Giuliana Rancic & husband record video to their future “embryo”: sweet or weird?

The final episode of the fourth season of Giuliana Rancic and her hapless husband Bill’s reality show aired last night. Now that I’m staying in the US I feel guilty for not watching every stupid show that’s out there, but I guess in this case I can skip it, having seen the show enough to get a decent read on their personalities. Giuliana is superficial and self obsessed while Bill is supportive and trying to do his best in his marriage. Admittedly I didn’t get as strong an impression of Bill, but he comes across as a decent guy. (You can watch clips on MyStyle.com)

The Daily Mail has details of the season closer, where Giuliana and Bill undergo a third round of IVF treatments, the first two being unsuccessful. They’ve been filmed during previous IVF treatments on their show, and have been open about the pain and disappointment they experienced from one unsuccessful treatment and an another that resulted in a miscarriage at eight weeks. After that they decided to take a year off from trying to conceive, having started the process in early 2009. Giuliana has been very defensive about the fact that she refused to follow her doctor’s orders to gain weight in order to increase her chances of conception. On this episode, she discussed her fear of undergoing another round of IVF after her time off, and recorded a video with Bill to their potential future child. It sounds kind of cheesy to me, especially when they call him/her a “beautiful embryo,” but I get the sentiment.

Ahead of the procedure Giuliana, 36, is seen clearly anxious and nearly backs out at the last minute, while the couple chat anxiously in the car park.

‘I’m nervous as hell,’ she tells Bill. ‘Is it too late to turn around?’

Giuliana, who once underwent a whopping 63 IVF shots a month, certainly has cause for concern.

The last time she underwent IVF she suffered extreme sickness.

But as she reveals her fears to her husband, Bill encourages his wife, reminding her that back then she was in bad shape, and this time around things are a lot better.

‘The last time we did this, at this stage, you were a lot more uncomfortable You couldn’t even walk and were in a lot of pain,’ he said.

‘Now you could run laps. We did it the right way.’

Confident that their third time will be a charm, the pair record a video message for their future child.

‘Future baby boy or girl: Today is the day we go in to conceive you,’ Giuliana says.

‘You are a follicle right now, and hopefully all will go well and you will become a beautiful embryo and then a baby.’
The couple’s second visit to the medical center comes after they were seen meeting with Dr Schoolcraft for the first time in last week’s episode.

There, they discussed the last failed round of IVF after Guiliana sadly suffered a miscarriage last year.

‘They told us they were A + eggs so we thought it was a no brainer,’ Bill tells the doctor.

However, the couple are offered renewed hope by Schoolcraft for another round of treatment.

‘Dr Schoolcraft is very optimistic about our chances which I think is a breath of fresh air,’ Bill said in the clip.

‘We haven’t had this much hope in a long time, so this is very, very nice,’ added Giulliana.

Bill even started to think about what could happen if the couple conceive.

‘I’d love to have twins,’ he told the doctor, who agrees that two babies is a definite possibility.

However Giuliana was keen to have even more babies.

‘Even if we have twins, we’re having more kids,’ she laughed. ‘We’re going to need a frequent IVF-er card.’

Back in July, Bill told Us Weekly magazine how they would be looking at ‘all options when it comes to children, whether it’s surrogacy or adoption.’

‘We’re going to keep trying ourselves, but if it doesn’t work out, there are so many other great alternatives. We’re open to everything,’ added Giuliana.

[From The Daily Mail]

You know that Giuliana was nervous about IVF because of the weight gain, not because of how it would make her feel. That may sound harsh, but read what this woman has said about her weight in the past. She’s obsessed with her body image to an unhealthy degree. She doesn’t seem to mind feeling hungry constantly, she’s just concerned with looking anything more than skeletal. I do hope that she’s able to get pregnant and carry a healthy baby to term, like her idols Rachel Zoe and Posh. Then we’ll be treated to baby photos and baby anecdotes and “how I lost the baby weight fast!” articles on her website. She’ll be one of those know-it-all moms who tells everyone else how to raise their kids, just wait.

