Giuliana Rancic: Rachel Zoe and Posh are also super skinny and they got pregnant

wenn3169739
I originally wanted to title this story: “Rachel Zoe is Giuliana Rancic’s pregnant thinspiration,” but that’s too controversial and not necessarily accurate. E! correspondent Giuliana has spoken about her pregnancy loss and covered her infertility battle and on her reality show with her husband, Bill Rancic. Last March, Giuliana was offended when Whoopi Goldberg said on The View that if she wanted to get pregnant she should follow her doctor’s orders to gain weight. Giuliana said back then that her doctor told her to gain at least 10 pounds, that she’d gained five, and that she didn’t want to gain more because she worked in an image-focused industry. Whoopi called her on it the next day, and Giuliana was pissed off.

Now Giuliana is continuing to hit back at critics who note that her thinness might be contributing to her infertility. She says that there are plenty of very thin women who conceive, like Victoria Beckham, Gisele Bundchen and Rachel Zoe, and that comments about her weight are hurtful:

Giuliana Rancic blamed herself when she suffered a miscarriage and tells RadarOnline.com that speculation her weight contributed to it is simply mean spirited and wrong.

In an emotional and exclusive new interview about her public and well-documented struggle to have a baby with husband Bill, she reveals the couple is taking a break from IVF and will consider adopting.

The TV host, 36, had a miscarriage last year and told RadarOnline.com: “As a woman you blame your body, you blame yourself, and I was riding that wave for a while and I was playing the blame game.

“Not for anything I was doing day to day, but (I wondered): Should Bill have married someone younger? Did I wait too long? Should I have had kids at a younger age?

“But that’s not what God wanted. The fact that I really do feel happier than I’ve felt in years, I feel like it really was part of a bigger plan, and I don’t know what that plan is but whatever it is, we’re fine with it.”

And when it comes to speculation that Giuliana is too thin to get pregnant, she scoffs and calls that talk “ignorant”, telling RadarOnline.com: “Look at Kelly Ripa! She’s half my size and has no body fat and has kids.

“Giselle (Bundchen) is a supermodel, and I’ve pinched her in real life just to see if she has body fat — zero body fat! Look at Victoria Beckham, she’s on her fourth child.

“It’s unbelievable to me the amount of ignorant comments that come in and it’s just uninformed ignorant people. Rachel Zoe is pregnant! To all the haters, get informed! Go Google it…it has nothing to do with anything.

“There are thin girls with infertility issues, normal sized girls with infertility issues and overweight girls with infertility issues. Unless your doctor tells you your weight is affecting you in some way…once the doctor rules it out, that’s really not it.”

Giuliana told RadarOnline.com that she and Bill are taking a break from the grueling schedule of IVF treatments they have been undergoing, choosing instead to focus on each other and their relationship.

[From Radar]

Giuliana said that she and Bill are open to adoption, but it doesn’t sound like they’ve started the process. I wish them the best, and it sounds absolutely heartbreaking to have to go through those treatments only to suffer a miscarriage. On the other hand, maybe she should stop rallying against people who say she’s too thin and just ignore it. She’s only encouraging more people to point out how tiny she is. I agree with her that it might not have anything to do with her fertility issues, but by making those issues so public of course she’s going to be criticized for her weight. She even admitted that she wasn’t willing to gain as much weight as her doctor told her to.

Giuliana and Bill are spokespeople for Fertility Lifelines, which encourages couples to get fertility treatments if they’re under 35 and have tried for a year or over 35 and have tried for six months. It’s sponsored by Merck, which has a ton of fertility drugs, so they probably got paid well for it.

Giuliana and Bill are shown on New Year’s and on 10/16/10. She is also shown on 1/16/11. Credit: WENN

    First off, I LOVE her dress, gorgeous!
    Second, am I going crazy, or did we actually see her doctor on national television tell her she should gain 10 lbs? It definitely would not hurt to gain a little extra weight if she is underweight. Vigorous exercise has been proven to be detrimental to the body and from what I have seen, the girl works out like crazy!

  2. mln76 says:

    If her doctor told her to gain 10 lbs and she refused then I have no interest in hearing about her struggles with infertility. It’s totally on her.If she is desperate for a child she should try gaining the other 5 lbs that may not be the reason but it’s worth a try. And thin woman can conceive but they may not be underweight for their own body type.

  3. Tess says:

    I’m embarrassed to admit watching a few episodes of their show.

    She is a whirlwind of selfish, self absorbed energy.

    Both are palpably hungry for fame. A very unattractive couple.

  4. brin says:

    Yeah, I feel bad for them, they want to have a baby so much. I wish them well, whether they keep trying to have one or adopt.

  5. Roma says:

    One of my girlfriends is older and struggling with infertility. She is the fittest woman I know and though we push, we tell her to put a little weight on but she’s absolutely against it. The thought of getting pudgy overwhelms her.

    I should also point out that she is an OB-GYN at a major hospital. So she knows. After two years I know it’s bad but my sympathy for her situation has lessened.

  6. sickofit says:

    this is just sick. fertility treatment is no fun at all, how can she advertise it and speak against eating a little bit more? Btw even fertility treatment works better with some meat and body fat.

