Jennifer Lawrence wins the Best Actress Oscar, falls up the stairs (poor girl)

This was the hardest category to predict, I think. A month ago, I would have said that Jessica Chastain was definitely the favorite to win. But then the SAGs happened and Jennifer Lawrence was the one to beat. And then Emmanuelle Riva had a late surge because many Oscar voters thought she should get a de facto “lifetime achievement” Oscar. Quvenzhané Wallis and Naomi Watts both got early buzz, but the buzz faded significantly over the past month. I guess Jennifer and Emmanuelle came into the Oscars with the most buzz.

… And Jennifer won! And she immediately became a million times more likeable by falling up the stairs! Girl, I feel you. I’ve fallen up stairs too. She seemed genuinely shocked and it didn’t seem rehearsed. I liked her short little speech and I liked the she gave a shout-out to Emmanuelle for her birthday. I think I’m in shock a little bit – Jennifer is ONLY 22 years old! She’s one of the youngest Best Actress winners ever. Oscar historians: is she the youngest Best Actress winner ever?

Congrats, Jennifer! I hope you didn’t hurt yourself falling up those stairs! Poor thing. She handled that so much better than anyone else could have.

Memo to Anne Hathaway: this is what an Oscar speech should be.

    • Cool Phosphorescent Shimmer says:

      + a bazillion

    • Shira says:

      X Infinity!!!

    • Katie says:

You KNOW Anne is seething. She may have achieved her goal, but Jennifer Lawrence scooped up the top prize and genuinely charmed everyone. I was lukewarm about JL (I think she’s talented and sweet, but man did she ever suck in X-Men) but she’s definitely the type of girl people want good things to happen to and I was so happy for her. Her tripping adorably is what everyone is going to remember about that night (it’s on the front page of one of the NYC newspapers — I think The Post), not Anne.

      • Shira says:

But I think Jen would’ve gotten more attention even if she hadn’t fell because she was Best Actress not Best SUPPORTING Actress.

  2. Migdalia says:

You could tell she did not want to get up after she fell lol. Hahaha no aww…she just won an Oscar no one is gonna care that she fell because of a big dress! ;-p

I think it’s pretty effed up to nominate a 9 year old with the possibility of losing. Is she mentally prepared for that??? I mean it’s The Oscars not the little leagues.

    • Isa says:

Eh, JMO, but I think it will be even more effed up if said 9 year old takes this all so seriously that she will be devastated by it.

Being nominated at 9 is a huge accomplishment in itself. Take it for what it is, and enjoy the hell out of it, but any parent worth their salt should know better than to tell her that she is going to win and that if she doesn’t the world ends.

This is not a comment on whether her performance might have merited a win or not, but she really had no chance. If only BECAUSE she is 9. If there were some people who balked at Lawrence and Chastain being too new in the industry to vote for them, what chance does Wallis have? Her parents should know that and reinforced the notion that she did a great job and deserves the recognition but winning is not the point. I mean, we really do not want another Lilo who spouts off about winning Oscars all the time without actually wanting to do the work.

      • Migdalia says:

True. I only worried because I watched her in interviews and on the red carpet and it looks like she had her hopes really high. Sometimes it doesn’t matter that people tell you “it’s an honor to be nominated” blah blah yada yada…psychologically that can get you down. I hope you’re right though…and Jennifer didn’t get the Oscar the first nomination as well so yeah there’s hope for Q. Her performance looked moving.

      • jaye says:

@Migdalia I think any 9 year old would be excited about being nominated for ANY award and visibly disappointed when they don’t win. Kids are really honest with their emotions.

    • LAK says:

PLEASE……it can go either way. It depends on your support system.

Tatum O’Neal and Anna Paquin won best supporting oscars at ages 10 and 11 respectively. Tatum turned out a mess, Anna is alright.

Let’s not forget when they handed out Juvenile Oscars. Shirley Temple received her oscar at 6yrs old and has lived a completely sensible, scandal free life vs Judy Garland received it at 16yrs, and her life turned out a hot mess parallel to Lilo.

  3. Original A says:

Loved her speech! Marlee Matlin won Best Actress when she was 21, so Jennifer is the second youngest I believe.

    • Chicagogurl17 says:

Tatum O’neal won at 13 or was that for supporting? Jennifer looked beautiful and her speech was humble and heartfelt (no Harvey though, right?). She handled the fall well and bless her heart for hiking up the big skirt and pushing through.

    • mssnarnd says:

Tatum won Best Supporting Actress at age nine for “Paper Moon.” Not the queen’s title but still impressive.

  4. Dbradfo says:

She seems to be on her way to be the next Meryl – she has the same likability factor and she is a great actress. The way she handled the stair falling incident seemed exactly the way Meryl would’ve handled such a situation.

