooks do this stupid-ass thing with his Chris Gaines circa 1999? My reaction is *Yawn*.

  56. sassy says:

    well…
I agree with LoveAngelina. I do love me some Gaga, and I like that she does something different. It ain’t for everybody. My 4 year old daughter ADORES her! I know, I’m a bad mommy. You guys should have seen her reaction to Gaga dressed as a guy! She was so upset with her, so confused! She cried! I had to convince her that this was still Gaga. Some people say famewhore-y, and maybe she is. But I like her style and she is bringing life to pop music as far as I’m concerned. Better than Britney!

  57. 4Real says:

Does she realize how FUGLY she is already?? This “persona” is gross, offensive on the eyes and I only got to “my name is Joe” and stopped it because vomit was rising up.

  58. Stacia says:

Her music career has officially jumped the shark.

BIT*H NEEDS TO STOP WITH THESE ANTICS!!!

  59. Jane says:

The hate on Lady Gaga is ridiculous. You may not like her, but making immature and childish remarks about how ugly or has no original bone in her body, THAT is tiring.

In the world art, whether it be music, fashion, etc, no one is 100% original. They are influenced by previous artists.

But the truth is Gaga is one of the most original pop musicians today. Not only does she write all of her own music, she is a fantastic pianist, and she does give credit where it is due, the most to her fans. While Gaga is a singer, musician, and songwriter, Britney relies on auto-tune and buys her songs (She turned down Gaga’s “Telephone” song).

She is definitely weird. Perhaps a bit crazy. She understands people view this of her. But her music typically is more original sounding, sometimes even darker and deeper, than other pop music today.

Adele is a wonderful singer too! 🙂

  60. MissB says:

So no one is allowed to anything that has been previously done before? Even if it was decades ago? I better remember that next time I wanna take a bath / eat a cheese sandwich / breathe some oxygen.

  61. Rebecks says:

Still laughing over the Adam Goldberg reference, spot on!

I wish there was a better angle of her falling off that piano. Still baffled that her people let her go on a 5 minute rant about herself in the third person, character or no character. She has crossed the line from narcissism to megalomania!

  62. Hootie Hoo says:

Who is she? Will the real Gaga please stand up? I can understand trying to be different and unique but she is lacking in authenticity. Even though she has a great voice I feel she is wearing too many masks. I’d like to see the real artist stripped down.

  63. VeneficA Delirium says:

@MissB: Oh, for Christ’s sake, SHE’S the one always claiming to be original and up until she became so blatantly contrived and unoriginal that it became indefensible, her fans made her out that way as well. Now they’re all defensive and singing a different tune about her unoriginality, backpeddling, with the same tired argument that “WELL NOBODY’S REALLY ORIGINAL ANYWAY SO THERE!!!11!!11!”.

Maybe if she wasn’t constantly slamming her lips together about what a truly unique little snowflake or tortured artiste she is, she wouldn’t be burdened with the responsibility to prove herself as any of those things, but she does. If you make such bold claims about yourself, especially as someone who hasn’t even been popular that long, you damn well better be able to back it up. Nobody’s criticizing Britney Spears for being unoriginal because she doesn’t sit there and go on and on about how “unique” she is and promoting her album as “the greatest one of the decade” (even though half of her fans are already beginning to turn on her since Born This Way has been released and are sick of her antics).

Anyway, I finally heard the whole song and watched the performance. It sounds like something you would hear at the bank or in an office. It basically sounds like elevator music, so no wonder why she needed to compensate in theatrics because it’s otherwise a complete snorefest. I also had no idea what she was rambling on about before she began performing. She really likes hearing herself, and what’s with the faces? Is drawing out your lower jaw, making uncomfortable grimaces, and sneering supposed to look tough or macho? If so, it failed. It looked unnatural at best.

I don’t like Adele’s music even though I admit that she has a really pretty voice, but I like *her*. She was shooting lazers with that look, and Gaga deserved it.

The only thing remotely shocking about this performance is that she didn’t strip for once.

  64. original kate says:

    “She looks like the Fonz”

    LMAO @ tmbg! aaaaaayyyyyyy!!

gaga has a talent for not only copying everyone on the planet but also for getting on a trend when it’s on its way out. someone needs to tell this “cutting edge” artist that drag kings are already over.

