Madonna went out of her way to snub Gwyneth Paltrow at the Met Gala

Ha! I love how celebrities are totally shading Gwyneth Paltrow these days. If you missed my earlier post on Chloe Sevigny’s world-class shade on Goop, go here. Chloe was asked for her thoughts on Gwyneth’s petulant hissy fit about how “un-fun” the Met Gala was this year. And now Us Weekly’s print edition has an excellent story about WHY Gwyneth had such an awful time this year. It involves Madonna! Madonna and Gwyneth used to be friends until they had a falling out at some point a few years ago. Now they barely speak to each other, and Madonna goes out of her way to be a bitch to Goop.

The Material Girl is a Mean Girl! An insider tells Hot Stuff that Madonna went out of her way to make ex-friend Gwyneth Paltrow miserable at the May 6 Met Gala in NYC. Madonna gave Gwyneth the cold shoulder, then buddied up to tablemate – and current Paltrow pal – Beyonce.

“She chatted with Beyonce for most of the evening and didn’t even glance at Gwyneth,” says the source. “Everyone talked about it.”

The feud stems back to 2009, when Paltrow got fed up with the rude treatment from her onetime BFF.

“Madonna would sh-t on her, over and over,” says a Paltrow source. Years after Gwyneth dropped her, Madge is still hurt by the snub, says another insider: “She fels Gwyneth abandoned her. Now Madonna will do anything to make her suffer.”

And apparently she did. Days after the fashion bash, Paltrow told interviewers she would never attend again.

“It was so un-fun, I did not enjoy it at all.”

[From Us Weekly, print edition]

I don’t believe that Gwyneth dropped Madonna because Madonna “would sh-t on her over and over.” I mean, I believe Madonna can be an awful person and she always has to be “top dog” in her relationships, but who believes that Gwyneth isn’t perfectly capable of being just as nasty, judgmental and bitchy right back? No, I think they had a falling out over several things, especially Tracy Anderson and that whole situation. Gwyneth pretty much “stole” Tracy from Madonna and that’s the biggest untold gossip story.

But yeah, how funny is it to imagine Madonna spending all of her time with Gwyneth’s new BFF Beyonce? Goop must have been so peeved.

Hilariously, Gwyneth’s Goop-letter this week is her behind-the-scenes of the Met Gala and how she chose that awful pink Valentino, etc. You can read it here.

    WTF is Madonna wearing? Jesus.

    • Monie says:

She is now The Material Granny and needs to put some clothes on. Toned gristle is still gristle. Yuk!

    • jessica says:

      LMAO!!!

    • V4Real says:

In Madonna’s defense that was the outfitt she wore to The Met Gala. The theme was punk so she got it right.

      • Amy says:

        She did indeed!

      • *unf* Joan Jett says:

        +1

still skirt and/or pants would have been nice

      • A~ says:

I completely agree. She was one of the few who actually knew what punk meant. That is because she lived through it.

      • novaraen says:

exactly!! She was one of the only ones that followed the theme.

      • Tara says:

She did 🙂 not that I think it was all that flattering. Conversely, goop looked as punk as a prom queen, but I think she looked great. Actually really like the dress. I think it took a chance and won.

    • lucky says:

The theme was “punk.” There were few celebrities who followed the theme…like Gwyneth (and a ton others who couldn’t bear to be different than their normal, plastic, ordinary selves.)

      • VioletCrumble says:

The theme was “punk to **coutoure**” or something. Most of the people (women?) attending seemed to go for the “coutoure” angle. I was also there during that period, as I’m Madonna’s age. Although I loved the street punk fashion, I could never put it together, so never wore it, or at least only wore single elements. What she is wearing can be called glam punk, and no self-respecting genuine punk would dress this way nowadays. For the true punks, it’s about the philosophy and music, not the clothes. I’m not a fan, but good on her for going the punk option, although a little skirt would have been more appropriate at her age, cuz as good as her bum is, it’s still an old arse which most don’t want to see.

