Pink’s advice to artists starting out: “You don’t ever get done paying your dues”

Pink covers the newest issue of Billboard Mag. She’s promoting three things – one, her new album, which comes out in a few weeks. Two, her new endorsement deal with Cover Girl, and three, she has some kind of deal with Target. Target is going to help promote her new album in exchange for…? Whatever. I don’t really consider that “selling out” for Pink – although she’s kind of punk chick, her music has always been pop, and I think Pink is smart to work out all of these deals to help her sell her music. Anyway, the Billboard interview is pretty interesting – Pink talks about her career, her decade within the music industry, and a little bit about her marriage:

Her new album: “I felt like I was in this videogame and I collected all the gold coins and talismans you could collect — I had to either move to the next level or quit. There’s this whole techno takeover going on right now that just does my head in, and I knew I didn’t want to do that. I’d rather dance around and sing goofy songs.”

Reaction to her Cover Girl contract: “I always read the responses from the fans. It was 99% positive, but I’ll always have that 1% that’s negative. And my favorite comment was, “Too bad they can’t Photoshop the bitch off your face.” [laughs] That’s actually pretty good.”

Her career faltering in the mid 2000s: “I never looked at it that way. I was always on the road in the U.K. and Australia, and things were really great over there. Then I got to come home and be left alone. And you know what? It gave me lot of time to create my show and to become a performer. I would go on 22-month tours and work my ass off, and it’s been the biggest blessing of my life that now I am a touring artist. It got me out of the popularity contest that music can be sometimes and gave me time to hone my craft as a stage performer. I’m also grateful, and I got to come back and do the Grammys [in 2010]. That was my ‘A-ha.’”

Lessons from a decade in the music industry: “I’ll have 18-, 19-year-old artists who just got signed who’ll come to me asking for advice and I don’t know what to tell people anymore-it’s just so different now. There’s no record company budgets or big pop tours or million-dollar videos. People have to just get creative and figure it out. The music business has changed so much and I credit [weathering] that transition to my manager [Roger Davies] and to hard work. The joke was my first tour opening for ‘N Sync and my 10th tour was opening for Justin [Timberlake]. You have to be humble. I would go and do sold-out arena shows back to back all over Germany, then come and do 800-capacity clubs in Washington, D.C. You don’t ever get done paying your dues.

Whether her new songs reflect any real marital problems she’s facing: “It’s funny. I wrote “Family Portrait” when I was 21 and my parents divorced when I was 9, so I tend to hold onto things. I’m still exorcising some of those demons. And look, I’m in a relationship that I’ve been in for 10 years and it’s never going to be perfect. Carey always jokes, ‘You’re always just mad enough at me to write a song.’ ‘Yep. Thanks, baby, you’re my muse.’”

[From Billboard]

I think Pink is speaking realistically about her relationship – it’s like she’s saying, “Dude, nothing’s perfect. Don’t expect it to be.” I also like that she’s talking about how she seems to be much more popular overseas than in America, and she’s basically making her money off touring. I guess she’s going to tour to support this new album too? I wonder how that’s going to work with Willow. Last thing: Pink is due to perform at the VMAs!

Love this woman. She is so real.

    • Jennifer says:

Yeah she is as real as her hair color. Give me a break. She is one of the most morally corrupt singers in the business.

      • Lady Satan says:

“one of the most morally corrupt singers in the business”

        Where did *that* come from?

      • SW says:

Seriously? Morally corrupt? LMAO…who’s she supposed to more like? Madonna? Justin Beiber? Yeah…. Lol *how* is pink morally corrupt?

      • jes_sayin says:

Yes, her music is over-produced and commercially cheesy… painfully so, but.. i did see her live in concert and the girl can ACTUALLY SING.

Not many today that you can say that about.

      • Laura says:

Love her music, but yeah, she’s fake. She talks about women needing to support each other and then turn around and bash Christina or any other chick…or, in a similar vein, bash female musicians that show skin and then perform in an outfit just as skimpy. Her real personality sucks.

    • Garrish Utley says:

When did this one-trick-pony, bargain-basement Madonna ever pay any dues?

      • Minty says:

Puh-leeze. Do not compare Pink to that plagiarist hack Madonna. Pink actually has talent. She can sing live beautifully while performing acrobatics with aerial silks, as she did at the 2010 Grammys.

Onstage, Madonna shows off her crotch, flashes her boob, and lip syncs. Wow, how gifted. When she does sing live, she uses backup singers to cover her weak vocals. In the studio, Madonna relies heavily on Auto-Tune. She’s trash with ridiculous pretensions.