  65. Riana says:

If someone copies 1 piece of schtick from another time they should hardly be stoned. When someone’s WHOLE career is copying others work and then claiming they were ‘inspired’ or gushing about an individual but then not knowing the basic aspects of their portrayal (Bette’s Mermaid) well frankly they should be hated on.

The worst thing about what Gaga does, is she hedges her bets and crosses her fingers hoping individuals not as informed on music or history or style will defend her assuming that even HALF of what she puts out is true to her (sorry folks it’s not). At least the 12 yr olds have an excuse, most however see her as the industry machine she is ripping off and manipulating at will.

  66. gg says:

This was understandable in a black and white photo shoot, which I didn’t like, btw, but not at the awards.

I’m thinking she reeeeeeally really wants to be an actor.

  67. gg says:

Also I agree with maggie grace – the underbite is soo played out and looks bad. she also does it in her videos when she’s dressed as a woman.

Ladies – underbiting on purpose and showing your bottom teeth (see Courtney Stodden) look stoopid, especially when you’re trying to look sexy.

  68. ADC says:

@LOVE ANGELINA thank you! You get it. Her performance was amazing, I loved it!

  69. gg says:

and one more thing – the drill team dancing crap on that slow song look supremely ridiculous.

I am a fan of Gaga but I’m gonna pretend I haven’t seen this poor display of misplaced identity.

  70. Amanda G says:

Enough with the “she copied!” crap. I’m so bored with it being “cool” to name every artist she “copied.” Yup, she’s not the first person to ever dress in drag, but neither is Bowie or Madonna or Annie or any of the other artists that you throw out there. Gaga definitely isn’t original, but I look beyond that and see her talent. She can sing and I like quite a few of her songs.

The speech I could have done without, but the performance was good. I also could have done without her interacts with Britney. That was awkward.

  71. Kasey says:

As an elementary teacher, Gaga reminds me of the kid you feel kind of sorry for because they crave constant attention. They aren’t ever content to just do a good job/be but ALWAYS need to be seen and heard and CONSTANTLY need to be working at being seen and heard and CONSISTENTLY (except for when they’re ill I guess) need affirmation that they are being seen and heard. Unfortunately, for everyone else around they do it in increasingly outlandish and irritating ways.

I can’t help but think she is the musical version of the Kardashian Kids. That brand is also ANNOYING. I’m TIRED and want them to GO AWAY! Not Khloe and Lamar though. I like them. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s possible for them to exist without everyone else so I’m willing to bid them adieu too. I’m starting to believe this may never happen though. The Jenner girls are coming up, Mason is getting to talking age and Kim/Khloe/Kourtney can start popping out a new klan at anytime! And we all now Kris Jenner will do whatever she has to to make sure she prolongs and ensures the extension of the 15 minutes of fame and her TEN PERCENT!

Uhhh…yeah, all that to say, go away Gaga! Take a break! Come back when you’ve toned down a bit.

  72. fizXgirl314 says:

This bitch needs to be put out of her misery…

  73. yoho_ahoy says:

*yawn* so bored of gaga now. Was xpecting her 2 selfcombust frm narcissim & self praise. The WTF look on sum of the celebs in the audience was priceless! Brian May was th best part of that performance!! Pissed myself laughin wen she fell off th piano – the fates r kind 2day =D

  74. Orion70 says:

Is she slowly morphing into Bob Geldof?

  75. fizXgirl314 says:

This bitch gives me so much second hand embarrassment. I can’t watch anything if I know she’s going to make an appearance. I seriously feel major embarrassment on her behalf… which is really sad because I wouldn’t mind catching glimpses of some of these shows…

  76. yoho_ahoy says:

@orion70 bite ur tongue!! Andrew dice clay hands down!

  77. sam says:

Thought the song and performance was brilliant (loved the dance routine). i know she is not necessarily original, but i love that she shakes things up a little instead of being a typical pop star.

Think the reason Jo Calderone doesn’t work for people is because the character is a DOUCHE! She’s really selling it – but it would work better if he was more of a broody James Dean type with just a hint of tough.

  78. Skinnybetch says:

I swear everyone is the music industry has multiple personality disorder. She really creeped me out last night with her Joe Calzone alter ego bs!

  79. NaomiCampbellsPhone says:

Look guys! It’s a video of a true musical genius performing at the VMA’s! And Lady Gaga was on stage too.

