Carrie Underwood in Oscar de la Renta at the Billboard Awards: Barbie fug or pretty?

Carrie Underwood was one of the big names at The Billboard Awards last night, and she brought her husband with her! I always have a hard time finding photos of Carrie with her husband, hockey player Mike Fisher. The last event photos I can find of the two of them together are from the Grammy Awards in 2010, so this is somewhat of a big deal for them to attend together and pose on the red carpet. They’re such a good looking couple.

Carrie Underwood

In terms of her poofy Oscar de la Renta dress, I like it in spite of myself. With all that tulle and frou-frou I would expect to hate it, but my guy reaction is positive. Somehow, this dress is huge, feminine and over the top but manages to pull it off with a little whimsy. I think the tight cleavage-hiding bodice and the modern, controlled messiness of the skirt keep it from being too girly. Carrie’s too-long curls and fake-looking extensions are too much with this look, though. I was thinking that before I saw that our friends at Red Carpet Fashion Awards come to the same conclusion. This giant dress calls for a sleeker ‘do to balance out the cake-topper tulle skirt. In video of her performance, below, her hair looks even more ridiculous in motion. Her frosty makeup is similarly overdone, but I guess she’s on stage and has an excuse for overdoing it.

Carrie wasn’t nominated in any categories last night, which I was surprised to learn. She did perform “Blown Away” during the ceremony. She changed into a red flowing gown for her performance. I like that she’s keeping covered up. Normally I would speculate about that, but she’s made it clear that she and her husband aren’t ready for babies. Here’s her performance:

    i say barbie fug!

    • Rainbows and unicorns sold separately.

    • Maguita says:

Only a Country bumpkin can make an Oscar de la Renta look highschool-bal cheap.

It reminds me a bit of SJP’s cotton candy dress that she wore to the Oscars (I think), except she had the tightly sleek bun updo to showcase the dress.

  2. Marjalane says:

If Mattel hasn’t already made Country music Carrie, Barbie, THIS is the dress she needs to be wearing. It’s a little fluffy, but I love the color.

    • brin says:

I agree, it’s fluffy and frilly but I love it and I love the color.
The only thing I don’t like is his hair….ugh!

    • Emily says:

I was just coming to say that exact same thing! So much of what I like about the dress is the color.

  3. LeeLoo says:

NO! Just say no to this dress. She looks like Drag Queen Ken/Barbie. It is Barbie fug to the max.

  4. Kate says:

they make a cute couple. i met him once at a bar when i lived in Ottawa and he is the nicest guy. i hope they make it last.

  5. Ainsley says:

She’s an over-the-top country girl when it comes to style, but she can really sing! Gotta give her credit for that!

  6. Ming says:

She looks like one of those blondies, who get standardly slaughtered in horror movies and no one feels sorry for them.

  7. TheOriginalKitten says:

I think she looks Barbie fug-really hate that dress and her beauty queen hair.

  8. TheOriginalVictoria says:

I love it. It’s modern Antebellum. Was it appropriate for a nothing award show like the BMAs? Not sure but I like that Carrie knows her personal style and sticks with while staying fresh.

  9. bagladey says:

It’s a beautiful dress but no, because it’s giving me images of Kim Zolciak.

  10. lil ole me says:

So cute! But looks like a junior prom dress huh? Not a fan of girls not curling their bangs (natural hair), but curling the extensions. Doesn’t blend well, but I’m an expert at spotting weave.

Afterthought: Hey it kinda looks like one of those dresses from “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” that the dressmaker spends weeks making, using all that tulle

    • Lantana says:

ITA and I do think she does look very pretty. It’s not like it’s slutty or inappropriate. Let’s give the chick a break.

      • Lantana says:

This is weird, my same comment posted on two posts in a row. I only wrote once and clicked once, so just so y’all know, I’m not crazy LOL

  11. jferber says:

Loved your comment, Ming. Yes, yes and yes.

  12. Hautie says:

Unfortunately, Carrie has always dressed as a pageant girl. Big crazy dresses with the big pageant hair. Lots of frosty makeup.

And she does look like a grown up girl from Toddlers and Tiara’s!

Carrie’s problem is the same as SJP.

They wear dresses that were intended for a 6ft tall, 98lb models.

Lots of material and fussy layers.

Which does not work on a 5’3 female. Even with their 4 inch hooker heels.

Her best thing about this whole look… is her husband.

  13. Aria says:

    Barbie fug no doubt!

  14. Bad Gal Addiction says:

What’s really awful is the purse. Nothing wrong with blinged out accessories but if you go for it make sure it doesn’t look like a toddlers craft project gone wrong…

    • Dani says:

I agree about the purse. Too much bling and too much of everything going on here. I do like the color of the dress however.

I wish Carrie would get rid of the extensions and darken her hair a bit. She is a beautiful woman with loads of talent.

  15. Mitzie Martin says:

I had heard of her but had never heard her sing, what a talent! I think she looks very pretty 🙂

  16. RN says:

Ouch, that dress makes my teeth hurt.

  17. mia girl says:

I really like this dress and would like it even more at a different event and, more importantly, on a different woman.

  18. Emily says:

I LOVE this look. If you’ve seen the cover art for her latest album, Blown Away, & add in the fact that she performed that track, it really fits with the theme.

    A+ from me!

  19. Shelly says:

She is a gorgeous girl, but I always think she wears too much makeup and too much hair. Not saying she ever looks bad, she’s too pretty to ever look bad, but it’s not my taste at all.

  20. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Cotton candy dress, fake hair..eww. Not a cute look. And that stupid song was way too repetitive and the fans blowing the extensions – absurd! IMHO, way to nasally of a voice to be considered a true, natural talent. Fake barbie is right! /rant

  21. Jover says:

Great comment ming and while I have a soft spot for extravagant poufy get-ups, i just think she is sooo pedestrian as a celeb; the great female singers like janis, aretha, tina, etc. just had it; she’s just too vanilla and phony glitzy for me – but i can’t stand country pop and therein lies my bitchiness.

  22. Kat says:

I feel like if they do stay together, and decide to procreate–their children are going to be unfortunately chin-heavy. For a woman, Carrie has quite a prominent chin, and HE is about 95% chin. Genetically, the kid is going to be saddled with a MAJOR chin.

  23. The Original Original says:

Hate her dress, and i often like what she is wearing. I do not think her husband is hot at all. He looks like he has a giant huge Cro Magnon head.

  24. bright star says:

That dress is hideous and I love Oscar de la Renta. Ugh.

  25. Stacy Dresden says:

The dress is cool but I’m not loving the Texas prom curls.

  26. Nikki Girl says:

Don’t really like the dress, but she could have made it look much better with her hair pulled back in a polished bun. The big hair and dress are just too much.

  27. Lucy2 says:

I think I’d love it on someone else but her pageant hair and makeup always cheapens a look.

  28. Jayna says:

I love the color and the dress. Her performance was fantastic.

  29. I Choose Me says:

    A bitchy, albeit pretty, barbie.
