Anderson Cooper may replace Matt Lauer: would you watch Coop on ‘Today’?

Matt Lauer

Matt Lauer continues his descent into self-perpetuated villainy at the hands of the “Today” audience for his (allegedly prominent) role in the ousting of Ann Curry. Do you think Ann has her popcorn readied for all of the recent developments in this mess? I hope she does. Most recently, Matt appealed to the Daily Beast about how “Today” is “a family,” and it wasn’t his fault that Ann had to leave the show. CB further reported that Matt’s contract is about to expire, and that Willie Geist is the leading contender to replace him. But Matt isn’t done trying to change the general public’s mind on this matter, and now he’s got a new cover story with NY Mag that spans eight pages yet has nothing new except for more whining from Matt about how he feels so misunderstood. What’s next? Deadline says that someone new — Anderson Cooper — has been approached to replace Matt. Everyone dislikes Matt, and everyone loves the Coop. Let’s do this:

Anderson Cooper

Embattled Today anchor Matt Lauer, already the focus of blistering criticism for the ouster of co-anchor Ann Curry and the ratings slide at NBC‘s morning show, has long been rumored to be on the chopping block – despite his $25 million contract and recent efforts aimed at rehabilitating his image. Here’s the latest wrinkle: I hear NBC toppers recently reached out to CNN’s Anderson Cooper to replace Lauer on the show before the end of the year. After their initial approach to Cooper, I hear NBC reached out to Lauer to get his blessing about the changeover. But I heard they got pushback from the Today veteran, who contacted Cooper to express his disapproval. I also hear that call caught Cooper by surprise, as he had assumed Lauer had been brought on board before NBC began making overtures. Cooper has been one of the leading faces at CNN, though I hear his contract has an out, and he previously was able to do his syndicated daytime talk show in addition to his CNN program.

Cooper’s is just the latest name to be rumored to replace Lauer, who inked a long-term contract last year. Ryan Seacrest, current Today co-host Willie Geist and Meet The Press host David Gregory have all been reportedly considered by NBC. Lauer, meanwhile, has been tied to rumors (along with Cooper, Brian Williams and Dan Patrick) to take over for Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek when the longtime game show host decides to retire.

[From Deadline]

Indeed, the buzz over what Matt Lauer will do when (not if) he ends up leaving “Today” is that he’ll take over hosting “Jeopardy!” Who knows when this will happen, but I think it’s a good fit because no one really cares about the personality of a trivia game host, and Matt would essentially be working alone on the show as far as being “in charge” goes. No co-hosts, just contestants, and the program probably shoots a week’s worth of episodes at a time like most game shows tend to do. That would free up a lot of time for Matt to attend to other duties, which will probably include a memoir (that no one will buy) about how everyone hates him.

Enough about Matt Lauer though … how about this silver fox for a “Today” show co-anchor?

Loathe Matt, loveee anderson. I would watch again. would just wait for Anderson to get the giggles. He is a great journalist, plus he seems to be so down to earth. No star diva attitude from Anderson.

  2. Turtle Power says:

    Matt Lauer doing Jeopardy.

    LOL

    Kharma will be satisfied.

    • bea says:

Noooooooo! Not HIM on Jeopardy! I love that show and if I have to deal with his smugness I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch it anymore.

      • Rachel says:

I agree. Bedhead’s comment that no one cares about a game show host’s personality is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Alex Trebek is a beloved tv icon. I’ve been watching Jeopardy my entire life. Some of my best childhood memories are of watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy with my grandpap. If Matt Lauer took over, I’d be forced to stop watching because that man is a talking d***.

      • Layale says:

I agree with Rachel. Alex is beloved. Matt is loathed.

      • EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I agree with you it DOES matter what their personality on those shows is like! I know they get pushed by the wayside, along with soaps and daytime talk shows etc. that most people tend to forget about, but… shows like Jeopardy, The Price is Right, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, personality definitely matters…just look at the hosting changes over the years from those last two! People do freaking care about it lol…and Matt would turn off most of those remaining years-long viewers of Jeopardy, I would imagine.

  3. Darcy says:

    Yes please

  4. Hannah says:

I think Cooper is way overrated as a journalist. But it is a morning tv show so no real journalism is required anyway.

