Michael Jordan married his second wife, 34 year-old model Yvette Prieto

You may recall that basketball legend Michael Jordan had one of the most expensive divorces of all time. When Jordan divorced his first wife, Juanita, in 2006, his settlement of $168 million was the largest celebrity divorce settlement on record at that time. (Mel Gibson has since beat that and billionaires like Rupert Murdoch and Bernie Ecclestone have had larger settlements.) So that’s why it’s surprising to me that Jordan tied the knot again, but he reportedly learned his lesson and got an ironclad prenup to protect his $650 million fortune just in case. Jordan, 50, married his girlfriend of five years, 34 year-old model Yvette Prieto, in Palm Beach, Florida on Saturday. There were over 300 guests at the wedding including Tiger Woods, Patrick Ewing, Spike Lee, and Scottie Pippen. Guests were entertained by an 18 piece band as well as performances by Usher, Robin Thicke, K’Jon, and DJ MC Lyte. Here’s more:

Introducing, Mr. and Mrs. Jordan! Us Weekly got all the details on Michael Jordan’s over-the-top wedding to Yvette Prieto in Palm Beach, Fla. on Saturday, Apr. 27.

The couple of five years tied the knot at Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, his rep confirms to Us. Over 300 guests celebrated with the newlyweds at a reception held at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Fla., which was planned by Sharon Sacks Productions.

In a gorgeous wedding photo, the basketball legend, 50, and the Cuban-American model, 34, have big smiles on their faces while sharing their first dance. The bride wore a French silk voile corseted J’Aton Couture gown with handmade silk lace and Swarovski crystals.

The bride and groom selected white roses, peonies and tulips with accents of purple for their floral arrangements by Mark’s Garden. After the ceremony, the flowers were donated to the Jupiter Medical Center.

Guests were treated to star-studded entertainment by Usher, Robin Thicke, K’Jon, DJ MC Lyte and the 18-piece band The Source. The couple also went all out with their cake. Edda’s Cake Designs created an all-white, seven-layer, white rum cake decorated with sugar crystals and the newlyweds’ monogram.

This is the second marriage for the former Chicago Bulls player. He was previously married to Juanita Vanoy for 17 years before they split in 2006. The former spouses share three children: sons Jeffrey Michael, 24, and Marcus James, 22, and daughter Jasmine, 19.

I love weddings and that sounds like an awesome party! US Weekly has a picture of the bride and groom’s first dance and they look so happy together. They’re a cute couple and while he’s a little older than she is, it’s not a huge age difference. Congratulations to Michael and Yvette!

Here are some photos of the wedding arrivals, including Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Spike Lee and the bridesmaids. There are also aerial photos of the reception tents. Gah I would have loved to have been at that wedding.

Congrats? I don’t have much faith in the marriages of celebrities, but I do have a soft spot for Jordan – I was in Hugh school when he was basically god with the Bulls.

    • roxy750 says:

Ditto! Couldn’t agree with you more, he is a HUGE legend. HUGE

      • Blenheim says:

I have a one track mind, I saw this thread and all I could think of is “yeah girl, ride that huge..”, and hen I saw your comment and kind of read it the wrong way….

    • Agnes says:

I meant “high school”. Stupid spellcheck. 🙂

  2. Hakura says:

They do look very happy in their pics. & they’ve already been in a committed relationship for 5 years, as opposed to just jumping in too soon. I’m happy for them, & wish them luck! =)

  3. aims says:

    Good luck!

I have a feeling that his first wife earned every penny she got from her divorce settlement.

    • Toot says:

She did because Jordan was a big cheating dog. Supposedly Tiger learned from him. Hopefully he’s stopped.

  4. Sade says:

Well, maybe age has tamed his wandering penis. He may not have had a mega scandal but Tiger Woods had nothing on Jordan in that department. His ex deserved every penny and the new wife better hide the viagra and insist on condoms

  5. Kim says:

Congrats Yvette you waited to be a wife rather than a baby momma

  6. coolio says:

I didnt know only celebrities get divorced…

  7. kaligula says:

My first thought was: It’s nice of him to give her the dignity of a wedding, and the official status of being his wife. To men like him, especially at this point in his life, surely there are few advantages in tying the knot. But meanwhile to women of course, this ritual and the title is of utmost importance. He must really want to keep her.

Yikes, does this sound super-jaded? Anyway, congrats to them and I wish them a very happy union….

    • prettytarheelfan says:

To me it sounds not necessarily jaded, but more like you’re supporting the stereotype of women being obsessed with weddings and marriage. I may be spending too much time over at Jez. So, [insert standard feminist argument here], [insert examples of women who do not support this theory here], and [finish with a bit of snark on Jordan’s wandering peen here].
🙂 I’m feeling lazy this morning.

      • kaligula says:

I guess that’s what I meant. Former die-hard feminist here. Living to the ripe old age that I have has changed me. Especially the places I’ve lived. The reality of human society is that “old-fashioned” gender roles are still very very much at play in the world. There are maybe 3 or 4 cities in the world where one can live and be free of the dominance of such conditioning and paradigms. But still at the end of the day, even in those places, right around the corner are masses of people who gleefully accept such paradigms. It’s a losing battle in my opinion. Too biologically rooted to ever really change, unless the human species has a major quantum leap evolutionarily speaking, some time in the future, which is possible.