    • Hakura says:

It looks like she fell into Gaga’s closet, & this is what she clawed her way out in. (Too bad she was probably running late, & didn’t have time to change before her red carpet appearance.)

      • Nina W says:

PUHleeze everything in Gaga’s closet is a knock off from Madge not the other way round.

  2. Ron says:

I doubt Madonna went out of her way, she just saw the opportunity and went with it. She would have more in common with Beyoncé anyway. They could have an entire week long conversation about their hatred of pants….

  3. Sirsnarksalot says:

Actually I think GOOP said Madonna stole Tracey from her. Then later Madonna dropped Tracey when scandal about her business dealings reared up. I wish one of these harridans would spill the beans over their (GOOP and Madonna’s) falling out. I bet it’s juicy and I can’t believe Madge hasn’t said anything yet. Maybe she was waiting for the tide to turn against the mighty GOOP…

    • Sisi says:

The fact that madge hasn’t said anything, makes me thimk that the truth might be embarassing for her. If it had been embarrassing for someone else, she would’ve snitched years ago to clear her own reputation over this mess

      • roxanne says:

I think you might be on to something. Madonna might have copped an attitude when Goop married a Brit, too.

    • CL says:

I remember GP making a comment that Madge would keep Tracey (and other people) waiting for hours for her. If I had a friend who was consistently hours late for things, I’d end that “friendship” too.

      • poppy says:

+1 and add to that when their divorce was announced and then goop blabbed about it, trying to be “supportive”
they (goop+madonna) went through a tough break up… to be a fly on the wall for the whole break down…

    • CL says:

      Double post. Oops!

    • Miffy says:

It’s probably just as simple as Madonna needing to be the alpha female in all of her relationships and Goop being the privileged, princess that she was couldn’t stand that kind of treatment.

Neither of them seem BFF material anyways (just ask Winona Ryder)

    • Troof! says:

OMG “harridans” I love you so hard for that! 🙂

    • EnuffSaid says:

I thought the row was over Madge making a move on Chris Martin!!

      • Haha says:

I read this, too! And that all of their mutual friends like Stella McCartney also dropped Madge in support of Gwyneth. Can’t think of a much better reason to end a friendship than someone hitting on your husband. That’s some shady sh*t.

  4. karmasabiatch! says:

Love her or hate her, Goop has 1,000 x’s more class than Madonna. The faux British “accent”, if that is what one calls whatever comes out of Madge’s mouth, is SO affected and tacky. Drives me batty.

Madonna has been a b*tch for the entirety of her long career, why would she stop now? I totally believe this.

    • littlestar says:

Madonna’s fake British accent really bugs me too. I think she thinks it makes her seem sophisticated or something, but to me, it makes her sound ridiculous!

    • Annie says:

Is she still doing that? I thought that phase was over.

And to think that at the beginning lf her career she mocked the English and thought they were too proper and boring.

    • annaloo. says:

Madonna has had me since I first saw her tattered style singing Lucky Star. I am a Wannabe through and through.

      Team Madonna.

      • Right?!? I mean she made wearing lingerie as a public function fashion statement! What’s shocking about this compared to the bras and garter belts that made us all love her?
Also, I don’t imagine Madonna would “go out of her way” to affect many people. I think she’s sleeping quite soundly without Paltrow in her life.

    • Beatriz says:

Madonna is insufferable, but I STILL prefer her over Goop. Madonna is a bitch, but has never pretended to be anything else than that.

    • CM says:

I can’t claim to be huge fans of either woman, but I think Madonna is still angry that she got ‘dumped’. She seems to have relationships that follow a few stages:

Stage 1: She befriends you, if you’re useful to her, or have something she admires/wants.

Stage 2: She tries to exert influence over you; make you constantly validate her. If she succeeds, you’re ‘worthy’ of being in her life.

Stage 3: She cuts you off if fail to do anything/let her do anything in Stage 2

As Gwyneth might say, ‘Good riddance to bad rubbish’.

