Will Viggo Mortensen sign on to the ‘Thor’ sequel as Dr. Strange?

These are some new photos of Viggo Mortensen “leaving the Variety Gift Lounge at Holt Renfrew during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.” Viggo arrived in Toronto last week, so I have no idea why we don’t have more photos of him. He’s there to promote that freaky twin movie (which he was promoting in Madrid last week too), Everybody Has A Plan. Allegedly, Viggo was also going to be making some appearances on behalf of his supporting part in On the Road, but I didn’t see any photos of him for that film. Of course, Kristen Stewart sort of made everyone else obsolete, gossip-wise. Anyway, I apologize for the lack of Viggo photos – I’ll cover more if and when they come in.

Meanwhile, there are significant rumors that Viggo might be trying his hand at a comic book movie. Seriously! All of the geeks are getting fan-boy stiffies over the idea that Viggo could be joined the cast of the Thor sequel, Thor: The Dark World. The rumor is that the Marvel people and Thor producers want to introduce the “Dr. Strange” villain to the Thor (and Avengers) universe, and that everyone wants to sign Viggo to the role. I feel like I’ve heard rumors about Benedict Cumberbatch for Dr. Strange too, although Cumby might be in consideration for “Ant-Man”. The rumors, according to Slashfilm and other sites, originated with Roger Wardell’s Twitter, and apparently Wardell has been correct many, many times about the Marvel adaptations. So, would you like to see Viggo as Dr. Strange?

I pretty much would like to see Viggo as anything. I just want to see him. 🙂

  2. pinchofsalt says:

Yes, please. The screen’s going to explode with all those yummy guys in one movie. Yay!

  3. Eve says:

GAHHHHHH!!! I wasn’t even going to post today but then I saw this.

It’s just a rumor but please, let this be true.

    Please, please, please, please, please.

P.S.: on a second thought…if this rumor doesn’t turn out to be true, I’ll be seriously disappointed (it’ll be worse than when I heard Mads Mikkelsen wasn’t going to be in the movie anymore).

    • Chatcat says:

I’m with you Eve. Viggo and Hemsworth together on the big screen would be, um, very entertaining! Ok, so just to look at but still……………

    • Mimi says:

Lol Eve. I saw the retreats on twitter and they were very much in the same vein as your post. I think we might need to start a prayer circle. 😉

  4. VV says:

Nerd talk but when did Doctor Strange become a villain?

    • JenD says:

I missed your post when I was posting mine, but methinks there might be confusion of Marvel’s and DC’s Dr. Stranges.

  5. JenD says:

Marvel’s Dr. Strange isn’t a villain. DC’s Dr. Strange is. Just a comic clarification. 🙂

  6. flan says:

I don’t know why we need an Ant-man movie, seeing how he’s a wife beater and was verbally abusive.

    Ugh.

    • JenD says:

      He beat the Wasp??

    • Eve says:

Yeah…I’m really curious to know how (or if) they’re going to turn that character around.

    • jamie says:

I thought it was an Edgar Wright project. So I’m expecting good things.

      • Eve says:

Yes, it is. Edgar Wright is directing it.

I don’t know…apparently, the wife-beating thing was part of one (comic book) story.

I’m almost sure they’ll either avoid it completely or not focus on that. Unless they’re aiming for a darker take on the character (but that would be inconsistent with Marvel’s movies universe so far).

  7. Lyssie89 says:

How many villains are going to be in this movie? We already have Tom Hiddleston and Christopher Eccleston signed on. I love Viggo, but I hope this doesn’t become a bloated mess like Spiderman 3 with waaaaay too many different bad guys.

  8. Jen says:

Yep, not a villain. I blame RDJ. Iron Man and the Avengers have turned this 40yo stay-at-home mom into a comic geek.

  9. Kaiser says:

Should I take “villain” out of the title? I thought the way other sites were describing the character, Dr. Strange would be Thor’s foe. Eh. I hate writing about this nerd sh-t.

    • JenD says:

He actually founded an Avengers-type group called the Defenders, which included the Hulk. He doesn’t always work alongside Thor, but he’s not a villain. Now, if you start talking Batman, that Dr. Strange is a villain. 🙂

My hubby has turned me into a quasi-geek.

    • flourpot says:

Kaiser, my dear, this nerd sh-t you speak of is important to some of us. (: If you don’t like writing about it, may I suggest you pass the chore to someone else on staff? I love you lots so I’m going to let you in on some background.

Dr Strange is actually a pretty cool character. He started as a in-it-for-the-money surgeon until an accident damaged his hands. He started travelling the world to find any crazy cure which left him broke and homeless.

He ended up believing in a lot of the mysticism and he titled himself Sorcerer Supreme.