  7. KLO says:

    She looks 15 years older because she’s so damn thin. I once saw her “daily menu” or something that she had given to a magazine. It was all cooking spray and chicken breast. And protein bars and crap like that (no fat anywhere) Eat a few eggs and some butter, woman!
    And she must have some kind of eating disorder if not gaining another 5 pounds is more important to her than having a baby. And then she says she works in media so she can’t be fat. Don’t work anymore, then, until you get pregnant! She should have the money to not work for a year.
    It’s all just excuses, excuses for her. None of them hold water either.
    And maybe deep down she doesn’t even want the baby but her mother/husband wants it and she doesn’t have the guts to say no because she’s afraid of losing their love/approval.

  8. EdithP says:

    If she won’t gain 5 lbs to see if it works, then I don’t think she wants a baby that bad. She’s going to have to gain weight if she does get pregnant, anyway.

  9. JustBored says:

    If she is so worried about weight gain, wait until she gets pregnant.

    That makes no sense to me, why not put on the recommended 10lbs if the doctors think it will help her get pregnant?

    Seems strange but its sounding like if she finally got pregnant she may be one of those…what’s the word? “Pregnorexic” women.

    Just adopt and get over it, so selfish.

  10. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

    Weight does, most certainly, affect fertility. As someone who has struggled with infertility, I can say this for sure. After trying to conceive for months, I was told by my reproductive endocrinologist to gain at least 15 lbs. After doing so, I became pregnant the next cycle. This time around, my second pregnancy, it happened on the first cycle because I kept 10 of those 15 lbs. Similarly, my cousin (who is classified obease) lost 50 lbs and was able to carry twins. As @min76 said, if you start out having no fertility issues weight may not affect your fertility as it does those of us with fertility issues.

  11. janie says:

    i dont even want to hear it from her. a naturally thin woman with infertility issues is different from someone who starves their body. she gained 5 lbs and then freaked out and went on a cleanse.
    in every episode she is eating egg whites.she needs to gain at least 10 lbs and keep it that way for a year, not 3 weeks.
    and why not error on the side of caution anyway?

  12. Ari says:

    Giselle is a bad example – she is very athletic and definitely not a bone IMHO.

    Rachel Zoe – that was some witchery right there by her husband, maybe he is a warlock *shrug*

    Posh!? Seriously!? the chick had THREE kids [on #4] she is obviously very fertile despite her weight.

    This woman needs to gain the necessary weight and shut the f up because everyone is different.

  13. jen says:

    Why the hell would anyone take fertility advice from Whoopie?

  14. Crash2GO2 says:

    Infertility is a multifaceted issue, and anything you can do to increase your chances of getting pregnant, if you are really serious about getting pregnant, should be done including putting on weight. She is quite stupid.

  15. The_Porscha says:

    First of all, it annoys me to no end when people compare their singular health situations to other people they perceive to be similar. Just because another woman is small doesn’t mean that the same things are going on inside. Medically, we’re all different. It makes no sense to say “Kelly Ripa got pregnant!” when you have no idea what KR’s medical history is.

    Furthermore, I think it says a lot about what type of mother she’ll be if the doctor tells her, on national television, to gain ten pounds and she only concedes to gain five. For the supposed miracle of birth that she wants so much. If she really wanted to give birth THAT much, she’d gain the weight and then go back and lose it. I just do not understand how we’re supposed to nod along and agree with her when most of what she says is pretty medically unsound, or downright crazy. Give me a break. I’ll give her a pass on her weight vs. fertility issues when she stops bringing it up.

  16. Kim says:

    Hmmm… part of me thinks she must like going to the doctor and having him or her say, “You’re just too thin!” In a messed up way, that’s probably very validating to her.

  17. guesty says:

    @Jen..lol! So true.

    Guiliana seems like she’s really sweet…wish her the best.

  18. explain third world says:

    Women in Africa & Asia who have very little food, much less body fat, get pregnant all the time. You would think that people with no food and living in war torn environments would be super stressed out, but it seems people in the who have $$$$ for IVF, etc. are even more stressed out. Stress, as nebulous as that can be, causes alot of health problems, Inc. fertility issues. Taking the stigma/difficulties from adoption would be a good solution, too.

  19. lucy2 says:

    Her doctor DID tell her, and she didn’t do it! And she could use the 10 lbs anyway, she is really skinny – and she wasn’t always THAT skinny, so you know it’s not natural. I think that’s really telling about her priorities and goals.
    If they’re paid spokespeople for a fertility program, I wonder how seriously they’re considering other options like adoption.

  20. TeeTee says:

    she has a problem w/her weight, she is manic about it and those extensions.

    her first mistake was putting it all on tv. her husband really wants a child, her I can’t really make it out. a lot of it has to do with environment and stress, she LOVES her job and so be it.

  21. Shay says:

    Who cares? Really. It’s going to be their kid. Not ours. Meh. Thus pseudo humanitarian take, whether they’re having fertility treatment/surrogates/etc. There are worse things in the world. If the child grows up screwed, then it won’t be the fertility treatment, it’ll be the parents.

  22. RhymesWithSilver says:

    This is so silly. My grandmother had to lose 25 lbs. before she had my mom, and my cousin had to put away her egg whites and gain 10 to get pregnant. Everyone’s hormones are different, and weight ABSOLUTELY affects your fertility. Giuliana has some nerve calling the medical establishment ignorant when she’s too stubborn and image-focused to get herself to a normal weight (she’s probably underweight now). Did anyone tell her what will happen to her body when she actually gets pregnant/has an infant to care for?