      • GigiK says:

You are absolutely right on this!
Also, I think I remember an article about how Madonna and her girls would go to dinner and they all had to order the exact thing she did – you know, to be just like her. I think it was either Goop or Rosie O’Donnell that ordered cheese on their salad and that ended that friendship.

    • novaraen says:

that’s funny because I think Goop has ZERO class.

    • khaveman says:

Isn’t Madonna from Detroit? Why doesn’t she embrace that background instead of putting on a fake accent? I’m no huge fan of GP, but I have to say Madonna, your days of wearing a showgirl/dancer outfit like that to a gala are lonnnng over. It’s just trashy.

    • Denise says:

She took elocution lessons before she ever moved to the UK, but because she wound up living there people think it’s an affected Brit posh accent. It’ definitely not British, but it is annoying on any continent.

      • Nemesis says:

I never thought it sounded British. It sounded to me like she got rid of any type of reginal accent that she may have had. Everything she says is so enunciated now.

      • Nina W says:

Oh it was faux Brit and annoying and hoity-toity but she’s dialed it down since her divorce. It’s still annoying but not as badly affected as it was for a while there.

  5. Truthful says:

    Madonna 10
    Droopy Goopy 0

    LOL!!

    • Leila says:

say what you say about Madonna but she’s smart and she’s not overexposed after all these years, she keeps her personnal life private somehow and she doesn’t talk that much to the media outlets and drop the names of her famous friends just because.

    • I mean she made wearing lingerie as a public function fashion statement! What’s shocking about this compared to the bras and garter belts that made us all love her?
Also, I don’t imagine Madonna would “go out of her way” to affect many people. I think she’s sleeping quite soundly without Paltrow in her life.

    • Nina W says:

I sure don’t hear Madge complaining about the Met Gala and she clearly won the fashion-off vs Goop, so yeah I sign on for the win goes to Madge!

  6. Serenity now says:

    Vacuous

  7. Serenity now says:

I didn’t read the headline closely- I actually thought it said “Madonna went out of her way to STAB Gwyneth”

    • Boodiba says:

I just felt slightly guilty for my literal LOL over that comment.

    • Truthful says:

      LOL!

    • V4Real says:

LOL! Only because it’s not true but you made it sound funny.

    • Baskingshark says:

Heh. I wish. I think the Met Gala needs to be more like The Hunger Games.

Actually, I think everything to do with celebrities needs to be more like The Hunger Games.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

        Are you sure it isn’t?

      • Hakura says:

@Baskingshark – I’m w/Jo. I’d say figuratively (&/or in regards of reputation) there’s some form of ‘fighting to the death’ going on. xD And we do all get to sit back & enjoy the carnage from afar.

  8. Talie says:

It’s interesting that for all the talk that Gwyneth is so loved and always the popular girl in the room, the Met Gala seemed to really shoot down that theory.

    • V4Real says:

Haha the popular girl became the outcast. It’s like when Blohan turned the tables on “McAdams in Mean Girls.”

Maybe Gywn is not only hated by the public but other celebs as well. It also seems as if Bey didn’t have her back by telling Madonna to play nice.

      • Miffy says:

To be fair even Beyonce doesn’t have the kind of clout to tell Madonna to shove it. Only Elton John holds that title.

Besides I always got the vibe that GP is betting more out of her friendship with Bey and Jay Z than they are out of her. You never hear Jay talking about how he was hanging out with his best bud Gwynny but she just can’t help herself. It’s all a big networking game, ‘friendship’ is just a business term it seems.

      • bluhare says:

Miffy, I’m with you. If Beyoncé is Gwyneth’s BFF, why did she spend all evening talking to Madonna and ignoring Gwyneth? I wouldn’t do that to my best friend.

  9. Vickyb says:

Just the headline of this made me smile. Madonna forever! Gwyneth is just… meeeeeeh!

And, for what it’s worth, I really thought that Madonna was one of the only ones that nailed it at the Met Ball. At least what’s she wearing is punk, she takes risks and she beats her own drum. Far better than Gwyneth ‘it’s so punk to not be punk. Punk is for peasants’ Paltrow.

