Mindy McCready on kidnapping son: I can’t kidnap what already belongs to me

Mindy McCready is a 36 year-old country music singer who made headlines in 2008 when she claimed to have had an affair, starting when she was 15, with baseball great Roger Clements. She later attempted to cash in on the affair by releasing a sex tape with a boyfriend. She has several thankfully failed suicides attempt in her past, and she spent a month in jail in 2008 for violating probation on multiple charges including assault on her mother, DUI and attempting to buy Oxycontin with a fake prescription. She also was on celebrity rehab in 2009 but then had a possible overdose in 2010. So McCready is an addict and a mess, basically, and her mother was awarded custody of her five year old son as a result.

In the latest Mindy McCready news, she took her five year old son, Zander, from her father’s house in Florida to Tennessee. A judge in Florida has ruled that she must return Zander to her mother, Zander’s grandmother, by Thursday because his grandmother has custody of him. According to McCready, everything is fine though, because the kid is hers, she owns him, and she skyped with the sheriff’s office to explain that. Also, McCready claims she can’t go back to Florida because she’s either five months or seven months pregnant with twins, depending on which outlet she’s talking to. The AP has an interview with her in which she says she’s nearly seven months while People Magazine talked to her rep who confirmed that she’s five months along. So according to McCready she was able to take the boy from Florida just last week, but she can’t return him this week since she’s pregnant. It doesn’t matter though since her son is her property anyway, and also because her mother was supposedly abusing Zander, which she denies.

Mindy McCready tells Access Hollywood that despite reports, she and her 5-year-old son are not missing.

“I am working with lawyers to try to get all this straightened out,” she told Access Hollywood in an e-mail on Wednesday. “I did not steal my child, as it would be impossible for me to kidnap what already belongs to me! There never was any missing persons report and never an Amber Alert.”

According to the Associated Press, however, the Department of Children and Families said a missing persons report was filed in Florida on Tuesday.

The DCF told the AP that the report was filed after the singer took her son, Zander, from the singer’s father’s home. McCready’s mother reportedly has custody of the child.

Country singer Mindy McCready said Wednesday she will probably not be able to bring her 5-year-old son back to Florida to fulfill a judge’s order by Thursday afternoon— because she is nearly 7 months pregnant with twins. By not returning as ordered, she risks arrest.

Speaking exclusively to The Associated Press, McCready said that she and her mother have had a long custody battle in Florida over Zander. Her mother was awarded guardianship in 2007.

The battle became more public this week, when the Florida Department of Children and Families said a missing person report was filed with police after McCready took Zander from her father’s home. McCready was able to visit with the boy there under a court order and the 36-year-old singer said she had spent much of the past month with her son at the home. Her mother and father are divorced.

McCready alleges that her son suffered abuse while living at her mother’s home and that is one of the reasons why she left with the boy last week.

“I’m a mom first,” said McCready from Nashville, Tenn. “No matter what happens, I’m going to protect my kid. If I have to go to jail, so be it.”

When reached at her Lee County home Wednesday night, McCready’s mother, Gayle Inge, said the abuse allegations are “absolutely not true.”

During the interview with the AP, a tearful McCready recounted a messy and confusing tale of court custody battles and family fights. McCready is suing her mother and a tabloid newspaper for libel in a Palm Beach County court.

On Tuesday, DCF discovered that McCready and the boy were not at her father’s home and a judge ruled she must return him voluntarily by 5 p.m. Thursday or risk an arrest warrant.

According to Aimee McLaughlin of the Childrens Network of Southwest Florida, a case manager filed a missing person report with the Cape Coral Police on Tuesday. The DCF spokesman said Children’s Network of Southwest Florida is the Community-Based Care agency for the area.

McCready said she was under the impression that the Florida judge was transferring the custody case to Tennessee and that it wouldn’t be a problem if she brought him there.

McCready, who was born in Florida and found fame in Nashville as a singer in the 1990s, said she left with her son to the Tennessee city before Thanksgiving.

