Benedict Cumberbatch promotes ‘Sherlock’ in NYC: would you hit it?

We got a request for MORE Benedict Cumberbatch coverage, so here you go. These are new photos of Cumby at a NYC screening of the first episode of Sherlock’s second season. Did you watch the first season of Sherlock? It was pretty good. No, make that “damn good.” Cumby gets a lot of good press for his portrayal of a modern Sherlock Holmes, but we should also give Martin Freeman a lot of credit too – his Dr. Watson is a wonderful companion/straight-man/friend to Sherlock. Anyway, the second season of Sherlock begins on PBS this Sunday! Are you excited? I am! It’s already aired in the UK, of course – I think they got to see it last summer or fall.

If you’re not on the Cumberbitch Bandwagon yet, let me just say… I enjoy photos of the Cumberbatch, but he’s much better in motion. He’s an odd-looking man, for sure. But he also has a very rich, educated, posh vibe about him – he’s intellectual and well-spoken, and to borrow a phrase from F. Scott Fitzergerald, his voice sounds like money. And in case you’re not into the Sherlock Holmes thing and your deal is decidedly nerdier, Cumberbatch was cast in the new Star Trek sequel. It was just confirmed this week that he’s playing KHAN!

Here’s Cumby’s appearance on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz. I enjoy the way this woman is fan-girling all over him. Also love Cumby’s reaction to his Cumberbitches!

To answer your question, that’s a big NO

    • heatheradair says:

      D-I-T-T-O.

      Big, capital, bold letters, NO.

There’s something very “Madam Tussauds” waxy about that dude.

    • Jilli says:

Agree. No. He looks like a wimpy Dennis Quaid.

    • only1shmoo says:

Oh, ladies, I get that the pictures may not do him justice, but trust me, if you watch Sherlock you’ll see a whole new guy…and he’s totally bangable!

      • HotPockets says:

He screams, Dennis Qauid’s little botoxed brother to me, yuck!

      • Seagulls says:

I’ve seen it, and while I find his character on the show and his acting admirable, nope. Uh-uh. That is not something I would prefer to be with.

    • gg says:

He is a really good actor. But shallow as it seems, I have a hard time getting past his name. Hell, I want to call my junk my Cumbersnatch. But mostly, I’ve seen him play so many miserable castoff beaus in so many period films, my opinion is tainted. So to speak …

  2. Dana says:

Yes, I would hit it. He is currently #3 on my top five. I can’t wait for “Sherlock” to be back!

    • linda says:

      love him in sherlock.

    • someone says:

season 2 is amazing! i don’t live in the UK but i watched it all online. amazing season!

    • Amelia says:

hehe, I’m British and the series started on New Years Day. Teehee, I have the series 2 DVD right here by my computer *taunts and ducks rotten fruit*
You’re in for a real treat. Seriously, the last episode 0_o
My eyes have never recovered. I need new tear ducts. If you’ve read the books and recognise the episode titles, you’ll know what I mean. Watch EVERY episode in a darkened silent room, it gives it such an atmosphere … ooh, the first episode makes me warm and happy inside ^^
Oh dear. I think I’ve blown my nerd cover. Ho hum. Anyone else want to start the Church of the Grand High Moff and Gatiss?

      • grabbyhands says:

I’m there. Mark Gatiss is one of my gay husbands.

      • Pippa says:

Oh my god yes! I’m British too and THE LAST EPISODE! Seriously, if you’re not in love with him by them I do not understand you! AND NOR DO I WANT TO 😉

No but seriously, watch it, it is ridiculously good! Almost enough to make me forgive Moffat for his recent butchering of Doctor Who.

    • hazeldazel says:

      like a geeky jackhammer, baby!

(and for those who don’t get it, he just doesn’t take good pictures). See Sherlock, or the movie, Tinker Tailor.

  3. LeeLoo says:

Ugh. In that last picture he does that weird serial killer stare. I do agree that he is better in motion. When you get those candids he always looks like he’s a serial killer and is scoping out places to hide the bodies (see last 2 photos).