Madonna gets for the way she is – opinionated, demanding, controlling, but at least she has *always* owned it. Unlike Paltrow, who I think is probably all those things and more, who hides her bitch behind sugary gloss. I know who I have more respect for.

  10. Jayna says:

Gwyneth attended Madonna’s MDNA tour last year in the UK, as did Stella McCartney and others in their circle. Madonna had a party at her Mayfair townhome afterwards and I would assume Gwyneth was invited. So as of last year they were on friendly enough terms, so I wouldn’t believe she snubbed her if not for that comment Gwyneth made in the interview dissing those who dressed punk at the gala, which would be a direct diss at Madonna. So maybe back on bad terms again.

    • Adrien says:

Yeah but Guy Ritchie was also in attendance. It does not mean anything.

    • Nina W says:

I agree it means nothing, celebs will always rub shoulders with each other even if they hate each other like poison.

  11. janie says:

First time i’ve seen Madonna in the news in a long time…. Just sayin’

    • Nina W says:

How did you miss her travesty of a cheer leading outfit at, what was it, the Super Bowl?

  12. c'est la vie says:

Gywneth’s pink dress is still all shades of horrible.

Say what you want about Madonna, she stuck to the theme of the evening (I thought well) and would never be caught dead wearing that dress.

  13. Thiajoka says:

I think they deserve each other.

  14. Dinah says:

FFS. Two bigger a-holes I’ve never seen.

  15. BooBooLaRue says:

At this point, i loathe all of them: Goop, “Material Granny”, Tracy “Man”derson, and BEY-once…put them out on an ice floe and let them have at it.

  16. ncboudicca says:

In that first photo, Madge has some hard implants in the right side of her face, or something else going on…her face is stretched tighter than a gnat’s ass over a rain barrel. I wish she’d stop with the plastic surgery.

  17. NerdMomma says:

Blech. They’re both so insufferable, I really do wish they’d become the best of friends again. They could have a judgy talk show together and talk in their faux British accents together and tell us all how to mother our children and whatnot. It would be excellent comedy.

  18. Ann says:

I don’t know why the media keeps pushing the cat fight agenda. Friendships sometimes have an expiration date. No biggie.

  19. Dawn says:

Oh who cares! The Mets Gala was hardly AList anyway.

  20. Barrett says:

I love Madonna and the gloves to hide her granny veiny hands. She is not fooling anyone!

  21. Gossip Garl says:

Do ya’ll think Madge knew GOOP would be wearing PINK @the MET?I BET SHE DID>>MADGE RULEZ.

  22. AB says:

God, I think I like Madonna’s outfit more than Goop’s.

    • Miffy says:

Given the option of the two I’d wear Madge’s. I don’t even have the legs for it but I’d take it over that pink-and-windscreen monstrosity.

  23. Kate says:

I thought Stella McCartney was part of the “falling out.” I may be mixing my “celebrities dumping their buddies” stories, but a number of years ago I thought Stella got into it with Madonna because Madonna was either hunting or wearing fur/pelts or both (in her Guy Ritchie-I’m-so-British stage). I thought Gwyneth sided with Stella.

  24. bowers says:

Celebs: they’re just like high school.

  25. RHONYC says:

i find this hilarious only because THREE years before Beyoncé became, well BEYON-SAAAAY, i´ll never forget Destiny´s Child 1st Grammys where they won and during their performance the camera shot to Madonna (who was wearing her ´Mrs. Richie´ shirt) was looking down a her nails like ´how boring, i need a manicure´ delivering massive shade. 🙁

    she´s a f*cking trip i tell ya. 🙄

  26. anneesezz says:

Maybe Madonna doesn’t get to be pretend British anymore since divorcing Guy Ritchie so she is being shunned by Gwyneth, Queen of the Anglophiles.

