Jonah Hill on his critics: ‘Whatever, man. Scorsese thinks I’m awesome’

For whatever reason, no one around here covered Jonah Hill’s Rolling Stone interview several weeks back. Jonah was interviewed for a cover story including James Franco, Seth Rogen and Danny McBride (it was to promote This Is the End). Seth, Danny and even James played along with the interviewer, joking around and answering questions about farting, masturbating and comedy in general. Jonah did not. Jonah is a super Serious Actor now that he has an Oscar nomination. Jonah is not going to talk about farting. Jonah takes himself seriously, because a Serious Actor is Serious. You can read the full Rolling Stone piece online here – a few choice quotes from the piece:

Jonah on what kind of farter he is: “I’m not answering that dumb question! I’m not that kind of person! Being in a funny movie doesn’t make me have to answer dumb questions. It has nothing to do with who I am.”

How Jonah sees himself: “I’ve done one of the biggest challenges you can do in Hollywood, which is transition from being a comedic actor to being a serious actor, and I’m really prideful of that. I could have made a billion dollars doing every big comedy of the last 10 years and didn’t, in order to form a whole other life for myself. Now I have fulfillment doing both.”

[From Rolling Stone]

There’s a lot more BS in there, but it’s an old story and you’ve probably already heard it before. Part of the problem was the weird fake-stoner way the piece was written. But part of the problem was that Jonah is simply pretty douchey and full of himself these days. And now we have further evidence – behold, Jonah just spoke to Bullett for an interview, and while the published Bullett piece is flattering, the editors wanted to pass along some interesting, exclusive quotes to Salon – Jonah on his new reputation as a super-serious, self-involved d-bag, and Jonah says that if your name isn’t Martin Scorsese, he really doesn’t care what you have to say. Some highlights:

The roles he passed on: “All I ever wanted to be was, like, regarded,” he says. “A genuine fear of mine was that I was going to be known as ‘The Guy from Superbad’ for the rest of my life.” Around that time, director Todd Phillips approached him to play “any one of the three main parts in The Hangover,” says Hill, who declined the offer, along with another to play Shia LaBeouf ’s sidekick in Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. “They were both really big decisions, and ones that most people didn’t understand,” he says. “I knew I could be a dramatic actor, but I also knew I couldn’t go from Superbad to Schindler’s List.”

On criticism: “You can dis me all you want on a blog, or write whatever you want in this magazine and I’ll just be like, ‘Whatever, man. Scorsese thinks I’m awesome.’ [Laughs.] He hired me and didn’t fire me, so I can kind of not care now. It really did give me personal assurance that I’m doing the right thing and that I’m talented in certain ways because he’s so important to me.”

His relationship status: A bros-before-hoes outlook on love suits Hill, who, though currently single, would eventually like to settle down and have kids. Fame, however, has hindered his ability to meet women. “The idea of celebrity is incredibly seductive and it brings out the evil in people,” says Hill, who used to only date girls with whom he’d gone to high school “because I knew they liked me before I was successful.” He’s confessed to past threesomes and to bedding a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, but he admits, “It’s not sustainable in a way that will give you any real gratification. It won’t have kids with you because it’s just an idea.”

Jonah knows super-famous people: “When Brad [Pitt] and Angie [Jolie] came to my birthday party last year, I think that was pretty shocking to a lot of people because that was at a small bar, but my birthday party this year was at my house and, um, some of the guys from The Wolf of Wall Street came over. My friends weren’t like, ‘Oh my gosh! A famous person’s here.’ More than that, it was the actors there who were like, ‘Man, it’s so awesome how close you are with all these people who don’t give a f–k that you’re in movies or that anyone else is in movies.’ Because no one cared that Leo [DiCaprio] was there.”

[From Salon & Bullett]

The quote about Scorsese, is d-baggy and ridiculous. But the Brangelina quote just made me sad. It made me feel like Jonah was the outcast kid who got bullied and instead of taking that past and turning it into something positive, he just grew into an adult douchebag with a chip on his shoulder. Yeah, it’s nice that Brad Pitt and Angelina came to his birthday party. But why brag about it to Salon? Why put it out there in the public sphere?

  1. Greenie says:

This guy really needs to get over himself.

    • MsGoblin says:

Yep, he’s a legend in his own mind.

    • Liv says:

I think some of the Apatow films are really funny, but there are always these fart or shit jokes – which I don’t find funny at all. Is this an american thing?