Both McCready and her mother agree that a Florida judge had heard testimony during court hearings at the end of October and early November regarding the singer regaining custody of Zander. Both women agree that the judge had not yet ruled and that he said for now, the boy should remain with his grandmother.

Cape Coral Police Lt. Tony Sizemore said McCready called the department via Skype on Wednesday. – AP

What the hell kind of mother talks about their kid like that? “I did not steal my child, as it would be impossible for me to kidnap what already belongs to me.” She’s talking about her five year old son as if he’s some thing that she owns, like a coat she left somewhere. This woman is an addict and she’s twisting reality to suit her purposes. The sad thing is that she’s about to have two more kids to mess up, if it’s even true that she’s pregnant. It sounds like a detail she added to try and avoid prosecution.

Belongs to you? BELONGS TO YOU?!
God I hate mothers like her.

  2. brin says:

I really hope she isn’t pregnant. This is just sad, I feel sorry for that little boy.

  3. eternalcanadian says:

Wow, this is just disturbing. The child is not a piece of property that belongs to anyone.

And now Mindy is pregnant, with twins to boot, and that’s her excuse for not being able to get from TN to FL to return the child to his grandmother?

    What a crock!

  4. Javagirl1 says:

She sounds like she’s on crack. I read the Ali Lohan post then this one. I believe CB has rendered me speechless for now.

  5. Jb says:

I love how she is sitting on the table like it ain’t no thang.

  6. Sisi says:

    Poor kid(s)

  7. I.want.shoes says:

I hope her son (and twins) grow up far away from her.

  8. journey says:

i’ve read that abusive parents frequently speak of their children as if they were their property to do with whatever they wish. not saying that mccready is abusive, but her speaking like that certainly sets off warning bells.

    • constance says:

They do. Many times to justify avoiding or restricting intervention from outside sources such as family and police. She is disgusting trash and failed killing herself because she thought shed become “more famous.” That’s not working out now, so she’s testing other options.

Trash will go to long lengths to avoid real work, responsibility, and stability when drugs are in the mix.

I hate to say it without a Logan involved but.this one sure sounds like a.candidate for another cum dumpster award.

    • KC says:

What she’s doing, IMO, is abuse- maybe not physical, but the confusion she is causing her son, and her allegations of her mother abusing him are completely out of line and messing with his head. She has a narcissistic entitlement issue going on, and is the perfect candidate for an abusive (esp. neglect) mother. I sincerely hope she is not pregnant again, and just bat-sh*t crazy!

  9. fabgrrl says:

That poor, poor little boy! Imagine what he must be going through. I went through something similar when I was 5 or 6 and it was so terrifying and confusing.

  10. badrockandroll says:

Warning bells went off for this woman YEARS ago – her whole mess of a history is only touched upon here. She has been given chance upon chance, by both the legal system and by the country music industry, and she screws up each and every time. She has been out of the news for about a year.
Call me a cynic, but I think that if she really was that far along, we would have heard about her pregnancy before now, so I’m calling yet another psychotic whoppper from the mouth of Ms. McCready.
All that being said, it seems to me that there may have been allegations in the past that her mother was abusive, to both Mindy and to her son, so I’m not sure that this little boy has a fighting chance in the custody of either of them.

    • Girl says:

Agreed. If she was off drys and ok now, she’d be doing her level best to keep things above board and none of this “oh excuse me! I guess I was mistaken and though the judge agreed to this kidnapping”. I sincerely hope that if she is pregnant, custody arrangements are being made for those babies because I don’t see her being fit to parent twins with this mess going on.

      • the original bellaluna says:

I also feel bad for her parents. Can you imagine what it’s like to be put through all that drama by your child, and then end up having to raise your grandchild, only to have him kidnapped by the addict?

    • Seal Team 6 says:

Exactly. She’s even worse than Linnocent. it’s just not as much of the public know why she is, or what she’s been up to for the past 20 years. Her DV abuse doesn’t excuse her own behavior.

