The gossip buzz surrounding the Katie Holmes-Tom Cruise divorce has cooled over the past few days, although I suspect that we’ll be hearing some new (or possibly recycled and reframed) details from the tabloids later this week. In the meantime, here are some new photos (from last night) of Katie taking Suri to her Chelsea Piers gymnastics class. After the class, their car (driven by Katie’s new security detail) was involved in a slight fender bender, which sounds scary enough; but it least it wasn’t a CO$ conspiracy — just an errant recycling truck. In NYC, that stuff happens on a regular basis, and I’m just surprised that it doesn’t happen more often since people there drive like hell.
At Suri’s gymnastics lessons, however, all was well with Suri throwing herself into the routine, which appeared to include some self-defense moves as well. She also flew through the air with the instructor’s assistance and was generally having a great time. These photos are so cute:
Otherwise, I am awaiting the glorious Tom Cruise photo ops of his “reunion” with Suri after wrapping up filming on Oblivion. I find the whole lead-up process to that moment sort of ridiculous, and it’s not because I think that children shouldn’t see their fathers (because barring dangerous circumstances, they should). Rather, I don’t really know that Suri (at this stage, anyway) has realized what’s going on between her parents. She’s already used to Tom being away for months at a time, so how is the current situation really that much different than usual where Tom is concerned? Suri’s clearly been having the time of her life doing normal things. Tom will have to step up his game in that department, and you know he’ll try to top Katie (probably by getting her a puppy, unlike mean old mommy), but Tom will never be able to top Katie in the normalacy department. Like, Tom is physically incapable of being “normal.”
In other slightly rude news, the Mail recently made a huge deal about how Tom visited the bathroom 3 times in 20 minutes on the Oblivion set. So basically, this news cycle may just run its course sooner rather than later. Still, the tabloids are hopeful that they’ll be able to continue cashing in on the divorce because they’ve made a ton of money so far from the split:
Weekly magazine sales following the news that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes split have gone through the roof, as HuffPost Celebrity previously reported.
People magazine was the biggest winner, increasing sales by more than 27 percent the week the split was announced and now, in week two of the divorce drama, magazine sales have again been huge.
Early numbers show that all three magazines featuring Tom and Katie on the cover the week after the split saw huge newsstands sales surges. People magazine sold 1.4 million copies, Us Weekly sold more than 720,000 copies and In Touch sold 632,000. Last week, four weekly magazines put the Tom and Katie news on the cover — People, Us Weekly, In Touch and Star magazine — and early numbers show that once again sales were very strong.
“This is exactly what we needed,” one editor-in-chief tells me. “This is the biggest celebrity story since Whitney [Houston] died and looks like it’s going to be even bigger as far as how long we can keep putting Katie on the cover and see it sell. I predict at least three of the major six weeklies will do Tom and Katie as the main cover again this week. We have not seen anything like this since Kate and Jon Gosselin split.”
Kate Gosselin still holds the record for most consecutive covers, having appeared on the cover of Us Weekly seven consecutive weeks in a row. However, after just two weeks media insiders think Katie Holmes is on track to beat her.

Isn’t it bizarre how someone as inconsequential as Kate Gosselin actually covered seven consecutive issues of a magazine? Now nobody pays attention to her at all, but at one point, many people cared enough to pay to read her stories week after week. These days, it’s all about Katie and Tom, and millions of readers certainly want to know the sordid details of what went down in their marriage. Yet with a supposed iron-clad settlement deal taking place so early in the divorce process, I have to wonder how the tabloids will keep cranking out so many stories unless they just start making sh-t up. Not that they’re strangers to the process, mind you.

Am I the only one concerned just how a photographer got these photos of the child at freaking gymnastics? Give the kid a rest. Not to mention the privacy of the other “normal” children present at the same class.