  23. CallieTrichid says:

    If she’s so hellbent on having a biological child, why not go with a surrogate? No shame there.

    I mean, if we’re going to throw out names, Giuliana, it worked for Nicole Kidman and Sarah Jessica Parker.

    I get that she probably wants to experience pregnancy, blah blah blah–but uh, like some of you guys have pointed out, she’d be gaining the weight anyways so she might as well.

  24. mariangela says:

    I have watched her show and saw her diet and it made me like a whole lot less. No one is asking her to gain 50 pounds but if gaining 5 more pounds is so difficult for her then maybe it’s best if she has no children AT ALL. If you can’t prioritise and decide which is more important between being super skinny and having a child then you don’t deserve to have children. She should gain weight for the health of any baby she has, no child deserves to be taught that image is more important than being healthy.

    It’s a pity because I used to like her so much. I also loved Bill but through the show and their behaviour about this pregnancy, I’m liking them less.

    And to compare yourself to other people is plain stupid. How does she know how they ate or even got pregnant. Maybe they increased their calories, maybe they exercised less.

    I can’t understand her thought process. I’m a bit on the skinny side and if someone said to me I had to gain 10 pounds so as to fall pregnant, I would gain 15 pounds just to help my chances.

    She doesn’t want a baby. She has an eating disorder. And she is so tanned, she looks orange. And she is so super skinny.

    Conclusion : she is gross all round, both in body and mind. Don’t have children. No one deserves a messed up mom like you.

    I’m sorry if I sound harsh but it infuriates me when people won’t even try something to get better. Gain the weight Giuliana and then complain about how infertile you are and how it is not what God wanted.

  26. Mizz Tickles says:

    When I saw this article it brings to mind a comment from a poster about her husbands daughter who is very small and has learning problems because the ex-wife was having such severe bulemia,anorexia during the pregnancy.

    She and Bill are focused on their careers, so maybe their lives (and her body) don’t have room for a child. Billiana could be pulling a Speidi – the baby thing is maybe all for show and bumps are all the rage in media society.

    Bill gives off douche vibes and Guiliana would look so much prettier and younger with about twenty pounds on her.

  27. orion70 says:

    @The_Porscha… so true. For starters, Posh evidently has PCOS, so different issues there. And maybe it’s just me, but I don’t remember Kelly Ripa being as thin as she is now in earlier years.

    Can’t say I really understand her comment about “unless your doctor rules it out”, when it sounds like her dr told her to gain weight. Maybe I skimmed too much.

    I will say that some doctors blame a lot of things on weight or lack thereof, that aren’t necessarily linked.

  28. Courtney says:

    Um Guiliana isn’t famous she just interviews them for her job. some women that are naturally skinny still have issues getting/staying pregnant Posh is an example she has PCOS so has to take medication everytime she’s thinking about trying to have a baby or pregnant so she doesn’t miscarry. Sophia Loren is another example but she was skinny because she grew up in war torn italy had 2 miscarriages that nearly killed her before having to be on complete bedrest for the pregnancies that yielded her sons Carlo Jr & Edoardo. Maybe Guiliana and Bill aren’t meant to have children

  29. JenJen says:

    @JustBored- My thoughts exactly!

