Adele sweeps the Grammys, gets standing ovation: well-deserved?

God, I love Adele. I was so happy for her last night. The Adele-centric evening started with her interview on 60 Minutes, which was absolutely charming. She cussed up a storm, she showed Anderson Cooper around her barely furnished house, she challenged him (“Do you have a pool?”), she sang to him, and she cracked him up. I love her Cockney accent. I love her spirit. I love HER!!!!

And then right after that, the Grammys started and it was clear that Adele was the girl of the moment. LL Cool J referenced Adele at the very start of the show, and it just felt like everyone knew it was her night. Lady Gaga seemed subdued. Beyonce didn’t even show up. Katy Perry and Rihanna both seemed to put on their professional faces and cheer Adele on. Shall we talk about Adele’s fashion? Her dress is Armani – it’s okay. I think she probably just wanted to wear something comfortable and flattering, and didn’t care if it was fashion-forward. It seemed too obvious though – put the “big girl” in a long-sleeved black sack. As for her voice and her performance – here’s the video:

Beautiful. Her go-to song for all of her awards show performances last year was “Someone Like You” so it was good to hear her do “Rolling in the Deep”. I loved that she got a standing ovation, and everyone paid homage to her wonderful talent. And of course, Adele swept!!!!

It was an emotional night at the Grammy Awards, as the music world mourned the loss of a once-bright star yet celebrated the emergence – or rather, re-emergence – of one of its most dazzling young talents.

Adele’s domination of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards – she went six for six, winning everything for which she was nominated, including song, record and album of the year – allowed the industry to think of the future, not just the past. And it was particularly resonant given the British singer’s frightening trouble with her vocal chords over the past year.

“Mum, I love you. I’m so sorry you’re not here,” the singer, 23, said through sobs in accepting the album of the year award at the end of the night, her tears signaling relief as much as joy.

Her album, 21, was “inspired by something that is really normal and everyone’s been through it, which is a rubbish relationship,” she added. “And it’s gone on to do things that … I can’t tell you how I feel about it. It’s been the most life-changing year.”

Adele also dazzled at the show with her performance of “Rolling in the Deep,” her first major public singing engagement since having throat surgery for a hemorrhaged vocal chord.

She won best new artist and best female pop vocal performance at the 2009 Grammys, but Sunday was her true coronation – a great story on a night when her industry most needed one.

YAAAAAYYY!!!!! Come on, y’all. Let her have her moment. Let it be all about Adele right now, you know?

I like her I really do. She is refreshing and there is no useless gimmicks in her act. Go girl.

    • 30Minutes With Mike Rowe says:

Did you notice that she invited colleagues up to the stage with her to accept each award? Her humility and talent are refreshing. The opposite of Madonna’s self-absorbed acceptance speech last month. Adele is genuine and talented, and has a great maturity for her age. I hope she’s around forever.

  2. chaka khan says:

I love her but people are gonna get sick of her, ya know?

    • Jaye says:

I’m not. I love her voice, I love ’21’ and getting to see her personality made me love her that much more.

    • Mi says:

Sick of real talent? I don’t think so lol. This broad showed up and showed these vapid little pop princesses what REAL singing and real talent is. She’s a classic, one for the ages. Do you think Sh!*ney Spears writes her own lyrics and would have to cancel a show because her voice wasn’t working? Puh-lease. Long live Adele.

      • Kimbob says:

You make a very good point! Point well taken. No…we’ll never know if Britney’s having an “off” voice day. I can’t believe people pay what they do to see such a sloppy show, and are actually listening to recorded tracts….unbelievable.

        Adele’s voice is great.

    • Angel says:

      Nope, never.

She isn’t the gimmick of the moment being pushed down people’s throats (like say, gaga). She’s the real deal, that is why she is loved. People don’t get tired’ of that.

    • Linney says:

The great thing about her is she wants to take about 4 years off so shebcan write fresh new music and people won’t get sick of her. She’s not just good, she’s smart.

    • MrsNix says:

It’s true that they overplayed the hell out of a couple of her songs, but being tired of a single track does not lead to being tired of the singer.

If I never hear Someone Like You ever again, that is fine by me, but I adore listening to Adele sing in general. So…no, I don’t think people are tired of HER.