Now that I’ve seen him act, I think he’s a great guy. I sure can’t wait to see him in the new Star Trek movie.

  4. liza says:

No, I would never hit it. I also do NOT like Sherlock at all. The way they handled Irene Adler’s story made me fume really. And the showrunner (Steven Moffat) is a huge misogynist.

    • DreamyK says:

      Hell. No.

He reminds me of the kinky uptight stereotype British guys that secretly like to dress up like ladies in the privacy of their home and hide in their closets and practice auto-eroticism.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that 🙂

  5. brin says:

I always think his name is Cabbagepatch!

  6. marie says:

other than being English, I don’t really get his appeal..

  7. Mia 4S says:

Love him! Great, great, actor. I’ve seen season two Sherlock and it was extraordinary. I am dying for season 3.

There were Twitter pics of him hanging out at the Marvel offices. Hmmmm… I am not up enough on my comic book knowledge to guess where that might be going.

  8. Jessica says:

He is quite Dennis Quaidish… I dont like Benedicts bottom lip.. something weird about it.

  9. alexis says:

    I’d hit that all night.

  10. Jenna says:

Um…no. Yes, he’s a great actor, but still…no. His beady little eyes scare me! o_O

  11. spinner says:

No thank you. He looks like Dennis Quaid.

  12. gloaming says:

Um no I wouldn’t hit it, but he does have a great set of pins on him.

  13. bros says:

I watched season 2 as well, on disk some genius was able to copy. it was marvelous.

  14. Me says:

    No. He looks creepy.

  15. another nina says:

Yes, absolutely! (and I haven’t even seen sherlock yet!) In fact, I’d hit both him and eddie redmayne, they sort of look like distant rich cousins…

  16. Mauibound says:

Season one was really good! Count me
    in as a cumberbitch!

  17. layla says:

I never got the Cumberbatch frenzy, and yes! I’ve watched Sherlock… and then Pajiba posted a GIF of him taking off a coat/scarf, and g*d damn if my loins didn’t ache just a little.

    http://www.dollymix.tv/assets_c/2012/04/cumberbatch-sexy-155363.html

    WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better in motion!

  18. Monkey Jim says:

FLOVE Sherlock and I have attention span of a goldfish & was glued to screen for both series, but have held an embarrassing candle for Martin Freeman (he’s Watson) for years (yes, I know he’s a freaking Hobbit, in real life & on screen). Hanging head in shame…

  19. Rhiley says:

I love Sherlock and yes, I think I would hit it.

  20. Mrs.Robinson says:

Love, love, love the show, but I do not find this gentleman to be my particular cup of tea. Please show some of Martin Freeman because he is excellent in “Sherlock”. He’s also quite adorable.

  21. ethosdino says:

    YES YES, three times YES!

  22. birdie says:

I would hit it HARD!! He is so hot, intelligent, handsome… Lainey loves him, too AND Tom Hiddleston and him are adorable/hot together!!
Btw, how dumb does the blonde interviewer sound, gosh…and she touches him in that pic. She really shouldn’t do that!

    • MyMichelle says:

Poor guy has had some twitty interviews in his time (see: Alan Carr’s show) but that blonde lady was just…shrill. I felt bad for the guy.

    • grabbyhands says:

Oh my god she was annoying.

  23. Reece says:

He’s playing Khan? *geeks out* Smaug & Khan in one year…Yeah!
I already saw Sherlock S2. I’ll watch it again legally. 😀

  24. MyMichelle says:

Hell yes, I’d hit it like it was going out of style.

  25. jill says:

Odd looking guy. and weird. no thanks!

  26. Nessa says:

Wow. People actually find this guy sexy?

  27. Maria_Spain says:

    NOOOOOO at all.

  28. Finn says:

Absolutely! Smart and witty turns me on–brilliant brilliant actor, and one of his best friends is James McAvoy.