    • kibbles says:

I choose Emily Blunt to be the “Meryl” of her generation. I like Jennifer Lawrence but I think it is all coming too fast and easy for her. This reminds me of Gwyneth’s win for Shakespeare in Love. Weinstein has a lot of power and influence and he has used that to help Jennifer Lawrence win this year’s Oscar as “unfair” as that may be to the other nominees. I’m sure Lawrence’s career is set for life if she chooses to remain in Hollywood, but I don’t agree with her win. Her performance in SLP was not Oscar worthy in my opinion. I think things might be better in the long run for someone like Emily Blunt who is picking more independent projects and slowly building up her career to possibly take home an Oscar in her 30s or 40s.

      • HK9 says:

Yes she’s young but her performance was stellar. With Gweneth, her performance was medicore at best and everytime I watch that movie Shakespeare in Love (I love Shakespeare so I can’t help myself) I still can’t figure out why she nominated…

      • StaCat1 says:

Lawrence’s performance and paltrow’s performances are quite different. And their competition those years was different too. I can say I truly belive lawrence held her own against Riva and Chastain this year. Tiffany was a deeply flawed character and she made her loveable and real.
I cannot say I truly believe Paltrow should have won. Blanchett was ROBBED by Weinstein and machine…no doubt about it.

    • Mazunte says:

I choose Mia Wasikowska to be the next Meryl. I don’t think that JLawrence was that great in SLP. Not Oscar worthy for sure. She seems to be a lovely girl though, and the fall was cute. I don’t think she should be worried about it.

      • kibbles says:

Mia is another good choice. I think the next “Meryl” will be someone low key who is slowly building up their career. I understand JLaw’s appeal as being the likable girl next door from Kentucky. She’s like the all-American girl. Let’s see what she does after the Hunger Games. She might want to take some time off or do some smaller independent projects. She is too young to determine what will happen in 10 years. I just think that Weinstein is behind all of this and I find it too much that she has won so many accolades for SLP. Hunger Games maybe, but there are so many great performances out from actresses who don’t get the recognition they deserve and SLP has been blow way out of proportion.

      • Vivian says:

I soooo agree about Mia; she is building up her skills and diversifying her roles.

      • FassDaActor says:

I agree. You are so right about Mia. I don’t like to label anyone the next…I know her from In Treatment and 3 other movies and she has depth and range. She is a very strong actress. Jenn is a lovely young woman. I enjoyed her work in Winter’s Bone and Hunger Games. I don’t feel like this performance is Oscar worthy. But then again, the meaning has changed. It’s a $$$. It’s lost it’s value big time!

      • StaCat1 says:

Bottom line: there will never be another Meryl.

      • s says:

I completely agree that there will never be another Meryl, but in terms of who’s coming closest, I don’t think it’s going to be someone who’s slowly building up their career. Meryl was nominated for an Oscar for the 2nd movie she ever did and won for her 5th so she was never slow and steady…

    • Camille (TheOriginal) says:

I think Jessica Chastain has the chops to become the next Meryl. Having seen JLaw in 2 films so far, I think she is vastly over rated. JMO.

      • Pee says:

@camille(theOriginal) Chastain is 36 and Lawrence is 22 i wouldnt want to compare them as actresses, when the age difference is so big
Chastain is not the new meryl, at chastains age meryl had already won an oscar. The reason people compare meryl and Lawrence is that meryl was a prodigy too who had success from the get go and chastain has come to it late. But i think its a different time now, Meryl is a of her time so the next great actress like that wont have a similar type career imo.

    • Esti says:

Meryl is Meryl. I don’t think there’s any need to try to anoint every young talented actress as the next her. I enjoyed both JLaw and Chastain’s performances on their own merits and I’m sure we’ll see more great work from them both, but Meryl is who she is because she’s turned it out for DECADES. I think it does a disservice to everyone involved to compare every actress to her.

    • Amanda says:

No one can be the next Meryl Streep. There’s only one Meryl. I think Jennifer’s win had a lot to do with the fact that Harvey is behind the campaigning, her performance wasn’t Oscar worthy, the movie in itself wasn’t. Too much hype is not good for one’s career and she’s overrated already. But I wish her luck, because the fall is not very nice.

    • ??? says:

Just a couple of years ago, media outlets were touting Jennifer as the next Charlize.

I know showbiz comparisons aren’t meant to be taken too literally, but regardless, they’re cliche, overdone, and unnecessary, and they can even play a part in contributing to an actor’s decline.

Though I do like her, I’m not yet convinced that Lawrence is a mega-talent, but if she does prove to have long-term staying power in Hollywood, she should be able to carve out her O-W-N niche and not be the next anyone, let alone Streep.

    • CC says:

There isn’t a “next Meryl” IMO. I’m kind of a fan of women’s gymnastics and popular presenters keep harping about the “next Nadia”. That’s not how it goes. IF (big if) she’s going to ever be that famous, her name will stand on its own, not by attaching itself to someone else’s.

    • mel says:

Oh, SHUT UP! Meryl is a class of her own and Jennifer has little talent/range to keep up with her hype

    • bigt says:

You really think she has the talent of a young Meryl Streep? I have seen her in 2 movies and don’t see it. She is likeable and pretty, but have not seen any talent or depth close to Meryl.

