Leo DiCaprio: “Pretentious women really turn me off. Vindictive women, too”

Leonardo DiCaprio has a new interview with The Sun. It’s one of those bizarrely-written pieces that The Sun is getting famous for – like, they just accumulate all of the quotes from a celebrity in an interview, and put it together like a first-person essay. I only hooked onto this piece because Leo is kind of making his dude-issues front and center. Meaning that he spends a lot of time talking about the main woman in his life: his momma. Now, I don’t hate momma’s boys as a general rule. And Leo does detail his mother’s lifelong struggles and why she’s the main woman in his life, and some of it is rather sweet. But he also talks about girlfriends and what “turns him on” in a woman, and it becomes increasingly clear that Leo isn’t going to be settling down any time soon, and why would he? He will never find a woman as awesome as his mom. Maybe he doesn’t realize it?

Leo on his mom: “My mom, Irmelin, taught me the value of life. Her own life was saved by my grandmother during World War Two. When she was a toddler a broken leg had landed her in a German hospital. Refugees and soldiers were also in the hospital and she ended up contracting several major illnesses and stayed for two and a half years. My grandmother (Helene, who died in 2008, aged 93) came every day and nursed her back to health — the nurses did not have time. They basically left her for dead. When you see a picture of her, it’s heartbreaking. It brings tears to my eyes knowing what she has been through in her life. I have a picture, her first photograph, with this tiny little skirt. She is emaciated with a big belly. She had a belly full of worms.”

Parental guidance: “You do need parental guidance and I was in a great position with both my mum and dad. They split when I was a baby but even though I stayed with my mom they were both very much involved in my upbringing. It means I can enjoy wide interests. It made me want to travel, scuba dive, collect art, take classes in art and every place I travel I check out the museums. I have enjoyed watching wildlife in Africa and South America, far from Hollywood. My mom also taught me to get everything in perspective. I never got to the point when I was mean and cruel to people.”

He’s a clown for hire: “”I realize that I do not change the course of history. I am an actor, I do a movie, that’s the end of it. You have to realize we are just clowns for hire. After I had success it was great, at first, not to worry about money. It was on my mind when I was growing up. Just being able to buy my grandmother some scarves she wanted and not have to think about it was a sign of good times. It sounds corny but it gave me happiness at the time.”

Leo’s loves: “My first love? Boy, I don’t even remember. I suppose if I’d found my true love I would be married right now, wouldn’t I?”

Leo‘s turnoffs: “Pretentious women really turn me off. Vindictive women, too. So do opportunistic women. I think what turns me on about a girl is what most men find attractive — which is something genuine about them. Being a good person.”

He did Titanic because of Kate Winslet: “Titanic? I would love to say I predicted it would be one of the biggest hits in film history. I didn’t — and wondered whether I should do it at all. I resisted it for a long time because I had been offered the film Boogie Nights (about the 1970s porn industry, a role finally taken by Mark Wahlberg). The fact that Kate Winslet said “yes” was the final decider. She was awesome. We were definitely shoulders for each other to lean on. We had to be partners on the film. All the complaining in the world was done between us two, so we did not have to vent it on anyone else. But I am so glad to be part of that movie. Years from now, people will still be watching that film. I am part of something historical, in a lot of ways. It gave me so many opportunities, as an actor, to steer the course of my own destiny. I was able to take both my mother and grandmother to the world premiere of Titanic in London — one of my proudest moments.”

[From The Sun]

So even though he’s dating someone – 22-year-old Erin Heatherton – he won’t call her a “true love” and Leo gives the impression that he’s still waiting for lightning to strike. If you were Erin, wouldn’t this be a signal that you’re his “Just For Now” Girl? As for Leo’s turnoffs – pretension, viciousness, opportunism…? And of course, you have to be genuine. A genuine supermodel, that is. Does Leo even believe what he’s shilling?

    hehehe …yeah

But well, it sounds like he’s being honest. And I like that.

    • Sloane Wyatt says:

ALL WOMEN turn him off, except for Lukas Hass!

