Pippa Middleton wears red Issa to a friend’s wedding: inappropriate or fine?

These are some photos of Pippa Middleton attending a friend’s wedding in Scotland over the weekend. Her dress is Issa, in case you couldn’t figure that out just by looking at the clingy Real Housewife-esque silk jersey fabric and the figure-hugging cut. You know Duchess Kate HAS this dress in blue – she wore it to her engagement announcement press conference. Kate can‘t wear Issa anymore because she has to be boring and classy and duchess-y nowadays. But this is the style of the Middleton girls – they love a clingy silk jersey.

As for the color – it’s being called “raspberry” – do you think it’s appropriate wedding-wear? True, it’s not white. I realize that the English think about dressing for weddings in a completely different way than Americans, but my take is that if you’re going to a friend’s wedding, you shouldn’t wear white and you shouldn’t wear red. You should avoid really bold colors and prints. You should make sure that everybody is looking at the bride, not at your visible panty line in a clingy red silk dress. Maybe that’s just me?

You can read more about the wedding here at The Mail. From what I could find out through British tabloid reports, Pippa was sort of dateless. Us Weekly says she went to the wedding with a female companion/friend. And I haven’t heard anything about Pippa and George Percy in a while, basically ever since the gun incident in France. Did Percy dump her? Is Pippa back to being single, back on the hustle for a new titled boyfriend? Ah, the great husband hunt. Of course, there are rumors that Pippa is going to move to New York and stay in America for a while… which is interesting, if true. Will she end up with some Yank hedge-fund manager? How gauche!

PS… why can’t the Middleton girls learn to get out of cars like ladies? Keep your knees together. It’s not that difficult.

I tend to think its “fine” in that shes covered up but its inappropriate for Pippa because of the style. Her sister made that dress a statement, Pippa is re-doing the look but making it look like a trainwreck.

    • Zimmer says:

I agree that the style should be retired from the Middleton-family vault. Also, Pippa should have worn a slip. It is pretty tacky to advertise her panty lines.

    • yikes says:

Pippa has definitely got a face for radio!

  2. brin says:

It’s a bit clingy but I love the color…overall it seems fine for a wedding.

  3. Sca says:

That dress is fine for a wedding. I’ve worn red to weddings before, and seen it plenty during spring weddings. As are prints and colors.

White or cream? NO. And it’s also about style, regardless of color. Dresses that are boobs out mcgee, or cut up to see butt cheeks are what is in appropriate. The colors matters less.

  4. Cherry says:

I don’t see how this would be ‘inappropriate’. She looks fine. The dress isn’t particularly flattering, but the color is festive, and the hat too, so sure.

    • Mairead says:

Exactly. It’s a nice colour and all it needed was a slip to cut down on the clingage which is never flattering.

According yer wan on etiquette hell.com wearing anything other than a limited number of tones and black, at a stretch, will have her and seeming many other Americans. We dont generally give two figs about colours on this side of the Atlantic. Even wearing a pattern with a white base has has her going mental! What I wouldn’t give to have that little to worry about.

    • yow says:

Inappropriate as in you’re not supposed to show up the bride at her own wedding. Usually red is the color for doing just that.

  5. Eleonor says:

I like Pippa’s casual style, really, I like her dresses her boots (I am a boot-girl) because I can easily relate to it. This dress it’s meh, not bad, not stunning,wedding-appropriate, but that thing on her head…I don’t like it. Kudos she’s not wearing granny pantyhouse like her sister!

  6. LadyJane says:

Nice legs! I think she looks lovely. This isn’t trashy. She isn’t a duchess and can dress like a young woman, not and a-sexual nun. She could have worn a paper bag and everyone would be looking at her anyway (not because she is pretty but because she is Pippa Middleton). It REALLY annoys me when people wear white/cream to a wedding though. That is happening more and more and it completely irritates me.

  7. lower-case deb says:

it’s very spring 🙂 i don’t see anything quite wrong with the dress itself, overall it falls fine on her, although a bit (a teensy bit) ill-fitting on the upper arm part. the thing about silks is that it’s very very unforgiving. wrinkles and creases can very soon destroy the whole look the wearer is aiming for.

plus, red+harsh daylight. her sister seems to pull it off better because of the darker color and indoor lighting i guess (plus professional photography?)

also, loathe that i am to go banging on and on about hair… there’s so much going on with the dress and hat, the hair should probably be styled away from the face. (not necessarily in an updo, but in a backsweep of some sort).

but all in all… i guess it’s fine. don’t see anything wrong with it. not a trainwreck per se.