    • Oops says:

I disagree, meryl is an amazing actress and jennifer will never have her talent and meryl has class not Jennifer apparently (she acts like Kristen Steward here)http://www.justjared.com/2013/02/25/jennifer-lawrence-middle-finger-flash-in-oscars-press-room/

  5. MG says:

I couldn’t watch it after she fell. I felt so bad and embarrassed for her. I get like that, embarrassed for people on TV, stupid I know. I need to rewind it and watch it. I love her so much!

    • Shira says:

      You should definitely watch it.
I was so emotional I didn’t even notice she fell, I just thought it was the emotions doing her in and she just.. collapsed.

      • MG says:

I just watched it and she was so charming. I just adore her and I think she has a very long career ahead of her.
And how much do you love Hugh Jackman?!?!? That was him I believe running to her aid. He is divine.

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I know! Hugh..sigh..what a gentleman. He is perfection.

    • the original bellaluna says:

That was a whole lotta dress for her, and you should watch. BCoop got up and ran to her to help her up, but she managed. That made me like HIM more.

  6. LeBarron says:

Lindsay Lohan’s head will explode in 3…2…

  7. Samantha says:

Tripping only made her seem infinitely more likable. Somewhere in the audience, Anne Hathaway was asking, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

All jokes aside, I just hope such early success doesn’t change her for the worst.

  8. Gelina says:

    Congratulations!!!

  9. Gigi says:

I’m so honestly happy that she won.. I WASN’T even her fan before I saw her tonight 🙂

  10. Mirella says:

I love her! Her speech was perfect & I loved how shocked she won 🙂

  11. Cece says:

I can’t believe she won. I was really shocked. At 22 she is, I believe, the second youngest winner. Marlee Matlin was at 21 the youngest winner for her role in Children of a Lesser God.

  12. tabby says:

Sorry too have to rain on y’all parade but she didn’t deserve that Oscar, it should have been the french actress. In my opinion Jennifer can’t act, this Oscar is going to blow her damn head up. Wonder who’s gonna win next year Kristen Stewart. I just can’t with this girl, glad she fell though. That made my night.(:

    • Christine says:

Wow, what a bitchy thing to say. You must be a delight to be around daily.

    • magda says:

I hate when people say ‘this french actress’. If you really appreciate her work, you should write ‘Emanuelle Riva. And as much I love Ms. Riva and think that Amour was amazing, I still think Jennifer made really god job with her role.
ps. when I thinking about Ms. Riva’s nomination I begin bitching about lack of nomination for Jean-Louis Trintignant. In my opinion he was the best part of Amour.

      • Original A says:

While I love DDL, I actually though Jean-Louis Trintignan was even better 🙂 I preferred Ms. Riva to Lawrence, but all in all JLaw gave a good performance. It does seem a bit Gwyneth Paltrow to me though, a very good performance being awarded over a great one.

      • Lauli says:

Jennifer was good but Emmanuelle Riva was formidable. The same goes for DDL and Jean Louis Trintignant.

    • Isa says:

Her fall made your night? That’s incredibly petty, but hey, whatever.

I’m sure it didn’t ruin her night though. Besides the fact that she’s been doing klutzy things like that all season and laughs it off, SHE WON. As much as haters hate it, SHE WON.

      • CC says:

Besides it’s endearing for a huge contigent to see she’s graceful even when she makes a mess of herself, even if it was an accident. And it was an accident in any case.

I’m not a SUPERFAN but I like her well enough.

Besides, a bit of class clown at the oscars (even if it wasn’t her intention) is just what that stuffy ceremony needs.

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

That’s right, thank you. She won and has the last laugh. Any girl who get joy from another girl falling down, that’s pretty cruel…esp when she is likeable and you prob dont even know her personally ..anyway, moving on..yay JLaw!!!!

    • aud says:

you obviously can’t appreciate good acting.

Jennifer is a great young talent. She’s able to really project her emotions with her eyes in a way that makes you feel for the character. You can see that’s she’s really feeling it and wearing her emotions for the world to see. She’s very open and pays attention to details.

Imo, winter’s bone is still her best performance(at least that I have seen, she has a few that I haven’t seen yet).

But even if you dislike someone, being happy over their public humiliation is pretty horrible. you should be ashamed

      • Zozo says:

“She’s able to really project her emotions with her eyes in a way that makes you feel for the character.”

She IS a good actress, but THIS sentence about her eyes is so not true.

    • domino says:

I totally agree. She is only being nominated for her looks or because someone likes her. I’m sorry but that’s the way it is in Hollywood, says other actors.

    • smith says:

What a jerk you are – cheering people who fall and trip?

JLaw handled it flawlessly and will laugh it off and actually make herself more likeable. Check the Internet comments – I’ve seen more “I like her better even more now” than I can count.

She’s young, rich, beautiful, etc. and you’re a sad, pathetic person on your couch hoping others fail to make yourself feel better.

  13. Moi says:

She is so real and funny. LOVE that girl. Congrats to her!

  14. booboocita says:

She’s just delightful, isn’t she? I appreciate her humility. All the same, I do wish Jessica Chastain had won, as I thought hers was the superior performance. I’m not entirely disappointed, though, as JLawrence really was good.

