You guys know Grumpy Cat. She’s the latest meme, having hit the big time in September when her owners posted a photo of her adorable permanently frowny face on Reddit. She’s an 11 month old mixed breed named Tardar Sauce who suffers from feline dwarfism, which is the reason she always looks like she’s mad. Her health is fine, though, and her owners say she is a “healthy and happy cat.” She’s also an incredibly famous one. There’s a Grumpy Cat website, a twitter account, merchandise and plenty of amusing sayings accompanying her furry scowl.
Grumpy Cat flew first class to SXSW, where she graced the Mashable tent for a little while as fans lined up around the block to see her. There were about 600 people waiting to pet this sweet little cat, and Mashable has a video with interviews with some of them. People were really stoked to see her, and one of her human fans was none other than Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries. Ian posted the photo about to Twitter, and it’s just so amazing I had to share. If you can’t get enough of lovely Ian and that little feline, there are more photos here.
CNN and Yahoo! OMG have declared Grumpy Cat “the star” of SXSW and “the biggest celebrity” there. She’s certainly the cutest one, and I have to say that Ian, as unconventionally beautiful as he is, pales in comparison.
In case you’re worried about Tardar’s health and if she’s holding up well while she’s being pawed by scores of adoring humans, her co-owner Bryan Bundesen says we shouldn’t be concerned. “A lot of people think we are exploiting the cat, we limit her exposure greatly. She is only here for an hour at a time. Ninety-nine percent of the time she is just a regular cat. She is not front of the camera at all times, she is a normal house cat and we love her.” As do so many other people. Awww.
Tardar has scored a plumb endorsement deal. She’ll be starring in a new commercial for Friskies.

a while back when his show first started taping here a caller called into the radio station I listen to and wanted to meet Ian (take him on a date or something) he told the station that he was engaged and his fiancee wouldn’t approve. shortly after he started dating Nina. I get not wanting to go out with a listener, cause that’s creepy anyway but I think he should have been honest. I have not liked him since, think he’s a tool..

YES!! I am so happy you covered this! I saw it last night (my friends and I have a grumpy cat obsession) and I noticed this guy’s instagram profile pic was of him holding a cat.

I’m not a fan of his but my son and I are watching Lost so he’s been on my radar. I think he has the kind of skin that blushes/flushes easily (which I love, Prince Harry is another example). And his dark lashes with his light eyes might just look like guyliner?
Not sure why I feel compelled to defend him…my son voted him “character I care about the least” on Lost.

I find Ian to be on the same level of creepy as BCoop. With him, I can understand that each of his features are attractive, but for some reason all of them together make him look like an evil Rob Lowe. He looks like a sleazy guy, that tries to score with under aged girls and eventually pimps them out once he’s got them to fall for him. Like BCoop, he looks like the villain in a Lifetime movie.
see, I know a lot of people feel that way. I don’t get it, I think bcoop and this guy are sooo hot. esp ian. i think people just aren’t used to light light blue eyes and it trips them out. i love dark hair and light eyes on guys, so ian can eat crackers in my bed anytime.
In my case I don’t think it’s about not being used to guys with light eyes. I actually tend to like the contrast of dark hair and light eyes on a man or woman, though I do prefer brown eyes above all other colors . It’s more the look in their eyes/eye shape than the color itself.

I am shocked and appalled by the Somerhalder hate. Sure, the cat is cuter, but that’s because it’s the cutest freakin’ cat ever.
I mean, I don’t want to sound like a 13 year old fangirl (because I’m a 38 year old fangirl) but Somerhalder is an amazingly kind and generous person. He tirelessly promotes animal welfare causes and rescues, environmental protection and started a foundation to support the clean up from the gulf oil spill. Trust me, his Twitter is actually excruciatingly boring for how nice and grateful he is all the time. He’s like the anti-Damon in real life.

Yeah, I don’t get the venom, he was a little sarcastic/evasive about going out with a stalker-y fan, so what? Agree his twitter is boring/nothing but charitable goodness. I am such a Damon fan;I could not stand him on Lost but he has completely won me around on VD. I do think he looks like Rob Lowe, I find him way too pretty but his is just too charming to resist as Damon. He and Nina are adorable together off and on the show.
And sure, the cat is cute in photos but if I woke up in the middle of the night with that face looking at me I might be creeped out! (ducks from cat lovers). I’d take Ian’s smirk any day of the week.

I’ll answer this one. I used to be a Damon fan, but I had to stop following IS on Twitter. I think he is very well-intentioned, which is nice, but he makes assertions that are so poorly educated, ill-supported and just “out there” in support of his causes that it drives me crazy. I’d have to take the time to archive his tweets and give you specifics, which I don’t have the time to do, but I remember there were a number of statements he made about the Keystone Pipeline, for example, that were just flat-out wrong.
I don’t think he does it on purpose, but he knows he has oodles of fans who will do and follow whatever he says mindlessly, so he should be more careful. When you speak in big, sweeping generalities, and tar and feather huge groups of people without any attention to nuance, you undercut the validity of your arguments and your position (at least to me).
Fair point; he is pretty, but a little dumb. I confess to not really reading all those good-intentioned posts, so I believe you if you say you spotted some that weren’t accurate. And I agree with the take-care-with-your-mindless-followers principle.
My point was only that he isn’t sleazy; if anything, he’s annoyingly hipster political hippie. If that can be a thing. also he has lots of cats.