No, not at all. I was trying to make the point that if this was my child’s gymnastics class, as a parent I would be highly upset some photog was in there snapping pics. In fact, I’m pretty sure I would have taken issue and had this person removed.
And a gym that has windows open to the street is just ridiculous. No way for the children to concentrate or have privacy during lessons. Not what I would look for in a gym.
There must be be other gymnastics facilities in this huge city where she can take her child and not worry about paps taking pictures from the street.
I go to this gym and the windows don’t face the street they face a dark walkway in front of the Hudson river. Very little traffic. It seems to me that a parent, nanny or worker took these from the plexi inside. Celebrities bring their children there regularly and parents often like to sneak in a pic or two.
If anyone else besides a pap was photographing a young girl through a window, wearing a leotard and doing gymnastics, we’d be calling the police.
Agreed. I too felt kind of bad even looking @ these pics. But I must day they look the most normal I ever seen them. When did both their hair get so long? Like they were locked up & now their free to go out in the sun shine & like flowers they have both grown. Ok that might have sounded a wee bit odd, but you get my drift.

Agreed, at my girls gymnastics and ballet, even parents weren’t allowed to take photographs. And at competitions and recitals we had to sign a form giving permission for our child to be photographed by the professional photographer they hired. If someone had come along and tried to photograph them through a window, the police would have been called immediately.

Agree with you totally, they are intrusive, and unnecessary. If we can’t stop the paps from taking them, let’s agree to go ahead and not post them. Frankly, I don’t agree with pic taking of any children, and ESP now with Suri, given how distraught she appears to be when confronted by grown ass adult strangers whenever she dares to show her face outside, but those exploitative pics don’t need to be posted. Where children are concerned, some things deserve to be left private, and this site could make that call, and I bet CB would get a lot of support from everyone for having done so.
PS, as a parent, I would be livid if someone was taking pics of my child in a leotard, at a private gymnastics class. But then again, my daughters lessons are in a converted warehouse, that has no windows. You would have to be inside to get those pics. Too bad Katie couldn’t find a place like this for Suri.
That area is open, and Chelsea Piers is pretty much a public space. I know I’ve stopped while walking around there to watch people take classes in there. Katie must have known that before taking her…I’m not mad at that, I like seeing Suri being normal.

Christy I agree with you 200% there are Gyms in NYC (I have seen them) the windows face the street. I could see the kids playing. Some kid gyms are on the first floor of the building, I never understood this new concept.
My first thought too – the paps obsession with Suri is getting a little out of control.
Suri is what 6 years old? These photos are creepy and like another poster stated I felt like I shouldn’t be seeing these, just let the child have some privacy from cameras
My 2 cents: I like seeing Suri having normal, childhood experiences. But these pix have a voyeuristic feel to them, and that makes me very uncomfortable.
She’s adorable in her little uniform but I immediately think of the pedophiles who are going to love looking at the pics. If Suri is a regular, maybe Katie can offer to pay for window coverings that will provide some privacy.
I remember taking martial arts lessons in the evening and being stared at by the laundromat guys across the street. It kind of creeped me out and they weren’t even taking pictures.

Once upon a time, in Los Angeles, a woman was talking to her male friend, outside her house. Someone snuck up, catching them unaware, killed him, and very nearly c u t her head completely off. Crime scene photos exist, and paps showed up later and took their own, once the bodies, but not the blood were no longer there. Some tabloids published the pics with the bodies of the victims removed, out of respect for the Goldman and Brown families, but there were many publications that chose not to publish those images.
Those publications chose to do the right thing, it happened once before. It could happen again, if the adults involved with online websites thought it was in a child’s best interest, not to use intrusive, exploitative images obtained through nefarious means.
Please stop praising this woman for every little “normal” move she makes. We all knew what she was getting into 5 years ago, and she sure as hell did too. You are fools if you don’t think this has-been teen TV star didn’t leap at the chance (including having a known Scientologist’s baby) for fame and money. She is not a hero!

Because I think that Katie knew all along what she was signing up for, I’m now Scientologist? ummm no. It’s clear to anyone with an ounce of grey matter that this break-up was a long time coming and that the threat she felt from Scientology on Suri’s well-being far outweighed her love for Tom. No marriage break-up happens overnight and they both had a lot of “getting to know eachother” after such a short and powerful courtship.