  3. Franny says:

I, as we all know by now, just love her.

These pictures don’t really do her justice – she is much prettier in action. The pictures make the blond a bit harsh, but she just looked so beautiful last night during the show. Her eye make up is amazing. Loved how shook up she was during the last award.

I loved everything about her performance dress except the slip underneath – it was distracting. But the polka dots were super cute and her hair looked amazing.

…but I still hate those nails. They look like the would hurt. Bet you can’t wear contacts with those suckers on your hands!

    • Samigirl says:

I can’t do nails. I’m too much of a tomboy. For my wedding, of course, I had to have them…had to have pretty hands for the pictures. I’ll be damned if it didn’t take me about 30 minutes to get each contact lens in with those damn nails.

Has anyone seen the SNL “Adele” skit? It’s freaking hysterical and pretty accurate.

    • the original bellaluna says:

Just wanted to let you know I have nails and I wear soft lenses. I’ve had nails for so long, I don’t know how to do stuff WITHOUT them! 😀

      • Samigirl says:

You’re my hero, sister. The next day, I soaked my nails in acetone and got rid of those suckers. $50 down the drain.

      • orion70 says:

Back when I still wore contacts I also had gel nails and I never had a problem with them. You just have to perfect the side of finger removal/insertion thing, that’s all ! Had no trouble typing with them either.

      • paranormalgirl says:

You’re my hero too. I can’t even go to the bathroom with nails.

Well, I mean, I can GO…. just not the cleanup afterward.

  4. brin says:

Yes! She sounded amazing and she looked beautiful! So glad she swept the Grammys!

  5. Jessica says:

YAY Adele!!! I watched last night only for her!! Way to go!!

  6. heatheradair says:

Holy Evan Rachel Wood lookalike — the cheeks, I think. Put her in blonde hair (I miss the red) and she *really* smacks of ERW. In a good way – ! But I never noticed it before…….

  7. Heather says:

Yay for Adele! She looked and sounded incredible. And everyone in the room seemed to genuinely like her and acknowledge that she is the bomb.

  8. Julie says:

Really like her and think she deserved it all last nite.

  9. gobo says:

    Louboutin nails!

    • Mi says:

I thought the same thing.when I saw the red underside! Lol! Is this a real thing now? Someone needs to fill me in. I’m a makeup artist but apparently out of touch in the nail world LOL!

  10. carrie says:

i like her new look (and she looks more at ease with herself)and she has a great voice but i’m tired to hear her songs (as i’m tired of BEP or David Guetta)

  11. Dawn says:

You bet the right person won! I Luv that girl and love that voice. I only hope she stays grounded amid all the noise that must be happening in her life on a daily basis. That voice simply gives me goose bumps. She is the best of the best and only 23!

  12. Abby says:

Burberry spokespeople on Twitter said her dress with the pol a-dots is Burberry, just fyi. I loved that she won everything this year. It was her year.

That being said, I really loved Gaga’s outfit!

  13. maemay says:

Love her and those saying people will get sick of her…Rhianna NEVER takes a break and releases an album a year. Katy Perry release an album a year, both “artists” have tons of number one songs….NOONE is playing the sick of Rhianna and Katy Perry card.

Adele has only had two number ones and realeases an album every two years…IM NOT SICK OF ADELE!

    • Shelly says:

Thank you! And how is it Katy Perry is even nominated for a Grammy anyway?

      • lucy2 says:

I’d like to know that too – she’s too cutesy and shouty in most of her songs. Some of her music is fun to workout to, but the Grammys should be reserved for GOOD music.

  14. Shelly says:

She looked gorgeous! I loved her dress. It was sparkly and fitted at the waist and skimmed the rest of her body beautifully. I didn’t think it looked like a sack at all.

    • T.C. says:

Agreed. The dress is fitted and looks good. Love the new haircolor too. She is beautiful with both dark and blonde hair. Congratulations to her, very well deserved.

      • Hmmm says:

Armani is all about drape. The first dress looked fabulous on Adele, she was just stunning. It looked fantastic when she was in motion. The little sparkles showed up well under the lights without being glitzy against a night sky of deepest velvety black fabric. Very simple, tasteful and perfect for her style.

