Jerry Hall brands plastic surgery devotees as “monsters”: fair or too harsh?

Jerry Hall

I’ve never really thought of Jerry Hall as a “natural” woman since she often sports gaudy makeup and extravagantly tacky clothing, plus she was married to Mick Jagger for quite a stint there, which seems to add to the generally sleazy vibe that I’ve always caught from her. In these photos, however, Jerry is very clearly a 56-year-old woman and (underneath the questionable makeup) seems to be a quite beautiful one at that.

Anyway, Jerry claims to have never had plastic surgery (although she never says a word about injectables such as botox), and I believe her. She also goes on to describe those who have had work done as being “like monsters.” She sort of has a point even if she has a fairly abrasive way of speaking on the subject:

Jerry Hall

Former supermodel Jerry Hall has criticised women who have plastic surgery, branding them “monsters.” The 6ft Texan, who was married to Mick Jagger for nine years, spoke out on an American TV documentary last night.

Ms Hall, 56, said: “I think it is bad that we have as role models people who are scary to small children. I’m definitely not going to have plastic surgery. I think it’s a sickness. I see people who have had work done and I don’t even recognise them. They’re like monsters, scary!”

The 90-minute programme, which will be screened in the UK this autumn, features veteran supermodels such as Hall, Christie Brinkley and Christy Turlington talking about the dangers of drugs, eating disorders and the pressures to stay young-looking in an industry obsessed by youth.

Ms Hall denounced women who go under the knife, saying: “They are cutting up their faces. They are doing all these strange things. They take fat from their bottoms and put it in their lips so that when you kiss them you are kissing their bottom — that is so disgusting. If a man asks you to have plastic surgery, he doesn’t want you, he wants a trophy.”

[From Daily Mail]

At first, I found that Jerry’s word selection to describe her reaction to plastic surgery to be a bit overdone and slightly cruel, but she does have a point. When certain celebrities — Marie Osmond, Cindy Crawford, Megan Fox, and Kim Kardashian among them — begin to look completely different than their former selves, things have obviously gone way too far. Then there are really sad cases — including Lara Flynn Boyle and Lindsay Lohan (the latter of whom has added years of drugs and alcohol to the mix) — who are even worse off.

All of the above examples speak to a deluded sense of physical self, for most of these ladies looked so much better before they went under the knife, and they just don’t realize it. Maybe that’s what Jerry is referring to by her use of the word “monster.”

I’m a live and let live kind of person, but I get what she’s saying. These people don’t look younger they just look like they’ve had work done. And you can certainly get there with too much Botox and filler! (*cough* Madonna)

Everytime I see one of these ladies (or men) I find myself staring, wondering if they can feel their faces. As creepy as it looks in photos, in person it’s like you’re having lunch with Madam from the Muppets!

  2. tracking says:

    If the eye lift fits…

  3. Justine says:

I am with her, but let’s be honest: It is very easy to say that as an former SUPER-MODEL.

    • Hubbahun says:

Agreed – although she makes good points, it is kind of a ‘Let them eat cakes’ scenario. 😀

    • princesslizabeth says:

      +1

    • LittleDeadGirl says:

That was EXACTLY my thought too. I agree with her in the sense I think it can become a sickness and it becomes sad and I’m no supermodel but I still won’t get surgery, however, people have a right to fix whatever “flaws” they think they have an not be called monsters.

I guess having grown up a supermodel it’s hard for her to have empathy for others.

    • Raven says:

I agree with her and wish more people felt that way. Even younger people, esp. celebs, make themselves all look like they came from the same mold. People need to keep their unique look and celebs could lead the way by refusing to go down that path.

I might make an exception for people over 70. Jane Fonda looks great after her face lift and Catherine Deneuve preserved her looks as well.

    • janie says:

But…all these women who have gone under the knife were beautiful before surgery as well. It’s not like she has an unfair advantage compared to them.

    • Ann Emmess says:

Actually, if anything it is much harder to say this as a former super model. The role models she’s talking about are also former super models and movie stars. They were ALL the one-percenters of beauty, just like Jerry Hall. Those people are apparently LESS equipped to make rational decisions about appearance and aging.

You don’t see Madeleine Albright or Elena Kagan turn 40 and decide it’s time to completely resculpt the goods. If you started out ordinary and built your identity on other qualities, isn’t it easier to just shrug and get on with things as you get older?