He must have found something that worked because his powers stem from magic. Telepathy, energy blasts, astral projection. Pretty cool, really. Think a really dark Harry Potter. (:

He’s a pretty decent read if you like comics.

  10. Mia 4S says:

It would be cool, very cool. Sadly I’d be very surprised. Viggo has a bit of a rep of playing hard and looking for big money on blockbusters (as he should!). Remember relatively speaking Marvel is cheap as hell when it comes to most actor’s initial contracts. Oh well, maybe he’s a fan and we will get lucky.

    • V4Real says:

I actually heard and read that he was very easy to work with and that’s why some people called him Viggo with no ego. I would love to see him as Dr. Strange; it would be so different from the characters he usually play.

  11. serena says:

Oh please, yes!!! Make him do it, it’d be so cool!

  12. Michelle says:

Love Dr. Strange and would love to see him in the Averngers universe and Viggo would be an awesome choice. Definitely not a villian. He’s the sorcerer supreme, though and deals with other worlds, so him being involved with Thor makes sense.

  13. Malificent says:

I’m fresh off the John Travolta post, so thanks Kaiser for helping me to scrub my brain. Viggo needs to sit John down and explain that this is the classy way to be middle-aged and still hot.

And yay to Viggo as a villain! Although I first misread Dr. Strange as Dr. Strangelove, which would have made for an even more interesting casting choice….

  14. j.eyre says:

Tom Hiddleston, Chris Hemsworth, Zachary Levi, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson and now possibly Viggo all on the same screen? Won’t this create a “hotness” vacuum in the theater and suck up all the sexy? I can barely handle the thought of this – the movie might kill me.

  15. KellyinSeattle says:

Am I the only one who thinks he needs a better fitting jacket and a haircut? I don’t get his appeal at all…I know I’m way outnumbered here. I do like the cleft in his chin.

    • bitsopieces says:

I agree with you, Kelly. I don’t get the appeal, but I do like a cleft chin too. He was very handsome as Aragorn but he aged badly. A friend of mine met him in New York and said he looks waaay older than his Hollywood air brushed photos.

  16. Feebee says:

I know not of this Dr Strange but if it means Viggo being on screen then yes please.

Reading the comments has left me a little clearer on Dr S but not whether he would be a friend or foe to Thor. Would it matter on how they’re writing Loki? If he stays on the dark side would that make too many villians?

  17. Boromir's bytch says:

Now that Eastern Promises 2 has been shelved I guess this would be something different for him. Trying to think if I’ve ever seen Viggo in a comedy other than 28 Days.

    • bitsopieces says:

28 days was a comedy?? Boy, did that whole cast blow it then because I didn’t laugh once. What is funny about drunk driving and practically killing people?? I don’t get it. And even with that serious subject material, the film was a snooze fest although I have to say that I don’t think Bullock is a good actress anyway.

  18. Shannon says:

As a HUGE DC fan, I hope not. I want to see him in a DC movie not a Marvel movie. A lot of DC fans would like to see him play Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman films. I don’t agree with that choice, but I want him in any DC movie verse a Marvel movie.

    My fangirl has spoken…lol

  19. carol says:

Viggo. Start sleeping on your back. Please. Thank you

  20. ZenB!tch says:

I’m a fan of Viggo’s and not a huge fan of Cumberbatch but after Googling Dr. Strange, I want Cumberbatch – he LOOKS like Dr. Strange – albeit a tad young but he has the cheekbones and height.

    http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters4/drstrange.html

He doesn’t sound like a villain to me either.

What is an “Ant Man” that doesn’t sound pretty.

  21. Jilly Bean says:

    he is so hot

  22. Charlotte says:

He had a great rep on TLOTR set. Would be there supporting the xtas and chatting and being amiable; put in the long hours and wasn’t pretentious at all.
A friend of mine had a huge crush on him (of course, ’cause, duh) but one day she saw ‘a homeless man stumble out of a bottle store, swigging from his paper bag’ and realised, to her infinite sorrow, that it was Viggo.
    I still would.

  23. bitsopieces says:

I don’t know about this one. First of all, Mortensen’s so called “critically acclaimed acting” is when he is either totally nude or uses extreme violence. I don’t call that great acting. But secondly, and maybe I should have said this first, Chris Hemsworth is SO FREAKIN HOT that it doesn’t matter who else is in this movie! All eyes on Chris. That’s for sure!!! Now, THAT’S an actor. I LOVED him as the Huntsman. And wasn’t Mortensen up for that role too, but he wanted too much money? I am so happy money hungry Mortensen got passed over. I hate when Hollywood stars get too greedy. And again — HOT, HOT, HOT CHRIS!!