I would hate for Matt to host Jeopardy. I do care who hosts quiz shows and I don’t want it to be a douchebag.

    • mystified says:

Agree with everything you say. I would watch provided he doesn’t bring Kathy Griffin with him.

    • Jenny says:

What makes you say Cooper is overrated? Just curious because I can think of a number of assignments over the years where his coverage was EXCELLENT and I don’t think that the perception of him is that he is the foremost in his field. I don’t really see overrated.

      • CL says:

He was so great in New Orleans after Katrina. I think he has the right mix to do morning news – can do both serious and silly.

Matt needs to GTFO before his reputation sinks any further.

At least we don’t have to worry about Anderson sleeping with his co-stars (pretty sure Al doesn’t swing that way).

    • Steph says:

Alex can be quite smug in his own right.

  5. Jane says:

If all the dreadful stories about the NBC suits are true, I would be careful if I was Anderson. CNN is no treasure, that is for sure, but NBC does not treat it’s talent well.

First, they, along with Lauer kicked Ann Curry to the curb poorly, with all the rumors being leaked and making her look horrid. Now they are trying to do the same to Lauer since the ratings tanked after Curry, though Lauer deserves it after throwing Ann under the bus. They also had Conan, then when Leno wanted back in, they kicked Conan out. Now, who are they trying to move out–Leno. I would watch my back with that crowd.

    • lisa2 says:

      Great points.

besides Matt got his job in a very underhanded way; and all that sneaky talk with Katie (don’t like her either). yeah lots of shady shady going on in that place. And it didn’t start with Ann. Even going back to the Late Night Wars. NBC is getting the backlash they rightly deserve.

I don’t want Anderson on NBC though. I like him a lot, and liked his show. I think they are doing this for attention, I think Willie will be the most likely next host.

    • T.C. says:

Would never work for those dirtbags at NBC. Anderson should stay at CNN.

  6. Aiobhan says:

I may consider watching if Anderson is on. I rarely watch the news in the morning because I can get easily distracted when I am trying to exercise so I don’t watch anything at all. I think Anyway, I think Anderson ( or anyone for that matter) would be 1000x better than Matt Lauer.

And I would mind if Mat replaced Alex. They need to end Jeopardy if ALex is retiring or find someone that does not come off like a smug jerk.

  7. Apples says:

Anderson would a great choice. But, I agree, he should get some cushy severance package put into his contract for protection.

  8. valleymiss says:

I like Anderson, Willie Geist, Lester Holt (I think he’s on Dateline? Or 20/20 which is on ABC), and Brian Williams. I would be ok watching any of them. But, I do think Savannah needs to go. Just clean house and keep Al and Natalie (but Natalie stays at the news desk). Savannah’s very smart and accomplished, but dull as dishwater. I’d love Hoda Kotb, to be honest, but that would break up Hoda and Kathie Lee, and those 2 are way too much fun to watch in the am.

Hiring Ryan Seacrest would obliterate any integrity NBC has. They might as well hire Ashton Kutcher or Simon Cowell to host Today.

    • Garvels says:

I could see Hoda and Coop as a team…it would certainly be entertaining. Savannah is really boring.

      • valleymiss says:

I thought about Anderson and Hoda, but unfortunately (and it pains me to say this), I’m not sure if Hoda at this point could successfully transition back into serious journalism. She’s been having BoozeDay Tuesday and Wednesday Winesday for a while now, and her lovelife has been the butt of Kathie Lee’s jokes for a while now. Would viewers take her seriously again? I’m not sure. I love Hoda to death though. (And it would give me a certain thrill to see a gay man and an Egyptian-American hosting a national news show. I would love the diversity.)

  9. Miss so and so says:

LOVE Anderson! I love when he gets the giggles! Darling

  10. jaye says:

I love the Silver Fox, but I don’t think he should take the job, what with all the underhanded doings at NBC. And as far has Ryan Seacrest being considered…please God…NO.

  11. Sylvia says:

Mah Boo the Silver Fox would turn that show around in a heartbeat. GMA is alright but it’s only up because people (like me) have been boycotting a-hole Matt Lauer. This would fix everything.