Was Andie McDowell considered so much more beautiful than Nicole Kidman back in the day? Did Susan Sarandon or Helen Mirren have some kind of massive beauty advantage over Marlo Thomas or Melanie Griffith? I wouldn’t say so, but an emotional one, maybe. More perspective, at least.

There could be so many world-class beautiful grandmas in the world, but we’re going to forget what they look like because almost everyone who looks like Joan Collins at 25 has decided that life would be better if they freeze that face into a permanent Halloween mask. In all honesty, I’m a little surprised to see Jeri Hall like this. Apparently it’s been years since I’ve seen an unadjusted 56-y-o beauty.

    • Kate says:

Actually I think it’s probably harder. Her body is that of a woman pushing 60, and that’s in staggering contrast to Demi Moore. She’s got far further to fall than the rest of us, and she’s aging relatively naturally. In the world she lives in I think that takes inner resources.

      • Really? says:

“Her body is that of a woman pushing 60?” Have you taken a look around at the general public? When i think of “pushing 60,” i think of preliminary jowls and full fledged bat wings…hell, when i look at her, the only kind of pushing i see are push ups! Perception is a funny thing. I hope when i’m “pushing 60,” that this will be my version.

      • Pandy says:

Not a chance she’s au naturel. We women over 50 end up getting that squarer looking body because hormones store fat in our upper abdomens – a new spot for most of us. Not good ole Jer tho – unless we’re buying that she’s natural AND still having periods? Maybe she doesn’t count lipo as surgery either.

      • Kate says:

My mother’s ten years older than she is and in better shape. Seriously. And she never even wears makeup. A couple of her friends are, too. The looseness of her arm skin and the extra softness around the hips in that photo are what I’m referring to. Slim women with good genes who eat well and take exercise look that way. The ones I know do, anyway.

Should probably add that my mother was a photographic model (too short for anything else) in the 60s, so she has extraordinary bone structure. Women like that age beautifully without work. But looking at the way the fabric is ruching around a skin fold just above Jerry Hall’s waist, that’s normal ageing plus excellent dressmaker-work and Spanx.

  4. Jackie O says:

she has horrible style, but i respect that she has not gone down that road.

the best part are her teeth. they are normal looking! i really dislike the blinding white veneers of most celebrities.

  5. Kimbob says:

Just me, but I don’t find her words offensive at all. They are her words, words she chooses to use, and they ring true to me.

And yes, some people DO look like monsters by the time they’ve finished their plastic surgery transformation. Michael Jackson anyone? What about that Jocelyn woman (the New York socialite…I may not have her name right)…but yes….a cat monster.

If the description fits, then her choice of words are very apropo. I know the past few years everyone seems to try to be so politically correct.

She (Jerry Hall) didn’t “name name’s,” and therefore, to me, she was just being honest, not mean-spirited.

If someone uses their words to be just plain mean…that’s one thing….and not good….but I find honesty refreshing…and Jerry was just being honest, therefore true to herself.

    • Jen34 says:

I agree. She didn’t name anyone. She’s always struck me as an earthy type who never put up with crap from anyone but Jagger.

    • Krock says:

It just cracks me up when “celebrities” or whatever you wanna call them, make remarks like this about others. ie: Justin Beiber saying prince William should use propecia. And now we have this woman calling people monsters.
If I’ve learned nothing else on my years here on earth, its watch your words and don’t talk yourself up a tree. It always comes back. She’ll end up doing some plastic surgery and have to eat her words.
And oh yeah, I can’t wait till Beibers hair starts falling out.

  6. putchka says:

Ehh, she was always long in the tooth and gummy.. otherwise she looks good.

  7. Jennifer says:

So easy for people like Hall and turlington – who have won the genetic lotto and have never needed plastic surgery to say things like that.

I wonder what Brinkley said, she had a face lift recently, yeah?

I think plastic surgery is awesome when done right…

    • tmbg says:

Me too. Everyone labels it as horrible, but that’s because the bad work is so obvious. Work done by a talented surgeon is subtle and many times people can’t figure out what looks different on the person. Sometimes they just think the individual went on vacation or is just “refreshed”. That’s what an excellent surgeon can accomplish. The fish lips and frozen foreheads give it all a bad name. Botox can be done so that you’re still left with expression, but many in Hollywood can’t seem to find the right practitioner.

And Jerry certainly looks wrinkle-free. I’d bet dollars to donuts that she’s had filler.