  8. aang says:

    Spanish funeral.

  9. samira677 says:

I usually skip these stories but am I the only one who doesn’t care about the royals? Lately it seems like there’s a new story everytime they are photographed. I don’t get why they are such a thing now, especially Pippa. As for the dress it’s not a bright, distracting shade. It’s more pink than red. She doesn’t stand out at all.

    • MST says:

I am not interested in them either, and I think it’s a shame to be spending so much money on the Queens’s Jubilee when so many Brits are having a hard time. Pippa is just a semi-attractive member of the idle rich, so I don’t understand the big deal about her — she’s not even royal.

  10. cupidtyrox says:

She should invest in more veils

    • DreamyK says:

When I first looked at the thumbnail pic, I thought it was a man in drag. Yikes.

  11. Scarlet Vixen says:

Am I the only one who thinks she looks like a man in drag?! Those upper arms/shoulders + jawline + too much eyeliner = YIKES.

PS I see no problem with red at a wedding, especially fall or winter ones.

    • LeeLoo says:

No. She does have a very mannish face.

    • Agnes says:

bless her heart, but she does look very mannish.

    • someone says:

I was thinking the same thing (man in drag). In the top picture it especially looks like that. Plus, the way she walks makes her look like that as well. It is a combination of her stride and her bow legs.

      • Nancy Blue says:

In her favour – less of the wide open mouthed inane grinning and silly wave.

Both Pippa and Kate both guilty of these.

      • Nancy Blue says:

In her favour – less of the wide open mouthed inane grinning and silly wave.

    • I.want.shoes says:

Correction: 45 year old man in drag

    • Rhiley says:

I think if she softened her makeup and did something with her eyebrows it would soften her look overall. The eyeliner needs to go.

  12. Peanut says:

Looks fine to me. I would never give anyone wearing red to a wedding a second thought. I thought white/cream were the only real no-nos.

As an aside, all I can think of looking at that dress is how terrible it would look if you got even the teensiest bit sweaty under the arms. That silky fabric looks like it would reveal everything!!

    • taxi says:

Whites including cream is no-no in the US. Black, the color of mourning, is a no-no too, seen as indicating disapproval of the match but it’s becoming pretty common.

Maybe wedding guests own nothing nicer than the LBDs?

  13. LeeLoo says:

Meh. I think the dress is appropriate for a late spring wedding. The color is totally appropriate.

Now I know the hat is appropriate in British society but that does not seem wedding appropriate aside from the fact it looks hideous on her.

  14. Mack says:

Maybe it was the lighting, or the colour or something, but this dress looked way better on Kate. The material looks kind of cheap to me, and I’m not a huge fan of the back.

She has some amazing legs, though!

  15. Agnes says:

i think it’s too attention-grabbing for a wedding. it’s not her day, she should keep it lower key.

    • Jackie says:

agreed. she knew she was going to get attention anyway, but this just made sure.

  16. eva says:

I think the dress is fine, especially when next to the red kilts the men seemed to have been wearing.

The first pic, the guy is practically running to open the car door for Pippa, but it looks like he beat him to it.

  17. Kate says:

I wouldn’t care if someone wore that to my wedding. It’s not my favourit dress ever (on her) but it’s fine.

  18. TheOriginalVictoria says:

I don’t even know what to say. I don’t hate the dress because she wore the color red, I hate it because it looks cheap and tacky with the way she’s wearing it, she wore the wrong shade of red, the fact that she copied her
sister who made it look fabulous, lack of proper undergarments, her face looking even more wrong than usual, and the ill fit. Why are people trying to make her happen?

And why do the press encourage her in thinking her ass is something to envy? Do they even know what a juicy butt should look like?

    Anyway.

In African weddings and even African American weddings brides will tell you straight up, don’t come to the wedding looking shabby. Yes it’s their day but they want everyone to look as fabulous as they are. My friend Sherifat said in a FB blast, “We are putting photos on FB so please dress to impress. Get your shine on.” And everyone did and that didn’t take any attention away from her because that was her day and it’s the reason we are there. AND TO GET GLAMMED!