  15. Gelina says:

Oscar historians: is she the youngest Best Actress winner ever? No, a 5 year “Child star Shirley Temple won a special Oscar as “Outstanding Personality of 1934” for her song-and-dance number “On the Good Ship Lollipop” in Bright Eyes”.

  16. LadyLupton says:

I’m so pleased she won! I cried when she did (but I am full of crazy 40 weeks pregnant hormones). I was so embarrassed for her that she fell, but you’re right, it made her so human and she managed it so well.

I agree with the posters above that she has a Meryl vibe and god I hope she hangs on to it.

I don’t think she’ll go the Way of the Goop, she’s too talented and grounded for that. I’m sure her mum or some other family member would slap her if she ever did.

    Hurray for Jennifer!

    • aud says:

lol I’m 35 weeks and cried while watching Silver Linings Playbook for the first time last night. Definitely hormones. Can’t wait for baby to arrive so I can stop being such a hot mess

    • allons -y alonso says:

I would have liked to have seen Emmanuelle Riva take it but I’m happy for Jennifer Lawrence’s win. She has staying power, but I wouldn’t stretch it calling her the next Meryl Streep. If I were Lawrence I would hate that comparison. She should stand on her own

    • pretty says:

yeah her family seems so normal and happy~!
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5kaqsQ9mCs (Backstage interview at SAGs)
It made me tear a little bit.
She’s so normal and goofy and funny:))

  17. Glaughy says:

Haha OMG I felt so bad for her when she fell. I can’t imagine what was going through her brain at that moment, it was kind of cute though! Could have been much worse, at least she wasn’t on the stage and at least her boobs didnt fall out!

  18. Shira says:

    Poor girl?
    Um, no.
Hugh Jackman and Bradley Cooper rushed to her.

What a moment for Jennifer, I’m so thrilled… it’s 7:20AM and I have been up for 25 hours, so happy I didn’t stay up for nothing.
The ceremony blew up until those last 3 categories.

  19. Chicoulina says:

I think she’s overrated and will disappear in a few years.

  20. Garvels says:

This sounds really mean and it is……..but I bet Anne Hathaway is bumming that Jennifer Lawrence won bet actress….ha ha..Jennifer Lawrence just eclipsed Ann’s night.

  21. Abby says:

I was a little disappointed that she beat some of the other nominees, but then she fell (in why I really feel was the most beautiful dress of the night) and her speech… And I remember that I love her. Surprised she won for that movie though.

  22. sss says:

that was a fake fall. sorry. the way she covered her face just as she was beginning to fall – it was planned. gotta give her credit – better actress than I thought – her falling was genius

    • Shira says:

      OMG, seriously? WOW.

    • paranormalgirl says:

and so begin the conspiracy theories.

    • pretty says:

your comment is so ridiculous it made me laugh out loud. cute.

    • TG says:

Totally agree with you. I thought her fall looked fake also. It is part of her “awe shucks” routine. I still like her and am glad she won. I think she is young and genuinely a nice person and hopefully she will mature over the years and not lose her edge, but that fall was fake and a lot of her “dumb moments” are fake. It is her way of hanging on to who she is I think, that and Harvey Weinstein has probably been directing her. I just love it that her routine is winning fans where as K-Stew’s has alienated nearly everyone. K-Stew won a bunch of Razzies and J-Law won the Oscar. Okay, so maybe I am immature too!

      • Shira says:

Why, why, why would anyone want to deliberately fall on the ground at a night like this – knowing damn well all they’ll be asked about is that fall and that every fucking newspaper/website/clip will discuss that fall?!?
        Seriously, WTF?!

    • paranormalgirl says:

I watched the gif over and over (it was funny)… she didn’t cover her face before she fell. She more than likely missed a step because she couldn’t SEE the steps thanks to the ridiculous bottom of her gown or stepped on the gown.

  23. ms. hart says:

love her, but maybe time for a new stylist, first the ripped dress and now this? hm…

    • domino says:

Why couldn’t the little African American girl win? That is who I was pulling for. Why dies everything have to be about looks in Hollywood?

      • Jayna says:

You have to be kiddng me. She was like five when hired, no experience, six or seven when she finally filmed that movie. She wasn’t the best actress, anyway, but she did a beautiful job. To be nominated at that age was huge. Most importantly, to give someone that young an Oscar is the worst thing for her. She didn’t even know what the craft of acting was. She was a natural. You don’t need to peak at the age of nine. What is that setting you up for? Disappointment.

      • TG says:

I see what happened to Lindsay Lohan and many other child celebs and I must have been the only one not celebrating that little girl Q. I think she is adorable but talk to me in 15 years and let’s see where she is at. It may be that she has a strong support system and will prosper both mentally and careerwise but I worry about her. Her story of her mom tricking her into auditioning was troubling in and of itself.

      • domino says:

Agree to disagree there aren’t enough African American or minorities winning Oscars, nominated or let alone in films. Unless you are a long time licensed clinical psychologist You can’t comment on the consequences of her receiving an award.