  8. Holl says:

If its done right and minor I have no problem with plastic surgery to fix something. But I feel like you have to have something wrong with you emotionally to put plastic bags of salt water in your chest to feel better about yourself especially because they need replacing/updates every decade or so. Look at the classic beauties of old hollywood who were natural and gorgeous.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

I have a friend, who got her breasts made, but she wasn´t even an A Cup, she was flat as a board, and went to B. But now that she´s got that fixed, she´s complaining how fat her calves are, and how much better XY´s legs look compared to her. She also obsessivly trying to put together the perfect outfit before we go out, and wants confirmation about which earrings go better with that dress etc.
I mean, it´s one thing trying to improve your body and face, but where does it stop? I think, it´s not that unprobable, that an insecure person, thinks the only way to be happy with his/herself is by perfectionizing your physical appearance, when really he/she should work on her self esteem issues, and develops some kind of addiction.

      • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

That is sad when the person can never be satisfied with themselves from within – like an addict trying to fill themselves up with surgery, crack (like lohan) etc Also it can be draining to be friends with someone who needs constant reassurance because, when you are empathetic and good at providing this constant reassurance you become like their drug as well. And they are so consumed with filling the emptiness the relationship is never reciprocal.

      • janie says:

Totally. Take someone like Megan Fox who was rated one of the hottest women in the world before most of her surgery, and she still wasn’t satisfied. Women would love to look like her, many men think she’s physical perfection, but she continued to find flaws in herself and tweak them until she no longer looked human.

I know I’m considered pretty, but every time I look in the mirror I find something else wrong with my face or body. Sometimes I hate my nose, but I know if I got it fixed I would find something else to fixate on: ears, lips, cheekbones, and so on. It’s a slippery slope and too many celebrities with excessive amounts of money have fallen down it. It’s hard not to when everyone around you is constantly tweaking.

  9. cupidityrox! says:

I don’t believe she hasn’t had plastic surgery.

  10. mk yarwood says:

She looks like my mom in terms of her wrinkles, and mums is 58, never had plastic surgery. Some people DO have genes, and with a celebrity’s access to skincare, plastic surgery just really isn’t necessary. Even Mary Louse Parker looks her age, though she’s an elfin sprite for all time. As for monsters, well, the Lohan and the Kardashian could open a restaurant called The Rancor Pit. I’d go.

  11. Lexi says:

She has def had the jawline tightening/lift thingie ~ I don’t think a single man or woman in HW over 40 has NOT had it done. Her comments seem to imply that constant surgeries are what make people look monstrous ~ not the occasional subtle well done work that they have all had IMO. Look at the jawlines of people from real life and then look at any HW actor/producer/director ~ not natural. Hell, I’d do that if I had to earn a living in that shark tank!

  12. Fritzi Schnitzer says:

She never said they WERE monsters, she said they LOOK LIKE monsters. Big difference. Personally I think many do, male and female(I’m looking at you Bruce Jenner & Janice Dickinson) Jerry is gorgeous, pretty low-key and was hugely successful. She earned the right to say that based on her longevity in a very harsh industry.

  13. Cazzee says:

I’ll have what she’s having. God, she looks fantastic.

Agreed with the writer – Jerry Hall never seemed all that…well…refined to me, and I was never really into her look, but I have to give credit where credit is due: she looks better at 56 than she did at 46.

    Impressive!

  14. only1shmoo says:

I’m with you ladies. When I read the headline, the first thought that came to mind was ‘*cough* Megan Fox *cough*’. I don’t dare call these mannequins beautiful because everything that makes them physically attractive is artificial.

  15. Micki says:

I think it’s a personal decision and should be left to the man/woman in question alone.
I hate when Cindy Crawford promotes cosmetics and so on to generate an youthful look and then comes out she botoxed for years!
There are people that fix a thing and leave it at that. And there are the ones who simply can’t stop.
Still – whatever rocks their boat as long as it’s not my money.