Bella, you’re right. I see trash getting picked up at all hours, depending on what type it is. The most annoying is late at night or early AM. Not all trash pick-up is done by NYDS. But, accidents happen frequently. Cars move way too fast here. I’ve been taking driving lessons and it freaks me out how drivers don’t obey stop signs and lights.

I happy that their won’t be a long drawn out custody battle for Suri’s sake. I wish that the fact that they are settling this privately didn’t cause the media to lose interest or for more COS details to come out. If Katie was that worried about Suri, who would have had it made in comparison, imagine how bad life is for the kids being exploited and their dad isn’t the church’s poster boy. Surely the paps are going to slow down. If Jackie Kennedy raised her 2 kids (at least for a few years) and lived in NYC, surely Katie and Suri will gain back some anonymity. This can’t be a bigger story than a young widow who’s president husband was tragically killed leaving 2 father-less children.

On a stupid note. I know this sounds overly simplistic, but in those moments of exiting and entering cars when everyone is screaming Suri’s name and camera lights are flashing – how about a pair of cute little girl sunglasses and an ipod blasting fun little girl music (Wicked?). That’s the first thing I thought of too. She’s been walking on her own two feet in almost all the pictures with Katie. Now as soon as Tom comes along, he swoops her up and carries her. Maybe he’s just too important to deal with the walking pace of a child. It looks controlling and weird.

I think the problem will be that with him and his family, Suri will get not only toys, and everything she wants, most probably she won’t ever hear “no” from them. They have the lifestyle to offer, etc.
Wheas with her mom, even if katie and her family have money, they wont be able to compete. Later, when Suri gets angry she will turn to the other parent, and eventually could prefer to stay with the richer parent. Those things happen. They can appeal to the materialistic side of a child. Kind like with H. berry and Nahla, but with the cult aspect to it.
I hope Katie & her father realize that they are going to have to be very vigilant for the next decade or more to make sure Tom, his family or Suri’s half siblings don’t start the brainwashing.
If they don’t, Katie could easily find herself in the same situation as Nicole Kidman.
This is one reason why I think Katie enrolled Suri in a private Catholic school. As a product of the Catholic school system myself, I was so happy to see that Suri will have a good education in that system. AND I think the best offense is a good defense, raising Suri in the Catholic school system will hopefully protect her and keep her safe from that horrid CO$ cult when she is older and crazy Tom tries to indoctrinate her. Hopefully she will just say NO and see them for what they are….Loonies!

His mother, Karen de la Carriere has posted a statement in the comments section that you should see. I won’t reveal what she says – I just cannot believe what she has revealed.
I’m not surprised at all. That is the way Scientology “works”, that is how they treat all Sea Org children, of both sexes, in every particular.
There are a few things to remember about Scientology:
1) They believe children are little adults.
2) They believe if anything bad happens to you, it’s because you “pulled it in.”
3) They believe if you complain about anything another Scientologist does to you, YOU are the problem, not the Scientologist who abused you. No matter your age, sex, or condition.
All these points are not the typical abuses of a hierarchical organization, things that simply need to be “reformed” away. They are integral and necessary to the philosophy of Scientology.
What a horrible, heartbreaking post from Karen de la Carriere over at the VV. I can’t believe there isn’t more media outrage over situations like that.
Good on Katie for getting her daughter out while she still could give her an normal childhood and happy summer of museums, petting zoos, and ice cream. Though, I really do find these through the glass gym photos crossing the line.

I don’t understand why Katie kiboshed the puppy. She has people to walk it and deal with it when she can’t/doesn’t feel like it. So the work involved with a puppy doesn’t seem like a very good reason to say no.
I’m not bashing her, I just don’t get it. Of course you have to stand your ground with kids, but, you know, “pick your battles” and all that. A puppy seems like kind of a no-brainer to me as there will be plenty of opportunites for teaching the child about the animal and how to take care of it. And how therapeutic pets are, all that.
Especially right now with the split (yes it affects Suri, she’ll know something’s up – she’s a kid, she’s not stupid 😉 ) but ESPECIALLY when you have help with it. It seems like a pretty sweet deal all around.