  30. Hautie says:

    “Rachel Zoe – that was some witchery right there by her husband, maybe he is a warlock *shrug*”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    hahahahaha!
    I have said the same thing. Someone is a friggin witch in that family, for her to have gotten pregnant.
    And I am not convinced that she isn’t having herself a (super tiny) pillow baby.
  31. TXCinderella says:
    She definitely has weight issues and it sounds like she is anorexic, but hides it well. What does she think is going to happen to her body when the baby starts growing inside of her? Does she think she is going to stay a size 0? Also, I’d be concerned that the baby would not get the nutrition it needs if she has a problem eating.
  32. DGO says:
    If she’s not willing to gain 10 lbs. in order to potentially conceive, how would she be willing to gain the necessary 20-25 lbs. to maintain a healthy pregnancy?
  33. Majosha says:
    Good Lord, she acts like the doc requested that she eat herself into the quadruple digits. It’s just FIVE pounds, ffs. She needs a serious dose of perspective.
  34. MorticiansDoItDeader says:
    Just because someone has a diagnosis of PCOS doesn’t make it any easier for them to become pregnant. As @crash said, infertility is a multifaceted issue. I didn’t have the insulin resistance issues that some PCOS sufferers have and was underweight. My PCOS is considered mild, and it seems as though Posh’s is too. So, like @orion70 said, for Guiliana to compare herself to someone with a diagnosed (seemingly mild) fertility issue is absurd when she has unexplained infertility.
  35. Rio says:
    Her head scares me. It’s like an alien skull cartoon…thing.
    OH yeah, Rio is on TOP of descriptive phrasing this morning…
  36. esblondie says:
    If you’re afraid of “getting pudgy” or putting a few pounds on, maybe you shouldn’t get pregnant, and leave it to the women who don’t give two shits what happens to their body appearance-wise as long as they have a healthy child?!
    Seems logical to me…
  37. Chicoulina says:
    She is sooo ugly,no one cares about her body if she has a face like that!
  38. photo jojo says:
    Weight actually does have a lot to do with fertility – women who are severely underweight OR overweight can have problems. Your nutritional status has a lot to do with how all your bodily systems function.
  39. Sara says:
    I think Julianna still dreams of becoming a model!
  40. ra says:
    Is she naturally skinny or is she starving herself to be skinny like this?
    I saw her sister on the show and she’s skinny just like her.
    If Giuliana is naturally skinny then she can’t gain more weight even if she wants to, so don’t blame her for that.
  41. Lemon Drops says:
    Sure, it worked for them to be super skinny, but she looks emaciated now compared to how she looked in 2008. Obviously she’s harming herself and harming her chances of getting pregnant.
  42. Sara says:
    @ra, If she was naturally skinny, then I don’t think she would have to have such a strict diet, she could eat eggs instead of just egg whites. She needs to eat more good fats!
  43. kazoo says:
    i’m confused. if she doesn’t want to gain the 10 lbs her doctor recommended, how is she going to deal with weight gain during pregnancy?
  44. sarah says:
    She doesn’t really want a baby because like someone else said, if she did, she would have gained more than pounds when her doctor recommended it. My sister in law has struggled with fertility. She says that she never knows when she’s ovulating because of irregular periods. I asked her why she didn’t just have sex every other day for a few months and she said “don’t tell my husband that!” Um… if it was important to you, you would.
  45. cprincess says:
    Im surprised that nonody has commented on the fact that there is something called “Fertility Lifelines” sponsored by surprise surprise Merck -a drug company!
    Of course a drug compnay cant wait to tell us that if you dont get pregnant asap then start pumping yourself full of drugs that they manufacture!
    Pretty soon American women will start believing that its impossible to get get pregnant naturally no matter what your age.
    As regards her-yes Ive had a miscarriage and you do blame yourself but my doctor told me that its nothing I did or didnt do,its just happens…an astonishing amount of women have had a miscarriage….
    A friend of mine in England has had three second term miscarriages-the last one at 6 months-I honestly do not know how she endured it…in between them she went through various proceedures to increase her chances to carry to term… the greatest thing is that she just finally gave birth on December 26th to a full term baby boy.
    It does seem incredibly narcissistic of Guliana Rancic to not follow her doctors reccommendation-I mean we’re talking about 5llb here!
  46. original kate says:
    she looks like a stick insect.
  47. ra says:
    @42 Sara
    Well, I don’t know what exactly she eats, don’t know if she’s on a diet or not, I was saying that because naturally skinny girls are eating everything without exercising and they don’t gain more weight than they already have, it’s just impossible, it’s genes.
    Only ppl who are naturally fat on a diet are able to gain weight.
  48. Kasey says:
    I’ve never heard of this woman before. I sympathize with desiring something that seems out of your grasp but it stops there.
    She is in a position where there may be something she can do to actually change her situation. She refuses b/c she doesn’t want to mar her professional image. Looking at her I’m not thinking 5 pounds will make much of a change to her physical appearance. Personally I like a little meat on the body so I think any thing extra can only help her look less destitute……
    Anyway, its clear to me that either 1-she doesn’t want a baby that badly and may be happy for this “not gaining weight for her image excuse” that’s possibly keeping her from being pregnant (ridiculous!), 2-she is using the “not gaining weight for her image excuse” because she is afraid to get pregnant and go through a possible miscarriage again (in that case, sad) or 3-she has a mental disconnect and isn’t getting that being pregnant means she is going to gain at least 5 pounds of weight anyway (ridiculous AND sad!).
  49. Bodhi says:
    What I don’t get is why she is refusing to gain the weight that her doc told her too. If she really, really wants to carry a child, then she needs to listen to the medical professionals. Besides, doesn’t she know what happens when a woman gets pregnant? They gain weight! DUH!