    • only1shmoo says:

Well, partially. His “ideal woman” should be non-pretentious, genuine, sweet AND a supermodel (or a swimsuit model, or a Victoria’s Secret model) under the age of 25! Keep reaching for the stars, Leo; some men can be really shallow, but you certainly aren’t one of them (sarcasm hand raised so high almost touches the ceiling).

    • Turtle Dove says:

I believe that these are a mish-mash of quotes from various interviews and not necessarily from one sit down. To judge him from an odd assortment of interviews over the course of 15 years would be silly because the article obviously has a slant and only quotes that suit the leanings of the article are used. I’m cutting him some slack on this one.

    • Brooke says:

      Dear KAISER and everyone else,

Just because I value this website more than others- the snark is priceless- I’m going to go ahead and let you guys in on something:

This interview is almost 12 years old. It was originally printed in 2000 and I believe it was in Heat magazine. So, while most of this stuff is still relevant (he’s very much a mama’s boy to this very day), it was pre-Gisele/Bar/Boobs Legsly/etc. and certainly pre-Bloat face. I believe this was around the time he was promoting The Beach.

Just so Celebitchy can continue to uphold it’s journalistic integrity and remain my gossip bible, I think you should clarify that this interview is in fact NOT new.

You can check out the original interview here: http://www.imagebam.com/image/9f07c0179623265

  2. carrie says:

    unless he’s honest!

OT: the pics must be old because since one year,he’s slim

  3. Eve says:

Funny that he hates opportunistic women but keeps dating them…

Ok, let me translate this part of his interview:

“Pretentious women really turn me off.

Any woman who knows how much is 2 + 2.

    Vindictive women, too.

Any woman who knows how much is 2 + 2 and makes sure I know about that.

    So do opportunistic women.

Potential girlfriends (a.k.a. Victoria’s Secrets’s models), take note: don’t ask me to take you to the Oscars.

I think what turns me on about a girl is what most men find attractive

    Boobs.

which is something genuine about them. Being a good person.”

    Boobs.

  4. Naomi says:

He is honest. And I’m sure his young “flavour of the season” (Erin) knows that he’s just having a good time for now and is enjoying good moments with him. He is certainly not considering a future with her for sure. Leo does not like to be without a girl by his side. Besides, she’s so young.

  5. Dana M says:

Leo was acting camera shy in Austin recently. However, Toby M was lovely according to this post.

    http://digitaltexan.net/2012/atx-gossip/mobli-party-hosts-leonardo-dicaprio-and-tobey-maguire/article29089/#.T18yVol5mc0

    • carrie says:

i always don’t understand what he did at Austin but he always was camera(photo)-shy.
Last year when he was at Cannes,he came to several public parties and no photographer was authorized to take his pic .
During INCEPTION french filming,he came with friends in VIP Room (french club)and the ones who were able to approach him were his friends and the pretty girls.

      • Just me says:

But in Austin he was suppose to host that party together with Tobey. Instead he sneaked in through the backdoor with girlfriend-on-call in tow and separated himself from everyone except for his friends. Is that how you host a party. Some of his fans just keep coming up for excuses for him.

    • Dana M says:

I don’t understand why he was so frisky free with Blake Lively …disneyland photo op, their European vacation photo op, their mexico trip with friends photo op, etc, etc… But now he is back to his camera shy snobby ways. I still feel that the Leo/Blake relationship was a PR setup. We rarely hear and see Leo and his new Model GF in the tabloids. Smells fishy.

      • Sarko says:

Erm……the mexico photo op trips were with Erin not Blake. Ditto the zip lining pics, the LA and Sydney Park pics.
We have actually had more photos of Leo in hi early stages of this relationship than with Bar.
I think BLEO was so fascinating ( sob, I miss them) that every move was reported and monitored. Few are as interested in this one
And what Disney photo op of Leo and Blake? I recall Twitter sightings but no pics. And yes he has gone to Disneyland with Erin too. Very Ryan Goslingesque

  6. Astrid says:

Leo is starting to get a bit old and stale, in more ways than one!

  7. Cathy says:

I love him in Titanic. I’m not sure I’ll spend the money to go see it in 3D. It just seems like a money grab to me. As for the love of his life thing, I’m sure he’s just out to protect his fortune, like George Clooney. I don’t really see him ever getting married.