Anyway, I don’t get why the fart question surprises Hill then. It’s part of the films, why not of the interview about the film?

Of course it’s a stupid question, but there’s a huge difference in acting like he did or answering the question politely without really saying something about the topic.

      • Greenie says:

I agree. I find that type of humour to be vulgar and childish and incredibly unfunny. I haven’t been amused by fart jokes since I was in Grade 3.

    • Janna says:

He is a little guy, like the same height as Tom Cruze. He needs to get little, about another 30 pounds should do it. I like his as a comedian, great timing. I did not like him in money ball, bad timing. He needs to stick with comedy. That will make him just as much, if not more, money. Like his hair in the first picture.

  2. lisa2 says:

I actually like Jonah. I think his is very talented and smart. I liked his interviews when he was promoting Moneyball. But I don’t know what happened after that. I hope he is not letting fame get in his head. The people that really have lasting careers are the ones that stay grounded.

    • Lb says:

I think he has low self esteem and it manifests itself in ways that he feels he needs to brag all the time or behave certain ways to be taken seriously.

      • Greenie says:

That would explain why he trash-talked January Jones for not hanging off him like a groupie.

      • bluhare says:

Greenie, but that January Jones slam was epic.

That being said he’s the classic example of the fat kid who’s gone on to bigger things. Unfortunately, he’s not being so kind while doing it.

      • paranormalgirl says:

Wasn’t it Zack Galifianakis that slammed January Jones when she was rude to him?

      • Faye says:

This is not meant as criticism of you, but I get really tired of comments like Jonah Hill’s being dismissed as a result of low self-esteem. I had very low self-esteem as a child and teen, and it manifested itself as me constantly beating up on myself and thinking I should be doing better, NOT making comments about how awesome I was and how much cool people loved me. To paraphrase Freud, sometimes a douche is just a douche.

      • paranormalgirl says:

low self-esteem can manifest itself in many many ways.

    • Naye in VA says:

I really dont mind this interview. I don’t know what everyone expects of him. he “stupid question” thing was a bit over the top, but what he says about Scorsese…If I had people talking crap about me in my profession I’d point to the most recognizable example of my talent too. And tell them to eat it. His low self-esteem comes to the front sometimes like the the Brangelina thing, but he sounds like somebody who it trying to get a grip on loving himself, not just becuase other people love him. I don’t see douche, just a lack of self-awareness.

      • KayMary says:

Naye, maybe you should read the Rolling Stone piece. There are a couple of quotes there about the Apatow beginnings that are at the very least super ungreatful. Just plain douchey. Remember Apatow and Rogen didnt just cast him, overweight funny looking unknown, they brought him into the creative side. They even recommended him onwards to Sacha Baron Cohen and got him a writing gig on Bruno.

He needs to learn from Rogen, who when asked on Reddit to comment on this ingratitude had nothing but nice things to say. His only slight was that he thinks James Franco will win an oscar first, which in Jonahs douchey brain must be a major burn.

Someone needs to look Jonah in the eye and tell him that dating Dustin Hoffmans daughter did not turn him into Dustin Hoffman. Oh and remind him of the brief film career of another ungreatful “thespian” named Katherine Heigl.

  3. Itsjustblanche. says:

He’s so going to get fat again.

    • jc126 says:

He already is fat again, unfortunately.
I’ve never liked Jonah Hill. He just has never seemed likable, in my opinion. That being said, I’m sorry that he struggles with his weight as so many of us do.

  4. Davis says:

I like him…don’t ask me why. Maybe because he’s chubby and us chubs have to stick together- call it solidarity.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I like him too. I think part of his attitude is because he is always lumped in with the Seth Rogens and James Francos…who have a very stoney vibe. Maybe he just wants to make clear that he really cares about his craft?

I dont think he is grumpy, I just think he is trying REALLY hard to focus on what he sees as important so he doesn’t drown in hype and sycophants.

    • Spooks says:

As a fellow chub ( or former chub) I don’t like him. In my experience, people who were fat in high school and become very successful are usually the nicest, kindest, most down to earth people I know. Probably because they remember how it felt not to be. He’s just a d-bag.

  5. marie says:

this dude is so overrated and up his own a-s, I never had a problem with him till recently.

    • Anna says:

Basically till he opened his mouth, right?

    • mom2two says:

Totally agree. He sounded like a total douche in the Rolling Stone interview and it’s not getting any better from him.
      Personally, I think he’s overrated.

    • Miss Kiki says:

Join the club, recently he’s really staring to grind my gears.