  11. Mourning the Death of Music says:

Hey, I frequently and quite vehemently proclaim that those are, “MY babies!” when speaking of my four boys. And in no way am I saying they are my personal property.

If what she was saying was to be interpreted as, “I couldn’t kidnap a child that I’ve given birth to, it is of my blood, my family, MY child – not a stranger’s,” then I get what she’s trying to say.

I’m not excusing her prior behavior. She sounds like a troubled woman. But I’m not going to automatically dismiss her claims that the child was being mistreated by his guardian (grandmother) solely based on Mindy’s past problems.

    • L says:

What belongs to me, is a far cry from ‘my babies

“I couldn’t kidnap a child that I’ve given birth to, it is of my blood, my family, MY child – not a stranger’s,”
The problem is that YES that is kidnapping. It’s the most common kind of kidnapping actually.

      • Mourning the Death of Music says:

        I understand that point, L.
I was also attempting to explain how she possibly sees this.
I’m not defending her or her actions.

  12. Cathy says:

Never heard of her, but then I’m not into country music. I feel bad for the little boy.

    • DarkEmpress says:

I never heard of her before either. All I could think of is the movie Kick Ass. The little girl played by Chloe Moretz, her character Hit girl’s real name is mindy mcready. Weird. I wonder if they named the character after this lady! Well at least they know who the little boy is with and hopefully this can be resolved peacefully.

  13. jc126 says:

Yeah, she’s a frigging mess. But I’ve heard completely law-abiding, normal parents make that same comment – how can you kidnap your own kid, if you haven’t been denied access to see them altogether? I understand the charge, but I think to those people who don’t, they think calling it kidnapping instead of violating the custody order by keeping the kid too long is overreaching.
I wonder who fathered the twins, if they exist.
Still can’t believe Clemens slept with when she was a teen, and he’s like 13 years older.

    • Euphorima says:

Um…..grown ass men do have sex with KIDS sometimes. Not saying this Clements guy did it to her.

But some men are just pathetic, and they dnt care if a ‘kid’ is involved.

  14. Samigirl says:

This woman is INSANE. If she doesn’t have custody of her child, then taking them away IS kidnapping, regardless of if you gave birth to them. My brother and I were taken out of my mother’s custody several times, and I lost count of the number of times she kidnapped us back. You aren’t scared, because it’s your mom, and it’s someone you love and trust, but it also is very, very unsafe. I feel for that little boy to have to go through this.

    • Pont Neuf says:

      Excuse me?!?!?!!!

Her behaviour is completely normal, healthy, constructive, compassionate and loving!

In fact, I understand her perfectly. I mean, when I was a little girl I had a teddy bear, and I took it everywhere because IT was MINE. And I do the same with MY favourite handbag. Just as I would do with any other form of property, such as a car, a pet, a toy, a child, a lap top… You know, it’s all the same! You buy it, use it and when it doesn’t function anymore well, you dump it somewhere, right?

What I want to highlight is that Mindy is behaving logically, maturely and is showing a great deal of respect and consideration for everybody else involved in this classy, happy and non-traumatic situation.

And she isn’t a drug addict! She just needs to unwind from time to time and yes, ALL OF YOU are the ones with the problem. If you would just stop criticizing her over nothing…

Poor, poor non-delusional and very talented (ha!) Miss McCready!

      • Euphorima says:

        Ok then……Mindy.

      • Cirque28 says:

        LOL @ Pont Neuf!

      • Samigirl says:

I had a really hoity toity response lined up, then I realized you were effing with me. Pregnancy hormones have me on edge. Regardless, my point is, Courts do not take custody away from their mothers unless something very bad is going on. This woman has been on a downward spiral for SEVERAL years.

Like I said, just because she birthed the child, doesn’t mean that child is HERS. My father (who adopted me) didn’t birth me, but I’m mine. And that biological mother of mine…neither my brother nor myself would ever consider each other “hers.” I know what it’s like to be taken out of your home by someone you love and trust…and then realize, holy sh*t, that should never have happened.