    Have they considered surrogacy?

  2. Samigirl says:

If you REALLY want to have a baby, you follow your doctors rules. If he says gain weight, you do it. The fact that she won’t pisses me off.

  3. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

If they really love children, why not adopt, there are many kids waiting.

  4. dorothy says:

Their entire celebrity has been based upon getting pregnant. This video is just weird. Enough already. Just adopt or shut up about it. Alot of people are trying to get pregnant, but don’t update constantly about it to the world. They have taken what is a personal, private and painful process and made a spectacle out of it. I can only imagine what will happen when they get pregnant. How will that childs life be in the spotlight?

  5. Bermuda Blues says:

IVF doesn’t work for everyone. I imagine that this sort of pressure on the marriage + the TV show = Massive disappointment. I give these two 18 months til divorce.

  6. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Did a doctor really tell her to gain weight or did people just decide she was too skinny and she should gain weight to have baby? I am genuinely confused.

  7. Heatheradair says:

I’ve said this before: if you’re more concerned with how YOU look than how healthy of an environment you’re creating for your unborn kiddo, then your head’s in the wrong place to be a parent anyway. Create a hospitable home for your baby (meaning, sweetie pie, do as your doctor says).

    Period.

Vain narcissists are, perhaps, not the best parents…..

  8. cr says:

LOVE ANGELINA: there’s a link in this post to where she mentioned she was told to gain 10 lbs, but would only gain 5.

  9. tapioca says:

“If you REALLY want to have a baby, you follow your doctors rules.”

    ^^^This exactly!

In the UK you can get 1-3 rounds of FREE IVF on our National Health Service and women still bitch about being denied treatment if they’re obese/underweight or they smoke – all of which drastically reduces your chances of having a child – because they’re just not willing to make the lifestyle change. If I was that desperate for a child and gnawing my own foot off at the ankle would help me conceive I’d do it in a heartbeat. If you won’t gain 5-10 measly pounds for your baby, then you shouldn’t be having one!

@LA: Her doctor told her to put on 10lbs – she put on 5, then had a “I’m a fat pig” freakout and lost them again.

  10. Celebitchy says:

@LoveAngelina – yes, the doctor told her to gain 10 pounds and she said on The View that she’d gained 5 and considered it enough.

  11. SueAnn says:

I get a gay vibe from him in these pics. I have never seen him on a show or anything, but the pics look kinda of gay to me.

  12. LadyJane says:

Anyone else born in the late 70s? Guiliana Rici looks just like Ginny Oritz from 3-2-1 Contact! (Including the styling)

  13. Original Tiffany says:

Maybe they can’t get pregnant because it’s impossible for a human and a praying mantis to mate?

What if she blows up while she is preggo? I’d love it.

  14. Larissa says:

I think the doctor had very specific medical reasons to tell her to gain weight, not just because of her actual weight, she is delusional enough to think that just because people who are the same weight “range” as her conceived that she will not have problem doing it if they try hard (meaning endless IVFs). If not even the miscarriage made her “aware” enough , then nothing will!!!! They said they would adopt or have a surrogate , but she is dying to get PREGNANT more than having a baby/child at this point, and I dont blame her for not wanting to skip this phase, I loved being pregnant and it is an experience I have always wanted to go through, but they should kept it more private because famewhoring your TTC is just a new kind of low.

  15. Julie says:

This woman is just downright ugly. No way around it. Maybe if she gained wait and cut off that hair, giving it a style, it might help.

  16. Christine says:

I struggled for years to have children. She makes a mockery of it. She’s not doing it to spread awareness – she’s doing it to stay famous. It’s gross, especially when she has the money to adopt, do IVF, do surrogacy. And yet they make these ridiculous videos to an embryo – instead of actually following her doctors orders. And they film it and let it drag on for years – just for the stupid show. It’s contemptible. Truly, if they weren’t having fertility issues, what would this asinine show be about? Her eating disorder?