  8. Tapioca says:

And yet he dated Gisele for FIVE years! A woman reknowned for getting rival models fired from contracts – most famously Bar Refaeli – and letting us plebeans know that we should consider ourselves lucky just to be breathing the same air as her.

Sweet story about his mum & gran though, although I doubt he’s going to find a woman of similar callibre on the VS runway!

    • Gorry says:

That Gisele-Bar VS story is an urban myth
Bar DID do catalogue shoots for VS, but they decided they did not want her.
She was not their type as her runway is poor( hence why Bar never did High Fashion)and she does not have the legs.
Besides Gisele was already leaving VS the next year why would she care?

      • Tapioca says:

Gisele didn’t plan on leaving VS, they declined to renew her contract for being too greedy. There’s also numerous stories about her playing the “If you hire [insert name of younger, prettier model] I won’t work for you” card.

      • normades says:

Agree Gorry. Everyone thinks Bar has such a great body, but she really doesn’t – for a model. She wasn’t VS caliber.

  9. Leticia says:

He and Clooney need to start a commune.

  10. OMSS says:

” And of course, you have to be genuine. A genuine supermodel, that is.”

    LOL! Thanks, I needed that!

  11. minime says:

Hmm…his comment about what kind of women he likes sound quite ridiculous for someone whose only girlfriends are very young models and wannabe A-actresses…
As the time passes by, I see more of a George Clooney on him.
He could at least refrain himself from commenting, when it will sound so far away from his reality 😉

  12. Juliet says:

Yeah – like he knows a real woman when he sees one.

    • Esmom says:

Haha, I was thinking the same thing. When he won’t even let the common people approach him. I used to really like him and even found him hot in The Departed but now, meh.

      • I Choose Me says:

The Departed is the only movie where I thought he was kinda hot.

      • normades says:

The Departed was his best role. All the character roles he over acts in. I don’t think he’s the acting genius people make him out to be.

  13. Yeah says:

These quotes are old but it doesn`t really matter. He says one thing and does another. He doesn`t like pretentious women but he dated Blake Lively just to name one? He wants a woman like his mother and yet he is dating barely legal underwear models all the time? I didn`t know his mom was a VS angel or something.
`Does Leo even believe what he is shilling?` Great question! Does he or he is just selling an image?

  14. Sarko says:

    LOL
The Sun is getting desperate, they cobbled Leo quotes from 10 years ago and claim its an ‘exclusive interview’.
He made these remarks on women when he had just split with Kristen Zang during promo from The Beach.

    • Naomi says:

No. He did make these comments when he was dating Gisele Bundchen. It was somewhere in 2002-2003. I’ll try to find the interview. He said something similar to a French Radio show while promoting Catch Me If You Can. He mentioned if he had found love he would have been married by now. He was 27 or 28 at the time.

  15. madpoe says:

If Leo wants a “geniune” and a “good person”, maybe he should date outside the Hollywood cesspool?

    • Gwen says:

None of them really do, do they? *sigh*

    • Bella says:

Oh, please, as if regular people are much more honest than those in Hollywood. Truth is there are plenty of regular folk who are NOT 100% genuine and good at heart.

      • madpoe says:

oh i hear ya on that one Bella, but it seems no one cares when a celeb dates/marries a “regular” person so much? Or at least I can’t think of any right now.

  16. Gwen says:

I bet he’s a pig (about women) but honestly I think he sounds quite smart(-ish..) and also honest here. For a child star he’s doing pretty ok IMO.

  17. Franny says:

I think that was one of the sweetest interviews I’ve read. He really cares for his mother and grandmother, and appreciates the oppurtunities he has been given. This completely changed me into a bit of Leo fangirl.

  18. kristipistol says:

    “A genuine supermodel” hahahahahahaha

  19. Hautie says:

Yea! My favorite doughy, practically 40, frat boy!

Geez, his Mother has really screwed him up. I bet she has told him daily, how there is no woman good enough for him. Only his Momma is ever gonna love him… for the right reasons.