  80. Laurie M. says:

I agree – she keeps trying WAY TOO HARD to keep up this gaga thing. I’m over it…then again, I was never into it in the first place.

  81. Happy21 says:

She’s so entertaining! I don’t know how anyone could find her anything but. She is playing a role. Her whole ‘act’, personality, what have you is always for entertainment purposes.

Comparing her to the Kardashians or other famewhores is hilarious. She is talented. She isn’t on the cover of every supermarket tabloid, she doesn’t go out and get drunk where people take pictures of her falling down, she doesn’t have a sext tape she marketed to make money on. There are a whole lot of differences between her and the famewhores of reality TV. She is an enteratiner. We don’t have to know who she truly is.

  82. Jil says:

Annie Lennox did it better 20 years ago. Fail. Next.

  83. Cherry Rose says:

Look at it this way. Would Gaga ever have become as big as she is (which still baffles me) if she didn’t have the stupid costumes and wasn’t always spouting off stupid things?

Would she have been able to get big in the music industry on her voice and talent alone, like Adele?

    Answer: Most likely not.

Let’s not forget that before Gaga went into pop music, she tried to make it in the rock music scene. Obviously, that didn’t work out.

So pretty much, without her stupid outfits and costumes, and her stupid antics, no one would have even given Gaga a second glance, nor would she be a big popstar.

  84. smh says:

to be honest she looks much better as a man. probably because she has hideous outfits as a female performer and the “artist” schtick wore out long ago; but that fact seems lost on her producers for some reason. she did an o.k. job with this presentation, given that she’s not an actress/comedian. idk stephanie is talented as a singer and songwriter but her endless antiques have made people seriously dislike her. and it was probably part of the concept that was created for her, even the name is part of the packaging. she needs to stop wasting time and energy on stupid shit and just be a musician, like Adele. but i don’t see that happening any time soon to be honest, she’s a self proclaimed fame addict, she can’t get rid of the speculation factor.

  85. macey says:

I cant believe Im typing this b/c i usually cant stand her attention getting stunts but I really enjoyed her performance of this song last night.
i didnt see the beg. babble so i wasnt even sure it was her until they announced it at the end. I honestly think she looks better as a man. I didnt see the Andrew Dice Clay connection at all, reminded me of more of a 50-60’s character, especially when ‘he’ was with the b/u dancers.
I didnt get the character thing until i read it here. that part was kind of annoying and awkward during the show but i really think she could pull off the trans-gender thing w/o a problem.

  86. Firecracker says:

Eve: I seriously want to punch her in the face.

atlantapug: I would be embarassed for her if I gave a shit.

    This 100x.

  87. UrFavoriteBartender says:

She looked more masculine than Bieber! LOL and yes, she’s more “authentic” than say an auto-tune artist like Britney but she’s also turned that very uniqueness into something over-exposed and in turn, has become just as contrived as the rest.
However, her humility&kindness towards her fans is redemptive and I hope she never loses her head too far up own her ass to forget that 🙂

  88. corey says:

I’ll be the first to say when Gaga annoys me, at times she can be pretentious, but I liked this. Other pop stars have alter egos, so why not?

  89. Franny says:

I’m watching the show now (I couldn’t yesterday due to my boyfriend NEEDING to watch the Raider game). I actually really liked her performance. It was something new that hasn’t been done in a while.

And it was much better than that damn meat dress.

  90. chloe says:

Honestly, what is “original” anymore? Lady Gaga is NOT the only one to rip off other artists…

  91. Saor says:

Oh God I’m actually so attracted to her as this Jo Calderone. It’s confusing me.

  92. Kendra says:

wtf, Gaga?? Whatever you’re smoking, please stop…just…stop

  93. LittleDeadGirl says:

That was beyond sad. All I kept thinking was it looked like a chick talking smack about her boyfriend by using a pretend “boy” voice.

  94. Jennifer Chaos says:

She’s creative. She’s fun. If you don’t like her, turn her off. She’s talented, she can write a song, and she’s different. In a cookie cutter world, I think she’s a breath of fresh air.

  95. margaret says:

I don’t usually root for her, but in this case I thought she was so cool I felt like I finally seen a person

  96. blinditemreader says:

This ‘character’ was contrived, obnoxious and better left to photo shoots. Her massive ego showed when she kept on trying to refocus attention to herself during Britney’s acceptance speech. Miss Stefani must be too coked out or surrounded by too many people afraid to say no to her (or both).

