‘The Dark Knight Rises’ new trailer: unbelievably awesome or kind of meh?

Well, finally! A full-length trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was finally released! I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again – I’m actually looking forward to seeing this and I think Anne Hathaway is going to be decent as Catwoman. My main gripe with the franchise – nay, my ONLY gripe with the franchise – is that the destruction and villainy often seems so catastrophic, so realistically devastating that I have no idea how Gotham can continue to exist. Like, The Joker’s shenanigans in the second film should have caused the city to be put under the control of a military junta just get things in order. And it seems like The Dark Knight Rises will go full-on, balls-out CRAZY with the violence and city-burning. Here are some random thoughts on the trailer:

*All of the stuff with the plane and Tom Hardy’s villain looks really f–king cool.

*I hate the way Anne Hathaway says “I’m adaptable.” It’s too cutesy.

*Does anyone else think that Christopher Nolan made Tom Hardy come back and do voiceover work for his character? Because I think that’s what happened.

*I still have no clue what Joseph Gordon Levitt is doing in this movie. Is he playing a good guy?

*OMG, the bridge being blown up!!!! Jesus, that effect is crazy.

*So Tom Hardy kidnaps Batman? Or something.

*Damn, they’re blowing up the New York Stock Exchange.

*So at some point Catwoman is on Batman’s side? Does she break him out after Tom Hardy kidnaps him? So confusing.

*Oooh, was that Christian Bale kissing Marion Cotillard?

*Ooooh, BAT-PLANE!!

Am I the only one who still wasn’t sold by Anne Hathaway? I find her acting and voice really forced. And her last line in trailer is cheesy as hell

    • Bubulle says:

I’m with you on this one, she tries too hard to be sexy and mysterious, I’m not buying it.

      • Mia says:

Agree. She doesn’t have the natural sexiness and sense of danger that Catwoman is supposed to have. She just comes off campy

    • T.C. says:

You are not the only one. She ruins the trailer with her campy unsexy Catwoman act. Miscast.

      • Camille (The original) says:

        +1.

The trailer was very ‘meh’ to me. I’ll probably end up seeing it, but the trailer hasn’t got me excited about it.

  2. iloveretro says:

I’ll see this opening day, but the trailer didn’t grab me like the trailer(s) for The Dark Knight did. I’m not that enthused about Bane as the main bad guy.

  3. Aiobhan says:

This is not even half as interesting as Prometheus but I will still go see it. Anne looks silly and out of place.

Tom Hardy looks badass though. I got nothing else.

  4. Tiffany27 says:

I can’t wait to see this!!!!! Idgaf about Hathaway but I’m excited to see JGL and see Bane do to Batman what he does in the comics!!! Between this and The Avengers in 2 days my nerd flag is flying high

  5. o_O says:

Some of those lines are so bad you’d think they were ripped right out of Transformers.

“My mother warned me about getting into cars with strange men”

    really???

I can’t watch this, no way in hell is Anne going to bring anything new to Catwoman that hasn’t been done before – just more sexed up generic recycled crap.

  6. Sefa says:

This looks AMAYZING. They do ADR for every movie and show where dialogue is a little incomprehensible, so I have no doubt they brought Tom back in for it.

  7. Charlotte says:

    It looks absolutely brilliant!!

  8. maggiegrace says:

The thing that gets me about the Batman franchise is Bate’s mask-indused stuffy nose voice. It sounds so rediculous.

  9. hstl1 says:

It has Tom Hardy in it so I would go see it if it were as bad as my 8th grade school production of The Fiddler on the Roof.

    Love me some Tom Hardy!

  10. Mia says:

This looks incredible, seriously. I’m going to fly my inner nerd flag here and say that Hathaway seems perfect as Selina. The real Selina… not the “Tim Burton” Selina. Michelle gave an amazing performance but it will be great to see something truer to the original.

Bale, JGL, and Oldman remain sexy as hell. Michael Caine is going to make me cry, love him!

    • The Original Mia says:

      Name & comment twins!

I can’t wait to see this. My excitement is a little dampened because I’m all about the Avengers right now, but once I’ve seen that a few times, I’ll be ready to wave my fangirl flag for TDKR!

      • Mia 4S says:

I bow to the original! LOL! I love that there is supposed to be some sort of “rivalry”. They are sooo different. My take is that I have no doubt I will love Avengers ( as I loved the first Iron Man) but Nolan’s Batman films hit much deeper than Marvel is aiming for. That’s great, they are totally different. Avengers will be great fun, I think Dark Knight Rises will be more of an “experience” though.

    • Liv says:

      SO EXCITED!!! 🙂

  11. Jenna says:

Anne looks so out of place. Was she trying to be sexy in that mask there with Bruce? Because if so, she failed.

In other news, OMG JGL!!!! Unf. Love that man. Going to see this just for him. 😀

  12. Rux says:

I CAN’T WAIT!!!! I am such a supernerd and it “balls out” came out when I showed this trailer to my husband and went on and on about who Bane is and JGL character is and my voice got really high-pitched and I got verbal diarrhea – cha cha cha!

Just like in this post, sorry.

