Jeremy Renner accidentally took Viagra instead of Ambien, lives to tell the tale

Jeremy Renner

Jeremy Renner is doing the publicity rounds for The Bourne Legacy, so he stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” last night to shill the goods. In doing so, he told an anecdote about how he recently had to deal with an uncomfortable situation on an airplane, and the story reminded me a lot of how Alan Cumming once gave a travel tip (“I always think the pressure on planes gives you a hard-on“) and advocated the practice of always putting one’s tray down before taking a nap during flight. Well in Renner’s case, he wasn’t sleeping on his flight, but other things were definitely taking off because — get this — he had accidentally taken a Viagra pill while thinking it was an Ambien. Poor guy:

Rise and shine, Jeremy Renner!

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! July 24, The Bourne Legacy actor, 41, regaled the audience with an unforgettable tale about his recent travel troubles.

“A lot of times when I’m on the plane, I have to sleep. And I’m not a good sleeper on the plane,” the single star admitted. “I had to fly from London to Los Angeles for dinner, and then get right back on a plane to London. That’s 10 to 12 hours. I had to get off the plane go to work, so I had to sleep on the plane.”

To help him rest, “somebody gave me some pills, like Ambien. So I took a little sleeping pill, popped it and realized nothing’s happening — but something else was happening!” Renner recalled. “I realized very quickly that the ‘A’ was actually a little ‘V’ on the pill. Not only did I not sleep the entire flight, but there was. . . ‘camping’ . . . happening!”

“Somebody gave you a Viagra instead of Ambien?” host Jimmy Kimmel, 44, asked in disbelief. “First of all, you need a new doctor or new friends.”

Renner admitted that he “was really embarrassed” by the incident, but luckily, most of the other passengers “were sleeping.”

“The flight attendants were sort of in on the joke,” Renner added. “They were like, ‘Can we get you anything, Mr. Renner?’ ‘Yeah, funny,'” he told them. “‘Ice! Ice!'”

[From Us Weekly]

Here’s a video clip of Renner’s Kimmel appearance — the make-up artist for the show got a little overzealous with the purple eyeshadow. So much for the manliness factor of not recognizing Viagra, right?

CB, Kaiser, and I were talking about this, and the general conclusion is that Renner must have never laid eyes upon Viagra before this incident because (upon a quick Googling) it’s fairly evident that Viagra are blue and diamond shaped and look very distinctive. So the obvious implication here is that Renner is naturally manly and doesn’t need your silly stamina pill, now go see his movie! Also, he appears very comfortable telling this story to Kimmel and probably had planned ahead of time to tell the tale, but he seems to indicate that he regularly takes Ambien to sleep on flights too, right? If so, wouldn’t he have realized that he was taking the wrong pill? Maybe I’m reading too much into this. It’s just a funny story, and I like thinking of Renner with an uncontrollable … never mind.

If he’s actually ambien, that’s taking someone else’s prescription medication. Same goes for the viagara.

  2. Sunnyjyl says:

Cute story. I wish my husband would get the two confused. πŸ˜‰

  3. RobN says:

I hate it when celebrities make up some stupid story that they tell on every single talk show. They’re never true and just designed to make you look cool, or hip, or hot or whatever. Dull.

  4. marie says:

I dunno how you can confuse the two, but alright we’ll go with that story..

  5. someone says:

i’m sorry unrelated, but jimmy kimmel is 44?!!? holy shoot. i would’ve guessed he was at most 34-35…he ages pretty well it seems!

  6. Rux says:

I wish I would have been one of those flight attendants….the things I would to this man! Holy mother of ….

I am going to take a shower now.

    Mmm, hmm…now that’s a ‘Hurt Locker’. badumpbump. πŸ˜‰

  9. Tiffany27 says:

I took Ambien a few times for my insomnia. I had the craziest, most frightening nightmares of my life. Never taking that stuff again!

    • amurph says:

Ambien-induced dreams are the weirdest things ever. I was told before I took it that it can cause random bouts of amnesia, which immediately made me go…wha? Apparently, beyond the weird dreams, it can cause you to sleep walk and hold conversations without ever realizing you got up. Awesome. I jumped from being an insomniac to a sleep-walker.

  10. Chatcat says:

Jeez this headline could have read “Jeremy Renner accidently took vagina instead of a peen, and lived to tell about it”.

  11. Mia 4S says:

Is it wrong that I would have happily helped him with his, umm, issue? It is? Too bad, I still would have. πŸ˜‰

  12. Reece says:

He should have said to the flight attendant “Yes I need a nice quiet corner of the plane and you…”
    Or is he married too?