Edited to add that the whole thing just came off as embarrassing. And I like performance art.

  97. Becky says:

I don’t like the Jo persona but she definitely can sing. Beyond all the attention seeking crap, she’s truly talented.

  98. poodlemom says:

    Epic fail!

  99. the original bellaluna says:

Unfortunately, the “rip off” is not original. It’s been going on since the 80’s, AT LEAST, as far as I know. (And probably way farther back than that.)

But the rip off of things we (some of us, anyway) hold dear is unacceptable. I don’t want to hear some wanna-be trying to rap/sing over the hook that THEY stole from an artist who stole THAT hook from someone who was an original in the 50’s or 60’s or 70’s or even the 80’s! (“Baby You Send Me” anyone? Just one that jumps to the forefront of my mind. For you novices, it was a 90’s song that stole from Spandau Ballet’s 80’s song.)

Yeah, don’t get me started. It’ll be a L-O-N-G night, and hubs and I have *ahem* plans.

  100. Flan says:

    I like her.

Because she’s not the prettiest, she does not rely on just sex to sell her music, like most people nowadays (especially Rihanna lately).

  101. joan of snark says:

wonderful wonderful wonderful! she’s emulating the great male rock stars as well as the women! she’s giving herself room to create more alternative music and commenting on her Gaga character. She’s risking a mother fucking lucrative pop career and that is so damn cool. I loved the confusion on BRITNEY SPEARS face! “Wait. Where are her tits? she can sell records with out showing her tits?”

  102. VeneficA Delirium says:

@Flan: “…she does not rely on just sex to sell her music, like most people nowadays (especially Rihanna lately).”

Hahahhahahahaha. Oh god that’s rich. Funniest comment in this thread. Her music videos all look like a softcore porn parody of Derek Zoolander’s fever dream. Too many of us have seen wayyy more of Lady Gaga than we’ve ever bargained for. She’s “overexposed” alright, in more ways than one. I’ve seen her with her bits hanging out way more often than not.

Hey guys, Lady Gaga is talented! So that totally entitles her to act like an asshole all the time!

  103. Andie B says:

Lady Gaga hasn’t bothered me much until now. I caught some of her performance, and I have to say, her alter ego gives me the CREEPS. She may call it performance art, but that character makes my skin crawl. Something is up with that girl. Britney looked great, and I’m so glad she didn’t snog gaga. Looks like Brit’s decision making has improved.

  104. Flan says:

@VeneficA Delirium. Yeah, her things hang out sometimes, but since most people don’t find her sexy, it’s still not sex she sells but weirdness.

Perhaps too difficult for you to understand the difference.

  105. VeneficA Delirium says:

@Flan: Wait, so because she’s “ugly”, she isn’t as skanky as the rest of them?

Maybe it’s because I actually *do* find her attractive (as a heterosexual woman, I’m capable of admitting I do feel jealous of her) and I’m surrounded by fanboys who otherwise wouldn’t be caught dead listening to mainstream music but pretend to enjoy her songs just so that they can, ugh, watch her gratuitously strip down to nearly nothing, simulate sex, and writhe around in her ten-minute “performance art” music videos on MTV that I don’t agree with your reasoning at all. In fact, a lot of Lady Gaga fans I know spend more time gushing over how hot she is than actually discussing her songs.

  106. patty says:

    gaga is real unique!

  107. Flan says:

@VeneficA Delirium, maybe the people you hang out with are like that, but lots of people just like to dance or listen to her songs (without video clips). Many of Gaga’s songs at least have some different topics than love/lust for some imaginary guy.

Other people just like the general weirdness, which is more interesting than yet another pop’star’ who just shows as much flesh as she can, while cooing in interviews about how much she loves her parents/god and really is so normal.

  108. Violet says:

@Joe nailed it. Lady Gaga totally ripped off Annie Lennox. Lady Gaga doesn’t have an original bone in her body — which is fair enough, a lot of performers don’t — but what really bugs me is how she never gives credit to the people she copies unless she’s called out.

