Connie Britton on adopting as a single mom: ‘I assumed I’d be doing it with a man’

The lovely Connie Britton covers the November issue of Redbook, and People Magazine has some advance quotes for us. I know Connie, 45, from American Horror Story, where we saw her character go through hell before finally achieving a macabre sort of peace. (I won’t give away any spoilers in case you have ambitions of watching the DVDs. I give it a B, it’s a fun, scary show that pulls you in, but it often seems ridiculous. I’m totally watching it this season!) Anyway we’ve seen Connie looking amazing on screen (I want her hair!) and having some hit and miss moments on the red carpet. It’s nice to see her styled so well in this photoshoot. Is that sweater photo an homage to Ann Margaret in Bye Bye Birdie? That’s what I’m reminded of when I see a gorgeous redhead in just a sweater, but I guess Ann’s was much different than this one.

In Redbook, Connie talks about her decision to adopt as a single mom, and says she realized that she didn’t need a man to have a child. Connie adopted a baby boy from Ethiopia last November. She also acknowledges that she’s just as horny as usual. That’s pretty much what I read into it, but of course she phrased it more delicately. Here’s more:

Connie Britton’s TV resumé is nothing if not well-rounded.

The actress, 45, has played working mom Tami Taylor on Friday Night Lights, the haunted and troubled Vivien on American Horror Story, and now, she’ll portray fading country star Rayna James on the upcoming Nashville.

But for all her characters’ differences, Britton is keen on bringing one unifying characteristic to each of the roles.

“It’s important in whatever character I play that I show as many different levels of what it is to be a woman as I can. That includes being sexy!” Britton tells Redbook in its November issue.

“I want to get rid of the whole idea that women who are wives and mothers and working in the world no longer have any interest in their sexuality, because that’s not my experience.”

As for her experience with adoption (she brought home her son from Ethiopia in 2011) and sharing advice with other Hollywood moms who adopt, “me and Angelina and Sandra Bullock and Mary-Louise Parker just get together every weekend, drink rosé and talk about kids! No, that is not the case,” jokes Britton.

“Not that I wouldn’t love to get together with all of them and discuss their experiences,” she adds. “But there is a community of people who have adopted children from Ethiopia, and that’s something I want to be a part of for sure. To me it’s really important for my son to have a strong sense of that background.”

Britton says she’s also got a strong sense of herself as a single mother – even if that’s not the way she’d planned it.

“I always knew I wanted a child, and I always assumed I’d be doing it with a man … Then my parents passed away within three years of each other,” says the actress.

“Right after that, a light bulb went off in my head and I thought, ‘What am I waiting for?’ I wasn’t in a relationship at the time, but I thought, ‘This is something I want to do. I can do it.’ “

This reminds me that “Nashville” premieres tomorrow night! I’m going to tape it. Also a lot of good shows are coming back now and it feels a little like Christmas. (Although I am really angered that NBC has pushed back what is likely to be the last season of Community. Screw NBC!) Anyway I like Connie and think she gives a fun interview. She’s not saying anything revelatory here, but she cracked a cute joke about hanging out with other celebrity adoptive moms and drinking wine. Isn’t Rose crap wine though? I don’t know, I don’t drink it.

Good for Connie for adopting a child when she had love to give. It sounds like she’s doing her best to make sure he stays connected to Ethiopia too.

Here are some photos of Connie and her son, Yoby, at LAX in September and July. He’s adorable!

Connie and her son, Yoby, are shown at LAX on 9-13-12 and 7-16-12. So cute! Credit: FameFlynet.

I adore Connie! She is drop dead gorgeous, a fantastic actress and I respect her choice to adopt her baby boy and give him an opportunity for an incredible life.
For the life of me, I cannot imagine a world where Connie is single. My gosh, men out there, get with it! 🙂

    • Chatcat says:

I totally agree with you. This woman is an amazing talent who happens to be gorgeous and witty! That she has a big heart is the cherry (no pun intended) on the top for me as one of her fans.