      • hatsumomo says:

Hello there Pont, havent seen your comments in a while!

      • Pont Neuf says:

Hey, Hatsumomo! I’ve been around, lurking in the shadows of the latest Kardashian scandal *evil cackle*. Good to see you, too!

Samigirl: sorry for my irreverent post (OK, it isn’t irreverent at all – I meant every word of it, 100%, LOL), but Miss McCready’s level of crazy deserves a bit of mockery.

As for your personal situation, 1) I’m sorry you had to go throgh this as a child and 2) it wasn’t my intention to laugh at it. Sorry.

I’m just crazy like that… And my name isn’t even Mindy!

      • Samigirl says:

Ha. I wasn’t offended. Ya know, after I re-read it!

  15. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

    Mindy looks like Holly Madison.

  16. Jayna says:

I feel for the boy and for Mindy’s mother, the hell she has put her through for years.

  17. dena says:

    nice t-shirt, bimbo crackhead.

  18. Ambergesa says:

There is no way to justify that comment, when you’re an unstable drug addict that’s lost custody of the child as the court believes that you’re incapable of providing a stable safe home and you decide one day, because you are selfish and crackcrazy to without permission from their legal guardian, take that child and leave 2nd state

    • Ambergesa says:

2nd = the and I’m never commenting from my phone again. That’s the definition of kidnapping. My friends brother was jailed for kidnapping for almost 2 years for getting his kids back a day late.

  19. Cirque28 says:

She’s only 36? Admittedly, she does look good in these photos, but normally I think she looks closer to 46.

  20. Kimbob says:

You know, having children is a GREAT RESPONSIBILITY! I truly do not believe that just because some women “have the equipment,” necessarily means that it’s OK to have children!

It’s a SHAME this country is so effing “politically correct.” Just like the right to drive is a PRIVILEGE, not a RIGHT….so should the ability to procreate…it should be a PRIVILEGE!

Driving is a privilege because people that drive bear a great responsibility…they can KILL PEOPLE if they are not responsible. Well, having children, to me, is no different. When raising a child, parents can really F*#K them up emotionally and physically if not responsible…just like this Mindy woman (I’ve vaguely heard mention of her name along w/country music). Seriously…what’s the REAL DIFFERENCE between killing someone and/or scarring them mentally/emotionally/physically FOR LIFE by a very irresponsible upbringing?! What’s the difference, really? Mindy, by all standards, appears to be CRAY-CRAY! Her tubes should have been TIED!!!

    • badrockandroll says:

      @Kimbob: Eugenics much?

Who decides who ties whose tubes when? Yes, there are a lot of people (PEOPLE, not just women) who shouldn’t have children. But I am more afraid of a world that consists of tribunals and boards deciding who can have children and who should be dismembered to prevent procreation.

      • Kimbob says:

        @badrockandroll….yes….totally eugenics…and much.

I can’t apologize that I am a proponent for responsible family planning…I just cannot. This is my opinion, and last time I checked, I think I’m allowed.

I respect that you do not agree. We can agree to disagree.

      • Seal Team 6 says:

The US invented Eugenics, and then those bloody Nazis had to steal the “science” from us and be better at it tahn us.

Appalling anyone is for Eugenics in 2011, not matter how icky MM is.

  21. Twez says:

When she was on Celebrity Rehab, she had seizures when detoxing, and a brain scan was done which pretty much showed that if she kept drinking, she’d die. Some of it was past brain injury from a physically abusive relationship. I’m sad to see that she’s relapsed and is walking that particular razor’s edge.

    • Embee says:

That is wild…I had not known that about her. A brain scan, really? So she is brain damaged from being physically abused and has exacerbated it with drugs/drink? That’s just…horrifying and sad.

    • Seal Team 6 says:

She was badly abused, and kept going back to her abuser, but there is no proof she has brain damage from abuse (I am a DV survivor).