But I have noticed at some of my Anglo friends’ wedding, they will cut a bitch if you dare show up to “steal their thunder.” You will get talked about for months lol. One friend came to our friend’s wedding looking fucking fierce un this vintage Issac Mizrahi number and everyone was talking about how hot she looked and during the reception the bride and bridal party basically shunned her. It was terrible. And she was crushed.

    • Azurea says:

I agree, it’s an ugly dress, and IMO not dressy ENOUGH for a wedding. Pippa, as usual, is dangling her man hands out in front like pork chops, and stomping along like a sailor. That fascinator is ghastly. Girl has no idea and no GRACE!

  19. Boo says:

See that top pic? I’m betting that’s what Kate’s hair looks like without extensions. Note the Middleton “sausage curl” effect (to go with the Middleton Eyeliner and the Middleton Horsiness).

  20. Viv says:

Almost thought she would flamenco and sing Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina. She needs to go away and think her public image over, please.

  21. SUper says:

Please! Robin Gibb from BEEGEES died…can we honor him instead of talking about Pippa’s behind?

    • NYC_girl says:

Seriously! I’m really sad about his death. Very sad. All these great artists are dying too young from f*cking cancer!

  22. Andrea says:

Whyyyy is this girl’s ass news? She has none.

    • Agnes says:

      agreed. total flat ass.

    • MST says:

No offense to anyone, but people of Northern European ancestry tend to have flat behinds. Hers is a little LESS flat than others, so I guess that’s why its a big deal (no pun intended).

      • Alexa says:

Actually Pippa has a nice, small, but rounded behind — not a big behind. Lots of people prefer that to the large “ethnic” behinds of the Kardashian variety. I think it was the sway of her hips as she dipped down wearing the well-cut bridesmaid’s dress which caught the fancy of viewers of the Royal Wedding.

      • TheOriginalVictoria says:

There is nothing nice about her ass IMO. It’s wide and not really that round at all. Everyone has there preference on what they think is a good as but IMO you have to have one to be able even make a judgement about it.

And I guess we’re opposites. Where I live Serena’s ETHNIC ass is everything. Kim does not have an ethnic butt. Her shit is fake and it’s wide like a lot of Caucasian girls. Not shapely at all.

      • Alexa says:

Well personally I do NOT like larger behinds of the African variety. I far prefer the smaller Northern European variety. And since I, like most people, do possess a behind, I am allowed my own judgement. And you are permitted yours.

    • Lalo says:

Average looking girl. Flat ass. Ugly dress. Next!

      • TheOriginalVictoria says:

        @alexa…do you boo.

I just don’t understand why people of color are ethnic. Everyone is ethnic. And I hate when we are specifically called out for it.

      • Alexa says:

And I hate it when the only people whose characteristics are open to slamming are those of Northern European origin. I’ve seen it often on discussions of Pippa’s rear. One can have a nice ass which is not large. In fact some people prefer a smaller pert one.

We are all ethnic of course, but like the word “color” as in “people of color”, that word has been appropriated. I’ve got color -pink and white!

  23. HoustonGrl says:

Call me granny, but this is inappropriate. I’m not English, but I’ve spent a fair amount of time in the UK. My understanding is that you are really expected to wear a light coat/jacket inside a church, particularly for a wedding. And indeed if you look at the others at this wedding, that is how they are dressed. Nevermind about the color and the fit, and the fake-tan.

And yeah, I’m sticking to my theory about George Percy. Pippa’s Paris trip was a classic middleton “win him back by making him jealous” strategy that backfired. Now she’s plotting a move to New York, just like Kate did!

  24. ria says:

Please tell me why Pippa is news? She wears a bridesmaid dress that outlined her butt and now she’s a star.

  25. jferber says:

I believe the showcasing of the ass is tacky, especially with the panty lines showing. Considering all she has to do in life is dress, you’d think she’d do it better. Whatever.

  26. The Original Denise says:

Move to New York to do what? I live in the area and NY is expensive. I doubt that the Middletons will want to bankroll her over here, because she certainly won’t be able to find a job and the women are way better looking and groomed. She should stay right where she is. Thank you.

