Duchess Kate in black DVF for Remembrance Sunday: pretty & chic?

wenn3607722

These are some new photos of the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate) on Sunday, during the royal part of the UK’s Remembrance Sunday, which honors fallen soldiers. Kate was stationed on the balcony between Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie, Countess of Wessex (Edward’s wife). All of the royal ladies wore black – Kate’s coat is Diane von Furstenberg, with a hat by “couture milliner” Jane Corbett. I especially like Kate’s hat – very chic, especially compared to Camilla’s feather-boa-looking hat monstrosity, which seems too frou-frou for such a somber occasion.

Do you remember how Kate and Will are going to be separated for six weeks next year while Will trains in the Falkland Islands? Well, once he comes back, The Mail reports that he and Kate are considering a semi-permanent move to Scotland. Meaning, Will might put in a transfer request with the RAF so he could be stationed as a search-and-rescue pilot at RAF Lossiemouth. Yeah… I don’t think this will happen, but it’s interesting:

Prince William and his wife Kate are reportedly set to move back to Scotland as he pursues his career in the RAF. The royal couple – who began their relationship while studying in St Andrews – are planning to head north of the border again under plans for William to transfer to RAF Lossiemouth.

At the moment the pair live in Wales where the Prince works as as part of the RAF search and rescue crew. And next year he is due to perform a six weeks tour of duty in the Falkland Islands. Yet although he will head back to Anglesey immediately after his return to Britain, the prince is considering a return to Scotland as early as 2013, according to a senior RAF source.

It is understood the couple are keen to return to the country where their romance blossomed and for which they have a deep-seated affection. A move to Lossiemouth in Moray would mean they were conveniently close to the Royal Estate at Balmoral and neighbouring Birkhall where the couple have spent several holidays.

They would also be near St Andrews where William has signed up to be patron of the university’s forthcoming 600th anniversary celebration appeal. From a professional point of view, a transfer to Lossiemouth would allow the prince – currently trained as a co-pilot – to work in the busy search and rescue centre. Lossiemouth was also the prince’s second choice – behind RAF Valley – for his first posting.

A senior RAF source said: ‘Lossiemouth is simply considered the best place for an RAF search and rescue pilot. It has a great combination of mountain and sea work but covering more and bigger mountains than Wales. It offers more variety and action. It will also give the chance for William to command his own helicopter.’

The Royal couple currently rent a £750-a-month cottage on Anglesey while Prince William remains stationed at RAF Valley. He is signed up for a three-year stint in the RAF – which comes to an end in 2013. After that the 29-year-old prince has several possible options: He could either leave the RAF to take on full-time royal duties; he could remain at RAF Valley; or he could transfer to another RAF search and rescue centre. However, royal insiders believe that a move to RAF Lossiemouth is the prince’s ‘preferred option.’

One aide explained that William intends to complete at least six years of service – believing that it is only fair, having received pilot training worth around £800,000, that he should repay the RAF’s investment in him. The aide also pointed out that St Andrews University celebrates its milestone 600th anniversary in 2013. William is patron for a fundraising campaign at the historic establishment, where he met future wife Kate Middleton, and the couple returned to help launch the £100 million appeal last February.

The aide warned that the moves of royal family members are always subject to change but said the transfer to Lossiemouth was currently the prince’s first choice. He said: ‘A move to Lossiemouth for Prince William and Catherine is part of a long-term forecast but this is the preferred option. It will allow the Duke to continue his RAF career while experiencing a different base and the couple always enjoy their time in Scotland. While nothing is ever set in stone for working Royals, this is the plan on the table as they look ahead.’

RAF spokesman Martin Tinworth declined to discuss the prince’s career, but said any decisions related to personnel were made ‘in connection with crew development and the chain of command.’

A Clarence House spokesman said: ‘At some point next year, Prince William will consider his future in the RAF. No decision has yet been taken.’

William is currently earning £37,170 as a flight lieutenant. Promotion to squadron leader is not normally considered until four years after becoming a flight lieutenant – and then William will have to compete with many others throughout the service for the limited number of yearly upgrade in rank.