    • marie says:

well hot damn, I love me some JGL! I had to bring the guys in from the warehouse to watch it, so I didn’t look like a supernerd watching it again..

  13. M3l says:

Saw it on the big screen before The Avengers last week, I’m excited.

Still a little doubtful about Anne but guess I’ll wait and see.

  14. Orly says:

Gave me a lady-boner and I’m okay with that!

  15. Winky says:

o_O and Jenna are right. Anne was miscast. She is a talented actress but she is not pulling off the sexy/clever ruse required of Catwoman. Kitt! Newmar! Pfieffer!

  16. Kennedy says:

Any doubts about Anne Hathaway as Catwoman/Selina Kyle have been erased. She’s a fine actress when given a good script/working with a good director (just watch Rachel Getting Married). I think she will be fine. Kaiser, she doesn’t sound cutesy at all but I guess it’s all a matter of perception.

Cotillard’s role is definitely being kept under wraps. She must be Talia! God I love that woman <3.

  17. Rachel says:

So excited! I want to see this movie soooo badly. I hope Anne Hathaway will be decent… I’m not expecting a masterpiece, I’m just hoping for passable. She just seems too goofy IRL to pull off the smoldering sensuality of Catwoman.

  18. Ginger says:

Yummy christian bale!! The main reason I will see it but I still like the first one best

  19. Amy says:

    1. Yeah Anne Hathaway’s lines sound cheesy and forced. That’s either the writers’ fault/the way she delivers them.

    2. The new villain looks awesome but I can’t understand anything he says.

I’ll probs still go see this movie.

  20. Riana says:

Ouch, sigh. It didn’t sell me. It’s sad because the 2nd film was brilliant and I was hoping this was one trilogy that would end well instead of killing it’s own brand: Spiderman, X-Men, etc.

    1. Bane’s costume is just ridiculous. It’s not scary or intimidating and the fact it makes it harder to hear him is a waste.
    2. Anne doesn’t give me a good Cat Woman. That character has an essence and spirit that has to really be understood. I think Anne is just playing sexy Bad girl and hoping it works.
    3. Love GJL but yeah…what is he doing in this plot wise?
    4. the lines seem really bad, especially that final scene “It’s not a car” …ugh.

I hope I’m wrong but this just seems like Nolan is trying to get out of the series with a lot of flash than substance.

    • the original bellaluna says:

WTF is up with Bane’s mouthpiece? It looks ridiculous!

  21. Turtle Dove says:

“the destruction and villainy often seems so catastrophic, so realistically devastating that I have no idea how Gotham can continue to exist…”

To compare fantasy to reality – London was resurrected after WWII and being bombed to hell, so Gotham can too. 🙂

  22. J says:

It seems like Anne Hathaway modeled her Catwoman voice after a combination of Joan Holloway and Catherine Tramell. I’m willing to give her a shot, but it might have been better if she just stuck with her normal tone.

  23. Amanda G says:

I guess I’m the only one who finds this whole series ridiculous. His batman voice makes me laugh every time. It’s horrible. Anne Hathaway as Catwoman? Please. She has zero sex appeal.

    • Eve says:

No, you’re not alone. I always laugh at his “Batman voice”. It’s already ridiculous on its own — but the combination with Bale’s natural lisp makes it even more so.

      • Tiffany27 says:

        Eve!!! How was Avengers?

      • Eve says:

Hard for me to talk about it without spoiling it for you, but if I can describe it in one word? PERFECTION!!!

Joss Whedon did an amazing job. Every single one of the positive reviews you’ve seen so far is well deserved, believe me.

Everybody has their moments (like Incredulous said on another thread), the interaction between the characters is brilliant and not forced at all — even Tony Stark, whose “super cool and witty” persona has bugged me sometimes, is hilarious this time. My god, I even loved The Goop! She is (GASP!) lovely in this movie.

Action packed, but never to the point of making people bored (nor overwhelmed). Dialogues are really, really funny.

And Bruce Banner/Hulk? I want to marry him. I always trusted Mark Ruffalo’s work, but he was even better that I thought. He owns the role completely and his is the definitive Banner.

Really, can’t find anything bad to say this movie. You’ll be a child again, you’ll scream, laugh, and clap — but you won’t feel like an idiot because everybody in the theater will be doing the same thing.

When I left the room I felt like going back in line to buy another ticket but damn, they’re expensive on weekends. I tried to watch it again yesterday with a friend of mine but all the screenings were sold out (except the 3D one, at 10 p.m. — too late for me to take the bus home and I already watched it in 3D). He had bought his ticket on Saturday (to watch it on Monday).

P.S.: What a rant but no spoilers, right? Phew!!!

      • Tiffany27 says:

OMFG I’m so excited!!!! Thursday at midnight!!!!! I can’t wait to see Mark Ruffalo, RDJ, and of course your husband 😉
I literally cannot remember the last time I was so excited for a movie like I am now!

      • Eve says:

GAH! I forgot to talk about my husband!

By the way, remember the thread here where we discussed ScarJo’s fighting scenes? She’s awesome. I was OMFG-ing the whole time during her scenes with Banner.

