Cate Blanchett in black Givenchy in Geneva: stunning or boring?

It’s always a good day when there are new photos of Cate Blanchett! La Blanchett was in Geneva to support something called the “IWC Top Gun Gala Event”. Don’t ask – I don’t know. I’m guessing that Cate and some other celebrities were probably paid to make appearances on behalf of whatever it is – and paid well, because they managed to get Blanchett, Adriana Lima and several other quality celebrities. I do know that Cate looked lovely and gorgeous in this sexy black Givenchy dress. On another woman, I would be bitching about the weird fabric thing down her chest, but, as always, Cate makes it work. I also love her hair these days – I love the length (just above her shoulders) and the color (not too blonde). Cate can pull off nearly anything, stylistically, but this current hairstyle is sophisticated and lovely on her.

And if that wasn’t enough eye candy, Ewan McGrgeor was also at the same event. Have Cate and Ewan ever worked together? They should! They should play lovers. That would be hot, wouldn’t it?

Love her, HATE the dress. The top is bizarre, the skirt hangs funny, black nylons??? No! And the shoes are circa 1990.
    From the neck up? Stunning.

  2. sasa says:

I much prefer her hair short or in a bob. But she always looks nice.

hate the dress, it looks cheap and whorish. the shoes are horrible and i really don’t like the black stockings (especially with open sandals), don’t like the color of the hair, with her super brown roots it seems like Cate missed a couple of appointments with her colorist. But Cate is lovely, love her and she is flawless everytime, so today i’ll forgive her for this missed opportunity of being super stylish again

CATE! I feel like I rarely see her onscreen nowadays. Up until 2008 or so, she appeared in at least 3 movies/yr.

If that’s her choice, great, but I wonder if hitting the big 4-0 since then has affected how many good parts she gets offered.

Out of the current crop of actresses, I saw her as having the best shot at a Streep-esque career (meaty, starring roles into her 60s). I hope she doesn’t go the way of Kidman instead (to name an A-list actress who went from playing many big quality parts in her 30s to…a serious downgrade in her 40s).

    • Seagulls says:

I wonder how much of Kidman’s slide was due to the fact that her cosmetic work completely altered her look, whereas if Blanchett and Streep have had work it’s of the subtle, Tom Cruise-y, enhancing variety. Well, that and Hollywood’s discomfort with women. I miss Cate, too.

Didn’t she have baby #3 or 4? That can slow her down.

  5. RocketMerry says:

    God, she’s awesome. Sigh…
Side note, when is the next Elizabeth movie due?! She was amazing in the first two, I can’t wait for the completed trilogy. It feels like almost 10 years from the last one, now.

    • D says:

The director wants to do a third one, but according to an interview I read with him, it’s not looking good since the 2nd one did poorly at the box office (and didn’t really impress critics either).

      • RocketMerry says:

        Oh, man! That’s not fair.
Let’s hope somebody gives up some good money for the third movie. I’ll bet Geoffrey Rush has some black mail info that can be used. *tananaaaaa*

    • taxi says:

How? More of the middle of her life? She died at the end of the second one.

      • RocketMerry says:

        ?
I don’t think Elizabeth died at the end of The Golden age… but thanks, this gives me an excuse to watch it again tonight! =)

The only thing I like about the this entire look is the jewelry.

    CATE!!!

It wouldn’t even matter if she wore a potato sack to an event, it’s always her personality that’s the main attraction.

I like her make-up a lot, and the hair color.

Off topic in a way, but because it’s about black on a post where there’s black in the title: I like today’s banner immensely, and I think a lot more big sites should have been switched off today in protest of SOPA. Occupy the internet in the name of free speech!

  8. podzol says:

Queen Cate’s dress is terrible, it pains me to say. But Ewan! Oh Ewan can do no wrong in his sartorial choices.

  9. lucy2 says:

I don’t like the dress, but it doesn’t matter, she always looks stunning, never boring!

I think she’s been spending a lot of time with their theater in Sydney, and working on the Hobbit. I hope to see her in more stuff too, she’s such a wonderful actress.

  10. ladybert62 says:

Sorry but that dress looks like it is schizophrenic – ruffles or straight? Straight or ruffles? It is horrible.

    The shoes are also horrible

    AND

    dont forget the awful hair.

Sorry Cate – this was a total mess.

  11. Zelda says:

Hair and shoes both are hideous.
    I’m torn on the dress.

    Ewan McGregor’s suit though? Brilliant.

  12. Jules says:

Love Cate…and I’m happy to see Ewan in nice shiny shoes.

  13. Lindy says:

She looks great–and I love the detail on the top half of the dress. The bottom half doesn’t seem to fit properly or it’s cut strangely. But she’s always beautiful and elegant!

  14. Girl says:

The dress looks a bit vaginal/inner-labial down the front. She is a lovely lady and goddess on-screen but this dress isn’t very good. The shoe and stocking situation is just a mess

  15. I believe she is head of the Sydney Opera House theater dept. She went back to her roots.

  16. Dee Cee says:

Meh.. it would have worked if she had bothered to wash and style her hair for a formal fashion.. get the dress tailored to fit.. but she just moves past these boring publicity events after a quick few poses.. she’s all that, but actually very ordinary.. ya know.

  17. Sumodo1 says:

Hubert deGivenchy never would have designed that black monstrosity. Cate, it’s time for a new stylist. Oh, I forgot to mention she’s doing the cross-legged pose that makes her look like she’s gotta go gotta go gotta go right now!

  18. meme says:

    Mostly unflattering.

  19. Stubbylove says:

Don’t mind the dress or hair – the shoes have got to go though. Still love Cate.

  20. NM9005 says:

    Blanchett is god!

  21. aprayerforthewildatheart says:

Cate is a stunning woman no matter what. The dress is okay, I don’t like her hair it looks like it’s at an in-between stage.

  22. Amy says:

I can kind of get behind the quasi-menswear/kind of vulvular top of the dress, but from the knees down it’s a big ol’ mess. I probably would’ve liked this look better in a floor length.

  23. I Choose Me says:

Don’t like the shoes but I really like the dress for some reason. Love her.

  24. aggielena says:

just to watch her in “Notes on a Scandel” and “Heaven” is enough for me….simply sublime….

  25. stephanie says:

she’s beautiful! don’t love the dress though.

  26. Ginger says:

I absolutely adore Cate she can do no wrong! I wish I were as pretty as she is. And Ewan is stunning…yum!