  13. TheOriginalKitten says:

He always has the CRAZIEST stories and for some reason, I believe them. If it was anyone else I would think it’s BS. I have a friend like that-he’s the funniest, most entertaining guy.

    Renner’s so cute-love him.

  14. ZigZagZoey says:

“Someone” gave him a pill and he popped it without even looking?
    Bullsh!t.

    I can’t stand this guy.

  15. Pigeon says:

He had to fly to another continent…for a dinner. What? What kind of dinner was this? He seems okay, he’s just not a gigantic celebrity; it seems oddly extravagant.

    • another nina says:

Possibly a business meeting with directors/producers or may be a charity gala, or a meeting with a client for his real estate business, something like that… I’ve done it too, and I’m not a celebrity by all means, it’s just a regular business practice. He spends a significant amount of time filming overseas, hence he might have to attend previous arrangements.

    • Ruffian9 says:

I don’t think it’s all that unusual, Pigeon. Also, he is pretty big deal as a celebrity/actor.

  16. SalmaNella says:

Don’t believe it. If it is true, he is stupid for taking an “unknown” drug. What a bonehead. LOL.

  17. another nina says:

I like him, and he is a good actor, and his bf is cute, and I love that he has a successful business outside of acting, but I have to say that the story is bs. Try harder, Jeremy.

  18. BamBam says:

Over the counter sleep aids often come in blue pills too.

  19. Erica says:

I looked it up and there is a blue Ambien as well as whit, yellow, and pink. But the viagra pill does seem to always say physer on it not a V. Though if you ask for an Ambien and then someone gives you a pill.. I don’t think most people really look at the pills they take. I think it’s believable.. funny as shit too. LOL

    • Izzy says:

^^This. I once bought a packet of over-the-counter sleep aid pills, and they were blue and oval-ish.

    • I Choose Me says:

I believe him too but I don’t blame those who don’t. Most celebrities are full of bs and we ladies here a cynical bunch. πŸ™‚

  20. Kiki says:

I believe him. If you’ve seen any of his other interviews, on Letterman too, you’ll see that he’s got the craziest stories. I adore him, gay or not. He seems cute and genuine.

  21. Melissa says:

I wish Jimmy would’ve asked him how he felt about a certain blind item that got Ted fired from E!.

  22. Kushkins SA says:

…I wish I had been around when he popped those pills! I’ve been watching the Bourne Legacy trailer over and over again.

  23. Izzy says:

LOL – just watched the video. And slightly off-topic, but is it me, or did Kimmel take a shot at Matt Damon? When he was introducing Jeremy Renner, he said something like “and now he is vastly improving the Bourne franchise…” ZING.

    • Lyssie89 says:

Jimmy Kimmel has a long standing “feud” with Matt Damon. It’s pretty hilarious.

  24. Holden says:

Ok,my best friend’s wife is a Viagra rep, so I’ve, um tested, the product. And this was backed up by the Tosh.0 experiment when they took Viagra and watched gay p*rn to see if the flag flew (it didn’t). You have to be excited by some kind of stimulus for it to kick in, it doesn’t just all of a sudden happen. I’m calling shenanigans.

  25. Jayna says:

The real story is he has Viagra and Ambien and reached in to get his Ambien and popped the wrong pill. Why would a friend give himAmbien if he regularly takes it for all the traveling he does? He would have his own prescription.

  26. storyteller says:

It’s just a funny story. True or not who cares? Renner always has the craziest stories anyway. I hope The Bourne Legacy is as good as it looks, can’t wait to see it.

  27. The Original Mia says:

Bedhead, I don’t think he takes Ambien on the regular. He said he doesn’t usually sleep on planes, but he was exhausted and wanted to crash. He took the pill & viola tent! I believe him. He seems to always have the craziest stuff happening to him.

I would have helped him with his “problem” for the entirety of that 10 hour flight. Just sayin’. Call me, Jeremy!

  28. alonsyalonso1 says:

Seriously this guy needs to write a book about all of his crazy stories. They’re all interesting and weird as hell! πŸ˜€

  29. garvels says:

Why is this guy getting all the roles. I do not understand his appeal.

  30. Cookie says:

Oh my god I love this story haha. Jeremy is awesome.

  31. Holly says:

Who takes non-generic Ambien?? oh, I guess over-paid celebs and their friends, cause ZOLPIDEM, the generic version does not have an “A” on it. Can’t remember if Ambien does, cause I’m too poor, oh sorry, SMART to not pay for name-brand drugs.