    • d says:

Or who you know or friends with

    • taxi says:

The “ripped dress” wasn’t ripped. Cotillard’s (@ BAFTA, I think) had the same mesh component. JL’s pulled because somebody moved a chair onto it as she was walking from her table, Ball gowns with huge skirts are meant for waltzing in a ballroom, not climbing stairs. It’s hard to lift the front of such a huge skirt so huge in order to climb. Hoop skirts are easier to manoeuver. She walked into the hem & It wasn’t on purpose. I was afraid for a minute that she was hurt.

  24. lily says:

Poor Riva, she is the most deserved winner out of five, but you know Weinstein and his awards buying bullshit. Lawrence is a good actress and will have a bright career ahead, but she shouldn’t have won for a mediocre and overrated performance like SLP. She will have much better performances in the future and that’s when she should rightfully win.

    • Becky says:

      J. Law was pretty good but not Oscar winning good. The role itself wasn’t an Oscar winning role. Although I read that book and the screen adapter and actors did an amazing job and the movie was far superior to the book.

    • wanderlust91 says:

I think it’s funny that she has been demonstrating the opposite of what Jean Dujardin described as an ideal leading actress. Ie: Graceful and classy. I like her but she shouldn’t have won this time around.

  25. Barri says:

Jennifer is a genuinely nice person who does have talent and natural charisma. Everyone who works with her really likes her authenticity. Deserving win for a sincerely great girl.

  26. Jm says:

Like JLaw but not thrilled that she won. She won b/c of Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning and finagling. SO sick of him; he needs to go away.

  27. Lexi says:

I love Jennifer Lawrence because I will always remember her amazing performance in Winter’s Bone.

However, I kind of hoped she wouldn’t win an Oscar this year because the backlash is going to be immense. I can already see people responding to her win with words like “overexposed” and “overly hyped.” I think she’s a talented girl but I hope she has the thick skin to handle the fall out from her win.

I hope I’m wrong though and people will still embrace her. I honestly think she has the talent and charisma to last in Hollywood. She needs to make some steady, smart decisions now.

    • oliveo says:

THIS x 10. You can tell by the way that her peers treat her that Jennifer Lawrence is here to stay. Maybe her role in SLP wasn’t as good as Winter’s Bone, but I think she’s the real deal and that time will tell.

  28. Dani V says:

I thought she handled the fall well too and it was endearing how she addressed it. That was true shock on her face when she won.

I always feel so bad for the losers. Jessica Chastain looked gorgeous tonight. Also Charlize Theron, just so beautiful, tall, and regal. Such bone structure.

  29. Sal says:

Harvey for the win! Must be nice to know you have an Oscar that someone bought for you, with money, bribing, and bullying.

  30. GoodCapon says:

    I like her, she doesn’t annoy me… yet 😉

I hope she and her career won’t burn out because of this.

  31. Tig says:

This is horrible – I don’t know what or where HWeinstein (sp?) knows where all the bones are buried, but he clearly does. This is so awful- J Law even knew she didn’t deserve it. I just hope Jessica C or Naomi W don’t have to wait until they are 70 to get an Oscar. When C waltz won I was afraid the fix was in for J law- I was right! She will be fine- hope this travesty doesn’t create probs for her

    • kibbles says:

Yep, I can’t believe how much power HWeinstein has in Hollywood and over the Oscar committee. I wouldn’t be surprised if decades from now it’s uncovered that he bribed or blackmailed Oscar judges. It is also why so many in Hollywood wear those awful Marchesa gowns with a straight face. It’s all for HWeinstein. Just goes to show how corrupt the world is from politics to even acting. You can bet that any profession that involves very rich people and fame will have a ton of corruption and secrets behind it. Trust that Weinstein will be involved in next year’s Oscars decisions as well.

  32. Jayna says:

There just is no next Meryl, incomperable.

Nicole Kidman for a while was up there as one of the best actresses of my time. She had the delicate bone structure that really she could play all eras, but she flubbed a few roles and the face got wonky for a few years. She’s still a brilliant actress who takes risks, though, and who can do farce, comedy, drama, psycological thriller.

  33. Jayna says:

Did anyone see what Reese Witherspoon said on the red carpet? She sad Naomi Watt’s performance was amazing and she hadn’t been that moved by a performance since Meryl Streep’s role in Out of Africa or Sophie’s Choice, or some movie like that. I think she even wrote Naomi a letter telling her that.

  34. Adrien says:

I’m ok with JLaw, she’s still deserving but I was really rooting for Emmanuelle Riva. Congrats, anyway.

