Evan Rachel Wood in black Valentino: stunning or washed out & busted?

I’ve really grown to love Evan Rachel Wood over the past year. I think she’s right up there with Carey Mulligan and Mia Wasikowska for “the best 20-something actresses” currently. But my ERW love has limits, and this hairstyle is definitely pushing them. Evan was at the Critics Choice Awards, likely to help represent The Ides of March. Evan wore this Valentino gown which… fine, I’ll just say it. I LOVE IT. Please don’t disregard all of the bad things I’ve said about lace and crochet dresses before. Lace and crochet is almost always horrible, I swear!!!! But for some reason, I’m in love with this dress, and I adore it on Evan. I think it works because it’s mostly solid, and the “lace” part isn’t really lace, maybe? It’s, like, perforated fabric? Whatever. I love it. Go ahead and yell at me.

But, as I said, I’m not loving her hair. From certain angles, the little peaks looked like horns. And from other angles, it looked like her hair was still done up in old-timey ribbon curls. I hate to say this too – but she needs to go a shade darker. Just do a honey blonde, maybe? It would make her look so washed out. Still, the makeup is fabulous.

Would you like a closeup of the engagement ring Jamie Bell gave her? Here you go – the ring is really pretty and much larger than I was expecting. Rin Tin Tin money, wazzup?

    LOL@”Rin Tin Tin money, wazzup?”
Love the ring(s), not crazy about the dress and hairdo.

I love gray nail polish! If she hadn’t homewrecked Dita’s marriage I would love her more.

Reminds me of middle school- all she needs is sparkly butterfly clips.

    • Meggers says:

We must be the same age! I remember wearing this exact do, with little butterfly clips, circa 96-97.

I like the dress, and I love where she’s going with the entire look. It struck me as a sort of gothic, neo Victorian homage. (Wow. That sounded pretentious.)

Hair…eh, I think she was going for the pale gothic thing wiht the whole outfit. That seems to require either jet black or almost white hair. But, in general, I think she needs to go darker.

I have tried so hard to like this girl, and I just can’t. She’s a HORRIBLE actress. I absolutely cannot stand her on True Blood. Ugh. And her smug face, I just wanna smack it.

I do have fond memories of that hairstyle, tho. That was totally my go-to hairstyle 12yrs ago when I was growing out bangs and was too lazy to wash my greasy hair.

Thank GOD I’m not the only one who thinks this girl sucks as an actress. She is unwatchable to me. She’s either overacting or reminds me of a community theater production.

    • Veruca says:

No. Neither of you are alone in your assessments.

    • joxjooze says:

      I’m totally with you!
Why on earth is she making these stupid faces whenever she’s on the red carpet?!

    • jay says:

she wasn’t the best fit on True Blood. I think she tried to do campy, crazy style to fit the show, but it just didn’t pan out. However, I thought she was wonderful as Veda in Mildred Pierce. Watching her and Kate Winslet play off each other was a treat.

While I’m glad her look has changed from the too heavy glamorous look she was trying before, I do wish she kept with the red hair. It looked wonderful on her.

I stopped watching TB once she got in. She killed the show for me with her horrible acting. Bitch.

  6. Girl says:

Yeah, the hair reminds me of when my used to make me sit in pin curls all day to “train” my bone-straight hair. Not a good look here.

  7. Asli says:

That ring is beautiful! I love the other ring too. Is that a blue sapphire?

  8. HoustonGrl says:

How does she get her skin to look like Powder? Is there such a thing as reverse spray tan?

That tattoo ruins it for me.

  9. spinner says:

Gorgeous!! She looks a bit bare up top.
A beautiful vintage necklace would have completed her look nicely. Also, love the rings & nail polish. ZING!!

I like the dress, I feel like I’ve seen it before on someone else but I guess not. I like her, I too think she’s a good actress, but agree with others about her not being good on True Blood.
The hair (and the big, distracting tattoo) aren’t good.

  11. danielle says:

Not her best look, but she is a beautiful girl.

  12. Heinz says:

I like her. I don’t know why? But I really like her.

  13. LittleDeadGrrl says:

I love the dress as well. It’s not one everyone can pull off but it works. I don’t mind the whole look. It’s not amazing and I’d hate it at the oscars but it works here.

  14. mar says:

    I am totally into her!!!!!!!!

  15. Nance says:

Maybe she should stop lift eyebrows and relax her jaw. She’s pretty, but that way she almost looks like Kelly Osborne… I love her skin color and grey nails here.

    • Lex says:

Yep, agree. The last few pics I’ve seen of her she has had a strange facial expression – very tense face… relax it Evan!! (and grow your hair longer…)

  16. Nance says:

But the haircut reminds me too much of Dennis Hopper in the Super Mario Bros movie…

  17. Erin says:

she’s gorgeous, but i do prefer her with long hair for some reason.. good dress though!

  18. GoodCapon says:

    The nail polish is gorgeous!

  19. kaligula says:

the dress is nice. hair…ummmm, i see what she was going for but no. does anyone else think she resembles vivian leigh? face-wise, i mean. ms. leigh was inimitable, of course, and this young actress is fine but let’s face it, they just don’t make them like that anymore…..

Whoa…ERW is going to prom in 1998