  27. jferber says:

I suppose we’re just lucky she didn’t go commando.

  28. This is one boring young woman.

    • Kitty says:

I’m not sure if she is a woman. I get tranny vibe from it.

      • original almond says:

Agreed. She looks so impossibly mannish it’s unsettling.

      • Nancy Blue says:

Brother likes to dress in frocks. He’s a
bit under the radar at the moment except for his tacky cakes but rumour has it there are some extremely revealing books coming out this year about the whole family. Brace yourself QE

  29. jenna says:

The dress is fine (though would be better with a slip), but needs a different hat. That hat has too much going on to be paired with a relatively simple and unstructured jersey dress. If the dress had more structure, the hat might work, but as is they look mis-matched.

In general, I really hate Pippa’s taste in headgear. She seems to be a huge fan of pieces that really perch precariously as far forward as possible. Kate definitely beats Pippa in the hat department, perhaps Pippa could take a lesson or two from her on that front.

  30. Mare says:

I can. Because this article has just been published and it already has more than 40 comments.

  31. princesslizabeth says:

Such a hard face. The dress isn’t bad, though.

  32. Aria says:

I don’t want to be mean but her face screams “DRAG QUEEN”. She’s the ugly sister.

  33. Jackson says:

I think it’s 100% fine for a wedding. Color, cut, all fine. The only thing that offends me is that hideous hat. And I have never heard of not wearing a print to a wedding, especially a Summer or Springtime wedding.

  34. fd says:

This dress is adorable and perfectly appropriate. Agree the hat is hideous, especially with such a contemporary dress.

  35. Bess says:

Pippa moving to NYC would be interesting. She seems the type that would like the hyper aggressive lifestyle.

It would actually be cheaper for the Middletons to bankroll her in the US than in the UK given the fact that the pound is worth so much more than the $.

  36. Liv says:

In Swedish tradition if you wear red at a wedding it means that you have slept with the groom. ..but perhaps in the UK it does not have the same symbolic meaning.

    • Mi says:

Really? I’m from Sweden and I haven’t heard that before. I seriously need to start reading up about those kind of traditions.

  37. anne_000 says:

She doesn’t look pretty in these photos. Everything about her looks awkward, especially in the 1st photo. Very unfortunate.

    • Nancy Blue says:

Why is it that both Pippa and Kate’s heads and hair look the same size as their upper bodies? Most unattractive
especially with Azurea’s spot on description of ‘stomping along like a sailor’! LOL

  38. Kloops says:

For a North American wedding it’s fine. For a UK wedding I think it’s just a bit bold but not shockingly so. The biggest problem I have is that she didn’t wear a slip. Because of her well known notoriety I think it would have been prudent to dress down and allow the bride to shine. She knows the cameras would be there to capture her. Dial it back on someone else’s wedding day.

  39. A Fan says:

It’s fine…but that doesn’t mean it looks good. She’s working with what she’s got, but…she’s just not pleasant to look at.

  40. Alexa says:

For what it is worth, I think that she might be wearing pantyhose – there is a nice sheen to her legs which makes me think it possible.

I really don’t think the George Percy thing was ever going to happen. They are old buddies from University and their own friends always say they have a brother/sister relationship. If they ever did have something romantic going on, however, her recent trip to Paris and her snogging French aristocrats at louche parties, followed by gun-waving on the way to the train station would have clearly demonstrated to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland that this young lady was not “future duchess” material!

  41. katie says:

Honestly, unless the bridesmaids were wearing the same color, it’s not inappropriate. It is a little “try hard” since Kate has famously worn the same dress. Also the fascinator is not doing her any favors. But, she is covered up and actually looks quite nice for Pippa.

  42. Onyx XV says:

She looks cute. A touch tarty, but overall, cute. Just fine for a wedding. I personally prefer longer dresses, below the knee, but I realize the trend these days is short. The Brits’ fascination with fascinators is a mystery to me. Most of the time they look ridiculous with those things on their heads!

  43. bagladey says:

    Meh.

  44. the original liv says:

the reason that kate doesn’t wear issa anymore is probably because camilla al fayed (mohammed al fayed’s daughter) recently invested in issa and now has a controlling interest (51%) in the company. Once that became news, everyone was saying that waity wouldn’t be able to wear issa anymore.