Plus she keeps control of his finances. 🙂 Cause you know there is no way he is taking care of his income. Or doing his own laundry.

And who wants to bet, he had a vasectomy years ago. So none of them dirty girls trapped this Momma’s-boy with a “un-planned” pregnancy.

  20. Olivia says:

I’m beginning to think that the only women Leonardo diCaprio is capable of respecting are his mother, his grandmother, and Kate Winslet.

    • mel says:

Ditto. I think he is kind of in love with kate winslet…jmo. What a slam to Gisele Bundchen – but I love it because I can’t stand her.

      • ahoyhoy says:

Agree about Leo & Kate….I think she was too wise to get involved officially w/Leo, in that she knew he had wild oats to sow. And sow. And sow.
He needs to keep Kate’s number for when he grows out of it, maybe after mommy passes on.

      • niloa says:

i agree. They ave an intense bond . I mean , i can’t go over this engraved ring he gave her , and that she wore with her wedding bands!

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Wasn’t she involved with her future first ex-husband at the time? I’d ask him what he thinks about the popular notion that KW wouldn’t cheat on a significant other…(*whispers* or surgery).

    • Kate #2 says:

I’m always slightly guarded about the whole Leo/Kate thing. Basically after Titanic she made a lot of small Brit movies, and because we don’t have many resident movie stars she got interviewed for our papers/magazines all the time. And at that time, she said she and he were too busy and didn’t talk anymore, what a shame. I remember her mentioning that she and her husband bumped into him accidentally in London when Leo was in a bar, in town for a movie premiere, and it was nice to be able to introduce them. I was a bit – wait, this amazing friendship, and you both visit the home town of the other fairly regularly… yet he’s never met your husband?

Then she got together with Sam Mendes who was at the time (just after American Beauty) this hotshot star director. And she gave an interview saying Leo had called her up saying how much he missed her, and how he wanted them to hang out again, and how lovely that was and how it was as if they’d never been apart. And then Kate turned into the new Meryl Streep – half Hollywood say she’s one of the greats, if an interviewer mentions her acting. And Leo has namechecked her as his BFF ever since.

He’s a wonderful actor. But he almost only dates models, appears interested in their vital stats more than essential characteristics, and has shown interest in Winslet proportionate to her Hollywood status, as far as I can see.

      • niloa says:

It’s an interpretation. But Leo doesn’t occur to me as someone who choose his friends because of their status. He has the same friends ,look at his friendship Kevin Connolly . Plus i remember this interview,in fact it was Leo who surprised Kate at Quills wrap -party, and she presented him her husband.

      • Kate #2 says:

I remember her saying pretty explicitly that it was an accidental crossover, not a planned meeting. She also said they didn’t talk these days and how it was a shame she’d not known he was in town, but oh well, another time. It didn’t sound like he’d been a surprise invitee, just that they’d both been in the same London bar the same night, no?

Honestly, I don’t know that much about her or him these days, because I don’t subscribe to Empire/Sight & Sound (the Brit movie journals) now, and she isn’t a local so isn’t a staple in the papers in the same way. But I remember that they both said they didn’t speak anymore. You can ascribe that to distance, to lives in different directions, to all kinds of things. Nonetheless, the one woman named as being someone he respects other than his mother is one he appears to have been in touch with when her career is going well. The names you can cite for long term genuine friends without star cachet are male – no? I’m sure he has great, longterm male friends without regard to status. But the issue raised in this thread is that he seems to have a questionable attitude to women.

Whatever, he’s still a very good actor and I’ll pay to watch his movies on that basis.

  21. Nev says:

    annoying.

  22. PaulB says:

…Pretentious women really turn me off. Vindictive women, too. So do opportunistic women…
No kidding? C’mon. So other regular guys prefer pretentious and vindictive women? LOL! Honestly. That answer is so cliché and vague.

  23. SS says:

Aw I like him. He sounds genuine….who cares if he only dates models? He can…..
    He likes nice models 🙂
He doesn’t sound like he takes himself seriously, which is what I find attractive.