    • moon says:

Nah Gwyneth isn’t an anglophile. She’s made plenty of disparaging remarks about british customs – although that isn’t because they were british, but because she’s Gwyneth.

      • Emily says:

Goopy is a Goopphile. No culture can come up to the glory that is Her Goopiness in her own teeny tiny mind.

  27. Lisa says:

If I had to choose who to be stuck on a desert island with, I’d choose neither, but Team Madonna in this case.

    • Blenheim says:

That’s right. Because Goop wouldn’t let you eat the coconuts because they are not certified organic.

  28. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

I can’t believe Madonna – who seemed so confident in the eighties – turned into this.

  29. lisa says:

all of these people are horrible in a different way, i cant pick a team

once tracey said that she used to have a very famous client who was always late or expected her to drop her other clients without notice and act unprofessionally and so she had to drop them. i always assumed she was talking about madge.

  30. Jm says:

I remember after Gwynnie won her Oscar. She hosted SNL and made fun of Sharon Stone and her “creepy husband”. Sharon didn’t like it and said that Goop was living in “rarified air” at the moment but, when she came down to earth like the rest of us, she wouldn’t be so smug.

Could it be finally, at long last, happening? Fingers crossed!

  31. moon says:

What is this, high school for 50 year olds?

This, and the Real Housewives are making me realise we will never evolve beyond high school drama.

    • cynicalsmirk says:

I’d go out of my way to snub them both, anywhere, anytime….there can’t possibly be 2 more entitled, pretentious snots in the world, can there? Since I’m unlikely to actually ever run into either one, I’ll snub them the only way I can. By not spending a dime on a magazine, book, cleanse, cd etc. that they produce or have any association with. The same goes for the Kardashians.

      • Nina W says:

I’m with you, Cynicalsmirk, none of those ladies get any of my cash or patronage, ever. I’ve never paid for any of their music, or movies, or clothes and I never will. Oh and whatever they endorse, I don’t want.

  32. poppy says:

now goop’s “too old to be punk” comment makes sense to me.
i think goopster might be lost in her own PR frenzy. to post that whole “pink ball gown = punk” article on goop moments after she swore she didn’t dress punk; i bet her stylist isn’t pleased she completely contradicted her and their arrangement just to shade madonna.
goop is so passive-aggressive. like saying sandra bullock is old, the whole winona drama, drunk girls are ridiculous… goop’s always ragging on someone despite her claims to being firmly attached to the bosom of sisterhood. i hope they make that ryan murphy/girl group film with goop, beyonce, cameron, and reese since she previously dissed reese, implying she only does rom-coms for $$$$ and that rom-coms suck.
she’ll put out a thinly veiled goop letter re: fake southern charm, power trippers and dui?

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Dang. That’s a lot of people to snub.

    • VioletCrumble says:

As I said above, I’m Madge’s age, and I’m still a punk. I will die punk. You’re NEVER too old to be punk, but some are too self-centred, vain, grasping, mercenary, bigoted, obsequious, ignorant, uneducated, shallow, pretentious and pusillanimous to EVER be punk.

      • Nina W says:

Goop is an ageist bitch but the wheel of time will crush her in the end. And me, of course.

  33. Dedrie says:

Gwyneth to crowd, “Ahem, for your own health and safety; avoid the Scot-Nazi Punk butter-face grannie…’

  34. Emily says:

Madonna mattered hugely, and Madonna still matters. Goopy never mattered, nor will she ever. Madonna wouldn’t put up with being unhappy in marriage, and got herself a hot boy toy she keeps in his place. Goopy is with some guy she pretends is a genius artiste who can do no wrong, and likes to pretend she can give us peons marriage advice.

When it comes down to it: Madonna’s the real deal, obnoxious as she often is. Goop is a poseur, and never has been anything but. That is why people hate Goop, not for her lifestyle.

Btw: Madonna was always a slightly edgy party girl with way more male friends than female friends. All this one-upsmanship cool kid stuff is really not her.

    • Loira says:

I loved that Madonna was not trying to advice anyone… Well, until she hooked with P and that Anderson woman.