[From The Mail]

I’m kind of torn about this one. On one hand, moving to Scotland for three years (!) would mean that Kate would barely have time to take on any charitable “work” in London for many years to come, which just pisses me off. On the other hand, at least Will is thinking about a longer-term military career, and not wasting hundreds of thousands of taxpayer pounds on training for what amounts to a temp job. I really don’t think the Queen would allow this, though. William needs to be closer to London, and he – AND KATE – are going to be expected to take on more responsibilities as soon as their “grace period” is over (2013). So… doubt it on Scotland.

    Some of these hats should be outlawed by international treaty. They are a public safety hazard.

  2. brin says:

    Love that one picture with her lips pursed. Maybe she’s saying “Oh it’s good to be me…huzzah!”

  3. Astrid says:

    The hats are not working for me.

  4. Jackie says:

    she looks great. love the coat and hat. she puts the other 2 to shame. sophie has about as much style as a potted plant.

  5. teehee says:

    She looks so rough. That eyeliner– just…. gah

  6. Boo says:

    Geez, Sophie Wessex is looking old. Looks like the royals have sucked all the youth, beauty, and vibrancy out of her, too.

  7. thinkaboutit says:

    She looks fantastic. That coat is simply gorgeous and fits her perfectly. The hat! Perfect — Camilla, look left, Sohpie, look right — THAT is how it should be done!

  8. Mi says:

    I thought that Catherine looked very appropriate for the occasion, you can’t accuse her of being attention grabbing here. The Countess of Wessex on the other hand should have a worn a hat that was a little more appropriate for the occasion because that seems like a Ascot or a wedding hat to me. And the Duchess of Cornwall has me undecided, i’m not sure if I like the hat for the occasion or not. But other than that they all looked very good.

  9. florrie says:

    London isn’t Britain , there are enough places that need help .She can easily do charitywork in Scotland.

  10. Estella says:

    She looks perfect for the occasion. I love the hat!

  11. I.want.shoes says:

    Where are you guys seeing the coat and the fit?! We only see her from the waist up and there isn’t much to assess.

  12. S says:

    for some reason, I get the impression that the Queen is ok with William working in the army until he is Prince of Wales. I can’t remember where I saw that, but it would make sense that while he is still 2 steps away, he can work where he wants, and him and Kate aren’t upstaging Charles and Camilla.

  13. diana says:

    Bahaha! Kaiser, you are trouble! 😉 Love Kate’s photo you have up on home page for this article.

  14. P.J. says:

    Her hat is atrocious (something between fedora and fascinator and it looks too small for her big head) and although she can match her clothes, hat, eyeliner and eyebrows, she can´t always match her facial expresions with the occasion. There are many pictures /not on this site/ where she´s not only smiling, but grinning like stupid. She turned this solem, touching event into another photo op.

  15. Anne says:

    Diana: So the wind from the plane caused her dress to move. How is that part of Kate being inappropriate? If anything it says something about the person who took/published the photos.

  16. JulieM says:

    It’s tradition for them to wear black on this occasion. They all look nice, even Sophie, who can dress very awkwardly. Exhibit A: the hat. The rest looks nice, though.

    William wanting to move to Scotland further proves to me that he really is not interested in being king. He wants to put off anything that has to do with kingship.

    This plays right in to Waity’s laziness. She just wants to get away where she doesn’t have to do anything. I would not be surprised if she is encouraging her husband to want to make this move further away from royal responsibilities.

    PJ: She does have the unfortunate habit of grinning inappropriately.

  17. Bermuda Blues says:

    Interesting selection of photos. The British tabloids have published primarily pictures of Kate grinning her way through the somber ceremony. Kate grins and she plays with her hair, she grins at Camilla, she grins at Sophie, she grins at the cameras.

    Personally I think Kate’s coat is the least decent one up there. No mention of the button problem rearing its ugly head once again? Double breasted coats are so ancient. Plus the unnecessary floating buttons over her boobs. Fug.

  18. truetalk says:

    i prefer sophie’s hat. kate’s hat is too small.

  19. Flan says:

    Sophie’s hat makes me dizzy.

    William should always wear something on his head though, makes him look far better.

    It’s good for some of the royal family to live in Scotland.

  20. Cerulean says:

    Those hats are just ugly and terrible. It looks like Paul Revere’s 3 corner hat after a horse trampled on it. She’s so mannish.

  21. GoodCapon says:

    Bermuda Blues

    Thanks for bringing that up. Waity has had an unfortunate history of smiling at inappropriate occasions (New Zealand, Birmingham riots, now this). Sometimes I think that she is completely devoid of intelligence and empathy.