  16. RHONYC says:

Jerry has extraordinary genes, so she can’t really ‘identify’ with those who want to look better. plus, she did get a nosejobe a million yrs ago, but she must’ve forgot. i liked her ‘OLD’ nose. tee-hee. 8) http://dietcokeandsympathy.blogspot.com/2011/05/early-days-of-jerry-hall.html

i love that she is DEFIANTLY southern. she didn’t get a case of ‘the Madonnas’ and get a Brit accent albeit living in the UK with Mick for years. she’s a bada*s, especially for this shot: http://www.babble.com/celebrity/celebrity-moms/public-breastfeeding-pictures-celeb-moms-photos/jerry-hall/#_slide

Joan Rivers is the posterchild of PS and i think she looks fantastic and way, WAY better than her former self.

like that crazy f*cker Doug Stanhope says, “it’s your own meat to do what you want to it”. 😆

  17. Dragon says:

I’m scared to hell about surgery. I had my appendix out and that was the most horrible experience I’ve ever made. Me and plastic (unnecessary) surgery? Never!!!
You would only get me under the knife again, if I was unconscious after an accident and couldn’t reject it. But otherwise, never ever again.
Knock on wood! No, I’m not superstitious.

  18. Cathy says:

Whatever, it’s their money, they can spend it how they want. If they want to turn themselves into cat faces then let them.

  19. Fran says:

I’ve seen her in London at a party, and talked to her, and can assure you she hasn’t got any plastic surgery done – nor botox for what I could see..Kudos to her!!

  20. Dana says:

I could never wrap my head around her dumping Bryan Ferry for Jagger.

  21. santacruz says:

Tell it like it is Jerry. Somebody had to say it. I agree, it is a sickness. Why the rush to attain that generic look? So many end up looking hideous.

  22. Sloane Wyatt says:

Taylor Armstrong, Burt Reynolds, and Mickey Rourke DO look monstrous!

It really is OK to age and then eventually die with a natural looking corpse. It’s the circle of life, folks.

  23. ramona says:

Jerry lives in my neighbourhood in London and I’ve seen her without makeup many, many times (taking out the recycling… walking in the park…) and she is a beautiful woman. Here’s hoping I look that good at her age!

  24. Ellie66 says:

I love her she put up with Mick for a long time! I saw that documentary on hbo it’s really good. Jerry has had a bit o tox but she looks great! The other models from the docu look great to but they didn’t show the ones who look scary Janice Dickinson for one so it was kinda one-sided.

  25. claire says:

I totally agree with her. Look, a nose job is one thing. That seems to be something a ton of celebrities have done. But when you keep going back and tweaking, and look nothing like yourself, look like a total freak, and think that looks good? Then something is definitely wrong with you.

    Joan Rivers
    Michael Jackson
    Kim Kardashian
    Lara Flynn Boyle
    Lindsay Lohan
    Mickey Rourke
    Nikki Cox

    • RHONYC says:

Nikki Cox is saddest of all!!! how you gonna f*ck up perfection like that? i think that’s an illness alright. 🙁

  26. Ginger says:

I don’t see a problem with plastic surgery in general. I have had minor tweaking (sclerotherapy on my legs to get rid of spider veins and the results were fantastic!) I would love to have a nose job to rid myself of this horrid bump I’ve had since childhood when I fell and broke my nose. However, I used to work in a hospital with a great plastic surgeon who wanted an eye lift. He had it done and it was botched! If even he, an expert had someone botch his surgery…what kind of luck would I have in finding a good surgeon?? It scared me off from having anything more invasive done. That being said, I love the wrinkles I have so far, they don’t bother me. I have typical stuff for being 40+ (eyes and some forehead) I don’t obsess over that stuff. But I don’t rule out that maybe that attitude will change as I age. I think Jerry looks good for her age. I also agree that she has probably had some minor tweaking.

  27. Hautie says:

Well I have a family full of women with “work” done. But none of it looks obvious. And for them it was about “maintaining”.

Eye lifts and what they all called a mini lift.

Which is getting your jaw line and neck pulled up. To stop the slacking.

None of them will do Botox. Or fillers. They have the most bizarre logic for what they will do.

But I can tell you… I am freaked out by the thought of having my face messed with. And I just can’t see myself ever having anything done. And I am in my early 40’s. Luckily my face has not turned against me! 🙂

Yet, I understand what Jerry is implying.

There are numerous famous girls from her generation, that look like freaks of nature. With really bad work done to their very famous faces.

And of all the models, Janice Dickinson has truly screwed up her face. And body.

Take a look at Nicole Kidman. Who can not leave her face alone.

Lara Flynn Boyle has destroyed her once beautiful face.

Cher has done has had so much bad work done… that Pete Burns looks just like her now. And he is known for having really bad plastic surgery.

Pam Anderson has had numerous unfortunate boob jobs. And I notice recently, she finally had those cocked eyed, clown implants removed. And purchased a set of implants that fit her small frame better. This make her 6 set of fake boobs?