She has a rap sheet as long as Lohan’s,if not longer, and for things even worse than what Lohan has done, and is a manipulative liar and thief in the very worst addict way.

My sympathy for her went out the window when she was on Celebrity Rehab and showed how twisted her personality has become, and after, when she actually lived with one of her fellow Rehabbers and stole from them.

  22. Nilber says:

I heard something on the radio that made me snicker at how true of a statement this was. “Mindy McCready is the Lindsay Lohan of Country Music.” Ha! So very true!

  23. marge says:

there’s only one way I can express this: LOCA DE PATIO

  24. Seal Team 6 says:

I loathe what she said about “ownership,” but what she’s said is true. As long as a child isn’t being CONVENTIONALLY neglected or abused by their parents, said parents can pretty much do anything they like to the kid, as even the USSC has ruled. They can send them out of the country to abusive boot camps, send them to “Ex Gay” programs, make them be homeschooled, etc. Look at Courtney Stoddard — sold into marriage. Children don’t have the same Constitutional rights as adults. Courts have said so.

Mindy, however, kidnapped her child, and WHY are they allowing her to set the timeline? The child should be seized and flown back to the custodial adult NOW, and Mindy needs prison time.

She was a decent talent, although I never cared for her singing, but drugs, alcohol, and bad relationships turned her into this. We wonder what may happen to Lindsay Lohan, and Mindy is it. Don’t forget MM was a huge rising star in her time.

  25. Yibis says:

According to Wikipedia, she tried to commit suicide WHILE pregnant with this poor boy. He is the son of Mindy and her abusive ex who was charged for attempting to murder her. Her story is all kinds of messed up. I hope they get the boy back unharmed and that she delivers in jail. Then maybe the next baby/babies will have a chance?

  26. crazycatlady says:

I was totally perplexed by this woman while watching her on Celeb Rehab. And I kept waiting for Dr. Drew to draw out the truth for us viewers, but nope. There was mention of her and pills when she checked in, yet the whole time she was there she kept claiming her only addiction was men/abusive relationships. Then the seizure thing happened…still no mention of a true substance addiction.

She seemed to be a very sweet and well-meaning woman, yet you hear about all of this DRAMS going on in her life, and it all leaves me thinking she should forget singing and switch to acting.

  27. Heather says:

What a great double standard we have here in the US. Family courts are an absolute joke. Do you think that if it had been the FATHER of the child that took him from the grandparents (or MM if she cared enough to actually have custody), that he wouldn’t be rotting in jail right now? Yet this “golden vagina” can kidnap her son all because his safety is her #1 priority? Where was his safety on her priority list when she was overdosing or attempting suicide? Must have been a little further down the list huh? Right after whoring around, drinking and doing drugs. And she cares so much for him that she would disobey the law and put him through the traumatizing event of the police having to come and take him away? Mother of the year right there. But of course she won’t see that as HER fault…it will be her moms fault. Because nothing is ever the golden vag’s fault…she only has the best interest of her neglected child at heart. I hope she rots in jail.

    • badrockandroll says:

      @ heather:
Although I certainly don’t condone MM’s behaviour, I think that you are just a wee bit harsh, and perhaps allowing the family court experience that you or a loved one has had to colour your judgement here.

MM is in bad shape, no argument, but I think that there is even more wrong with her than drugs and booze could cause. Certainly her relationship with the father of her kid was a bad one. I don’t believe that the child should be with either of his parents, but I am not sure that his grandmother should be assumed to be the best option for him either. After all, she thought that it was OK for Mindy to associate with Roger Clements when she was 15, and that it was OK for Mindy to trek off to nashville alone when she was 18, based on her bar karaoke experience. If you read about MM, you will find that her early family life is described by others as toxic.

I don’t think that either Mindy or her mom are terribly maternal, or of sound mind either, and I don’t believe that the child would prosper in the care of either of them. But I find your phrase “golden vagina” to be odious, particularly when used to describe someone who obviously has mental problems.