  15. Maria_Spain says:

    Beautiful girl and voice.

  16. kc says:

Black sack? I think not. Otherwise all the other “skinny” actresses have been sacked too. I’m glad Adele “sacked” them with her talent and won!

  17. DemoCat827 says:

Adele is my girl! I think Mr. DemoCat finally understands her appeal after her “60 Minutes” interview and her Grammy performance. She deserves every good thing coming her way!

  18. lucy2 says:

I’m so happy for her – she definitely deserved that standing ovation – she’s a true talent who did an amazing performance, and I think people were also recognizing that she did all that after throat surgery too.
I thought she looked great, though I preferred her previous hair color to the blonde. I liked both dresses on her a lot, except for the slip? that was under the polka dot one and showed up in the right light.

  19. Faye says:

Yay for Adele winning! And thanks for saying the Grammys’ focus should be on Adele. While Whitney Houston’s death was tragic, it was entirely preventable and, ultimately, her fault. I was sorry that all the focus was on her; I’d rather the media paid attention to someone who’s not only talented but NOT a drug addict, i.e. Adele.

  20. Lindy says:

It’s hard to get sick of genuine, really stellar talent. I mean, sure, I may change the song if it pops up on my ipod and I feel in the mood for something else, but she’s an artist I think most people who love music will want to come back to again and again. Go Adele!

    • JM says:

Which is why Paul McCartney, The Beach Boys & Bruce Springsteen were so well received. I doubt anyone will remember who Katy Perry & Niki Minaj are in another 40 years.

      • TG says:

I agree 1000%. Adele is awesome and the real deal. No smoke and mirrors here like most of the “performers” of today. I was thinking about that and most of the true legends are remembered for their voice alone not their antics. I am wondering why people like Lady Gaga, Niki Manaj, etc. can’t be accepted for their voice alone. Would we even care to hear Gaga sing on stage like a normal person? I don’t think so. She doesn’t have a bad voice but it is nothing special like Adele’s. I just hope Adele remains humble or at least honest. The Brits are my favorite group of people but I am so tired of Kate Winslet’s false modesty and surprise every time she wins an award.

      • bluhare says:

        Paul McCartney really surprised me!

  21. friendly flea says:

Congrats ADELE you truly deserve these awards I’m happy for you.

  22. Melissa says:

I want to be her friend SO badly!!! Is she wearing an engagement ring? That’s a really pretty ring on her left hand….

    • Franny says:

I was thinking the same thing – that I bet she would be awesome to have as a friend. So much fun.

And now that you point that out, it DOES look like an engagement ring! That would be interesting…

      • Mauibound says:

I’d love to be her friend too, such a charming personality. We can all travel with her and be her entourage!

  23. Tiffany27 says:

I LOVE her. Her voice is so soulful and timeless.
    Sigh.
I wish I was her friend lol.

  24. Kaboom says:

That accursed boyfriend did her a lot more good dumping her than he ever could by sticking around.

  25. Jules says:

I love her even more after seeing her interview with Anderson Cooper.

  26. Jaded says:

Attention Katy Perry, Rihanna, Britney, etc. etc., this is real music, not some overly-synthesized, processed Cheez Whiz crap out of a can that’s been written by someone else and run through a million machines to make it sound like you can actually sing – you won’t catch Adele lip-syncing.

  27. Anne de Vries says:

Mad love for her. Hilarious interview. I just wish they would do her hair a little less over the top huge.

  28. fabchick says:

She deserved it. 21 is a classic album, even after a year I listen to traxks from it DAILY. Luv her.

  29. kpist says:

I love how real she is, for instance, when she snotted on herself and told the audience, she’s awesome. Could you imagine the fakies doing something like that

  30. Danziger says:

    Eh.

Just eh. I can summarise my feelings with ‘eh’. Not a particularly disappointed eh, but not an overly cheerful one either. I still fail to get her charm. There are better voices out there, although Adele’s solid good. And love songs simply don’t do anything for me, maybe I’m that cold-hearted. So I guess good for her for sweeping the Grammys.

  31. Jennifer says:

What’s not to love? Great voice, talented writer, authentic down-to-earth personality…she looks and sounded great!