  35. Ms Kay says:

*sigh* I can’t even pretend I am glad she won because I really don’t think it was her “finest” performance to date, she did a much better job in WB. Sorry not so deserved Oscar imo…

Oscars should change that Best Actress category into Oscar for The Most Popular Actress or Oscar for the Best Campaign…

  36. Reese says:

Love the actress, but she didn’t have the best perfomance of the year. That honor belongs to Emmanuelle Riva. She was STUNNING in Amour. Just heartbreakikng. I never saw the big deal about SLP. I knew Jen would win though, she is popular as hell and it never hurts to have Weinstein in your corner. She had a very good performance, but the was behind Riva and Chastain for me 🙁

  37. cupcake says:

Jessica Chastain annoys me for some reason, I cant pin point it.. But I’m happy Jennifer won and as with most others, I agree, the speech made her more likeable, even if I was already a fan. 🙂

  38. FreeSpiritedGirl says:

I was praying for her. I wanted her to win the Oscar. When her name was announced I screamed literally scaring my friend sitting next to me. HAHAHAHA! Poor Jessica Chestain!

  39. Becky says:

Is that a french manicure? Oh no.

  40. stellalovejoydiver says:

Í´m glad she won the Oscar, now she can finish her two franchises, maybe get nominated/win agin and then go away Hilary Swank style.
Harvey is done with her considering the low probability for another win in the next years and IMO she is not choosing her post Oscar projects wisely so far, she def had a say in picking DOR as director for “The Ends of the World”, him seriously? so many other great directors to work with, and she already stars in his next movie.

  41. Ayda says:

She’s not my cup of tea. Amy Adams is a ten times better and brighter actress than Jennifer. It was to early for Jennifer i think.

  42. Maxine says:

I watched Kramer v. Kramer AGAIN last night. There is one Meryl Streep. That is all. . .

  43. cat says:

it seems a bit strange to post without current pictures of the winners AT last night’s Oscars. I could google and find some, no?

  44. Mel says:

The oscars are getting more ridiculous each year, I’m sorry I think Jennifer is a great talent but winning the oscar for SLP just blatantly shows how the show is just a popularity contest being run by the bully that is Weinstein,Argo alo won out of pure pity for affleck! The oscar should have gone to Riva or Chastain, Jennifer I’m sure will be nominated again as I do think she’s great but for SLP is just the biggest joke! I would have given it to her for winter’s bone instead. that said, her speech was quite cute.

    • kibbles says:

+1 I feel like I’m repeating myself, but there seems to be a lot of people in agreement with your statement. Jennifer Lawrence is refreshing and sweet. She’s the girl everyone likes because of her personality and that is why she’s not getting even more hate for winning this Oscar. I think Weinstein took advantage of Lawrence’s popularity and likability to really push for an Oscar for her. He wanted to see a repeat of what he did for a young Gwyneth Paltrow in 1999. It’s why so many women wear Marchesa in Hollywood because working with Weinstein puts actresses on the fast track to winning a lot of accolades. If a lot of us feel that this win was unfair, imagine what the other nominees for best actress must feel. Of course they can’t show their disappointment or whine that it is unfair, but you know they feel the same as us.

      • Pee says:

@kibbles the comparison to gwyneth is ridiculous. I didnt want JLaw to win either but she is no gwyneth at all.

    • FassDaActor says:

I agree with everything you said. It’s such a joke now.

    • Jamie says:

Have to disagree especially about Argo, no other film deserved that Best Picture Oscar more. Ben Affleck was robbed of the Best Director nomination, any other film winning Best Picture would have been a travesty. It was a hell of a film.

  45. Chelsea's handler says:

This is what Ethan Hawke meant when he spoke about mediocre actors winning Oscars.

    • mel says:

+1 Well said. Jennifer Lawrence now stands at the same level than Al freaking Pacino. My God.

    • taxi says:

He could just as well have meant G Paltrow, Hers was a sympathy win because her producer father had just died. Judy Dench got best supporting actress for less than 90 seconds on screen!

Sandra Bullock in “Blind Side”? I like her lots but I didn’t see a broad range of dramatic skill in that role. She played a very nice & good woman, which is what nearly everyone thinks she is in real life.

  46. DetRiotGirl says:

I seriously can’t believe SLP got so many awards/noms this season. It was a totally average romcom, IMO! Nothing Oscar worthy about it! Maybe I can see the praise for Bradley Cooper, MAYBE. But, for JLaw? No.

I felt like she was over acting for the entire movie. Honestly, I found her performance entirely grating to watch. I guess I’m in the minority on this one, but I just cannot comprehend what everyone else saw here that was so great.

I think JLaw is a very pretty girl, and I’ve seen her give good performances in other movies. I just can’t get behind all this praise for what, for me, was a mediocre, forgettable movie like SLP.

    • Lexie says:

i watched SLP without knowing it was nominated for so many oscars (i live under a rock, i know) and really enjoyed it. afterwards, when i found out it was nominated for, like, everything, i was a bit confused. i mean, i really liked the movie (and both bradley and jennifer in it) but it’s not oscar material.

    • Shira says:

SLP got robbed at the Oscars actually. It may have been a romcom for you, but it was life changing for me and many other people (and I don’t have mental illness, you can only imagine how those who do feel).
If it weren’t for Jennifer’s win they would’ve walked with nothing after being nominated for 8 categories, which would’ve been absurd because they’ve won so many (rightly so) throughout the season.

      • Emma says:

Really? I thought it was rife with cliches and stereotypes. I did think Bradley was excellent in it though.