  35. KellyinSeattle says:

“Everyone was talking about it”…they really do act like junior highers. Waiting to see what Madge does as she gets older; Social Security benefits take effect, kids grow up, she has grandkids…this whole show has been around forever but is still full-steam ahead.

    • Trashaddict says:

Moon and Kelly, you have really nailed it. Some people will never leave their junior high school selves behind. It’s really sad when you see people stuck in that mode.

  36. MAC says:

This is not news. As soon as GOOP had that quote out about the Met. it was clear she did not get the attention she wanted/deserved. Madonna got the press for sticking with the theme. GOOP is a child.

  37. jamee draper says:

I am sorry but I cannot help but LOVE Madonna.I grew up listening to her music and every pop singer today is ripping her off or trying to be her.But there’s only one Madge Beyotches.Yes she is crazy and catty and rude, but she is a DIVA.She is supposed to wear crazy outfits and dress up with her ass out at galas. And BTW,just because she is 50- something doesn’t mean she should act like an old lady.50 year old men like George Clooney are enjoying themselves and partying and dating people half their age,why can’t she.She embraced the gay community 30 years ago when no one would or wanted to.She is living her life and raising her kids alone and not hurting anybody.Good for her she is awesome. So what if she dropped Goop, who can stand her anyway?

  38. skuddles says:

Yes Madge, this is what you’ve been reduced to – leaking stories about how you “snubbed” GOOP at some gala in the hopes of attracting some PR.

They’re both a couple of pretentious twats, I can’t imagine why they’re not besties anymore.

  39. Amelia says:

No one dislikes Goopy more than I, but Madonna is wretched. From her fake British accent, to her cougar dating, to her disastrous fashion sense, she is revolting.

And to the both of them…Fifth Grade called…they want their behavior back.

    • Kath says:

Yep. I’m not Goop’s fan by a long shot, but Madonna is just repulsive. Does she have ANY remaining friends/family, or has she fallen out with all of them by now?

    • VioletCrumble says:

Yes, Amelia. As a teacher in a primary (elementary) school, I’ve lost count of the number of times we’ve needed to mediate Years 5 and 6 girls, and younger, in their bitchy squabbles. These two harpies must have written the text book on bitches and banshees and how to tip the bucket…

  40. Str8Shooter says:

I saw Madonna in concert back in ’08 and I have to say, she was all gristle and granny-looking. And when she came out to ‘sing’ Borderline (Lord knows she can not hit those high notes any more) she had on this BabyJane outfit complete with pancake makeup. I had nightmares for weeks!

She is now, and always has been, a total See Ya Next Tuesday.

That being said, who the Hell could stand the unrelenting pretense that is Goop?

  41. dread pirate cuervo says:

Clearly they’re no longer friends bc Madonna says “pass-ta” in her fake British accent instead of “pah-sta” & that assault on Gwyneth’s eardrums gives her the vapors.

  42. Gin Brosell says:

who cares what material trash thinks, says or does? she got where she is by being crude & disgusting. all the money in the world can’t but her class, & Gwyneth will always have it & madonna never will

    • Nina W says:

Lol, sorry but neither lady shows much class here. Not that anyone cares about nobodies and their social pretensions anymore but Gwynnie doesn’t have anything to get all high and mighty about in her family any more than Madge does.

  43. Gin Brosell says:

Who cares what material trash thinks, says or does? She got where she is by being crude & disgusting. All the money in the world can’t but her class, & Gwyneth will always have it whereas madonna never will.

  44. Hrrw says:

Many friendships just fizzle out eventually.

  45. Blenheim says:

Madonna’s mouth turns downwards even when she’s smiling.

  46. Blue Angel says:

You’re all wrong. Madonna flipped out when Gwyneth signed up to portray Marlene Dietrich in a biography. That’s Madonna’s idol for decades. Madonna wanted the role. Check Gwyneth’s timeline with the Dietrich project. It coincides with the tiff.
