Another ‘American Pie’ movie – in theaters?

Now that Tara Reid is finally in rehab, the last thing on most of our minds is another American Pie movie.  After the first three films, which followed the group of friends from senior year of high school all the way through Jim and Michelle’s wedding, there was a series of three direct-to-DVD movies, including that work of cinematic glory, “American Pie: Band Camp.”  But it seems that the producers at Universal think that it would be a great idea to release a new film in theaters which follows the original trilogy.

Universal has decided to abandon those direct-to-video “American Pie” spin-off films in favour of making a third sequel to the original film – one that might possibly pick up on the whereabouts of now-married Jim and Michelle (Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan). Like the other three, it’ll be released theatrically.

The success of the direct-to-video spin-off films (“American Pie : Band Camp”, “American Pie : Naked Mile” and “American Pie : Beta House” – all featuring Eugene Levy) has Uni thinking it might be time to return the series to its roots – alas, it’s back to Jim, Michelle, Finch, Stifler (though personally I doubt Seann William Scott will return) and whoever else can be roped back into the fruity follow-up.

“Fruity followup” seems about right.  The charm of the original movies was that it was about high schoolers exploring, however crudely, their sexuality.  But now with Jim and Michelle (of the flute story fame) married, one can only imagine that the jokes will center around pregnancy and/or a failing marriage, both of which are either not funny or have been explored by every other comedy.

What will be interesting is to see who agrees to appear in the film.  It seems like anyone in the original cast (except Eugene Levy, who has a degree in these types of films) would be committing career suicide by signing on.  It’s better to be off the Hollywood map than be featured in American Pie 4: Twins! – although Tara Reid might see otherwise.

If this film does end up getting made it is sure to feature, once again, Eugene Levy.  And as much as I hate to admit it, the guy gets props for sticking to a character.  This will be the seventh film in which he’s played Mr. Levenstein and you’ve got to hand it to him – he plays “awkward dad” really well.

Tara Reid, Shannon ELizabeth, Natasha Lyonne don’t have film careers anymore. I thought Jason Biggs didn’t anymore either, until he popped up in a couple of recent movies. Chris Klein too. Some of these actors may stand to benefit from a new AP movie. If for nothing else than a paycheck.

I remember when this movie first came out everyone thought it was hilarious. Now there’s movies like “Superbad” and AP seems, like, so lame.

I hope they abandone the idea

    Never seen one.
    Are they any good?

I read an interview with Eugene Levy who said they pay really well and it allows him to do films he’s proud to be a part of.