Whoa, whoa, whoa…let’s get to the important stuff here, shall we? … They pushed back the premiere of Community!?!?! To when? I thought it was on the 19th?!?! CURSE YOU NBC!!! Six Seasons and A Movie!!!

P.S. I want her hair color.

    • Celebitchy says:

I just read this article that claims NBC is doing it to maybe give more promo time to Community and they might give Community Thursday night back, but I’m not buying it!

      • Jenna says:

‘Whitney’ should’ve been canceled a long time ago; they may have something there with waiting though. I hear that ‘Animal Practice’ and ‘Guys With Kids’ are waiting to be axed. I just want my Community back!

        FOR GREENDALE! 😛

    • the original bellaluna says:

Yeah, NBC is definitely not making any friends with all these debacles they’ve engaged in lately. I’m over them. I don’t even watch their network any more. (I do watch USA, which I know is NBC/Universal-owned, but I’ll not give them any other ratings!)

      • Chatcat says:

O Bella, me too, no NBC, they totally suck. However, I will not give up White Collar or Covert Affairs on USA. At least they haven’t screwed that up…yet.

      • the original bellaluna says:

Chat, Yup, I can’t give up Covert Affairs & Burn Notice (both coming back soon!), and I do like Royal Pains and catching up on NCIS & SVU. (I watch new SVU online, so as not to “up” NBC’s numbers.)

What started with the Leno/Conan mess, cancelling the original L&O without so much as a “fond farewell,” and how they’ve dicked around Community, followed by the whole Ann “leaving” The Today show debacle (not to mention how much power that troll Lauer was given on the show) was just firmly cemented by that shameful lack of respect on September 11.

And there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for whatever it is they’ve turned the former SciFi channel into, or cancelling Caprica! Raspberries to NBC! 😛

NBC is allergic to learning, what other explanation is there?

You said tape, did you mean TiVo or dvr? I say that too, thought I was the only one! I like her, she seems classy but well grounded. Her son is adorable too!

I adore Connie, and am looking forward to her new show, it’s supposed to be really good.
If you know her from AHS and NOT Friday Night Lights, you need to change that pronto. FNL is one of the best shows ever and she was fantastic in it. So much better than AHS.

I read NBC pushed back Community to give more promo time to their NEW shows. Like they were going to bother promoting Community anyway, yeah right.

    • Arlene says:

She and Coach made THE most realistic married couple on that show, my husband and I downloaded FNL and watched the entire series over a couple of week. Loved it.

There are a lot of nice quality rose wines out there (Bastianich Rosato de Refosco is killer).

Love Connie Britton. I might even suffer through Hayden Panettiere to watch “Nashville.”

    • Leigh says:

Trust me, as someone who LOATHES Hayden Panettiere, “Nashville” is well worth it! I watched the pilot on Hulu last week, and it’s definitely going to be in my weekly rotation — never mind that I needed a new show to follow like I need another hole in my head. -_-

  6. the original bellaluna says:

I LIKE her!! And BABY CHEEKS!!!! *squeals* 😀

  7. Hakura says:

I think it was brave to move forward in a society that can still looks down on single women adopting. Good for her!

  8. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

OK – did I miss something with the Nashville premier date? I thought it was tmrw night too, but I heard how the pilot was so good from last Wednesday, so I checked it out over the weekend and it was on Hulu…I watched it and…yes, it was amazing.

    • Bluedog says:

No, you didn’t miss the premier. Hulu sometimes gets the first episode of certain shows before the premier date as part of its deal with the networks.

  9. Skipper says:

Her son looks nothing like her?

  10. Sarah says:

Did you really just write that you were going to “tape it” ? 😉

  11. Kristen says:

I know her primarily as Nicki from Spin City. I think that makes me older than dirt.

  12. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

    Little Face! Aw.
