Salon’s sexiest man living: Robert Downey, Jr.

Not to be outdone by a fluffy celebrity magazine’s sexiest man alive and their annual sexy men issue, more cerebral site Salon.com has some hotties for thinking women. Topping the list is Robert Downey, Jr., a former trainwreck bad boy who managed to reboot his career and is now an unapologetic star.

He was once arrested while driving naked in a Porsche, he’s done jail time for drugs and has cycled in and out of rehab — and yet still we love Robert Downey Jr. We find him wildly sexy not just because he is a rogue, but also because he is a romantic hero in the flesh, a bad boy brimming with goodness. Even in his darkest days (remember the time he wandered into a stranger’s house and fell asleep on the bed?) we wanted to see him make it back to us with all of his intelligence and wit and charisma intact…

But Downey himself is never “just a dude playing another dude.” He is an actor “forged in a cauldron of his own genius,” as Jack Black teased at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this year. He’s been dancing around the void for a long time now, pouring his self-destructive intensity onto the screen, his beautifully chiseled features now weathered just the right amount by the passing of hard time. Even Oprah looked like she might melt when she interviewed Downey and his then-fiancée (now wife), producer Susan Levin, a few years back.

This year’s Sexiest Man Living goes to Downey because he breaks our heart, onscreen and off. He wears his age and experience like a badge of honor and looks comfortable in his own gorgeous skin. The buzz is that Hollywood is looking for an excuse to give him an Oscar this year or next. To give him Salon’s highest accolade, we don’t need any excuse.

Other top hotties include Presidential Elect Barack Obama, Michael Cera, Javier Bardem (who Kaiser noted was notoriously missing from People’s online slideshow of sexy), SNL’s Seth Meyers and Kal Penn of Harold and Kumar who works as college professor in his off time. In fact all of Salon’s sexy men have qualities that an intelligent fangirl can admire. An educated do-gooder trumps a chiseled douche any day.

way to go Salon! i much prefer their list to People’s. they have guys with quirkyness, genius talent, intelligence (all things that deeply enhance a guy’s attractiveness).

I would have added steven colbert. all in all though, very impressed with their collection.

so glad not to see mario lopez anywhere.

  2. geronimo says:

So agree, Bros, a very impressive collection. This is what I call a Rich List. 8)

  3. queenie says:

Yeah, does this magazine have a lot of druggies on its subscription list?

  4. breederina says:

    Yes! oooooo! yes! yes! yes!

  5. devilgirl says:

    Love RDjr. 🙂

  6. Baholicious says:

I am so thrilled with the comeback of the amazing talent that is Robert Downey Jr. It almost brings a tear to my eye, really.

  7. daisy424 says:

Agree Baho, I have always been a fan of RDJ, great to see him in such good shape. 😉

  8. Syko says:

Got no problems at all with this selection.

I thought I saw Javier Bardem over on the People list, though, and I thought Kaiser was bemoaning the absence of Gerald “dead to me but still gorgeous” Butler?

  9. Topcat says:

To bad for the women that find him sexy – he is gay.

  10. breederina says:

newsflash @Topcat being gay doesn’t make anyone less sexy. No siree.

  11. Chamalla says:

I do love me some RDJ. I can’t resist a man with demons. Especially a man with demons AND big, brown, puppy eyes. *swoon*

@queenie – Salon is, like CB said, a very cerebral mag. I have no idea how much of the readership uses drugs, but from the letters section they all appear pretty intelligent. It’s my second favorite comment section to this one. Great debates, and I always learn something.

  12. Bros says:

    wait, who is gay?

and the only person I see on that list with a former drug problem is RDJ, so i dont get the druggie readership comment.

  13. lanette says:

robert downing? i don’t think so.

  14. Aspen says:

Talented, heartbreaking, and occasionally inspirational? Absolutely. Sexy? I just don’t see it. More power to those who do! I just don’t see it.

  15. mark says:

I think that is just great for all the brain-damaged, drug-addled men of the world. It gives them hope.

  16. Tess says:

    I’m agreeing with Aspen.

Good news that he’s working again. I think he’s an incredible performer…prob best in a generation.

    But sex appeal…not so much.

Gay: who knows, who cares as long as he doesn’t make it political. He is married and has been for many years, but that doesn’t necessarily rule anything out.

Main thing is, he posseses an absolutely awesome talent.

  17. enchantress says:

RDJr should ditch the mustache – have to say I much prefer him without it, though wouldn’t kick him out of bed either way…. 8)
As for the rest: Yum, yum!!!! Thanks CB!

  18. ms adamantia claus says:

Yep. Bobert is a SEX THIMBLE! I always thought he had a little Tony Curtis thingee going on, especially when he was younger. I’ve written it online before and I’ll write again, I’M SO DAMN GLAD ROBERT DECIDED TO STAY. It makes losing River and Heath all the worse. I think that he was able to find a way to save himself after all and it speaks alot about the man.
Robert’s got stories – some of them they must be some ish.
Good call Salon. On Kal Penn too, smart is sexy.

  19. Kaiser says:

@Syko – Yep – I called out Butler, not Bardem. But thanks for thinking of me, CB!

I hate Salon, btw. Joan Walsh can eat a d-ck.

  20. Rosebudd says:

Robert is NOT gay. Why do people think others, especially celebrities spend so much time and energy devoted to fooling the public about their sexuality. Maybe a Scientologist wld.! I can assure you that Robert must be true to himself and live a honest life in order to remain sober and happy as he is. I wld. love him anyways as I have a brother, brother-in-law and daughter that are gay. He is so charismatic, hot and a great actor. Glad he is acknowledged. Yahoo!…..