Who woulda thought that Lauer would go out more hated than Bryant Gumbel? I guess the fact they’ve stayed friends all these years points to how alike they really are.

  12. JudyK says:

I would NEVER watch Anderson. He’s a nice guy, but he’s not developed as an adult person.

Did he grow up in a cave…never tried coffee until last year, doesn’t like to drink anything hot, eats the same thing everyday, squishes his nose and makes faces like a little kid anytime he tries a new food on his show…he’s a baby and a bore.

    • jwoolman says:

None of the things you mention have anything to do with being a grownup. Some people are more sensitive to foods, taste and temperature than you, and not everybody drinks coffee. I don’t just try foods because a food bully tries to make me do it, either. And I was forced to try coffee as a teenager, didn’t like it, and never got into the habit. I get my caffeine when needed from Excedrin or non-diet coca-cola…. 🙂 Well, actually I found a caffeine-loaded tea I like and just picked up some Clif bars with 50mg caffeine in them! But getting enough sleep works better.

    • Lucinda says:

I’m 41 and I’ve never tried coffee because I can’t stand the smell. Trying new foods is almost a phobia for me because of texture issues and digestive issues. Guess I’m not a grown-up either. lol My kids will be thrilled to hear that.

  13. lucy2 says:

I like Anderson so much I might even start watching again.
Ryan Seacrest should be a giant NO. I don’t know anyone who likes him, and if they want to shake things up and reclaim the top spot, it’s not going to be with a guy who annoys most people.

Did you guys see the story about Matt talking to ABC about doing a talk show with Katie, and then turning around and signing his bigger NBC contract? Sounded like it he used ABC for leverage. I know a lot of people do that, but it’s just one more jerky move in a long list for him.

  14. Nibbi says:

anderson = a kajillion times more likeable, i’d say.

on the other hand, i’d rather see him continue to develop his “real” journalism cred instead of get involved with that soap-opera goofball morning show fluff

  15. valleymiss says:

Also need to add: Today needs to get back to real news. No more Kardashians, no more Sandusky apologists, etc. Save all the light and fluffy for the 4th hour and bring Today back to normal journalism. Honey Boo Boo and Kim and Kourtney can hang with Hoda and Kathie Lee.

  16. Seagulls says:

    Love Willie Geist.

  17. evie says:

I love Anderson and Willie Geist and think either of them would make great hosts. Of the two, I’d like to see Willie get the job because I think it’s his time to shine. But really, I’d be happy to watch either one!

  18. Loulou says:

Anyone or thing but Matt Lauer. A robot. A talking chimp…

  19. Kate says:

I love Anderson Cooper, but I think he’s a little too famous for this role. I think you have to sort of be able to blend into a team on a morning show, and Anderson is Anderson (and he’s gorgeous and I love him). And I agree with someone upthread who said they wouldn’t want Anderson bringing along Kathy Griffin for frequent visits.

I love Willie Geist’s sense of humor. It’s so sharp. He’s pretty damn handsome, too.

But my vote goes to Lester Holt. He seems like such a plain old NICE DUDE. I think he’d be a balm for the show after Matt leaves.

  20. CleaK says:

I think Anderson Cooper would be an excellent get for them. I’d watch him, mostly for his little girl giggle.

However, I loathe the idea of Matt on Jeopardy. Half the fun of that show is Alex and sweet but also subtly snarky he is. Matt couldn’t pull that off. He’d just be arrogant and make me want to stab him with a fork.

  21. bea says:

AC would be perfect for Today’s lightweight drivel. He lost his “serious journalist” cred with his talk show.

The most troubling part of this whole story is Matt being the new host of Jeopardy! How about a woman as the host for a change of pace? Surely there’s a smarter one than him available.

NBC sounds like it’s full of intrigue and backstabbing…going home to the Hamptons to golf and count his millions would be a nice change of pace for Matt.

Honestly, who watches Today? If you need actual news, you’d go somewhere else. I think their day is done….

    • Bijlee says:

Cooper’s lost his serious journalism cred for a long time now, even before the talk show. A ridiculist IS NOT news. He’s a pretty face and personality now. He should go to Today. he’s more likeable than matt and wants to do a talk show.