  50. Gary says:
    Two incredible narcissists. How about just keeping private what ought to be private.
  51. Sara says:
    @ra,
    I guess you don’t watch her show then? I have and she eats and strict diet and exercises pretty hard core. She did a ten mile marathon on her show after the miscarriage!!!
  52. Bee says:
    Giuliana has said that she doesn’t want to gain weight because she needs to fit into the sample sized clothes that are provided to E. And she doesn’t have enough money to buy a new outfit to wear everyday on the show. I understand that’s her mentality. But, she’s going to have to decide if she cares more about saving money on clothes or having a kid.
  53. MNGIRL76 says:
    Well, if she wanted a baby so bad why wouldn’t she follow her doctors instructions and stop letting her own vanity get in the way. Sorry, don’t mean to be a hater, but if I RALLY wanted something (which I truly believe she does)I would do anything! Especially take the doctors advice. Whatever
  54. Laurie says:
    HER doctor told her to gain weight. Who cares about Posh or other super skinny ladies? Don’t want to gain 5-10 lbs? How would she handle pregnancy weight?! Just get a surrogate since she doesn’t appear to want the body hassles associated with pregnancy.
  55. Jasmin says:
    ra: Regardless of genetics, if you eat more than you burn you will gain weight, skinny or no. I don’t know what “naturally fat on a diet” is but you are sorely misinformed about these things.
  56. Johnny Depp's Girl says:
    Ok, I’m gonna flip this conversation a bit but Super Morbid Obese people have a hard time getting pregnant but some do!
    So, I honestly believe, IMHO that it is just how your body works and how it has to strain to get pregnant. So, too small or too big, you MAY have a problem getting pregnant. You MAY NOT. Who knows?
  57. MNGIRL76 says:
    ““Fertility Lifelines” sponsored by surprise surprise Merck -a drug company!
    Of course a drug company cant wait to tell us that if you don’t get pregnant asap then start pumping yourself full of drugs that they manufacture!”
    Soooo true! I want to try NuvaRing but I’m scared. I think it kinda seams unnatural to have a piece of plastic inserted in there. Any 1 on that? I know birth control is probably just as bad in some way, but I don’t know? I am I being paranoid?
  58. Katija says:
    Yes, some women with 4% body fat over the age of thirty-five get pregnant. Also, some people win the lottery. Others get struck by lightning.
    Even if she gains ten lbs, she is really pushing it age-wise. They should look into adoption.
  59. a says:
    I wanted to add to the comment ‘explain third world’. Very good points you make. I have worked in India and know that nutritionally a lot of people are left behind. Also, people work to live there, not live to work as I often find in Canada. This results in different types of stresses, and the way people deal with them differ as well. Sex is used as stress relief a lot – after crisis, why are birth rates so high in refugee camps? If you don’t have television and electricity, how do you entertain yourselves and feel comforted? Both nutrition and stress play a huge role in fertility and you cannot pin-point just one as the casual factor.
  60. Bodhi says:
    @ MNGIRL76- I was on NeuvaRing & I LOVED it! As far as a method of BC anyway. Its convenient & really easy. It takes a little time to get used to inserting it, but once its in there you are good to go!
  61. Kasey says:
    @ Katija for “Yes, some women with 4% body fat over the age of thirty-five get pregnant. Also, some people win the lottery. Others get struck by lightning.” LOL!
  62. MaiGirl says:
    I am so tired of this weird, unconscious belief that womens’ bodies should change to fit standards, and not the other way around. At one point, we are just going to reach critical mass in which our bodies will no longer function under these standards, which is essentially happening now. Most women need some extra fat to carry a child to term, and it cannot function without it. And it’s not like standards don’t or can’t change over time. The fashion/entertainment industry changed when it began requiring such strict adherence to small sample sizing, so guess what, it can change back. How powerful would it be for Giuliana to gain some weight to have the baby and speak out for how ridiculous it is to be expected to be so skinny, especially when trying to conceive. Lots of people would feel for her–I think she would get a lot of support.
    Giuliana’s entire line of reasoning is wrong-headed. She is simply unhealthily skinny–for her. Other people may be naturally that size, but her need to stick to such a strict diet clearly shows that her body wants to rebel. She used to be a good 15 lbs. larger when she first began working at E, and she looked so much younger and prettier–I had to read the caption at the bottom of the screen several times before I would believe it was actually her!
  63. MNGIRL76 says:
    Cool, thanks Bodhi! I hate taking the pill everyday! NuvaRing seems so much easier. No weight gain, right? Ha!
  64. EdithP says:
    She has said that she has to fit into the sample sizes that E! provides to her? So every hostess on E! is Giuliana’s size or smaller? I don’t think so, I call BS. She just wants to be that small.
  65. Majosha says:
    @MNGIRL76: I’m also on the NuvaRing and I love it. As Bodhi pointed out, once you get used to inserting it, it’s a Godsend. Can’t feel it at all. As for weight gain, I started it right after I had my second child, so I was already on the plump side, but my weight hasn’t ballooned or anything if that’s what you mean.
  66. Majosha says:
    double post
  67. Cakes says:
    MNGIRL 76- I used nuvaring for about 2 years before I got pregnant (willingly and not due to ring failure). I gotta say that I lOVED using it and I will use it after I have my baby. Its much more convenient than the pill. Its comfortable, most of the time you cant feel it. If it does come out (mine only did during sex- sorry if that TMI but its the truth) you have 3 hours to put it back in. As long as you can remember the replacement schedule youre good.
    I never had a problem with “losing” it, infections, or failures. Its easy to insert and easy to get out. I say go for it!
