Anthony Mackie & Kate Beckinsale announce the Spirit Award nominations

Note to self: Include Anthony Mackie in the next Hot Guy Friday. For real, he’s so adorable.

These are new photos of the always cute Anthony Mackie and the always try-hard Kate Beckinsale, announcing the Independent Spirit Awards yesterday. Let’s just talk about the superficial stuff before we discuss the noms – why is Kate Beckinsale there? And how cute is her dress? And why don’t my legs look that sexy? As for Anthony – I’m not loving the length of his hair right now. It’s like it’s a half an inch away from being totes Boyz II Men. I also love the gap in his teeth – folklore has it that the gap signifies a lustful nature. PLS!

Here’s the list of this season’s Independent Spirit Award nominees – I’m just including the bigger awards, and you can see the full list here.

BEST FILM: 50/50, Beginners, Drive, Take Shelter, The Artist, The Descendants

BEST DIRECTOR
Michel Hazanavicius The Artist
Mike Mills Beginners
Jeff Nichols Take Shelter
Alexander Payne The Descendants
Nicolas Winding Refn Drive

BEST FEMALE LEAD
Lauren Ambrose Think of Me
Rachael Harris Natural Selection
Adepero Oduye Pariah
Elizabeth Olsen Martha Marcy May Marlene
Michelle Williams My Week with Marilyn

BEST MALE LEAD
Demián Bichir A Better Life
Jean Dujardin The Artist
Ryan Gosling Drive
Woody Harrelson Rampart
Michael Shannon Take Shelter

BEST SUPPORTING FEMALE
Jessica Chastain Take Shelter
Anjelica Huston 50/50
Janet McTeer Albert Nobbs
Harmony Santana Gun Hill Road
Shailene Woodley The Descendants

BEST SUPPORTING MALE
Albert Brooks Drive
John Hawkes Martha Marcy May Marlene
Christopher Plummer Beginners
John C. Reilly Cedar Rapids
Corey Stoll Midnight in Paris

Random thoughts: no lead actress nomination for Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs? Weird. Maybe she’s not a major Best Actress contender after all – which is what I kind of suspected after seeing the trailer, which was a hot mess. And no Joseph Gordon Levitt for Lead Actor for 50/50? That sucks! And no Clooney either – The Descendants and 50/50 both got recognized for best film, but their leads both got shut out. That’s kind of funny in Clooney’s case, since he’s Mr. Oscar Campaign this year.

Beginners is starting to get a lot of buzz too – it won big at the Gotham Awards. The Artist and Jean Dujardin are on everyone’s “Best of” lists right now, so I guess I have to start paying attention to that film. My guesses for the lead awards are Dujardin and Michelle Williams. If it’s not Dujardin, it will be Gosling – I remember when he won the Spirit Award for Half Nelson, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they awarded him again. The supporting categories are anyone’s guess. Meh.

    Did Kate forget her pants?
Her legs look nice if short.

  2. tapioca says:

George and JGL are too mainstream, even if their films are indie.

Kate B looks like a Kardashian now. Not a compliment.

  3. Jackie says:

i use to love the spirit awards. they have gotten too much like other awards now, though.

  4. Fakey says:

Angie Jo is completely ignored while her rabid fans are claiming her directorial effort is Oscar worthy.

    • Emma says:

Unless a film is entered into competition at a Film Festival, doesn’t it have to be in ‘release’ before it can be considered for the other awards?

Angie’s film (I’m assuming you’re talking about Angelina Jolie) is scheduled for release on December 23, 2011.

P.S. Please give everyone at IUC our very best wishes. 🙂

Sadly I remember way back when Kate was an indie girl and wasn’t terrible.

  6. whome says:

i just saw 50/50 and it was a great movie, really deserving of the nomination. I cant wait for dec 25th to see Pariah, Ive been waiting for months for this movie to be released. And all the feed back has been fantastic.

  7. Franny says:

He kind of looks like Will Smith

  8. Julie says:

I find Kate beautiful and in reference to the skinny VS models….this would be an example to me of what they would look good at weight wise.

  9. Cerulean says:

She over dresses every time. A simpler dress would have been cute.
Gaps can enhance the coupling experience. Wink wink.
    Trust.

  10. Eve says:

Michael Shannon for Lead Male for sure.

  11. coco says:

Kate’s got killer legs but the dress looks kinda cheap.

what about kirsten dunst? melancholia? is that not valid? she KILLED it vs. michelle/marilyn. even kiera k. (who i don’t actually really like) was more interesting and challenging that that sad saggy soppy version m.w. put out there on screen as miss monroe. and yes, i think e. olsen was wonderful and deserving for sure, but again, why no KIRSTEN?!?