  22. serenitea says:

    Come on celebitchy — why didn’t you post all those pictures of her giggling and smirking away?

  23. L says:

    Funny, I saw a bunch of pictures from this ceremony as well, and most of them that I saw had everyone being very serious and somber. Most of the ones of her smiling were when she was talking to the people next to her. Which is normal.

    Keep in mind the pictures in the box were taking through the event before, during, and after. I’m pretty sure she was appropriate during the ceremony itself.

    That said, Sophie’s hat is awful and more appropriate for a wedding than this kind of event. Way to cheery and bright.

  24. HoustonGrl says:

    For having such an easy life, the royals sure look worn out. Kate is fine, but it does seem out of place for her to grin throughout the event. I think she just views this whole “duty” thing as a fun little game. I don’t think it has hit her yet – this is forever!

  25. diana says:

    @Anne: are you serious? She should have made the IMPOSSIBLE to cover her butt. I don’t blame her for not being able to control the weather, but on any day if that would happen to me I would hold on to the skirt for dear life! And that on a normal st when nobody takes my photos. If I were her, or if any other woman would on this planet would be in that situation would make a visible effort to cover up! Not her! And also, I would probably make sure that I would have some underwear on. Any!

  26. S says:

    @Anne – I watched that live – it was not wind from the plane, it was an extremely windy day and she seemed more concerned with keeping her hair under control than her dress. All I could think watching that scene unfold is how mortified the Queen would be. She spent a good 15 minutes on that tarmac.

    @Diana – totally agree, that dress would be held tight in my fist to keep it down.

  27. GoodCapone says:

    Anne –

    Considering they were outside where there is a chance that it could be windy, she could’ve worn something that wouldn’t be easily blown away by the wind. That’s common sense. Instead she decided to wear a flimsy dress.

    What an utterly stupid woman.

  28. Boo says:

    I remember reading that Princess Diana had tiny but effective weights sewn into the hems of dresses she was wearing outdoors after she got caught/photographed with a rogue hemline in the wind. Now, if dumb old American me knows this trick, how is it possible that Kate didn’t employ it on the notoriously windy runway in a light summer dress? Fool.

  29. Anne says:

    @diana: And if she had kept her hands on her sides and walked stiffly around, I’m sure that would have been a problem for you too. Going back to look at the video, she did hold her dress down several times. You make it sound like she was standing in the wind posing like Marilyn Monroe.

    @S: My mistake I thought it was the plane. Based on the video clip I just watched she did hold her dress several times throughout that. And so what if she pushed her hair out of her face. And honestly given more serious things that the Queen’s own children have done, I doubt a dress blowing in the wind is going to bother the Queen all that much.

    The whole thing is a mountain out of a molehill.

  30. diana says:

    @Anne: hahaha, but this is what she does most of the time. walks around stiffly with a grind on her face. And nope! I wasn’t comparing her with Monroe. You kidding me? Monroe was a beautiful actress . This woman is our future queen flashing her naked butt to the whole world. I’m sure she wasn’t happy with that, but also there are hundreds of photos of her on the internet…getting out of the cars or getting in the cars where you can see her underwear or lack off. All those 10 years while dating William. Recurring issue? Aha! One time yeah, it can happen, million times….um! nope!

  31. Miladie29 says:

    No photos of her grinning and laughing, as if it was a joyous event? She looked like she was having so much fun yesterday. Camilla and Sophie laughed with her, but they grew serious immediately. Kate, in many photos, looked like she couldn’t stop laughing.

    She was also the only one who kept touching her hair, fixing her hat, and kept looking in different directions instead of focusing on what was happening on the grounds.

    In some photos, when she wasn’t smiling, she looked bored, vacant, and uninterested. She seems incapable of behaving appropriately and showing empathy.

    There is a pattern emerging here of Kate not knowing how to behave accordingly. She’s done this smiling/giggling routine on several somber, serious occasions.

  32. Luise says:

    Miladie 29: Kate can’t stop touching her hair because she’s just checking to see if her hair extensions are still attached to her head.

  33. taxi says:

    Sophie’s fascinator is utterly inappropriate for the solemn occasion. 2nd only to Beastie’s absurdity at Will’s wedding.

    Kate looks fine.

    Camilla looks her usual fashion mess.

    No pics of Anne? Zara?