Madonna hides behind so many fake personas while Pink pretty much stays consistent with her down-to-earth personality. If by “paying dues” you mean sleeping with anyone influential enough to help you at the beginning of your career, then yes, Madonna sure paid her dues. And that shit is documented by journalists.

      she is awesome

  2. Naye in VA says:

Aughh! Love Pink. I’ve heard that a lot of American musicians fare much better overseas. Why is that?

    • Atticus says:

Probably because America loves to build up its own only to make sport out of tearing them down.

  3. MoxyLady007 says:

I love her. I always said that if I ever have a child, her music videos are required watching. She is just amazing as a woman and an artist.

    • MaiGirl says:

I love that you wrote that! If I had a daughter, I would be proud of her if she wanted to be like Pink. May you have awesome daughters!

  4. PrettyTarheel says:

I adore her-why would they photoshop her body into oblivion? She always looks so strong and muscular. . . they gave her Kate Bosworth hips in that black and white photo.

  5. Shitler says:

Add me to the lovefest. Very intelligent & grounded woman.

  6. Joanna says:

wish i knew how to photshop my pics like that!

  7. RocketMerry says:

Pink is amazing. Love her attitude and wish she’ll always do great in everything.

I kinda can’t stand her on/off hubby, though, I heard he’s as close as they come to a lying, cheating bastard and I really do think she deserves so much better.

    • MaiGirl says:

Those rumors don’t seem to die, but I think they have had several versions of their relationship over the 10 years, including an “open” period, if the gossips are to be believed. I really hope that if he is playing away games, it’s because they have a mutual arrangement.

  8. Darlene says:

I love her. Thanks for this article.

  9. Mel says:

I like what she’s saying about paying dues. How many young singers do we see coming through and they know it all and expect it all? And then they disappear after a while. I think acts like Pink have staying power for a reason.

  10. Rux says:

I just really love her and her music. I do not find her to be a sell out and never have. I am glad Cover Girl did choose her as their new face. I am so tired of all these carbon copy models that all seem to blend together yet they do not resemble real women of this world. and I love Tarjayyy — at least she is not endorsing thousand dollar bags or $200 bottles of anti-aging lotion — that to me is selling out.

  11. RHONYC says:

i’m obsessed with her hair. so lovely-edgy. 😉

  12. A Fan says:

I like her, too. Time and time again she says humble, funny, and realistic things in her interviews. After this many years, I doubt it’s an act.

And it’s true – noone ever gets done paying their dues (good advice to all young people these days…especially *coughKristenStewartcough*).

  13. lucy2 says:

She seems to have one of the most level heads in the business, and a great voice. That should serve her well for a lengthy career. More people starting out should take her advice.

  14. Happy21 says:

    I. Love. This. Woman!

I so hope she tours because I have wanted to see her for years and years. I’m in Canada and she came here I think in 2003 or something but I missed her. Since then, I have been waiting…

    • apsutter says:

She’s gonna tour. I was just reading the article on her in Entertainment Weekly and she timed the arrival of her new album and factored in about 2 years for touring. That way she’d be done in time to be around her kid when she goes to preschool.

  15. Ellen says:

She gave an interview to EW about Willow and the tour — she said he timed the album so the tour would happen now, and then they’d be home in two years so Willow could start preschool. She sounded really thoughtful and level-headed about the business and I was impressed (not just about the parental planning, about all the stuff she discussed).

  16. Lindy says:

I really love her–every time I hear a song of hers, I remember how much I enjoy her music. It’s well-constructed, the lyrics are sometimes really thoughtful and interesting (and sometimes just plain fun).

And I appreciate her honesty and her humble attitude. She’s great.

  17. Lindsey says:

Gawd, I fucking love her so hard. I love her songs and “Glitter in the Air,” always brings a little tear to my eye. It’s one of my fave pop songs about love <3

  18. Minky says:

I love her. Since she started out as the kind of r&b-ish sort of singer, to her pure, unadulterated pop songs, to this more grateful and mature artist, I’ve loved her. She cares what her fans thinks, and you can tell from her interactions with them, but at the same time, she has that “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude about what others in the industry are saying. I love her!!

  19. apsutter says:

I love her! I love her attitude and how she’s her own woman. She’s strong and independent and wasn’t looking for anyone or anything else to fulfill herself. I also feel like she’s very under-rated. She’s been knocking around for over a decade and keeps on growing and getting better. I love her new song too. Also Im super psyched that she’s performing at the VMA’s!! Her last performance of “Glitter in the Air” was breathtaking. I could not take my eyes off of her and was so happy the crowd gave her a standing ovation.