  32. Julia says:

Adele is amazing and I love all of her songs! I think she definitely deserved all the awards! Go, Adele!!

  33. NM6804 says:

Beyoncé wasn’t there because she tried to steal the light by showing her baby on a Friday but Houston’s death put an end to that. To save face, she didn’t show up at all (why? To get humiliated by the attention Adele and Houston got? Beyoncé doesn’t share).

Glad for Adele, hopefully more artists who have integrity (they exist!) will win at these awards. She deserved it. I found her dress pretty too and no not because it “hides” her figure (it even hugs her waist), skinny people wear sacks too so what’s their excuse. It’s a good dress and that’s all. I love her more with red hair though.

  34. Mar says:

She is simply amazing- and her performance was out of this world!!!!!

  35. aenflex says:

    Yay!!!

  36. Stubbylove says:

Love her – loved last night – well-deserved – love the red lips on the carpet.

  37. toto says:

does any one thinks her face is so much as brook shields in her prime?

  38. Day says:

I love Adele and I am so glad she won ALL her awards. But, I must say, I am really starting to wonder if she is only 23. She looks so much older. I don’t know if they are purposely doing this to make her appeal to an older audience but she does not look 23.

  39. ds says:

I can’t stop looking at her face. She’s so lovely

  40. flutters says:

    So happy for Adele!

She looked great (photos are definitely harsher than how she looked on TV).

Her performance shows her voice, though not in prime form is still fantastic. What I loved about her performance is she sang great, and she showed an awareness of how big this moment is for her while cheekily kissing off the ex. Did you all catch the lyric change? “You could’ve had it all” She delivered it with this mischievous smile so it wasn’t mean, it was just funny, and you could tell she was just happy to be singing.

What a graceful, gracious winner. Real singing talent, real writing talent, and a great personality to go along with it (if I didn’t mention her beauty, it’s just because that’s an unnecessary bonus).

  41. cecizahn says:

Hopefully we never get sick of her. She’s really a talented girl.
Do you think weight comments are finally getting to her? Coz it seems that she lost weight

    • LAK says:

She had throat surgery. Would be hard to eat solids for a while. Also she may have temporarily given up the beers. It’s amazing how slimmer you become when you are not guzzling down the beers.

    • Ashley says:

I was thinking the same! But it definitely could have been from the surgery and being unable to eat properly. Plus, she does say in the interview that she stopped drinking in May. 20lbs just DROPPED off me once I stopped drinking.

  42. original kate says:

could she be any more awesome?

  43. Cerulean says:

Love this cockney songbird. I like that she went up, sang her heart out and said:
See it’s all about the voice. You don’t need to look like a hooker, wear outlandish trashy clothing or have bad dance routines. You don’t have to exist on Ensure nor thrust your pelvis in our faces. Get a good song and just sing it !!!!!!
I like that my young daughter can watch her performances with me.

I’m proud of my hometown girl and I like that she doesn’t try to posh up her accent like so many of my countrymen do. Kate Middleton and her phony aristocratic accent-yes I mean you.

  44. Brittney says:

Did anyone else catch how she changed the lyrics to “you could have had THIS all” while gesturing toward herself? Such emotion, and it was empowering just watching her… whoever triggered that song, Adele’s sure laughing now, and she knows it.

  45. Rita says:

Adele seemed relaxed last night and was having genuine fun. The picture of her smiling with her arms full of Grammys was the best I’ve seen of her. Keep it all going honey.

  46. Ana says:

She looked beautiful, and different, something about her changed, more than her hair colour, either way this woman looks better in real life without the photoshop that in the magazines.

I haven’t watched her sing live that much, only her videos and albums, but correct me if I am wrong, but it seemed to me that when trying to reach a note she lost control of her voice and she did this “funny” thing to keep on singing, hopefully it was a one time thing and her voice will keep being as good as ever.