  24. kibbles says:

There was a very short time frame where Leo was cute. Back in his Titanic days he was still young enough to pull off the baby face. Ever since then he has looked like a man boy. Not handsome at all in my opinion. He also sounds like another creep who is waiting to take Clooney’s title as a life long bachelor. Ironic that the terms pretension, viciousness, and opportunism could also be used to describe Leo and the way he goes from one supermodel or celebrity to the next. Yes, these women don’t date him for his looks but because of his fame and money. He invites them knowingly and willingly. Why even ask these stupid questions? He has probably been alright dating shallow and mean women in the past simply because they were hot. I think his actual turnoffs are normal looking women who don’t have supermodel looks.

    • Mauibound says:

Exactly, I just can’t take him seriously as an actor with that 12 year old face. Howard Hughes? Please J Edgar? Worse

  25. Day says:

Um…those are just the kind of women he date. I guess he purposely does that because he isn’t looking for someone long term or a serious relationship. IDK, I stop trying to understand Leo a long time ago. He isn’t hot to me anymore. So, whatever.

    More Prince Harry post PLEASE.

  26. Misty G says:

I don’t see what other women see in him.
    1) He has a smush face.

    2) An over bloated sense of self.

    3) He has a smush face.

    4) In almost every interview he talks about certain things like they are beneath him. He once said he was offered a RomCom role and he stated “he doesn’t do those” Like he’s too good for that. Maybe he should because J.Edgar didn’t do all that good.

    5)Smush.

    6) Face.

  27. danielle says:

    Pretentious women…vindictive women…women over 25….LOL!

  28. kira says:

I’m not sure about the truthiness of this little tidbit but here goes…my friend, a then-LA waiter, told me he saw Leo yelling at one of his flavors of the month. He summed it up as, “If it refuses to behave, it gets the hose again.” That’s pretty much all I can think about when I see his face now.

His comments come off as really fake, too. Don’t buy a word of what he’s selling.

    • kit says:

It sounds terrible but I couldn’t help laughing at your friends comment.
He does sound like a douche, but I prefer his honesty when it comes to relationships to the ones who marry and then screw around. I’m pretty sure these models know what they’re letting themselves in for. These girls must gossip like the rest of us so his rep should be well known.

    • Rhiley says:

I agree that he sounds really fake here. The BS about Titantic especially. Didn’t he pitch a huge fit when he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar and refused to come to awards. One thing that I like about Leo though is that he is very true to his friends: Tobey McGuire, Benjamin Connelly, and I think Sarah Gilbert. He is a good guy in that regard.

    • Kimbob says:

Agreed! At least he was truthful about ONE thing…him being ‘a CLOWN for hire.’ Only that one comment was honest.

Thanks for telling about that interaction w/your LA waiter friend. I tend to believe it. That’s one of the reasons I like to read the blog comments. Some people are directly in the know, and some have friends, or friends of friends in the know. I like reading these kernels, ya know!

Even when I read the headline I knew it was a bunch of hot air. I mean, really…come ON! Leo saying, ‘I don’t like pretentious, opportunistic or vindictive women.’ Give me an effin’ BREAK! That’s all these models are. He doesn’t “date” them anyway…it’s for show. Such bullshit.

  29. Moi says:

I’m betting women with vaginas and breasts turn him off too.

  30. mm says:

So says the pretentious man. Can’t stand him.

  31. HotPockets says:

Leo must be turned off a lot because he only dates pretentious and opportunist women. I guess the guy is pretty must telling us he is limp most of the time.

  32. Seymour Butts says:

He always struck me as someone who had an ego the size of Cincinnati. Yep. He’s about as sexy as cold margarine. He’s only rich is all. Personally I find him ugly as sin.

  33. truetalk says:

The guy is full of himself and he only dates very young supermodels because their career is still very important to them, most are not ready to settle down yet and he won’t feel like he wasted their time because even if you date a 22yr old for 5yrs,she’s still less than 30 when you dump her.

  34. lu says:

I remember in a recent interview rob lowe said if he liked a girl ( mtv video, model ) he would call the company and asked they would set them up, and of course him being really famous it would happen, i believe this keeps going on with certain celebrities. young girls who just start cannot say no to a fake relationship with super famous guys. George, leo.

