Eva Mendes wears a 1950s-inspired, flowery shift dress: lovely or dated?

Here are some new photos of Eva Mendes flower-shopping in Los Feliz, California yesterday. Eva has been getting pap’d on a regular basis ever since she and Ryan Gosling got together. I’d have to check, but it feels like it averages out to about two or three paparazzi-friendly outings a week, and when in LA, Eva is almost always photographed solo. Do photographers stake out her house and then just follow her around as she runs her errands? Or does she (or someone else) call some photographer and say, “Eva will be at Starbucks at 10 am”? I don’t know. I really don’t.

I do get the feeling that Eva is now dressing for the paparazzi, though. Meaning that she’s trying to put together cute ensembles because she knows she’s going to be photographed. For yesterday’s errand – picking up flowers – Eva chose a flower-printed shift dress. This is maybe one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen Eva wear. I’m not crazy about her penchant for silky Hammer pants and button-covered sweaters, but I do like this. She looks like a 1950s housewife. What does it say about me that I like that look?

As for the flower-purchase… do you think she’s just buying flowers to beautify her nest for herself and for Ryan Gosling? Or is she going to be entertaining? I only buy flowers these days when I’m feeling blue and I want to perk myself up. I’ve been side-eyeing the potted orchids at my local Kroger too – should I buy myself an orchid? I should.

Very cute. I love the high neckline and the summery colours are gorgeous with her skin tone.

I would love to nick it, but I would look like a beach ball in it so best not.

    • lucy says:

Wow, with every pic of her flowery dress, we have an ad of her movie’s dvd !! lol grats to her PR crew ! I remenber having seen the very bad Hitch on TV, and nothing else with her, she’s a bad actress, I got a good laugh when she says “grow up” in the trailer of “the girl in progress”.

  2. RobN says:

I like the dress, but she seems stuffed into it and that kind of ruins the easy, summery look.

    • Diane says:

I agree with you. We know these women have great bodies but why do they ALL have to buy clothes 2 sizes too small? Nothing is more attractive than great tailoring.

      • Really? says:

Right, i get ya, like, it will fit right when Ryan dumps her and she loses 15 pounds and 2 dress sizes. Now, it’s a bit like fresh flowers and tits on ice.

    • corny says:

spanx, not flattering at all, kinda stepford wivesy

  3. Maguita says:

Mad Men’s Desperate Housewife. I want her arms though. Beautifully toned.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Her body is off-the-chain for sure but I can’t help but hate flowery patterns-reminds me of the early 90s. *shivers*

      • Chatcat says:

Want the toned body (note to self…increase workouts) but the dress and those ugly ass sunglass’s are not appealing to me, even though I know it is summer and what not.

      • Call Me Al says:

Heard a rumor that all the hipsters in NYC are dressing like Sally Jesse Raphael. Ugh!

    • Maguita says:

Anyone with swimmers’ broad shoulders should never combine sleeveless and crew-neck cuts. Makes you look like an illegal anabolic steroids pusher.

I agree with the pattern… But why 90s? It looks more like my meemaw’s oven mitts.

  4. lisa says:

    I love her outfit.

but she loves blue sunglasses doesn’t she?

  5. Psyren says:

Dated. She looks like this plastic tablecloth my grandmother used to have when I was little. The sunglasses don’t help either.

  6. Celebitchy says:

Kaiser I bought a little orchid at Kroger and it seems to be lasting. They are cute you should get one!

    • Rachel says:

I am an orchid serial killer. My house is where orchids come to die.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

What is Kroger? Is it like a Shaw’s or Stop & Shop?

    • Nanz says:

My MIL gave me an orchid for my bday. Any idea how to care for it?? I guess I should google it!!

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

My boss bought a bunch of Orchids for our office a few months ago and I screamed at him, telling him how hard they are to take care of. Well, all the orchids are THRIVING. I think it’s the soul-sucking flourescent lights. Seems to agree with the orchids. So that is my advice to you-turn your house into a flourescent-lighted nightmare and your Orchids will thank you 🙂

      • Jaded says:

They thrive on benign neglect. Don’t water too frequently (every couple of weeks) and when you do, shake out the excess water to make sure it’s well drained. Mist it every couple of days, and keep it in indirect sun. Throw some food on it a couple of times a year. Also, when the blooms are done, cut off the stem at the first joint and a few months later another stem will sprout (not to be confused with the air roots). As the stem grows, clip it to the little pole it comes with so it grows straight and doesn’t fall over when the buds start.