Joan Rivers. There are nothing I can say about that train wreck, that hasn’t already said.

While I can understand having some work done. But too many people go wayyy beyond having maintenance done. It becomes addiction.

  28. TQB says:

That dress is total scroll-down fug!

  29. Jovia says:

Like Jerry’s outfit in second pic down (on the sofa). I would wear that in a heartbeat (well, in the winter, I would).

  30. Eleonor says:

I think she uses fillers…BTW she is right.

  31. Genevieve says:

While I admire her sentiment…I have to say that I ran into Jerry Hall at the La Prairie counter at Saks about a year ago (I was shocked- no minions to run her errands?) here in Dallas, and while lovely (minimal makeup, hair pulled back in a thick braid), her face was pulled back tighter than a Macy’s Parade balloon.

She hasn’t overdone it and looks great for her age. Further, she really *does* have that sparkling, friendly personality and Texas drawl, lol.

But I don’t believe for a minute that she hasn’t has surgery.

  32. TTT says:

She is absolutely correct. Plastic surgery junkies ARE monsters, they look horrible, and many look like melted wax figurines. They aren’t fixing flaws; they are in denial about the aging process, and only making themselves look worse. Where I live, even very young women are having lots of plastic surgery because they think it makes them look high maintenance and they can attract a wealthy man. The sad reality is most of them sit home alone on Friday nights, because wealthy men are hard to find.

    • Anoni Mus says:

I think you hit the nail on the head with the comment about these people not facing the aging process, and desperately hanging on to whatever they feel gives a youthful appearance.

There should be more respect and appreciation for the aging process, not fear. We are all going in the same direction and all the plastic surgery in the world won’t matter when the celebrities (and us) hit 80+ years.

  33. Kate says:

Nicole Kidman makes me saddest of all. She was so naturally lovely looking, and then she suddenly seemed to go from subtle work to a full-on frenzy when she and Tom split, and that horrible cat face appeared. Miserable. (Maybe her surgeon was a Scientologist and did it on purpose after she got labelled a SP! Kidding. I think.)

I’m sure subtle and good work is worth it, but if even major film stars screw up that badly then who can guarantee such a thing?

    • Genevieve says:

I agree re: NK. I thought she’d laid off the botox for a bit, but recent pictures of her make me sad.

Oh well, at least she’s not trying to be blonde anymore. I hate it when gingers do that, it never comes off well.

  34. Jayna says:

    r. She’s throwing everyone into one category. Sure, there are the pulled plasticized women. But tons of women get plastic surgery. Many woman genetically aren’t blessed. They have lots of skin hanging over their eyes or fat pads under their eyes that waking up every morning makes them feel old. Maybe they feel young inside in their fifties but their eyes always look old or tired and they have that loose, jowely look, loose skin under their chin. Why shouldn’t they tighten that? I have been born with great bone structure. But in my sixties I am sure I will do a little something. My friend at
30 already has an older look and looser skin. She has said she
will get plastic surgery. Jane Fonda got it a couple of years ago and looks great. My mom at seventy was an energetic, vibrant woman, with barely any lines around her eyes and still had pretty eyelids, no loose skin, but she hated all the looseness that was happening on her thin face all around her jawline. She would have done something if
    she hadn’t died.

I have big eyes, but for a month one time I kept waking up with heavy swelling. It was awful and I practically had no eyelids. We finally figured out I was allergic to a medicine. But I felt old and ugly every morning for that month trying to get ready. Thank God I got my noncreppy eyelids back. But It made me realize if I get older and ever have eyes like that I would get them done in a heartbeat.

It’s the women like the housewives show with overbotoxed face, too many fillers, blown
up lips, too pulled, etc. It’s overdoing of too many things instead of a freshening up of their face that is so bizarre and unappealing. Actually, they look older becUse they look phoney and sometimes harder with the “done look” they get.

  35. Colin Sullivan says:

So why is getting work done any worse than wearing makeup?

    • TTT says:

The difference should be obvious. You can wash makeup off, but plastic surgery is permanent. Also, there are risks with any type of surgery, especially with anesthesia. Surgery is pretty drastic if you don’t absolutely need to have it.

  36. mln89 says:

i think that jerry is right. people who overdo plastic surgery look like grotesque monsters. and i’ve always like her style, she didn’t mind being glamourous and sexy. i still don’t get why she put up with ugly mick jagger’s crap though.