  35. Cleo says:

yuck, at least River Phoenix isn’t around for the inevitable comparisons to Di Caprio’s detriment – does he NOT remember that he had no chance to modelize before Titanic or that he dated one of the most vile German celebrities – Gisele Bundchen??

    • Minime says:

      lol German? really? 😛
ok, if you will call her “one of the most vile German celebrities” you should know that she is not German but Brazilian…The most vile German celebrity is Heidi Klum brrrr…

      • LAK says:

        Brazilian of german decent.

lots of germans emmigrated to Brazil during/after WW2

      • minime says:

LAK: She belongs already to the 6th generation of Germans in Brazil, she has no contact with Germany and she doesn’t even speak German. Therefore it is incorrect to call her German. Cleo did an understandable mistake taking into account the last name of Giselle. It is indeed very common in Brazil to have last names with obvious different origin because there was heavy immigration way before the 2WW and the creation of small communities favoring mixing of ppl with the same ancestry. I think is very much (politically and socially) uncorrected to categorize someone with a nation that comes from a 6th generation ancestry and I would doubt she feels in any way German. That being said, she can’t be the most “vile celebrity in Germany”, and that was my only point 🙂

  36. skuddles says:

This headline makes me giggle… models aren’t pretentious Leo? I can understand him wanting to avoid vindictive babes though…. at the alarming rate he runs through women he’d be a hairless, ball-less, broke-as-a-joke gigolo if he hooked up with the vindictive ones. 😀

  37. Hmmm says:

Such a victim. Cry me a river.

  38. 2000 says:

This is a recycled interview. The original was posted in 2000 I have seen the scans on a different site. Whether he meant it back then or not today he clearly acts totally differently. But that’s not a surprise. Leo tends to say things when he has something to promote and act differently in private.
He is a nearly 40 self-centered frat boy who is not aging well. He is kind of douchy recently.

  39. Insertrandomname says:

kind of lame if he did make that comment about not having found true love now when hes dating erin heatherton…. if shes in love with him and he says that – its pretty heartbreaking.

and really, these models could be in love with him for real and maybe he just doesnt love ’em back. happens all the time.

    • 2000 says:

Does it really matter when he said it? I mean the part that he hasn`t found love yet? Does it look like he did? Chasing the same interchangeable models one after the other strictly under the age of 25? Even if the quote is old do you think he has found love with Erin? I highly doubt…. Temporary interest at best.

      • Insertrandomname says:

its not about what i think… its about him hurting his girlfriend if he says he hasnt found the one while hes with her. i dont respect men that are mean to their girlfriends.

  40. Daisy says:

Poor little rich boy. The only reason he wanted Blake Lively was because of her name (what is her real name BTW?), and because he couldn’t have her. She used him to make whatshisface jealous. Leo will end up with an older woman is my guess, adopting black babies from Africa.

  41. Meanchick says:

Leo hasn’t had a glass of STFU lately.

  42. littlestar says:

Um did Blake Lively come to anyone else’s mind when he said PRETENTIOUS OPPORTUNISTIC women? Bahahaha. Oh poor Blakey. She sure used him to her full advantage. Good for her :D.

  43. AL says:

a 40 yo manchild with commitment issues is my turn off

  44. mimi says:

This was actually an interesting interview and I didn’t know those things about him and how he feels about things.

He actually sounds a bit frustrated from not finding that person for marriage, but he keeps looking in the wrong places.

I felt for him a bit.

  45. Jordan says:

Would any guy say that they want a pretentious and vindictive woman? If he hasn’t found the ONE, it’s b/c Victoria Secret hasn’t found the one for him. Maybe if he went out with women because of their personality and brain (and were also attractive) instead of a stream of underwear models, he find someone that he could stay with for more than a couple of months.

  46. Karma says:

I have never seen a child actor try and get man-wrinkles as fast as he did.

It’s like Leo drank all the moisture out of his face, and bloated up with booze, then baked in the sun for a couple of years, while going to bed with clay masks, and his best squint to drain the youth out of his face.

There will never be another Clint Eastwood….give it up dude! 😉