  17. inthekitchen says:

It’s pathetic that she says “beautiful embryo” instead of HEALTHY embryo (that won’t abort itself). I guess she could have meant that but interesting to me how she didn’t say anything about a healthy embryo.

I also think it’s hilarious how she has her head craned to the same side in every picture. Sorry, bag o’ bones, you don’t have a good side!

  18. Samigirl says:

@original tiffany, that just made me LOL so hard. At my desk. In the quiet office. Hysterical. I cosign with everyone who said adoption. I’m adopted, and my father will tell you that I am his daughter…blood doesn’t matter. He said he never knew god’s purpose for him on this earth until he met me. Makes me tear up every time. I plan on adopting at some point in my life. It’s a beautiful thing πŸ™‚ There are tons of children here in the United States alone that need to be adopted. I know everyone wants a little baby, but I see no harm in taking in a 3 or 4 year old that’s already potty trained! That’s what I’d like to do πŸ™‚

  19. Katyusha says:

What’s wrong with her hair? She’s got beautiful hair.

  20. Little says:

My road to pregnancy has a lot of similarities with G’s. I am 5’8″ and was 115lbs. I was also a division 1 athlete and continued to do hardcore workouts after college. I am now pregnant after three years, 3 miscarriages and countless IUI’s. But I listened to my doctors. I put on 10 pounds and cut out running 50 miles a week. I feel so bad for their infertility issues, but she truly is bringing it on herself. I ignored my weight at first too. Once I followed doctor’s orders, everything fell into place.

  21. Original Tiffany says:

I can’t help it, every time I see her “praying mantis” pops into my head. I could see her tearing off his head and eating it after she gets pregnant. We found a pink one in Toronto a few weeks ago.
Was she in town for the TIFF or just a coincidence?
Please apologize to the boss for me:)

  22. Firecracker says:

I saw an ad for the show (never watched it, never will). The future baby shit. It was so over the top that I wanted to smack her.

  23. Denise says:

Another pair whose 15 minutes were up a long time ago; yawn…..

  24. TG says:

I am one of the few people who like her even if she does look like a praying mantis. I guess I like animals since my favorite celebs seem to look like them (G the praying mantis, SJP the horse face, etc.) I like their show. Bill seems like a nice guy and they seem to love each other. Not sure why anyone wants to hear them speak though about entrepreneur (same with Bruce Jenner, why would he inspire me to get my sales up?). If you are a true entrepreneur you do not need to be inspired by someone else telling you about it. You would be out there doing it not sitting inside hearing about it. I loved her in that orange dress pre-red carpet at the Emmy’s. Yes it is sad she refused to gain weight. I wonder that her husband isn’t upset with her about that. Also, when was this episode filmed? Does that mean this 3rd round of IVF didn’t work? I hope the best for them I feel bad for almost anyone who can’t have a child who wants one. Obviously Khate should never have been allowed to have children or octomom for that matter.

  25. Cali says:

I’m over looking at his teeth and her bones. And being that thin really does not work for her at all.

  26. erica says:

are you guys serious? this couple truly loves one another, wants to have a baby together and have gone through so much — yet they still put themselves out there and let us scrutinize their every move just so we can make ridiculous judgments about how vain and superficial and defective they are. What’s saddest of all here is how crossing your fingers for them or wishing them the best or even just feeling a little empathy for them couldn’t be the furthest thing from most of your minds.

  27. Callumna says:

They have a lot in common. When they smile each has that big inner glow of self-love.

  28. Original Tiffany says:

Hey Erica, yep we are serious. The site’s name is Celebitchy and we put our hearts and souls into snarkiness.
If you have a reality show (period, really)and you live your life to be a famewhore, yes you deserve the bitchy snark.
If I wanted everyone to pick me apart and laugh, I’d have one too, but I like a normal life with privacy. I’d gain ten fucking pounds on the advice of my doc instead of blowing him off because my wardrobe won’t look good on TV.

OH, for you animal loving SJP fans, ever visited sarahjessicaparkerlookslikeahorse.com?
Hilarity ensues, though my horses have prettier faces than her.
If you live your life on reality TV, you are fodder for us regular bitches. Please name me some non-fucked up reality stars? Snooki? Montag? KimK? Lohans? O’Neals? Shall I keep the list going?