  29. tru tru says:

NO! his face looks weird, like there is something fake or plastic about it.

ewww, never..those beady eyes, he looks alien like.

you guys can have at it!

    no thanks

  30. Cait says:

He seems talented, but not my type.

  31. Princess Lizabeth says:

He’s a bit unusual looking, but a GREAT actor. I love intelligence and refinement; he has both. As for hitting it…well, my heart still belongs to my husband. 🙂

  32. lila says:

I like all the folks saying no. Less competition:) and yes, I would hit it any day of the week, and twice on Sunday. Yum.

  33. spitfire says:

His is the Voice. Soothing, sexy and downright smooth. Just one lovely, fantastic and fabulous voice. And a pretty darn good actor. Not the handsomest but easy on the eye and with character. Me likes.

  34. grabbyhands says:

I’d hit it like the fist of an angry god.

But I’ve arrived at the fan paradox-I love that people are seeing what I’m seeing finally about this guy, but I’m worried about the massive exposure stealing away his humbleness and turning him into another Hollywood douchebag. I hope he never moves to LA or starts to appear in stupid rom coms.

    • Shannon says:

That is the single most awesome sentence anyone has ever said about anything ever!!! ‘angry god’…awesome!!!

    • Allons - y Allonso says:

Lols ‘fist of an angry god’. Love it!
I’d hit it: yesterday, today and tomorrow

    • Rainy Days says:

@grabby hands – My fears for Benedict exactly! However I have hope he is sensible enough not to fall into that trap of appearing in anything and everything just to get his face out there. I really believe he is bigger and better than that. Oh and photo’s don’t do him justice especially with this dyed black hair, he’s practically a ginger, and it works…. love him.
American friends, look for a movie called Third Star or Wreckers to get a sense of how hot this guy is.

  35. mia girl says:

Love him, by would not “hit” him.
Can I just admire him platonically? 🙂

  36. Mika says:

Season 2 of Sherlock is AMAZEBALLS!

I’m not in the U.K, but here is a little tip for everyone in the U.S and Canada who want to watch anything British on time (Misfits, Skins, Downton Abby, Sherlock ANYTHING.) Get cozy with torrenting/steaming stuff off the internet. Some call it pirating, and I know in the States you can get nailed for that, but if you’re in Canada… just go for it.

  37. monette says:

I would hit it like there’s no tomorrow! I fell in love with him as Sherlock, these series are just so darn witty and funny and so entertaining that I can’t wait for season 2. In motion and in character he is the embodiment of intellectual and sexual lust. YUMMMY!

  38. Mi says:

He’s way better in motion no question about it but sometimes he actually looks really good in photos, it depends on the angle and how his hair is styled. But best of all he is an amazing actor especailly on the stage, though he has done other really really good work in movies, tv and radio drama. But if I would do him? I find him aesthetically attractive but I wouldn’t do him (but then I’m a panromatic asexual, so if it weren’t for that I would probably do him).

  39. jesstar says:

    Sure, but I’m a slut. LOL j/k
My gut reply is, it would depend on his personality, so I guess the answer is NO.

  40. Darlene says:

yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

  41. womanfromthenorth says:

    Am I gay?

If I was ya, I guess. But as a woman, not a thing about him stirs anything more than wanting to order something.

  42. V says:

I can’t imagine him as hot, cause my cousin is a clone of him. It’s disturbing.

  43. Lady Lupton says:

I’d hit is all day long and then some more.

  44. Halfmydadsage says:

Adore him. Love him. Photographs do nada for him but Sherlock and playing Hawking… the man is beautiful and talented. Meow.

  45. Andie B says:

Yep, I would. Only in theory though, as I’m married to a lovely man. But Cumby is yumby! The photos don’t do him justice. When he’s in motion doing his Sherlock thing he’s a bit of alright.

  46. jamie says:

Yay! A Benedict post! I miss the ginger hair though. Ladies who don’t understand his appeal need to hear him speak. Sexiest voice ever.