    • Jamie says:

Actually, it was NOT a rom com. It was a film about mental illness, with a SIDE story about a romance. That was NOT the main plot of the film.

      • Shira says:

Thank you! The romance was there in the last 10 minutes of the film, whatever they had before was just… connection.

      • DetRiotGirl says:

Let me clarify a few things here. Perhaps one of the reasons that I didn’t enjoy JLaws performance was that I actually know several people who suffer from mental illness. One of my best friends from childhood actually lost her husband in a car crash and went through a situation not unlike JLaws situation in the movie.

To me, Bradley had a much better handle on what mental illness actually looks like. I could believe his performance. But, JLaw just seemed like someone going through the motions, albeit very loudly. I’ve seen what her character should have been up close and personal, and to me none of that was there in her performance.

I don’t want anyone here to think I missed the mental illness aspect of the story. Of course, acting is subjective. But, to me, the whole thing was so cliche and overwrought that it just came off like the love child of About A Boy and Strictly Ballroom. Oddly enough, I loved both of those movies though and found this one to be underwhelming.

But, hey, it’s all a matter of personal taste. If the movie hadn’t been nominated for a million awards, I wouldn’t even be talking about it. It wasn’t a terrible movie or totally unwatchable. I just didn’t think it was special or worthy of an Oscar.

  47. I honestly cried with joy whwn she won. Yeah, I’m a a superfan and she just seemed SO shocked and happy. I can’t wait to see what other roles she chooses in the future!

    Loved her dress too 🙂

  48. TheOriginalVctoria says:

In sorry but I can’t co-sign her win. I don’t understand what the hype is about for this girl. Watts was spectacular. Wallis was my favorite this year but Watts really moved me and I though she or Q should have won.

    • Pop! says:

I agree. She just doesn’t do it for me, i don’t think she’s as talented as everyone says. And i literally just saw someone tell someone else they ‘didn’t know what good acting was’ if they didn’t appreciate her acting and think it’s top tier.

  49. lucy2 says:

I felt so bad for her when she fell, but wow, she recovered perfectly and handled it with total grace and humor.
I thought she was very good in SLP, though I don’t know if I’d say Best Actress Oscar good, but regardless, she’s a very likable, talented, and quick witted girl. Hollywood needs more of that.

  50. mel says:

This was a total joke of a show and category. Jennifer Lawrence is over hyped and overrated. Sadly, her acting ability cannot keep up with her hype like many other “it girls” in the past. The good thing is that all of them disappeared so there is hope.

  51. I Choose Me says:

I really liked SLP. Bradley Cooper’s performance in that movie was great and his chemistry with Jennifer was fantastic but while I think Jennifer is enormously talented that performance in particular was not worthy of an Oscar. I’m not mad she won because she’s just so likable but I really would have liked Naomi Watts to get her dues.

  52. taxi says:

Naomi should have won for “The Painted Veil” a few years ago, with Edward Norton, but few people saw it & it wasn’t nominated for anything.

  53. Jamie says:

So glad Jennifer won, I saw Silver Linings Playbook and it was definitely worthy of all the nominations. I was worried she wouldn’t get it, so glad she did. Well deserved. Jessica Chastain never impresses me, I think SHE’S overrated.

  54. Diana says:

I’m sorry but this was not good news to me. I really hoped Jessica would win and I don’t think Jennifer’s performance was that great, she did not deserved that award and I’m inclined to believed this has HW stench all over it. It was a freaking romcom! I know everyone is gonna jump my throat but I just can’t deny my opinion about it. I think she’s an awsome gal and a good actress but she has time to improve and that Oscar could have wait. So disappointed Jessica didn’t catch a break.

  55. Jamie says:

It’s actually NOT a rom com, the romance was a SIDE story. The film was a film about mental illness, bipolar disorder in particular. The romance was secondary.

  56. Elena says:

I’ve been in love with Jennifer for the past two years so, naturally, I’m very happy and proud!
And, the moment I saw her fall, I was a bit shocked but it also kind of felt right. I mean- it’s her, lol! It’s just so natural she would fall, then pick her self up and go get that award! Good for her!

  57. Alana Fajina says:

I screamed like a lil girl when I heard her name called! I really wanted her to win. I didn’t see the movie, but I just like her and think she’s super sweet- they don’t give Oscars for bein a doll do they? LOL! When she fell, I just thought it was a combination of shock and appreciation and it was just one of those moments where she sort of collapsed with emotion. And I loved her all the more for it! Her. DDL. And Michelle Obama made the Oscars for me!

  58. Pop! says:

My boyfriend’s introduction to Jennifer Lawrence on Oscar night:
    Bf: who’s Jennifer Lawrence?
Me: you knowJennifer Lawrence. You saw her as Mystique in xmen.
    Bf: the monotone girl?
Me: yes. We also saw the trailer for Silver Linings Playbook, what she’s up for.I
Bf: i thought that trailer was a joke! That movie looked terrible! It’s up for awards?!
Me: yes. People are saying good things about it.
Bf: she only won because she’s an ‘it’ girl right now. She isn’t a great actress,i didn’t even remember her face!
Me: yeah. She’s also in a ‘young adult’ film series.
Bf: what?! well, she fell. It’s online.
    Me: is there a video?
Bf: yeah, but she more stumbles than falls. Really it isn’t so bad.