    So yeah, praying mantis!

  29. F5 says:

She’s annoying to no end.. I guess they’re both just disgusting fame*ores.
Only 2 narcissists can do something so private in front of the cameras.Gross

  30. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Oh thanks guys. I was totally under a whole another impression about G. I think if she really wanted the baby she would just gain the little weight and then lose it when she had the baby. Thats just odd she would go against the doctor. Its really sad its like she is having all these miscarriages for no reason.

  31. Patricia says:

I read her food/diet blog a few months ago and it was pretty distressing.

I honestly don’t think she’s ready to be a parent until she does a little work on herself and her food/control/self image issues.

  32. Snowbunny says:

If she won’t gain weight to get pregnant, how does she expect to have a healthy baby? Even if she gets pregnant and manages to carry the baby to term, what complications will the baby have from lack of nutrition due to her constant monitoring of her weight.

  33. Ana says:

I don’t know if what I am going to say it’s due to my nature, which always wants to see the best in other people…with big exceptions, Kim K for example.

But I sort of understand her, at times I feel the need to look good, imagine a woman who has to look her best for the cameras and is surrounded by beautiful, fit celebrities…Maybe she does care and really wants a baby, but struggles to balance that and her career “demands”.

    Just what I think…

  34. Kelly says:

I can’t believe their show made it past the first season, they’re both obnoxious

  35. JaneWonderfalls says:

Weird because I thought she had problems getting pregnant. Plus “breeders” even potential one’s mostly are just weird to me. No I will not stop saying breeders until people stop complaining about a person using the term. It is annoying to be corrected by people, who are on a celebrity gossip site.

  36. sally says:

This is ridiculous. The Dr. said gain 10 lbs, not amputate your leg. It’s reversible. If you truly want a kid you shouldn’t be such a self obsessed twat.

  37. J Katz says:

If being emaciated is more important than getting pregnant, then nature is making its natural selection. 20 lbs = instant pregnancy, like the rest of the healthy women who get pregnant every day. If they’re a good couple, they’ll survive her choice.

  38. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I just don’t–where’s the baby going to live? Maybe start with the psychologist. I don’t want to sound mean but, this silly cow’s a bit confused. Maybe she isn’t receiving signals to have a baby, maybe the difficulties are to show her that she must put her health first, because I’m guessing that every other being in the whole of history didn’t cultivate mass while pregnant because there’s an endemic ‘lazy and grossified’ atmosphere surrounding birth. Biological vanity bestows the want of a ‘natural and genetically compatible’ to join the family, but that’s the very thing that takes the ability away in this case. See a shrink, sort yourself out, abandon the teef. Is it true that she has infertility issues, or is the whole ‘issue’ nothing more than the ravages of an eating disorder?

  39. jane says:

I did IVF twice. I lost weight before the first IVF. Doctor never told me to lose weight; I just knew I wasn’t healthy. As soon as I almost went back to my ideal size 2, I got pregnant and I am back to size 10. πŸ™ Along with that, I lost 50% of my hair, and my skin has never looked so bad before. Physically, I think I look horrible and it affects my self esteem, but I would do it all over again because I have the most beautiful baby ever! πŸ™‚

  40. Hay-soos says:

    Anyone notice any resemblance?

  41. It is ME!! says:

    @Samigirl: THANK YOU! EXACTLY!

  42. meg says:

I think G is really funny and I love her personality. However, I think she is delusional about pregnancy. She wants a baby but won’t heed her doctor’s advice. They say they want a family, but can’t even seem to decide where to live. They are constantly buying houses and selling them. They can’t seem to settle on a permanent home.

He is in LA, but wants to be in Chicago. He is always whining, whining about Chicago. She wants a baby but wants to be thin for her sample size clothing. I can understand why the baby thing isn’t working. They are all over the map. Too many balls in the air, their situation is a c-f. Settle down, find a common home, and the baby will come.