I hate CNN because they isn’t any good news reporting on there anymore. They lost me ever since that Will I Am hologram during the 2008 elections. They went full retard with that. I go to BBC, NPR, Al Jazeera (I’m surprised how credible they are), or once in a while MSNBC for my news. But I loathe CNN and Fox. The latter I don’t even consider news lol.

      • jwoolman says:

Al Jazeera has always had a good reputation. That’s why US officials give them interviews, they know they’ll get a fair though tough deal. But their credibility, not only in the Middle East, is also why the US military keeps “oops” killing their reporters, such as when the press was collected into that one hotel in Baghdad after the US occupied it. That was the time even the Faux News guy refused to spout the party line – the guy back in the US was trying to get the guy on the scene to say that unusual noises and lights were coming from the roof and that’s why the military “oops” aimed at it (which was the official military excuse), but the guy in Baghdad was so shocked that he kept telling the truth: the only unusual sound or light was when the hotel was hit by the US military and the Al Jazeera crew was killed. Their people were targeted in Afghanistan also, can’t remember the details. US tv coverage of US military activities elsewhere is actually heavily self-censored by all the networks partly because of conflict of interest (military industry connections) but also because they are convinced they won’t get the stories at all if they go too far. You have to pay attention to what’s being reported elsewhere to get the full picture. One colleague in Spain was telling us about the continuous coverage from a Spanish tv station he saw of that “event” in front of the same hotel where a US Marine started toppling a statue of Saddaam Hussein (it ended up on magazine covers, maybe Time?). We just saw tight shots of the crowd. Spanish viewers saw a mostly empty square, with a truck bringing in the 20 guys who formed the front of the “crowd” and were cheering and who also showed up at other “events”. The US military finally had to announce “free rations” to bring in more Iraqis, who looked kind of confused and weren’t cheering, because they were just waiting for the food and not really very interested in knocking over statues… That’s why a Marine had to do it. I guess there were limits on what the trucked-in guys were willing to do on camera.

  22. Cam S says:

I think the two would practically be interchangeable imo. Would be a smart move if Matt leaves.
I don’t see why Matt gets such hate. It’s not like people even liked Curry when she was on. That’s when the rating started slipping (when Meredith left and Curry took her spot). I’d have done the same thing if my new co-host wasn’t cutting it. Jeez. The big mistake was putting Savannah whats her name to replace Curry. Shoulda hired outside talent.

    • Kate says:

Did you read the NY Mag article? It addresses that, and how Matt was anti-Ann from the get-go. Research they did into their dynamic showed that audiences disliked Ann and Matt together, but, surprisingly, they found MATT the one who became more aloof and unlikable during their segments together. They also mentioned how, when Ann first got promoted, she kept asking to take Matt out to lunch so they could talk about the future, and he kept putting it off. Which is hilarious because when he did damage control a while ago, he mentioned how HE took HER out to lunch when the shit was going down, like he was some big hero.

I really don’t get it when people act like Ann was horrendous on the show. She was a part of the show for YEARS, did cooking and celebrity segments, dressed up crazy for Halloween with the rest of them…the whole nine yards. There was no “Ann Curry is horrible” feeling out there then, to my knowledge. I think she tried hard with Matt, he wasn’t having it, and it showed.

  23. Frenzy says:

Please not on Jeopardy! It’s my fave show since I was a kid and I’m saying no to Matt! ! Today needs to stop featuring all these reality starlets and fans might come back! Viewers want real news and please Matt take Giada with you! Ugh!

  24. Lizzie K says:

I think Anderson would be PERFECT for Today! This would be an inspired move, IMO.

ETA: I don’t think either Willie Geist or David Gregory have enough likability factor for morning TV, and I DETEST Ryan Seacrest for foisting the Kardashians on the world. I want Coop!

  25. Thiajoka says:

No Lauer anywhere. Can’t he just fade off into the sunset?

  26. MonicaQ says:

Love AC but I watch BBC world news in the morning because it’s a half hour and I’m lazy and don’t like to get up. Despite all the fluff he does, I still consider him a serious journalist–I think he got hashed at a bit too much for being “so serious” so he tried to lighten up up a bit. I don’t know what they talk about on these morning shows anymore–the last time I remember watching them with any regularity was when I was little and the Heaven’s Gate cult offed themselves.