  47. Delta Juliet says:

Up until last night, Mr. Juliet didn’t “get” Adele….didn’t care for her songs too much and asked me if she was “the big girl”. Then he heard/saw her belt out Rolling in the Deep and he was like “You know? You don’t see singers anymore. It’s all dancing and show and pretty girls, but no great voices”. And I was like “Yeah! Why do you think she’s getting so much play? She just gets out that and belts out her songs. And sounds AMAZING”

It’s a nice change of pace from the Katy Perry’s and such. I do like them for entertainment and fun, but for a true, singing voice, give me Adele. Plus I think she’s gorgeous. She may be big in relation to the size 00’s, but for Pete’s sake, she’s hardly fat.

  48. DetRiotGirl says:

I know I’m in the minority here, but I just don’t get the excitement over Adele. Her music has been so incredibly overplayed for the last year. I swear, part of me wants to run out of the room everytime I hear “rolling in the deep”.

I have to admit, I’ve never cared for her music. Yes, she has a lovely voice. But, there’s something about her that I just don’t connect with. Everyone I know is so in love with her though, I almost feel guilty for not understanding what they think the big deal is. Personally, I find her rather boring.

Still, when one looks at the utter crap she was competiting with last night (Rihanna won twice? Really? Also, Chris Brown won a Grammy? WTF?!?), she was clearly the best musician of the night and on that level I’m glad she won.

  49. Coucou says:

YES YES YES!!! I am so happy for Adele and so thrilled that in this day and age we can still witness true art and talent, it’s been a long time imo since someone’s come along like her…the last commenter can’t connect with Adele, and that’s ok, it’s not like everyone’s obligated to be a fan…in my case, however, i have to watch it, as i’m TOO connected, and if i listen to “Someone Like You” before my period i am DOOMED for about a week.

GO ADELE! Get thee to a studio and PRODUCE! (please!?) PLEASE!!!

  50. Happy21 says:

I knew she’s win! She has it all right now and I’m thrilled for her. I love her. I thinks he is such a breath of fresh air. She is just such a humble artist.

I don’t think any of the artists she was up against really thought they stood much of a chance. They knew the cards were stacked against them.

I am not sick of her at all. LOL, actually the complete opposite. I put “21” back in my car stereo last week and am enjoying it so much even though I know every beat to every song. I am also listening to “19” on my ipod right now too!!

After I saw her perform last night. I was thinking that the world may be mourning the loss of Whitney Houston, but this girl is a force to be reckoned with. I think that is what got her the standing ovation. People know true talent when they see it and in the wake of Whitney’s death, this is just what the industry needed. Another woman with a powerful voice.

  51. Nina says:

I’m so glad our generation got a chance to enjoy a real musical talent. I thought that was lost. Now it’s found

  52. kiki says:

Love her!!! She has such a organic talent. No wigs, no breast or butt implants, no blue or pink hair, no net over her face, no firecrackers or whip cream coming out of her breasts, no priests or exorcism crap!!!!! And that was crap! Just pure raw natural talent. I hope she is around for a long time. Such a breath of fresh air in the music industry.

  53. Kim says:

LOOOOOOVVVVEEEE that someone with talent and not just a schtick/act won. She looked gorgeous. Love her Armani dress. So classy. Class, beauty & talent. The ccomplete antithesis of Rhianna and Katy Perry!

  54. Amanda G says:

She is such a lovely, charming person! I’m so glad the Grammys got it right and awarded her appropriately!

I liked both dresses she wore during the night, but especially the 2nd one. She knows how to hide the unflattering parts of her body (I’m looking at you Christina Aguilera).

My only complaints are her hair and makeup. She’s too blonde now and I miss the long, beautiful hair (was it extensions?). Her makeup was WAY too heavy for such a young and pretty face. She’s only 23!! I wanted to wipe off that blush!

  55. Kim says:

She has NEVER sounded better than she did last night. Kudos to her.

  56. Meecey says:

Love everything about her! Especially that accent. You know you have got it goin on when Sir Paul McCartney gives YOU a standing O! You go Adele!

  57. Alibeebee says:

I remember her when she wasn’t a big star but I remember her voice that voice full of soul and emotion she has talent grace beauty she’s amazing!! Love love love her I also live the fact that she’s modest in how she Lives, how she carries herself she knows that it’s not all her and most of all how she dresses she is gorgeous and she doesn’t have to have every inch of skin exposed to be sexy alluring and beautiful I loved her dress I want it!