    • Liberty says:

I have one too and it lasts and lasts! And I am not great with plants. Get one!

  7. Ainsley says:

    Buy the orchid!

I really love what Eva has been wearing lately. It’s prim and a little old-fashioned but so pretty. I’m tired of seeing celebrities looking trashy and dressed down. It’s apparent she works out–look at the leg muscles!–so why not show it off? There’s something really beautiful about her.

  8. Monie says:

I’m getting sick of the new “cheap-looking colored sunglasses” trend. If I’d known it would be so hot I would have saved all mine from my Happy Meals as a kid.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

LOL! I know. Here’s the thing-if you’re under the age of 25, I’ll give you a free pass for the plastic junk glasses but over 25 it just looks REALLY ridiculous to me. Craziest part is you know those glasses probably cost $350 or more. Shoot…

  9. cam says:

whats with her biting her lip the whole time?

  10. Happymom says:

Love. And I think the shoes bring it up to date so it doesn’t look so whimsical.

  11. Amy says:

If Jennifer Garner wore this dress, you would accuse her of dressing like 1950s housewife. But if Eva Mendes wears it–it’s cute.

  12. kennedy says:

Well she has to do something to stay relevant… her acting/talent/movies are definitely not going to do the trick.

  13. Jackson says:

I love the look…except for the sunglasses. Imagine how classic the look would be with a pair of tortoise shell frames. Love, love sleeveless sheath dresses.

  14. kate says:

she is a quirky dresser. so is ryan. wonder if she changed for him or it was one of things specifically about her that ryan noticed and liked. hmmmm. i know she has used rachel zoe in the past but my guess is she uses her (if at all anymore) only for events. she has a great hairline. envious! i wish i could pull up my hair in a bun and look that put together. when i do it looks like i am lazy and don’t want to do my hair. which a bun is actually, but eva looks great. white girl with a great hairline is busy phillips.

  15. Jackie says:

Must be a slow news day if we’re talking about Eva Mendes running errands while wearing a plastic table cloth from the 70’s.

  16. LittleDeadGirl says:

I don’t love the colors but I like the style. It’s classic cut and cute. I like she isn’t flashing everyone her stuff so that’s nice.

  17. Ailine says:

    Boring outfit. Boring and safe.

  18. The Original Denise says:

I am not a fan of hers, but vintage floral dresses seems to be her signature style and IMO she wears the hell out of it….I like it!

  19. poppy says:

Eva is the Bianca Jagger to Ryan’s Mick.

THat being said i like Bianca a whole lot more.

  20. Hannah says:

Not my style per se. But she makes it work, I definitely see it fitting as her personal style.

  21. Daisy says:

I thought movie stars wore black sunglasses? The blue clashes with what she’s wearing and definitely takes away from the ‘look’.

  22. lucy says:

I don’t like the dress it looks like an apron and makes her broad shoulders and no breast. Her wardrobe really makes her look even older. Agree with Kaiser, it seems that her new job is to get into high heels for the paps.
I don’t know if her boyfriend has the slightest idea of how this relationship with her makes him look. What’s interesting is that she’s shot every day by paps and not him !…LOL
Anyway Ryan is the jerk of the year !

    • amy says:

I agree. He’s become a bit of a joke. And he’s lost fans. It’s embarrassing, Eva’s presence has lowered his stock. He’s in those stupid tabloids now, and his dumb girlfriend is getting papped on the regular for attention. There’s no way he’s oblivious to all this. My guess is he’s locked into playing the hollywood game now. I miss the old Ryan. He wouldn’t have wanted any part of this or any part of her!

    • anna says:

You think he’s a jerk because he’s dating a woman you don’t like?

And she’s always got papped, long before Gosling came along.

  23. Chordy says:

Thank you, Eva Medes for reminding me not to slack on the yoga today.

  24. spinner says:

She needs to stop injecting her top lip. It’s very distracting. I don’t get this woman’s appeal. Blah…

  25. Ramona Q. says:

The top looks a wee small, and the shades of those colors look 70s, but overall not bad. I like the blue sunglasses color pop.

  26. Maritza says:

Lovely dress for her great body!

  27. Ros says:

Love the style and cut. Does anyone know the brand?

  28. Rory says:

Lovely. The shoes, not so much, but the dress is pretty and suits her.