  34. RobN says:

    You know, they actually have charities in Scotland. It’s an entire country, not actually a backwater.

  35. gab says:

    Holy eyebrows Kate!!!

  36. ruby says:

    Did she seriously think she was applying day makeup ? That’s way too heavy around the eyes, completely inappropriate.

    I dislike the hat, it’s too small for her head. As for the coat, it’s nothing special, I would pick Sophie’s if I had to, none of those weird fussy buttons.

    Having said that, Camilla was once again a mess so I guess Kate profits from the comparison.

  37. TXCinderella says:

    William looks so much like his Mother. He is so handsome!

  38. Hautie says:

    @Taxi

    “No pics of Anne? Zara?”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    According to the Daily Mail…
    “Protocol dictates that those married into the family, with the exception of the Duke of Edinburgh, watch from a distance.”
    So the Kate was on the balcony with the other spouses.
    Here is the picture of the Queen with her children and Phillip during the ceremony.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2060884/Remembrance-Sunday-2011-Queen-leads-tributes-Britains-fallen-heroes.html
    What was not shown in the other set of pictures with the spouses… was Anne’s husband was with Camilla, Kate and Sophie on the balcony. It seems the photo agencies cut him out of those pictures.
  39. serenitea says:
    Look up Samantha Cameron — she did it right.
  40. iseepinkelefants says:
    I think Sophie always looks great (reminds me of Diana, looks wise). She gets a lot of flak (I”m not sure why) but I think she’s one of the better Royals (far and away better than Kate). She does her job, with very little press and that’s that. You never hear much from her, but she’s always at one event or another.
    As for Kate, are you kidding me? Scotland is the perfect excuse for her. A) she doesn’t have to do much charity work because she has to live in Scotland and “take care of her husband” (who works 24 hr shifts) and b) she gets to live in Balmoral. That was one of the first places where she got a taste of her Roayl life (living in a “cottage there) so she probably figures this is almost as good as living in KP or Buckingham Palace. Waity loves the finer things in life, I mean you can’t really expect her to live in some 750/m cottage. Scoff!
    Miladie29 – geez she’s got the crown isn’t that enough? You can’t actually expect her to keep up the pretense?!?! Besides William will never divorce her and the British press will never turn on her again (they learned their lesson when she got the crown). She can do whatever she wants.
  41. Bermuda Blues says:
    DailyMail has pictures of Kate hunting. She’s grinning that awful grin while engaged in her ‘Princess Lessons’ to become an adequate shot at killing animals on the Queen’s Balmoral estate. I mean seriously – hunting lessons before taking on any charitable work?
    Gosh she’s awful.
  42. Kim says:
    Still feel bad she has to stand next to that hag Camilla when it should be Princess Di. Every time I see Camila at anything royal I am like NO she doesnt deserve to be there – it should be Diana.
  43. S says:
    @Kim – Diana wouldn’t be there anyways as her and Charles would be divorced. Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents myself, but I know how much happier life is when your parents are happy, and I’ll bet Will and Harry realize that too, which is why they’ve accepted Camilla, because she obviously makes Charles happy and she seems like a nice lady. I’m sure they would have been perfectly happy with whoever Diana ended up with as well. They had a terrible marriage, but at least they got 2 wonderful sons out of it…it’s only fair to let everyone move on with their lives.
  44. diana says:
    Oh My God! I just saw the pictures of Kate taken shooting lessons. That article by DailyMail is awful. They pretty much gave her the excuse that she has to be good at shooting if she wants to be accepted in the family. You should see her smile! What a terrible terrible person!! Too early for her to work but not too early to start killing things in a “royally” manner? Ten Queen mothers and their entire clan all together wouldn’t make me kill anything at all! What a terrible sport. And again what a terrible person!
  45. Sassy says:
    Was she wearing any underwear under the yellow blowing dress? I couldn’t see any!
  46. Lindy says:
    @gab–YES, my gawd, those eyebrows! Y’all all need to go back and look at them. They are… They are… Yeah.
  47. Luise says:
    Weird facial expressions and old person neck. Kate that is.
  48. eternalcanadian says:
    Again with the pancake makeup. Even Camilla and Sophie look dewy-faced next to Catherine.
    The hat is much too small for Catherine’s large head. While Camilla’s hat could have done without all those feathers and Sophie without that weird side slant, they do have the size right.
