We saw the black and white trend last night with actresses in bold dresses on both sides of the spectrum. First off we have Kate Winslet in satin black and white Jenny Packham. It feels like she’s phoning it in. The dress looks a little too cocktail party for an awards show, and it’s just not very daring. Plus it seems like Kate always does her hair like that, and would it kill her to look less smug? I do love her accessories though, that Fred Leighton bracelet is killer. Kate won Best Actress in a Miniseries for “Mildred Pierce,” and her acceptance speech was kind of formal and sounded a bit faux humble, but it wasn’t bad. (You can watch it below) She went to the awards with her new piece, Richard Branson’s nephew Ned Rock N Rolla. That’s really the guy’s name.
Also in black and white last night was Claire Danes, in sleek formfitting J. Mandel. I love the modern style of her dress and found it very flattering. I didn’t like her makeup though, and thought her lipstick was too garish. I know that bold red colors are a trend this season, but her makeup looks “off” to me somehow. Claire won Best Actress for Homeland, which Kaiser has been watching and tells me is incredible. I’ve also heard rave reviews from other friends, and know that President Obama is a fan. Claire brought her mother with her to the Globes and gave a very sweet acceptance speech, saying that she’d forgotten to thank her parents when she won her first Globe at 15 and that she wanted to make up for it. Homeland also won for Best TV series, which just reminds me that I need to start watching it.

yep you’re right..Kate irritates me …she’s always claiming to be 100% natural..yet she had a nosejob after titanic and she’s jacking her face with fillers..her dress is hideous..she’s a curvy woman and that dress does nothing for her.

Loved Kate’s hair and makeup. And to me Claire never gets it quite right. She seems to have a knack for choosing styles that make her upper body seem linebacker-esque. She would really benefit from something softer, imo.
Homeland is the best show this year. Best show of all shows in a long, long, long time. It’s ADDICTIVE. Claire Danes is amazing in it, as is the character Saul.

Yes, I was thinking perhaps if it had long sleeves it would look better. I liked the way the skirt fit her curves, the top killed it, and not in a good way.
Yikes! Danes looks incredibly harsh! That make up really ages her. The dress is okay, but pretty forgettable.
I usually love Winslet, but that dress is not flattering. She is a beautiful woman, but I agree that she is phoning it in here. Such a shame.
I used to love kate winslet so much!!! now she has a permanent smug face that bothers me so much, she has a severe bitchface case. Why trying to look sleek ad ladylike she ends up lookin way too matronly and not pretty at all!

I agree. I want to love KW, mainly bc I am obsessed with ‘The Holiday’ and her character Iris. But, she looks completely smug here, whether that’s intended or not…and she’s been a jerk about the “I’m so natural” thing.
I think Claire is very sweet and humble. I don’t care what she looks like, will always be a hug fan of hers!
Claire Dane’s dress looked absolutely ravishing to me on the tv.
Danes is on my petsonal best dressed list with Emma Stone who looked amazing, followed by Juliane Moore with and Williams (with or without headband she was radiant) Natalie Portman worst dressed. Jolie- surprise and I kinnda liked it a lot on her.
Danes looked somewhat clownish with the hair & make-up & was a little surprised the J Mendel dress fit do poorly on top. I didn’t really like Kate’s dress but she is an incandescent beauty, & seems like such a lovely person
Clare Danes make-up is horrible, she seems older! Kate is okay, she should change her hairstyle sometimes.
I love Claire Danes, she’s been my girl crush for so long! Bad lip stick but adore the dress…she’s like Emma Stone for me, can do no wrong 🙂

Is it just me who thinks Kate is channeling Madonna? I saw the second pic and had to scroll back up b/c wouldn’t have read a Madonna fashion comparison article. Never before noticed or thought they look so much alike. That being said, if I think Kate looks like Madge here then Claire is the winner!

I hated Danes’ dress! And some people cannot wear red lipstick- she is one of them. A softer color would have been better.
To me, Winslet always looks nice and is very well-spoken. But Ned RocknRoll has to go.
Like Clare Danes’ dress,hate her hair and makeup though, wish she would get rid of that tacky blonde but she seems committed to it. I actually kinda prefer Kate’s dress even though it makes her look hippy, and as for her smugface well the header shot is literally taken up her nose so don’t see how she could look anything but!
Claire Danes really did a great acting job in Homeland.
Mildred Pierce is awesome. And btw, Kate’s body is in great shape in it, like the poster child for unskinny fit ladies. (Also, her face is still quite mobile, so I retract anything I’ve said about botox.)

Kate looks super tweaked in that first photo. And I swear she has worn a dress almost EXACTLY like this one not too long ago.
Claire looks gorgeous, minus the lipstick which is a hot mess. The white bodice on the dress needs a little bit of tightening up, but otherwise quite beautiful and age appropriate.
And Homeland is awsome. I only started watching because it follows Dexter and I am addicted to MCHall. It is worth watching.

CD’s look was very good. She’s thin (due to being a vegan, I believe, not rexi) and looks fantastic in everything. Wasn’t crazy about the dark red lips tho.
I don’t care for either dress, but Claire’s was interesting from the back. Her red carpet makeup is always too harsh.

I was once a huge Kate Winslet fan but I feel like the fame and fortune has really gone to her head. I prefer the chubby Kate Winslet who was cute without trying too hard and smiled rather than give bitchface at every red carpet event. She’s definitely changed in the last decade and not in a good way at all. She looked okay last night. I tend to like most of her red carpet fashion but it’s starting to look like the same boring types of dresses.
I really like Claire’s dress.
The only really positive thing I have to say about these dresses, is that I liked Claires dress from the back. Otherwise its a yawn-fest.

I preferred Danes dress, I loved the back. I was okay with her makeup, she doesn’t seem to wear a ton, but they should have done her hair better. Am I the only one who thought she was high as a kite though?? LOL!

claiew used to look more manly and haggard, i guess she had that chin shaved a bit idk. they softened her look and she seems better now. kate’s brows are so botoxed i can’t even. why deny it at this point? that white bottom made it look like she gained weight again. and maybe she has, because if you’ve been fat once the fat cells will always be waiting to get big again. if she had a white shirt and a black skirt it would have looked much better. anyways it’s ok because big booties are in now

I think the dresses are awful. Danes is so pretty, but it’s all harsh and she has an angular face, so that’s really not a good look. And the colour blocking should be reversed on Kate Winslet, at a minimum. Black top and white bottom is only good if you’re built like a rake, IMO.
It feels like they both tried to look edgy and original and screwed up.
idk if her eyebrows are like that because of botox but i heard it can ruin the symmetry of one’s face. also heard that the new transformers’ chick has one lazy eye because botox gone wrong.