Her Russian could be better, I suppose (the character is a native Russian) but surprisingly enough, I REALLY liked her.

Even Thor, who I found sort of silly in his “origin” movie, was super cool in this one.

Seriously, whoever says anything negative about this movie is either trying to be “different” or is a DC Comics/Batman/Nolan fanatic.

        Ok, I’ll stop now.

P.S.: I’ll try to watch it again tomorrow but Wednesdays in the theater here are a mess (the tickets are cheaper).

      • Tiffany27 says:

I actually enjoyed Thor, Loki more so, but I liked the movie. And ScarJo doesn’t suck in th movie? I’m surprised at that but her fight scenes do look awesome! Is there something after the credits? (Dont tell me what it is if there is!!)

      • Eve says:

No, ScarJo doesn’t suck — in fact, she’s in one of the most interesting scenes (that I cannot talk about for the fear of ruining it for you).

And there was something (an absolutely awesome something if you like/know the comics) after the credits…but like “mid credits” — they showed the main names and then the scene, then the rest of the credits.

I thought that there would be another one after the very ending of the credits but there wasn’t (Downey Jr., that motherf*cker, suggested there would be an extra scene and I believed it). I, however, cannot guarantee that there won’t be another one in the US. Maybe they’ll wait to show the other one when the movie opens in your country.

By the way, if you liked Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in Thor, you’ll like him even more in The Avengers.

      • Tiffany27 says:

        AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Eve says:

        Tiffany, please read this!

I just read on comicbookmoviefan (or something like that) that there is indeed an extra scene (besides the one I already saw) after the credits for North American audiences.

I’d stay in the theater if I were you — just in case.

And now I’m angry because I haven’t seen it and probably won’t see it — unless they send other copies or add the scene to the ones that are already here? Is that possible? I’m furious now.

      • Tiffany27 says:

Thats’ awesome there’s 2 additional scenes!!!! It sucks they only have it for North American theaters though. If they don’t show it when you see it again I’ll def. let you know what it is. I’m a comic book nerd (mostly Marvel) so if it’s comic book related I might pass out!

      • Eve says:

So you’re a comic book nerd? Ha! You’ll freak out when you see the extra scene (the one I saw).

Seriously, every time I think about The Avengers, my mouth waters…I HAVE to see it again.

      • Tiffany27 says:

I have no doubt I will freak out!!! 🙂

*runs off to look for inhaler*

  24. Clara says:

I think Lena Headey would have made a great Selina Kyle. A lot more mature than Hathaway, anyway. Just throwin’ that out there.
Regardless, I’m sh*ttin’ myself with excitement for this.

  25. lucy2 says:

That looks so good! I can’t wait. I loved the first two, and have enjoyed every film that Nolan has made.
I’m not sure of Anne either – I think she’s a very good actress but agree she’s an odd choice for the role, though what I saw in the trailer didn’t bother me like it did some. I’m willing to give her a chance, maybe she’ll be great.
JGL and Marion! Love them both, glad both joined the cast.

  26. Vera says:

I’m just so glad that they’re doing the Talia love interest instead of Selena – it has been the only way to stomach Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. Beyond that, and from the 6-8 minutes that was the beginning of Ghost Protocol in imax, I am intrigued. I’m sure once I see the Avengers this week Batman will be my next main focus. I am looking forward to Spiderman, but this is Nolan’s big finale – it has to be good. And they’ll probably have Spiderman be a series because I’m sure it will be very successful now that it is following the comics a bit more, so I’m not as ecstatic for it as the Avengers or Batman.

  27. Ai says:

Being a Batman fan, I really did loved Nolan’s first two and I’m excited to see this. Although I’m annoyed with two things about his ‘casting’: Nolan can’t pick good actresses for his Batman movies and so I’m not sold on Anne H. either. Good that Marion is in this movie. Did not enjoy catwoman in the trailer saying those cheesy lines! The other urk is while I love JLG and Marion, his recasting them in this so soon after Inception makes it wierd.

  28. HotPockets says:

So let me just add that I think this trailer gave away a major spoiler in the movie..

Bane kills batman (Bale) and Joseph Gordon Levitt becomes the new batman..

    • Otter says:

This has long been proposed to be the ending…but what in the trailer lends this long-running theory any supporting evidence?

      • HotPockets says:

When Hathaway says, “You don’t owe these people anything, anymore.” and he says something like, “not everything, not yet” and it looks like JGL’s jawline, not Bales, but maybe it’s just me. Plus, they just show random shots of his character and don’t really explain him tying in with the story line. It makes it seem like they foreshadow him being the next Batman.

  29. Zoe says:

I will see it because of Tom Hardy. I would watch him in a one-man high school play. Love Hardy!

  30. sup says:

another cheesy trailer. beings silently with several mass destruction scenes exploiting people’s ptsd. long gone are the charming gothic batman movies by tim burton, who could be really scary and yet entertaining as well. there is nothing charming about these series, and the only good thing about the last one was the late heath’s performance of a lifetime. i don’t know if i’m the only one who feels this way, but i’m so over this.