    • V4Real says:

He’s just a realy good example that douche bags comes in all sizes, shapes and colors.

  6. Amy Pond says:

Untalented and ugly, inside and out. How does this guy get into movies with A-Listers? That fad will be over pretty soon.

  7. Anna says:

It is so sad that he’s trying to seem all cool by name-dropping half of Hollywood, and ends up looking quite the opposite – like an insecure try-hard wannabe.

  8. GiGi says:

He’s the Kanye West of acting now.

Can you even imagine? People who take themselves to seriously are the worst. If he keeps this up he won’t have the longevity he thinks he deserves.

  9. lisa2 says:

I knew about the Brad and Angie going to his b-day. But I don’t think Jonah was an outcast as a child. His family is in the business. He hung out with Dustin H. kids and had lots of friends. He has said he wasn’t unlucky with girls. I just think he is just getting affected by it all and hope he can bring it down a BIG notch.

He was super cute when he was promoting Moneyball with Brad. So happy and just excited by the experience. Maybe this change is due to his hanging out with Leo and company. I’m not saying Leo is like this. But all of this attitude seems to come after he made that movie. He was not like this when he was promoting 21 Jump Street; at least I don’t recall this kind of press.

    • emmaV1 says:

I agree Lisa….he was super respectful during moneyball and charming when promoting that movie with Channing……..but fame really got to him and I wouldn’t put it past serial date Leo to hav pushed him on that path and probably Leo hooked him up with that SI model.

    • I Choose Me says:

Hm, interesting because although I like Leo DiCaprio as an actor, I think he takes himself way too seriously and if he and Jonah are now besties that attitude maybe rubbing off.

Thinking of that Bill Murray quote (I’m paraphrasing) about all actors being a douche for a year or two after achieving fame, I’ll give Jonah a pass for now.

  10. Miss Kiki says:

I’ve never minded Jonah, until recently. I don’t know what he’s done/is doing but this serious dislike of him is intesifying every time I read an interview of his.

Also he looks weird when he’s thinner.

    • DiamondGirl says:

Agree – he’s one of those people who lose weight but it doesn’t make him any better-looking. The attitude makes it worse.

  11. Jess says:

Ick. Not knowing much about the guy’s personality I’d hoped he was just playing a part for the RS interview, but it seems he really is just a douchebag.

  12. Poppy says:

Prideful is not good. Proud is good (and correct!).

And yeah, he sounds douchey. But he’s always looked douchey to me, so I’m not shocked!

    • magpie says:

I saw that too. Is prideful even a word?

Wow he really manages to name drop a lot of people in one interview.

      • Poppy says:

It is a real word ( a dubious one, but still). It’s primary defintion is “having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy”. I’m not finding it a stretch to believe that of him!

      • Gina says:

It’s word, but it doesn’t mean what he thinks it does. He meant to same proud, but probably thought prideful sounded fancier. Prideful means haughty and having a sense of superiority.

      • Mrs Odie 2 says:

I loved that Freudian slip. The fact that he comes off as “prideful” is exactly what makes him so off-putting. Proud of your accomplishments is one thing. Being prideful is what got Lucifer kicked out of Heaven.

  13. Lucy2 says:

This all sounds so douchey I’m half wondering if it’s some kind of joke, a Franco-esque performance art/cry for attention.

If it’s for real, I will give him credit for pointing out that journalists often asked dumb questions, and I’d love to hear more celebrities just say “come on, I’m not going to answer that”. But beyond that he needs to get over himself, stop the name dropping, and be thankful for everything that got him this far.

  14. Faye says:

I don’t know if it’s just my perception, but it seems to me that almost everyone in that Apatow gang, while talented, are really full of themselves.

    • Lb says:

Seth Rogan and Jason Sudelikis aren’t too bad. Does Paul Rudd count? He’s great as well. But yeah there are quite a few douches in that group.

      • Lemony says:

Oh, I forgot about Paul Rudd! Like him too. A lot. And he has a great acting range. Some of those in Apatow’s gang keep playing the same role over & over.

      • Faye says:

I’ve read a few interviews with Seth Rogen in which he came across as less than likeable, to me at least. I forgot about Paul Rudd, though. I guess I didn’t quite count him because he was doing things like Clueless before Apatow’s crew became popular.

      • Apsutter says:

Paul Rudd doesn’t count. He’s been around since the early to mid 90s and is known as an all around great guy.