  109. GaGaLoVa says:

I LOVE GAGA! Her performance was absolutely amazing! She knows how to impress and put on a show. I don’t care what anyone thinks about her performance IT WAS AMAZING! Who cares if she dressed up as Joe Calderone to talk about how amazing she is? She is an amazing woman and has every right to talk about her brilliance. I would. I love you MOTHER MONSTER! I put my paws up for you to show I am a little Monster. 🙂 <3 <3 <3

  110. pato says:

why does she need to do all those stupid things she does? she´s just a famewhore

  111. Jess says:

I loved it. I completely friggin loved it. And I’m so surprised everytime I hear/read that someone didn’t. She’s telling a story. Not only with music, dance & lyrics, but with a character too. You get a bigger picture. You get theater. Isn’t that cool? You don’t have to like Jo Calderone. He’s a character! Stop being so uptight and just be entertained. Funny how people freak out when a woman goes drag. I personally think Jo is hot. Anytime Mr. Calderone 😉

I also think it’s silly when people say “she has such a good voice, she doesn’t need to…”
Really?? She’s not just a singer. It’s that simple.

    ***Angelina, I agree with you 100 %

  112. ana says:

gaga is talented wether ya’ll like it or not. She did an amazing job @ vma like what other celebs are tweeting. Ya’ll just can’t take a little joke. 😉

  113. VeneficA Delirium says:

    Are you people joking?

@Ana: I’ve been hearing the same tired defenses of Gaga for the past three years, and they are just that: tiring. It’s all satire, that she’s entitled to act the way she does because apparently people have never been exposed to a moderately talented pop singer/she’s a savant/rocket scientist and that “you can’t deny she’s the greatest singer evar!1!!1!!” , and that “NOBODY’S REALLY ORIGINAL EVEN THOUGH WE WERE CLAIMING SHE WAS UNTIL NOT EVEN HER MOST OBNOXIOUS FANS COULD DEFEND IT ANYMORE!!!!!!!!!!”.

And, between those three arguments, they’ve all been completely counterproductive toward changing my opinion toward Gaga. They make me like her less.

@Jess: Who are you, Gaga? “She’s not just a singer”? That kind of aggrandizement sounds like something that would only come out of Gaga’s mouth herself. Not even the insufferable masses of intolerant “little monsters” she maligns with her meaningless corporately-groomed “rebellion”, empty rehearsed rhetoric, and self-importance would admit to thinking of her as more than an entertainer. Keyword: Admit. Her “little monsters” are still rather gullible for such high minded intellectuals they want to convince the rest of the world that they are.

    @Flan: That’s nice.

I find her “general weirdness” a manufactured, revamped, repackaging of parts of other artists who, despite being theatrical, still manage to give a shit about their music rather than exploiting their fans and selling themselves out. If Gaga was truly an artist, she would focus more on the intrinsic value of said “art” rather than monetary value. But, she doesn’t. The truth is, she comes across as me as a social climber who’d sacrifice anyone or anything of any kind of worth to her if it guaranteed more fame and spectacle. SHE’D RATHER BE POPULAR. SHE HAS TO BE A SUPAH-STAHHHH.

That she’s genuinely strange has been refuted so many times I can’t believe that people are still willing to believe it.

As for her general behavior, that’s nice. Arrogance, delusion, and histrionic behavior may be your thing but it isn’t mine.

Also, you’ll have to excuse me because I don’t know my way around Gaga’s songs, but every song I’ve heard of hers that is played on the radio sounds to me like it’s about the same shit Rihanna and Britney Spears sing about. It’s just even worse, because Gaga’s hits are vacuous but people actually believe they’re meaningful. The most groundbreaking and relevant song I’ve heard by her was “Born This Way”, which speaks volumes because it’s hardly groundbreaking. So, she wrote a song about gay rights. It isn’t the first time and it sure isn’t the last either. Lyrically, she’s hardly “risky” at all.

If I may “GAGA” someone’s comment on here, and agree it really sounds like she picked up a thesaurus for words with grandiose “secret” meanings and innuendos, and then improvised that word stew into her song lyrics. Not impressed.

I’ll take a busload of crotch-flashing Britney’s and wig-wielding Katy’s before one Gag because even though I can’t listen to a full song of theirs, I can tolerate watching them because they don’t buy their own hype. At least they know what THEY are.

And man, Gaga fans on here sure are condescending, aren’t they? Us non-fans can handle your opinion just fine, thank you. Your smugness is only pushing us further away from your self-infatuated demigod.

Truthfully, we “haters” and Gaga share a mutually beneficial relationship. We get to laugh at her, and she gets to passive aggressively make references to our responses in music videos, pretending it doesn’t bother her.