    • GoodCapon says:

I don’t get it, why should Camilla Al-Fayed stop Kate from buying/wearing Issa?

      • LAK says:

Issa used to gift Kate and Pippa with free clothing in exchange for publicity which is why the seemed to only wear that label for a while. As a royal, kate is not allowed to do that.

Camilla Fayed’s entire family is persona non grata with the royal family after their father’s wild accusations regarding Diana and Dodi’s deaths.

Ps:- the Fayeds are not royal or even aristocratic. The Al in their name is a royal title affectation added in the 70s to fool people into thinking they are of royal descent. It the same as my adding Duchess/princess to my name and insisting you all call me that.

      • the original liv says:

I’m not saying that Camilla would stop Kate from wearing Issa, but that the firm would not like it since they hate that family.

  45. P.J. says:

People like Pippa because she’s pretty, well-dressed, smiles a lot, and is generally wholesome. She’s accomplished as an athlete and professional party planner, and works hard for various charities to help those less fortunate than herself. Though not an official public figure, she has had to put up with constant harassment from paparazzi and intrusions into her privacy.

    So what’s not to like?

    • HoustonGrl says:

      seriously?

    • GoodCapon says:

Hello CAROLE! It’s so nice of you to drop by 😀

    • Stacy Dresden says:

Agreed. People love to hate. I find her mildly amusing, but it’s not that I love her in any way, shape, or form. She’s nothing special, just a tabloid distraction. It’s ludicrous that so much is made of her ass but that’s the pop culture we know and love.

  46. Kim says:

Totally inappropraite undergarments. With better undergarments this dress could have been a hit but instead its a miss.

  47. The Original Mia says:

It’s attention-grabbing and since that’s what she was going for, I guess it was appropriate.

I had actually forgotten about her until this popped up.

  48. Grace says:

Doesn’t she look a lot like her sister in that shot with her in the car?

Also, Kaiser have you seen this story on Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee luncheon?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2146404/Kate-William-join-worlds-royals-Queens-Diamond-Jubilee-lunch.html

  49. Mara says:

Her sister is prettier than her she is so plain looking and uglly dress and her make up age her alot .

  50. Lucy2 says:

Not inappropriate but a little clingy. Liked the blue better.

  51. deep says:

    She looks just fine.

  52. lisa says:

I don’t think she is that attractive at all. The color is fine, but the dress looks kind of cheap (money wise)

She almost looks like she is going to a funeral.

  53. Mew says:

The dress looks EXTREMELY cheap!! Plus, there’s just an overload of blush on her face! Not a good look but I don’t really expect that much from Pippa so no surprises there.

  54. Mitch Buchanan Rocks says:

Pippa should have worn Marchesa instead.

  55. Jack says:

Don’t like anything this girl wears or does. It’s all “me me me!” without any style. She’s showing up the Middletons as they are! So carry on woman loL!

  56. AnnieK says:

I find the hats to be far more distracting than the dress color. With that said, all my girlfriends dressed slutty in tight red and black mini dresses. Not sure why they thought it was appropriate. Unfortunately, many women in our generation are mistaking slutty for dressy.

  57. Stacy Dresden says:

The 90s looking pendant necklace is the most wack component of this outfit. I wouldn’t have chosen this look at all, though. I’m inclined to give Ol’ P a break BUT then I think of all the fashion resources at her disposal and I’m thoroughly unimpressed. I was hoping she and Northumberland would work out – as a fan of salacious Tudor history that would be a fun match.

  58. GoodCapon says:

Yeah Kaiser, I really don’t buy that she and George were anything more than friends.

Remember after pistolgate, where DM let it slip that she and Percy were ‘just friends’? Either DM really knew the real deal and was just trolling everyone for months or there was nothing really going on, and the Percys decided to distance themselves away from Pippa and the scandal to save their son’s rep.

    • HoustonGrl says:

I don’t know…she was pap’d leaving his apartment multiple times in the middle of the night. Then again, it’s Pippa.

  59. NYC_girl says:

I would be all over the guy in the kilt behind her. Love it (not his socks though). I like the wrap effect on the dress, but the material looks cheap.

  60. jes_sayin says:

It never ceases to amaze me… these Middleton girls are perfectly attractive, and then they choose these AWFUL clothes. Budget, boring, 1985.

