Zooey Deschanel kind of exhausts me. You know I love New Girl, and I’ve grown to love Zooey as an actress, and I’ve grown to love the “Jess” character. But I need Zooey is small doses, confined to half-hour sitcoms and such. A little goes a long way. This is Zooey at the Emmys last night, wearing a custom-made Reem Acra gown which… sigh… let’s analyze.
This is a pretty dress, in and of itself. The construction is lovely, it’s very “fairy princess” and girly, which isn’t my taste but I can appreciate when that kind of thing is done well, and this is done well. But… but… I don’t think it’s a great dress for Zooey. It’s TOO princessy and girly when she’s already got an excess of that in her personality. Plus, it’s too light for her skin, I think. As for the bangs… we’re never going to convince her to give them up. She has to reach that anti-bangs moment herself. I will only say this THIS is NOT red-carpet hair. At all.
And here’s Zooey’s New Girl costar Hannah Simone, wearing silk Emilio Pucci in a shade of yellow. Yellow was EVERYWHERE last night (I’m devoting a whole post to it in a moment), so I shall give Hannah credit for being “on trend”. That being said, I wouldn’t even like this dress in a different color. I’m pretty sure Halle Berry wore something remarkably similar several years ago at the Oscars, only hers was silver-grey and designed by Versace.

I remember when Hannah was on Much Music… took me forever to make the connection when I was watching New Girl.

I agree the shade of blue is washing her out. And I think the bodice of the dress – ahhh – needs to come up further. Her breasts seem to be reaching down to find it and that’s not right. I liked the dress overall although I would never wear it myself – too plump, too old (50) to wear fairy princess dress. But I would love to have it for Halloween with a wand and a tiara. And I mean that in a nice way!
Agree, the light color is washing her out, and a darker tone would make it a little less princessy.

Wanted to add that at this point I just think her ‘adorkable’ shtick is making her look older. And not cute.
The top part of Zoey’s dress is nice. The bottom part is a tulle mess. I actually like the colour and I think it looks good on someone with fair skin like hers.
I LOVE Zooey, really and truly. I love her as an actress and a muscician. I also very often love her quirky vintage style, but this is not one of those times. That dress is way too “sweet” for my tastes and the color is blah. I think sometimes she tries too hard to be cute and sweet and it backfires. As for her bangs, I think she does that because she has a HUGE forehead.
Hannah is beautiful and looks great, but that dress is boring, even in a bright color. Meh.
I really like Zooey’s dress. I think its one of her best dresses. And definitelt a step up from last year when she wore that pepto bismol pink prom dress from last year.
I like the upper part of Zooey´s dress, the bottom part looks like layers of tablecloth stitched together, ugh.
Also what happened to her face? Tragic. The hair? Tragic as well, looks like a bangsy version of Snooki´s Prom hair.

I love Zooey, but I agree I can only do it in small doses. I only have so much tolerance for kitten heels, vintage dresses, and the ukulele.

Zoey Deschanel looks ridiculous. It feels like she’s constantly shoving that retro style down our throats and it always looks like she stole her grandma’s prom picture for inspiration.
For once, I’d like to see her in something modern and sleek.
I like the yellow dress. If I had dark skin and hair I would wear bright colors all the time-it’s so flattering. Simone is really gorgeous-the bangs need to go though, her face is way too pretty to be hidden like that.
When my daughter loves it, I think yes for a teenager!

I just can’t explain why I don’t like Ms. Deschanel’s dress, only that it makes me frown. If it’s the breast gap or the ballerina mauling at the bottom or the Justin Timberlake baby blue…
I’m SO OVER her bangs. In other news, her makeup is really nice. Love her lipstick.

I gotta disagree with you Kaiser on Hannahs dress. I like it and she wears it nicely. It’s not overdone.
Love the show, love the girls, and I love both dresses! I think they both look fantastic. How come everyone on CB is so anti-bangs?
It’s a great dress… for a five year old playing dress up.
She happened to be the last person on the red carpet right as I tuned in and she was doing that “I’m uncomfortable with this strapless dress and I don’t want to yank it up” slouch that was super unflattering. I thought her boobs were just going to poke out.
Oh, and that yellow sheer dress with the split ALMOST looks like she just peed down the front of the dress.
From the next up I don’t mind it, but Zoey’s look from the neck down is too young. I usually like her style because it’s kind of different but someone needs to give her the “you’ve over 30” memo.

That color washes zooey out. Herhair is horrible. Zooey is blah. Hannah is gorge. Yellow does her well.
That dress screams “wardrobe malfunction”. The bustier looks like it’s hanging on to her boobs for dear life.
Not a fan of the way the dress sits at the boob area and I wish the dress was a bit darker in color. Love the hair and think it’s very red carpet.
It’s not photographing well at all. I can’t see the detail. Overall though, I think she looks fantastic. It’s a beautiful dress on a beautiful girl. Playing it safe and staying in your comfort zone is better than looking like a trainwreck imo.

Zooey’s bangs trauma ruined her entire look in my opinion. The dress in and of itself is not the best look on her. However, she could have pulled it off if she had let her hair down and swept her bangs to the side. A romantic hairdo would have turned her Disney princess look into more of a sexy grownup princess which would have been appropriate for the Emmys.

Maybe I have Zooey over load or something… I loved her in Almost Famous and The Good Girl. Now I’m getting kinda bored with the whole quirky, hipster, bubbly thing she drags everywhere with her. And her sense of style, while unique and probably true to herself, really needs some fine-tuning.
Her face has settled, but it’s still different.
I don’t understand peoples’ love for Deschanel at all. She’s a terrible actress (totally wooden), and a terrible singer (nasal and warbly). Her “quirkiness” just comes off as spacey and unintelligent.
She does have lovely skin though, it’s nice to see actresses rocking the “not orange” look.
I just want to hike Zooey’s dress UP. It looks as if it’s going to fall right off of her.
Hannah is gorgeous but that dress does nothing for her. Well, the color is nice. But the shape and fabric really don’t flatter her.

Hannah really is beautiful, I’m surprised she went with such an unflattering dress, could have been a real star making moment for her.
There’s no reason this girl can’t look fabulous. She’s cute and has a nice figure. However, she never quite makes the mark, either with her outfits or her haircut.
The soft blue looks beautiful with Zooey’s pale skin and dark hair; however, I’m not a big fan of the strapless top look, nor the full skirt. The bright yellow dress looks a bit better as a cut, but the color isn’t that great.