    • Ranunculus says:

He did real hardcore journalism in his early days. He should go back to that every now and then. I think he is too good for the Today Show.

  27. Garvels says:

I like Coop..he would be a great choice…….they should also replace Savannah as well. She is a big fat reminder of Ann Curry and Savannh lacks charisma. They should start fresh with a new team.

  28. Kali says:

I also don’t get all the hate for Matt Lauer….I am not saying he shouldn’t take some blame but the Executive Producer has the final decision over who stays and who goes. Plus as much as I love Ann Curry, I am beginning to think she and Al Roker are still stirring the shit about her departure. They are good friends and to be honest Al Roker wants the anchor job. Al needs to go.

I love Anderson and think he would do a good job but the Today Show needs to be reworked. The chemistry is gone unfortunately.

  29. Dimebox says:

I want Anderson to stick with CNN where he has more serious reporting to mix in to his hour. I thought I would watch his talkshow but it was just too lightweight. But love him. Agree with all who beg to please not foist Lauer on Jeopardy viewers. There’s a vast divide between gently snarky Trebek and sneering Lauer…ugh.

  30. truthful says:

    I’d watch for Coop!!

  31. erika says:

huh….. Grey Fox vs. Chia Pet…..tough call.

  32. marky mark says:

I would rather watch Anderson than Seacrest. At least Anderson can do hard news.
I red the NY mag article and they are some pieces of work over there. Whoever works there might want to watch it…

  33. DianeP says:

Anderson is great, but I’m not sure the Today Show would be the right step for him to take. I don’t think they’d treat him right. Matt has to go, though. He’s insufferable.

  34. Bored suburbanhousewife says:

I’d watch Willie. He is funny and self effacing. I was sorry I had to stop watching him on MSBC because of the loathsome self absorbed Mica.

  35. Helvetica says:

    I am all for this.

Matt Lauer comes off as such a jerk.

He also looks really silly in that first picture. Like he’s trying hard to be “cool” and it comes across as ridiculous.

  36. Agnes says:

I wouldn’t watch it, morning shows aren’t my thing, but I’d cheer on the Silver Fox from the sidelines.

  37. DianeP says:

I don’t watch Jeopardy, but most game shows need a likeable host to be successful, and Matt just wouldn’t cut it THERE!

  38. Onyx XV says:

I would, but it would make me sad. Anderson is way too good for that morning schmaltz.

  39. e.non says:

transfer meeka brezinski and joe scarborough to today; and get a new crew for the msnbc program… hell, give those 3 hrs in the morning to chris hayes.

  40. RobN says:

People love Anderson soooo much that his own talk show was canceled. Doesn’t really matter how much people at the network like somebody if he doesn’t bring in viewers and I’m not sure why the same stay at home moms and retirees who didn’t watch his own show will decide they can’t wait to see him on Today.

I also think you’re wrong when you say that nobody cares about the personality of a game show host. Hosting those shows is all about personality.

    • Lee says:

Totally agree….I would much rather see Anderson than Matt, but Anderson already has had trouble with keeping a large viewship….that’s what sells the advertising that keeps the shows on.

  41. KellyinSeattle says:

Anderson Cooper seems so sweet; Matt like an SOB. Period.

  42. Amanda says:

I have never even considered this possibility, but OMG YES, that would be so awesome!

  43. valleymiss says:

I just looked up Ryan Seacrest’s background. He dropped out of journalism school when he was 19 to come to LA. He didn’t even finish college? Lol No wonder Matt was pissed when those “Seacrest on Today” rumors started.

    • RobN says:

I can’t see how interviewing the person voted off last night’s reality show or pretending you like grumpy cat requires much of a journalism background.

  44. Carl Z says:

God, I hate Matt Lauer. Anderson Cooper is the perfect fit for that silly show

  45. Kcorrie says:

    Anderson Cooper for $1000, Matt.

  46. Jess says:

I hate Matt and stopped watching the Today Show after they ousted Ann. But I would watch again for the Coop. If they hire Ryan S it is just an act of desperation and they would become a total joke.