  29. scarlett says:

It’s actually a classic look so I don’t think it can be defined as dated. She should stay with it..better than overly exposed cleavage, etc.

  30. Sabrine says:

I keep hearing florals are back. I love her retro look, very charming.

  31. Finn says:

Nah, not dated–thanks to Mad Men, the ’50s, ’60s look is in. Oh, and back in the day, they were called ‘sheath’ dresses. Really.

  32. bea says:

The dress is no overly flattering, but it’s not hideous.

Her sunglasses are hideous. The color is bad on her and the shape accentuates her man-ish-ness!

  33. It is a lovely dress, but I think the color isn’t the greatest for her. HAd it been in the darker rose color with the peachy-yellow as an accent color instead of the other way around, it would have worked a bit better. I also am not a fan of ditsy florals, and this strays dangerously close to the line. But all is forgiven because it fits her so well.

  34. pinchofsalt says:

Hate to say it, but she looks great in the dress.

  35. fancyamazon says:

You should definitely buy yourself an orchid. Just mist the roots once a day and the flowers will stay for MONTHS. Then if you want to keep the plant, keep misting and water with orchid food once-twice per month, depending on how it is potted. Most of the time they are in a bark chip mixture, so they don’t take a lot of water. I use plant prod for my orchids and schultz for the rest of my plants.

    • jane16 says:

How do you mist the roots? Do you mean mist the bark or moss or whatever they’re planted in? I think I always overwater mine and they die after a few months.

      • Cait says:

Mist the roots, soil, and leaves early in the day, like 3-4 times a week. They don’t need any watering besides that.

      • Cait says:

I always also fertilize mine either once or twice a month. Twice monthly when they’re not in bloom.

  36. bagladey says:

Lovely dress – looks good on her.

  37. jane16 says:

Cute dress, but thats not a shift, thats a sheath. A shift is straight or A lines, a sheath is curved or more body hugging.

  38. sallyreo says:

What is he doing with this old lady,

she is 7 years older, and dresses even
    older!

  39. MB says:

    OMFG THOSE SUNGLASSES!!
Seriously, I cant believe that months and months later we are still seeing her wear those fugly things. Who the hell told her they look good? They are an ugly colour, a bad shape and way too small for her face. What is she, 8?!

AND would it kill her to smile every once in a while? She is quite beautiful but comes across to me as a humorless C U Next Tuesday.
Sorry for the rant but i just cant with this woman….

  40. Peach Dancer says:

The dress is gorge, the woman too try-hard and too much on the tacky side, I think.
    Does she ever dress down?

  41. JJ says:

Ugh! Not her again. Famewh*ring off Ryan’s name. I just wish she would go away! Daily Mail says they might be getting married. If that’s true, I really hope the world is ending on december 12th.

  42. Gene Parmesan says:

    She really loves those glasses

  43. ToastedSkin says:

wow. you really gotta hand it to Eva’s PR team, they are working their butts off. I bet they havent worked this hard in…ever really.
the dress is fugly btw. like many people said, it looks like a tablecloth.

  44. gigi says:

    i like!!

  45. skuddles says:

How does Eva managed to get papped so constantly? Is it her relationship with Gosling? Her looks? Is she pulling a MeAnn? I think she’s attractive but dull as dirt.

  46. jes_sayin says:

Really tired of these staged photo ops.

  47. Missy says:

God what a try hard!! I read in one of her interviews for girl in progress, where she says that if you check the photos of her paped, you will see that she’s not one of those celebs that goes around all done up all the time, um I don’t don’t know about anyone else, but wearing 4 inch platform heels everyday to go to the supermarket and pick up coffee is pretty f**king done up if you ask me. Ive seen much bigger names in Hollywood when they are paped not so dressed up as her, so I don’t think it’s a Hollywood or star thing.
I think Eva’s perception of what normal people do and how they do it, is quite distorted, either way she doesn’t really come across like a real person, just fake.

    • andie says:

Exactly. Much like Ryan Gosling. He puts on a good act, but that dude is extremely fake as well. I used to be a fan, but since this whole Eva thing, and all the attention she’s been getting for doing nothing, it really puts me off. And he seems fine with it. Something is not right about him, or her. The only difference is Ryan is actually talented. And Eva believes she’s more famous and more talented than she actually is.

  48. Katie says:

I love the dress but I hate the shoes. She looks lovely in there photos.