    • Gena says:

      Yes! His voice is amazing.

I’m an American in England, married to a Brit… so I guess there is a certain appeal about him that others might not jump at right away. But he is all perfectly lovely, oh yes!

  47. TheOriginalVictoria says:

I am late but am on this Cumberbitch train. In motion, he is every thing I want in an upper crust stuffy English dude.

I want to have his Cumberbabies!

His thin lips can be ignored just this once.

  48. Sin says:

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
He’s a beautiful human being. Funny, talented and smart. Can’t ask for more.

  49. elle says:

I am so upset that he’s playing Khan Noonien in the next Star Trek. Ricardo Montalban was perfection in the Wrath of Khan. Why did you choose Cumberbatch JJ?! WHY?!?!

  50. Allons - y Allonso says:

Poor guy looks exhausted. Still lovely

  51. crazycatlady says:

Say “Benedict Cumberbatch” 10 times fast.

  52. Meredith says:

Get him *and* Martin Freeman together and I will happily partake of that man sandwich!

  53. Elizabeth Rose says:

I’ve tried but I just don’t get it. He’s kind of creepy looking TBH.

  54. Nan209 says:

He looks so bloody british. ;-P If I were a true Anglophile (rather than just a dabbler) He’d be the face of some hero in a dreadfully fun historical romance novel (“The Dangerous Duke” or something like that).

So Yes! I’d bang him with my boots on.

  55. telesma says:

I LOVE Sherlock. LOVELOVELOVE. I love the modern take on the character, and I think he’s brilliant in the role.

That said, I think he’s pasty and weird looking, so no, I would not hit it. He could read aloud to me, though. 😛

  56. yas says:

To answer your question: “Yes, every which way.”

  57. Lindy says:

Oh my god, YES! Yes, yes, yes. Times ten. He is my kind of hot. You know what I’d really really really love? Sherlock (Cumberbatch) and Dr. Who (Matt Smith) together, with me, all day.

  58. Peanut says:

I’ve definitely hit worse. Lol. It’s a yes for me anyways though. Love him in Sherlock.

  59. pato says:

love him!! he looks tired and bored, and probably annoyed in those pics. there are much better pics of him. his face is weird, but that is what defines his hotness. that and his voice.
and he looks better with dark hair, much much better.

  60. galaxygirl says:

Great show & actor… need more like him.

  61. Amanda_M87 says:

He looks better here than in most pictures I’ve seen of him. I would, but then again, I have a thing fro British guys.

  62. Michelle says:

I was there at the event, he was brilliant as usual. Despite the fact that he had a brutal long day, even towards the end of the night he stayed late for his fans, and still had witty things to say during Q&A’s. He is what actors and actress all should be like, not only doing big screen movies, but stay true to acting by performing live and T.V shows. I LOVE HIM!

  63. DeDe says:

Can I just say that these photos don’t even do him justice?

I was lucky enough to attend the screening in NYC (didn’t win tickets, but managed to be lucky enough to get a standby ticket), and I must say that Benedict is REALLY handsome in person!!!!!

And like one of the comments above (grabbyhands), I would also hit that like the fist of an angry god!!!!!

  64. Sally says:

To all the ladies saying “NOOO DENNIS QUAID EW WEIRD LOOKING”:

Watch him in Sherlock. And no, that doesn’t mean watching 5 mins and turning it off (I’m certain the majority of the people who supposedly “hate” the show have done this). ACTUALLY WATCH A FULL EPISODE DAMNIT.

Watch his brilliant acting. Watch how subtly his emotions change. Sure, he may not be the “classical” definition of handsome, but COME ON.

He’s so much more than that. Intelligent, well spoken, incredibly dedicated to his craft, genuinely funny and kind. To me, THAT is what makes him so attractive.

Quit focusing on his looks and recognize that this man is INSANELY TALENTED.

  65. Tresor eternale says:

All I have to say–with a quiet, yet decidedly intense voice–is this: more…cumberbatch…please.