  58. Diane says:

She is truly talented, no gimmicks needed. So happy for her and I look forward to many more great songs.

  59. Laura says:

The only bad thing I can say about this is that you call her a cockney but she’s from south london (just needed to point that out cos she’s from my area and she’s done us proud!!)

    • Hmmm says:

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Everyone keeps saying it’s cockney, but I didn’t think so.
You have every reason to be proud.

    • lu says:

Agree. Just because she doesn’t speak like the Queen doesn’t make her a cockney! Just because Anderson Cooper said it, doesn’t make it right.

  60. original sandy says:

yes, she deserves all of them, there is no one else like her, her songs have meaning, she’s not over the top with her voice, christina a, mariah, crazy outfits..gaga,katy perry, nicky minja?

  61. Palermo says:

Unlike most of the acts where it’s all special effects, freaky costumes, and 867 backup dancers, she can just stand there and sing, a real talent, so yes she deserved it!

  62. Anna says:

Never realized her eyes were that light.

  63. the original bellaluna says:

Take THAT, MTV awards! THIS is what an awesome voice and real music sound like. (You remember music, yeah? It’s what the “M” in your initials stands for.)

  64. LeeLoo says:

Did she lighten her hair color? I don’t like it.

Can you believe my mom had not heard Adele’s voice until I COMMANDED that she listen to Rolling in the Deep on Saturday? My mom gasped and said “how can that voice be coming out of that little girl?” It was funny witnessing someone else’s reaction to hearing Adele for the first time.

    • Hmmm says:

I heard her for the very first time last week on Graham Norton’s show. And was blown away. It’s so exciting to discover her! 🙂 I’m an opera geek so her voice was a revelation especially in a sea of musical dreadfulness and mediocrity.

  65. Madison says:

Well deserved! Her voice is amazing and she looked stunning in that dress.

  66. Camille (The original) says:

I didn’t think it was possible to love this girl any more than I do, but I LOVED that interview. She is so freakin adorable, beautiful, funny and talented, sigh. I will never get enough of her.

And to think Adele is only like a year or so older than Taylor Swift! Give me Adele over the likes of the Swifts and Katie Perrys etc of this world any day.

  67. bamabrasileira says:

meh -she was all right. her backup singers were awesome!

  68. paranormalgirl says:

I went from being annoyed by her existence to actually listening to her music and falling in love with her voice.

  69. molly says:

I LOVE HER! I think she pulled out “Rolling in the Deep” last night because her voice was finally well enough to pull it off, as it wasnt before.

  70. orion70 says:

I lol’d a little at the “behind the scenes look, sponsored by Viagra”.

She’s adorable and gives me serious hair envy. I would be seriously creeped out in that house though.

  71. Chris says:

Weird night for Adele. What should of been a night that was all about her was overshadowed by the death of Whitney Houston but on the other hand Whitney’s death probabaly raised the profile of the event.

  72. Orange Cone says:

    F*&^ YEAH, LOVE ADELE! ♥♥♥

  73. Amy says:

Wowza. Adele looks absolutely stunning during that live performance. She should’ve worn her make-up like that on the red carpet!

  74. i says:

no way she should have won all the awards for a cd thats is 2 years old almost.

  75. Erin says:

homegirl is rocking the red lip. love her

  76. Fishlips says:

She was beautiful. I loved the dress she wore during her performance.

  77. Green_Eyes says:

So happy for Adele! Well deserved, she’s humble, gracious, looked stunning, and most of all she has pure true talent! No gimmicks, no dancing all around so she can lip sync, and no little barely there or shock value costumes…just that amazing voice and she’s got looks to top it off. There’s also the fact she seems like someone I could o hang out w/ after a show & have a girls night out! Love her!

  78. cutlery says:

finally, a singer who doesn’t need auto tune gets recognition!

  79. Seahorse says:

Adele is so bland, her songs are awful. This website clearly has bias against American performers such as Lady Gaga and Beyonce. Every time Gaga is mentioned, this site only has nasty things to say about her. However, it kisses adele’s fat ass every chance it gets. Try finding an article with something negative about adele on this website. She is overplayed waaay too much. Her songs get old too quickly and all sound the same. Please use a more neutral site for information, as this website is complete garbage.