    • Merritt says:

I don’t find it jaded, but I find it full of gender stereotypes.

People really need to stop with the “women just want to be wives and mothers” crap.

      • kaligula says:

I didn’t say that women just want to be wives and mothers. What I said was something else, and I was getting at the fact that women want status and power, just like men. And by virtue of her marrying this man, she will be afforded immense status and power, relative to what most humans on this earth will experience within their lifetimes. As far as gender stereotypes, they are alive and well in the world I see around me. Doesn’t mean I support them.

      • videli says:

Then get outside of the world that surrounds you.

      • MCraw says:

Why such a stank answer Videli? Kaligula stating that this is very much part of OUR world and telling her to get out?

People need to learn reading comprehension before lashing out at posters. Seriously.

Anyways, Kaligula, I agree with your original point, that for women IN THAT WORLD of high society, status and power, being married is important. And he gave her the dignity to make her his wife, as opposed to a baby mama, as someone said above. I know I couldn’t do it with a man whose history w women is what his is and rumors to this day of his cheating. That title sure means something to her…

      • videli says:

What are you on? What exactly is your world? Define it. Is your world high-society (that was funny, by the way). If your world sucks for women, change it or get out.

  8. fabgrrl says:

34 and 50 isn’t too bad. Congrats, I guess? Michael Jordan was the shiznit when I was a teen. Some kids I knew in high school caddied for him at a Celebrity Golf thingie, and they said he was really, really nice and friendly. But he just seems so sleazy when it comes to women, at least he used to.

  9. floretta50 says:

For some reason most successful black men don’t marry women that resembles their mother. Most human beings especially men are attracted to women that have facial features and body structures they believe are good child bearers of off-springs that resembles them and have their traits. Look around, most of these successful black males marry lighter skinned women with strait, not kinky hair, now how does that compute? They don’t have those traits, strange phenomenon. Decades from the plantation but still!

  10. fabgrrl says:

I get a kick out of seeing these giant basketball guys standing next to normal sized people.

    • Chrissy says:

Me too!! A normal height guy must have felt like a midget at this wedding!

    • Agnes says:

That’s what I was thinking too! Is Scottie Pippen’s date really tiny (wife? girlfriend? i know nothing about his peronal life)? or is he that huge?

  11. Murphy says:

Yeah that must have been a fabulous party

  12. MsAubra says:

Well this black woman is happy with her life and how things are going for her so I won’t throw shade on their union by having the “woe is me” pity party these pairings seem to bring until he says disparaging things about black women, I can’t be bothered!

Congrats to the happy couple! 🙂

    • Kath says:

It’s such a minefield. On the one hand, race is completely irrelevant (and according to geneticists – non-existent). So yay for inter-racial couples!

On the other hand, I can totally understand why it pisses some black women off that so many successful black men have (usually blonde, usually model-type) white girlfriends to the extent that it’s become a cliche. I must admit that when I saw Brian Gumbel’s second wife, I gave a little sigh.

I’m also ashamed to say that I give a little cheer when the tables are reversed and the hot white guy has a smokin’ hot black girlfriend. Is that wrong?

I suppose it’s the same sort of thing as the much older guy-younger girl thing, which is also undergoing a bit of a reversal in recent years.

      • Aura says:

I don’t understand that either. I guess I happen to be one of a rare thought that the mentality can go either way. Personally, it’s very telling of one’s insecurity

  13. Christina says:

”They’re a cute couple and while he’s a little older than she is, it’s not a huge age difference”

A 16 year old age difference is just a ‘little older’??? I would say it’s pretty substantial. If the genders were reversed, I doubt anyone would say a 50 year old woman was only a ‘little older’ than a 34 year old man.

    • Lyn says:

Yeah, I’m a 34-year-old woman cringing at the idea that a 50-year-old man is only “a little older” than I am. I understand that age differences are more troubling when the younger partner is very young, but give me a break.

  14. KellyinSeattle says:

I was court side and got to see him really in action…it was amazing….however, sports stars can get on my nerves with their egos, esp. Tiger.

  15. Tiffany says:

Mario Lemieux was at the wedding as well, I did not realize they were friends. That is a bit odd.

  16. crazycatlady says:

I guarantee you there was either no prenup, or a super low-ball one on her behalf. Because I worked for one of MJ’s branded entities, I have friends who have worked and played with him, and was around him a bunch of times. And he is about as faithful as a hungry dog with an empty bowl. I wish wife #2 lots of luck, or very large blinders!

  17. crtb says:

I read on another website that he is knwn for his natsy temper. I had never read that previously. I want to call her a golddigger but she put her time in, so she deserves the ring.

  18. dana says:

This second wife is actually really pretty.

When MJ won his first championship, Bob Costas interviewed Juanita Jordan on the assumption that she was MJ’s mother, not wife.

And, I remember MJ’s mistress suing him and I was surprised how fugly she was too.

I think MJ is just one of those testosterone guys who would sleep with woman, even if she’s fairly unattractive.

  19. Kate says:

This wont last. If he didnt get a prenup then he’s in love. If he did then he knows what’s up.