    Along the same lines of how weight effects pregnancy- I was a healthy weight when I got pregnant. But Ive only gained about 7 pounds and Im about 7 and a half months along. Ive had so many people say that my baby will be born small, have health problems, am I starving myself; they get pretty invasive with questions. My doc says that my baby is right on track with development and her measurements are where they need to be. So I may be a small pregnant woman but Im 100% healthy. ITA with everyone who says that if having this baby was important to her the weight gain wouldnt be a problem. If my doc said I had to gain 10 pounds by my next appointment- WOOHOO!!! In n out here I come lol! I would milk that for all it was worth because thats what I need for my baby to be healthy.
    @MNGirl76. I know nothing about the Nuvaring, but I was on the depoprovera shot for 6 years and my reproductive endocrinologist feels as though this may have caused my (and several other patients) PCOS. Depo was tested in Africa and offered to women with AIDS in exchange for the antiviral meds that help supress the virus. It was a hard and fast drug trial and it was later determined that the drug contributed to osteoporosis. Many OB/GYNs won’t recommend Depo to those who want to become pregnant in the future. Just want you to be aware that some of these newer forms of birth control may have serious side effects that we may not be aware of yet. If I had to do it over again, I would stick with the pill.
  69. Mia135 says:
    It’s the same way some women who are overweight can get pregnant, but then some are told (like my sister) that they must lose weight before they get pregnant because it is affecting their fertility.
  70. Roma says:
    MNGIRL76: I’m going to be honest. The NuvaRing is pretty awesome as you don’t have to remember to take a pill every day. It’s also perfect if you have an exclusive partner.
    I used it for over 2 years and did have a few different partners. They got used to it but each was squeamish upon their first “encounter”. If you’re single, just keep in mind that you have to have a good sense of humour.
    My new family doctor took me off of it due to the fact I used to have cervical cancer and he had concerns. Also, not a great idea if you’re a smoker. But if you have a perfectly normal hooey and no dirty habits it’s perfectly safe.
  71. MNGIRL76 says:
    Wow, interesting! Thanks everyone! My little sister took that Depo shot about 9 years ago & i swear she gained like 50lb. Obviously she went off it. That shot really scared me! I live w/my boyfriend so no issues w/different partners, so I think I will talk to my doctor & give it a try! I do have severe problems w/ cyst’s on my ovaries, so we’ll see what he says. Thanks again every1!
  72. Katija says:
    @MorticiansDoItDeader
    Just to throw in my two cents, the shot was a horrible experience for me. I absolutely ballooned and had terrible mood swings… I have never been a depressed or angry person, but in the two weeks after the shot, I was behaving like Angelina Jolie in “Girl, Interrupted.” It put me off birth control forever; I will be a condoms-only girl until after I have children and get my stuff shut off, LOL.
    I can’t believe that Africa testing thing though…WOW. That is so creepy that white doctors are still testing unsafe drugs on poor blacks. What an insane, cruel world we live in.
  73. ra says:
    @Sara
    I watch her show always but I never noticed what she eats because it’s not that interesting for me. Now I’ll be more observing because you made me curious.
    @Jasmin
    I’m naturally skinny and I know a lot of skinny ppl, not my family only, so I definitely know what I’m talking about, it’s very difficult for naturally skinny ppl to gain weight, impossible I would say. If you are skinny and your weight limit is 125 lbs you can’t gain more than that, even if you eat for 3 and lay on bed all day.
    “naturally fat on a diet”means: If you eat everything and your natural weight limit is 150 lbs but you want to be skinny (125 lbs) you start eating less and exercising. You’ll lose 25 lbs of your natural weight and become skinny. If you restart eating normally again you’ll gain all your natural weight back. Naturally fat on a diet ppl can become skinny(starved) losing weight and they can gain it again, naturally skinny ppl can’t. Sorry for messy explanation.
  74. Tomas says:
    Giuliana needs to shut it because her doctor did tell her to gain weight on NATIONAL TV. I’m sure that’s why people have responded to her in the way they have. Not to mention she is thinner than ever, looking like a walking bag of bones at the globes. She and Bill seem like a lovely couple and I hope it all works out for them.
  75. hstl1 says:
    I saw her in a Bed, Bath & Beyond in LA and she is anorexic skinny. I couldn’t believe how small she is. She looks like a bobblehead doll.
  76. cara says:
    I wasn’t even breaking the triple digits when I got pregger’s with my first monster (a ten lbs 23 in monster at that…..I’m 5’3) so thin can reproduce (if it’s a healthy thin) BUT, this bitch is not healthy looking. Her hair is too thin, she doesn’t look healthy. Maybe she’s anorexic or maybe she’s just not meant to carry and make a child.
    Here’s what I think these two harpies should do, Adopt OUT OF THE US FOSTER-CARE SYSTEM! give love, financial stability and a home to a kid who deserves it. Maybe a trio of siblings. Be their f*cking hero!
  77. MrsOdie2 says:
    The women that she cites may be naturally thin, whereas she clearly starves her body to be thinner than its natural setpoint. I know three different women who were exceptionally thin and got pregnant. It’s different for everyone. But weight certainly affects what hormones do. I got pregnant more easily after losing weight, for example.
    She needs to butter up some yams and go to town.
  78. daisyfly says:
    If you don’t want to do everything your doctor tells you to do in order to get pregnant because of how it’ll look on you, you’re too effing narcissistic to have children.
  79. Madison says:
    If she really wanted kids she would do whatever the doctors told her to try and get pregnant including putting on more weight, it doesn’t sound to me like she really wants to have kids. Guiliana is probably trying to get pregnant because that’s what you do when you get married, your families expect it, your friends expect it, but she does’t really want to.
  80. bubbles says:
    the irony of the whole thing is that her and Rachel Zoe look geriatric and that’s putting it kindly. maybe in an image driven industry she should actually look at her picture of herself instead of staring at her scale all the time.
  81. MorticiansDoItDeader says:
    @katja. Yes, it’s sick that drug trials can be conducted in such a manner. Many of those women, most likely, felt pressure to take the shot in order to receive lifesaving antivirals that they couldn’t otherwise afford. I’m sorry for your experience as well and I’m glad you decided to discontinue using the shot so quickly. You made a good decision that, hopefully, didn’t affect your long term health.
  82. Matt says:
    I like Guiliana, but COME ON.
    If your Doctor tells you to gain AT LEAST 10 lbs, then you only gain 5lbs, then you go on The View and yap about how you can’t gain weight because of the industry you work in, then you are inviting the public to comment on your weight and how it affects your fertility issues.
  83. Gabriela says:
    I’m a thin girl myself, probably thinner than Giuliana and I gave birth to 2 healthy kids and didn’t gain a pound. Still a skinny biatch. So I see why people can get so jealous.
    Leave Giuliana alone! Miscarriage is hard enough, having people blaming you for it PLUS criticizing your body must be terrible!
    Btw, for all of you saying that Giuliana is narcissist for not gaining 5 pounds to get pregnant, let me just tell you something: 5 pound does NOT heal infertility. Did you know that?
  84. Camille says:
    The first thing my hubby said when he saw her on TV at the Golden Globes red carpet was how thin she was, he thought she looked awful.
    I feel sorry for her, infertility is heart breaking.
  85. MNGIRL76 says:
    “5 pound does NOT heal infertility. Did you know that? ”
    No, but it was advised by a DOCTOR! If she really wanted this she would’ve tried every measure possible. Just sayin
  86. Ruffian9 says:
    An eating disorder will likely effect your ability to get pregnant. Christ, is being that thin REALLY that important? I’m sorry but that’s a pretty f***ed up worldview, IMO.
  87. Kloops says:
    Her behavior and size strongly suggests anorexia. The reality is she doesn’t know if gaining the recommended 10lbs will improve her fertility because she refuses to comply. She’s not getting any sympathy from me.
  88. MAJ says:
    Agree- for getting pregnant, being naturally thin is different than being anorexic. As a “pleasantly plump” mom of four, I had no trouble. Of my many, many mom friends, the ones who had trouble were almost always the ones who were painfully thin or were crazy exercise fiends.
    As they say, everything in moderation.
  89. SEF says:
    If she’s so worried about looking good in an “image-focused industry,” why doesn’t she leave her body alone and work on the face?
    Sorry – am I a horrible person?!
  90. SexyBrownGirl says:
    why is she important?
  91. alexandra says:
    I feel bad for her because she seems sweet. People with eating disorders are very defensive. She is very insecure and she thinks she is ugly. In one of the episodes of her show. She mentioned that she would only hope that her child would have Bill’s looks. She cannot control her facial features but she can control her weight.
  92. Isa says:
    If she would gain 10 lbs her head wouldn’t look so big. No one noticed a 5 pound weight gain and no one would care about a 10 pound gain.
    There is plenty of information about struggling to get pregnant while underweight. Many women have irregular cycles while being underweight. Same thing for overweight. Some women with ED end up stopping their periods altogether. It may not have been the cure she looked for, but if she’s not willing to try then what else will she not be willing to do as a mother?
    And why bring this up again? She shouldn’t be comparing herself to other women.
  93. Isa says:
    Also, I hated the Depo shot. Didn’t gain any weight but man, was I a crazy bitch!
  94. sarah says:
    The reality is she doesn’t know if gaining the recommended 10lbs will improve her fertility because she refuses to comply. She’s not getting any sympathy from me.
    ^^^ THIS
  95. Bellaboo says:
    I hope they do not adopt. If she is not willing to sacrifice 10 lbs to become a mother, she will probably not make the many personal sacrifices that mothers make on a daily basis. No child will come before her career. I would never approve her for adoption. Anyone ever see Mommy Dearest?
  96. Melinda says:
    Mngirl- My obgyn also told me that you can take the nuvaring out for up to 3 hours at a time. Even joked about it saying, “3 hours is all he has! Tell him he’d better hurray up!” It works very well and is quite convenient.
  97. KateNonymous says:
    I can’t help but compare this attitude to Debra Messing’s, when she said that if carrying a few more pounds made it possible to nurse her baby, well, then Wardrobe was just going to have to deal with that.
  98. Derp says:
    She may be naturally thin, but she’s not naturally skinny. Not when you’re as obsessive as this about your diet:
    http://giulianarancic.com/Blog/2009/4/13/Giulianas-Meal-Plan/
  99. nj says:
    Shut up. Stop yapping about your bag of bones body and eat a meatball hero. Put on the ten pounds! Like you couldn’t run it off in a week with a stronger Adderall prescription. Please.
    How can you be so concerned about five pounds when you look so awful? I’m not being mean- but I am her age and I learned long ago that dropping too much weight makes me look gaunt and drawn. I’ve got about forty pounds on Guiliana and I look fifteen years younger. And I am not exaggerating.
  100. Woah!!! says:
    @explainthirdworld
    Woah there,missy/mister.I live in the ‘third world’ and read celebitchy daily via my blackberry(great site,keeps me entertained btwn my calls) and bumped into ur very ignorant comment abt african women being hungry and skinny yet fertile.WRONG!!!
    I’m a doctor working in a somewhat rural area and the ladies here are by no means hungry or skinny.
    Our diet is very high carb rich hence the typical african shape of wide hips and borderline obesity in most women over 35-40.
    I have never commented but was livid dat the stereotype of poor hungry africa lives on when I and my colleagues watched the golden globes yesterday eating roasted corn and groundnuts.