  61. GoodCapon says:

Kate’s blue Issa dress was a CLASSIC. Taking into consideration Kate’s ability to make everything look cheap and trashy, that was one of her best pieces. It made her look like a movie star and more. It was a perfect 100.

This ‘raspberry’ dress is a minus 30.

  62. Snowflake says:

I think she looks fine. glad my pic’s not posted on here for people to pick apart!

  63. birdy says:

She is like a Clooney girlfriend – pretty but not stunning and has done nothing of worth of substance in her life and is only “famous” through an association.

  64. Shh says:

I know why Pip really getting bad press of late. Curious? It goes like this (within the Aristocracy): They are ALL filthy rich and you’re not. Not of them give a hoot about the “peasantry” (YOU). They are all in “it” together. What is it? “It” is maintaining wealth /power /status within our blue blood ranks and making sure as few of you have as little chances of getting up there. KittyKate was getting all sorts of bad press. How to solve this problem and turn the tide? Little sister acts the obvious fool for international cameras. Instantly all the peasants turn (negative) attention to Pip, and now she’s the sod, whereas in comparison KittyKat starts to look pretty good doesn’t she. Bait n’ switch. Of course Pip wore the same dress and of course Kate looked better in it. It was set up that way. Americans refer to it as “good cop, bad cop” I believe. Behind closed doors they are all laughing about it – so long as they continue to manipulate the direction of you thoughts. And presently that is what has been done. KittyKate needed a boost and Pip was told – play the role of naughty one for a while so we can properly prop up your sister. Before Euro-gate? Kate was lazy, shallow, vain, etc. in the public view. Now she’s getting all sorts of approval this jubilee year (by contrast – not by merit). Well done team, well done ladies! Puppetry is an art. How do I know? Call me LADY Shh…

    • HoustonGrl says:

While I think there may be some truth to your theory, I detest to whole lot of them, Pippa as much as Kate and their lazy cohorts.

  65. HK9 says:

While no guest ( unless they show up naked) can ever upstage a bride (the only frock that can compete with a big white dress with a train is another big white dress a train-and guests don’t do that) I think she’s a victim of a bad hat & if your head looks like it’s fighting off the plant from “The Little Shop of Horrors” honey, nothing u wear will look good.

  66. skuddles says:

Well considering this is Pippa “the ass” my-sister-is-married- to-royalty Middleton… she probably could have toned down the color a bit – out of respect to the bride.

  67. telesma says:

She couldn’t wear a slip? Geez. It’s all stuck to her and doesn’t drape well at all. That’s what slips are for.

Also, I’m sure her sister’s dresses all get a string of weights sewn into the hems to keep them from flying up in the wind, I wonder if hers do? She seems the type to “accidentally” flash everyone that way.

Whether or not it’s appropriate, I would say depends on the wedding. Who’s getting married, where, and what the guests are like. I would not wear red to a wedding because it’s an attention-getting color and you don’t do that to a bride, and I wouldn’t wear black because it’s a mourning color and a wedding is a celebration. But it’s apparent to me that both of them are becoming more acceptable, especially for evening weddings. I think the style of the dress is fine, but it would have been better in a different color and with a slip under it to keep it from clinging awkwardly. It just looks like she has a bad case of static cling.

  68. Christine says:

I think she looks pretty – I love her hat!

It seems like there’s so many rules for what to wear/what not to wear to weddings… I thought it was just avoid white/don’t match the bridesmaids? What’s wrong with red?

  69. Sachi says:

Why does she always look like she just woke up from a terrible hangover? She never looks fresh-faced and her hair looks stringy and messy 90% of the time. She’s unkempt.

She’s always looking so used up, old, and hard, like she’s been through so much and it shows on her face and skin. “Rode hard and put away wet” if you want to be crude.

The differences between her and the brides of the weddings she’s attended are huge. The brides always look so fresh, beautiful, and happy.

Pippa looks like the 45-year old chain-smoking aunt who’s still hunting for a husband compared to her friends who truly look like ‘English roses’ and who actually look their age.

Kate is neither elegant nor sophisticated, but she can manage to look the part of a royal from time to time.

Pippa, on the other hand, just looks cheap all the time. Except at her sister’s wedding, she never looks well-groomed at all, even when wearing expensive clothes.