  59. Mary says:

Remember last week when that guy was saying girls like Anne Hathaway were ‘forgetable’ or whatever he said? I think Jennifer Lawrence is like that. I neither like or dislike her, I just don’t care less either way. That said, I really think they need to have guys waiting at the bottom of the stairs to help escort ladies up. At the 2011 Emmys when Margo Martindale won (for Justified), she was pretty much crawling up the stairs. Not sure if it was because of her dress or the shoes or whatever but I felt really sorry for her. Maybe they could go with the whole armed forces theme and bring in some Marines or something to help the ladies?

    • Bries says:

      I agree.
If anything, Anne has done some good work in the past and the credit was due for her.
Jennifer Lawrences Oscar win was too soon I think. Infact it was shocking actually. This was not her best role. I hate the comparassion between her and Kristen Stewert, just because they are the same age and K-stew has done some stuff that puts Jennifer higher then her in some way. It doesn’t She is also immature, just like Kristen.
I only like Daniel Radcliffe from that generation of actors. Jennifer and Kristen doesn’t impress me.

  60. Kaut says:

I like her but really? An Oscar?
I wish Naomi Watts got it or Emunanelle Riveria.
Jennifer only got it out of popularity. Like Argo did. Life of Pi should have won Best Picture.
This Oscar show was one of the worst in my opinion. Even worse then Anne Hatheway and James Franco hosting.
That Shatner skit and the ‘boobies’ songs was not really funny.

  61. Kelly says:

Really love Jennifer Lawrence but wanted Chastain to win.

  62. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Talk about some negative Nancy’s up in here!! I guess I am one of the happy ones – thought she was great in SLP (and Winter’s Bone) and I really like the image she puts out..I think a lot of young women feel like they could be friends with her, seems very down to earth..have to say, so refreshing!

  63. Jill says:

There were better actresses that should have won that Oscar. These awards are bullshhhhh!

  64. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Who the hell cares if she tripped? ‘Poor thing’, my shiny metal ass.

  65. serena says:

Meh..I don’t feel this win. I like her but I don’t think she’s Oscar material.
    Also her dress is horrible.

  66. Luxe says:

Too soon? It’s her second nomination. Maybe the problem is not having a younger category where a 9/22 yr old doesn’t compete with those in their 40s-80s. Audrey Hepburn won for her FIRST starring role, and Roman Holiday while great, is not what defines her career. Same for the two films Bette Davis won for. It’s how they managed and leveraged the accolades. JLaw’s overall demeanor leads me to believe that BA won’t go to her head. Boost her confidence? Of course, but that’s kind of the point. Jennifer will get her choice of roles and money, but she doesn’t strike me as one who will obnoxiously latch on to the title (like Anne or Gwyneth).

And I can’t stand Weinstein. Like loathe him. I love love loved The Artist and was delighted by the throwback feel (I live for Turner Classic Movies) and I was horrified by his efforts with that movie. I was happy for everyone, but that was gross.

Overall, I do find Hollywood and “awards season” to be a joke. Nothing says “bubble” like it. It seems like there’s an award every week for two months. I also don’t see how a movie that comes out on Christmas should even qualify for a February show. I also hate when movies that are SO OBVIOUSLY gunning for Oscars win. Or if an actor morphs their appearance, they are somehow more deserving. Why does a movie have to be “epic” for it to count? If you go back to when the awards first started, the films weren’t considered “epics.” They were good performances and great scripts. I love when someone wins for a movie that has comedic elements or isn’t political in nature b/c it disrupts the system.

And I really think the Meryl comparisons aren’t fair just like I think comparing every ball player to Michael Jordan isn’t fair. It’s the wrong standard to have. All actors should be trying to achieve their own body of work that exudes quality. Plus remember, Meryl did Death Becomes Her and Jordan played for the Wizards 😀

    Sorry for the rant 😀

  67. kiki says:

I think Ms. Lawrence is a charming and talented actress. I do not believe her performance was the most Oscar-worthy.Think Riva should have won that one. Hate that she fell. She handled it very well though.

  68. Wiggz says:

I think Shirly Temple or Tatum O’Neil, one of them is the youngest for best actress. Not 100% sure though.

  69. s says:

I can see her being the next Meryl Streep. Meryl was nominated for an Oscar for the 2nd movie she ever did and won for her 5th. In terms of timeline, that’s really close to how J-Law is doing now.

  70. Juicy Lucy says:

The only reason JL won is because she had Harvey to bribe and bully a win for her. Her role was nothing special and one that actresses such as Reese Witherspoon or Kate Winslet could have played in their sleep. Her performance in Winter’s Bone was stronger. Yes, she is popular thanks to the Hunger Games and X-Men frachise but the real test of her “star power” will come with the release of Selena-where she-not Brad will get top billing. If the film tanks, she could get the blame.