    What I’m saying is dat sure some one or two countries in africa are at war right now but to say third world africa is hungry,google Lagos,Nigeria and other african cities,read the international news once in awhile to get a clear picture instead of getting ur news by watchin angelina jolie’s ‘charity’ journey to Africa
  101. the original bellaluna says:
    Hey Guiliana! Since you’re gonna name-throw, let me point out the PAINFULLY OBVIOUS: Kelly & Posh both started having children MUCH YOUNGER than you! Nor were they always as scary-skinny as they are now.
    Eat an BLT&A (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado); gain the damn 10 lbs as your doctor advised; or STFU. Just a suggestion.
    From what I’ve seen/read of her level of selfishness, there’s no room in her life for a baby.
  102. janie says:
    derp,
    wow, good link on the meal plan. this should be a separate post, she probably consumes 700 calories a day with a workout.no wonder there is no baby.
  103. ra says:
    Does anybody have a picture of her when she was younger, at age of 18-20?
  104. Sara says:
    @ra
    You know what is weird, she used to be on a news show back in early 2001-2003(can’t remember specifically) and she looked TOTALLY different! But when I tried looking it up on the internet I couldn’t find ANYTHING before 2004! Not one mention of her early career before 2004 other than where she went to school. No pictures ANYWHERE, not even a high school photo!
    Wonder why?
  105. ra says:
    @Sara
    I didn’t find her pictures before 2004 as well. As for me, the weirdest thing is how a woman who gets fertility treatments and tones of injections every day refuses to gain 10 pounds. That’s why I supposed she can’t be fatter than this, also because her dad and sister are thin too.
    How did she look in 2001-2003?
  106. TXCinderella says:
    I agree with Alexandra. I had a friend that was very thin and would hardly ever eat. One time she made the comment to me “I may not be that pretty, but I can be skinny”. Yes, I believe it is a self esteem issue. My sister-in-law is anorexic and she thinks no one is on to her. She is rail thin, works out constantly, and when there is a family gathering involving food, she rearranges her food on her plate to make it appear that she has eaten something then says she is so full.
  107. Sara says:
    Because she sat behind a news desk, never saw her figure although she appeared to be thin, but her face looked very different. That is why I think she has had some major plastic surgery over the years. I can’t remember if the show was Good Day LA, The Buzz, or something else entirely.
  108. Athena says:
    She needs to stop comparing herself to others and just face the fact that her body is different and that maybe she really does need to gain some weight to have a better chance at having a baby. If she was really serious about having a baby she would just gain the weight and cover all the bases. Ive watched the snow and find her to be extremely selfish, so this doesn’t surprised me.
  109. CB Rawks says:
    Yep it does affect it. Sorry Jools.
  110. CB Rawks says:
    @”Woah!!!”
    You’re a doctor that uses “dat” in sentences? I feel the two things render each other impossible.
    Well, “dat” is extremely annoying. So is “ur”.
  111. Liana says:
    “Whoa” is a doctor? Yeah, and I’m an astronaut.
  112. Amelia says:
    A woman that selfish and self-centered should not be having children. Perhaps that’s nature’s opinion, too. She’s more interested in “the industry” than in becoming a mother. She can be the skinny TV host all her life while other women, who know the real importance of life, spend theirs with their children and families, being fulfilled and contributing to society. Talking about and interviewing celebrities on TV is NOT contributing to society. Karma is an interesting thing……
  113. Hakura says:
    I agree with most of who’s posted.
    The unfortunate aspect of this is that a doctor on national television gave her sound advice (to gain 10lbs) to help her become pregnant. She made a choice that 10lbs was unacceptable, and outwardly admitted she would only gain 5.
    This alone has told the world that she made her decision. She decided that having a career (maintaining her current physical appearance) was MORE important than getting pregnant.
    That would be totally fine, it’s entirely her life and choices…but she’s spent months attempting to attain sympathy for herself, for not having a child, even knowing the world knows why she’s been unable to. At least partially why, there can always be another problem.
    I do believe she has a major weight problem, if 10lbs is that big a deal. It’s also ridiculous, because pregnancy requires quite a bit of weight gain to be healthy for the child. She needs to look into other options if this is a problem for her.
    My aunt tried with her husband for their whole marriage, 10 years, without success. So I’m not trying to say weight is the ONLY cause for infertility. But in this case, I think it could be.
  114. Jag says:
    “There are thin girls with infertility issues, normal sized girls with infertility issues and overweight girls with infertility issues. Unless your doctor tells you your weight is affecting you in some way…once the doctor rules it out, that’s really not it.”
    Her doctor didn’t rule it out; she was told to gain 10 pounds and only gained 5.
    I hope she never has children until she gets her body image and self-esteem problems handled. No need to pass down eatin disorders and self hate to the next generation.
  115. kristen says:
    Gulainna is really pretty and people so jealous uh its` so pathetic! I think if Gulianna dosent` want to gain that much weight she shouldnt` have to. I mean can you imagine a skinny woman being 5 pounds heavier she is very pretty though. Im sure she would make a much mother than anyone whos` talking crap about her on here. She is really sweet and outgoing.
  116. Victoria says:
    I know this is super late but I cam here via the LeAnne v. G thread. I can’t believe she compared herself to Gisele. Gisele, as it has been well documented, is naturally thin in bone structure and 5’10. They used to call her Olive Oyl. She has always been thin because that is the body type God gave her.
    She needs to separate herself and others like her from the people who were born and have maintained, HEALTHILY, their weight. Posh, Zoe, etc. do not fit into this category. There is such a huge difference and even Posh stated that she needed to pack on a few pounds in order to get preggers the third and fourth time.