      • bluhare says:

Paul Rudd definitely does NOT count. Ever seen him with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show? He doesn’t take himself too seriously at all. Those two giggling and cracking each other up get me every time.

      • Mrs Odie 2 says:

I knew Rudd in acting school in the early 90s. He’s a nice guy from Kansas. Not a douchey bone in his body.

    • Aussie girl says:

      Agreed!!!

    • Lemony says:

You’re right, & they seem to be gettting worse.
I do like Danny McBride though. Hope he can fend off the extreme douche-ness of that gang as long as possible.

  15. Aussie girl says:

I used to like him before I knew he liked himself so much. This guy is a serious name dropper. Oh and the thought of him banging any women kind of really makes me queasy!

  16. Buckwild says:

Maybe he’s irritable and douche cause he has to be perpetually on a diet. I know people around me that went from nice to raging after they lost alot of weight, because they’re so tense from having to limit their eating and working out.

    • Rhea says:

Lol. Maybe you’re right. I know I’m crabby and bitchy whenever I’m too busy and missing my lunch or dinner.

    • Apsutter says:

I know it’s super bitchy(in my defense I’ve been hearing terrible things about him forever. A friend I know interviewed a cast he was part of at sxsw and said he was a complete douchebag) but whenever he starts gaining the weight back all I can do is laugh. He’s soooo self important and wanted to act like the greatest thing ever when he got skinny. Epic karma.

  17. Susan says:

    What a doofus!

  18. hadleyb says:

Angry fat guy syndrome, or insert anything you were teased about in school or why girls laughed at you or refused dates with you.

So now he’s “famous” he’s acting like a douche and just like those aholes who probably teased him.

Bragging about banging a SI model ( really ? WHO??) is just.. sad. A real player doesn’t brag, he just does, there is no bragging. His dick speaks for himself.

Hopefully he will get some therapy for his anger, rejections issues, weight issues/ self esteem problems. Though I will say it’s refreshing to see a man with those problems instead of always women.

    • UsedToBeLulu says:

Not only that, but didn’t he refer to her as an ‘it’?

      This guy’s got major problems.

  19. Nikollet says:

Urgh yuck, what a douche. A serious actor now? Scorsese thinks I’m awesome. Prideful?

  20. Maria says:

I always find it really tacky when people name drop the way he did in this interview.

I could get what he’s saying about celebrity being attractive but based on his personality, he better utilize it, because something says once people get to know him….

    THE APPEAL IS GONE.

He needs to check his monumental ego.

  21. Mrs. Darcy says:

Part of me wants to jump on the “he’s a douche” bandwagon, because he is not doing himself any favours whatsoever. Maybe he just can’t handle the press. I think he is just really insecure so I can’t hate him too much, even though the site of him on that yacht with Leo and the models was just icky. He’s trying to act like he’s down to earth but he’s pulling that kind of skeeviness so it doesn’t gel. He is a decent actor although I thought he was overrated in Moneyball, prefer him in the comedy stuff.

  22. mk says:

Imagine an actress especially of his size talking like that?
She’d be ripped apart while I’ve seen men congratulating him for being an asshole.

He only notices you if you can help him advantage his career or if you are cooler than him. Aboslutely pathetic. The lack of humour and self awareness is the worst offense.
Jonah Hill = Kristen Stewart= James Franco.

    • jinni says:

An actress of any size would get ripped apart for saying anything even close to this/ having this kind of attitude.

      • RN says:

Yup, this. Women are supposed to be self-deprecating, always. And even if they are humble, if they’re judged for just a second as being a “bit#h”, then that’s the label that sticks for the rest of their career and gets repeated ad nauseum on every gossip site.

    • Mrs Odie 2 says:

Remember that old saying: Be nice to people on the way up. You’ll see them again on your way down.

  23. Nan209 says:

Either he really is this big a d-bag or there is a campaign to demote his status. It happens. It’s all about what interviewers and editors decide to print and the tone of the article. Whatever the reasons it’s clear he’s pissed off someone, probably by being a d-bag, and there will be penance.

  24. Sandra says:

Much like Paula Deen, Jonah Hill would do wise to remember that you can think all the “socially unpalatable” thoughts you want in your head where they can’t hurt anyone but yourself. It’s when you let them out that everyone hates you, and sort of rightfully so.

Like, do you think Seth Rogen – who I really feel Hill owes a huge chunk of his career to – doesn’t feel pissy from time to time about the fact that his career seems to be locked in the comedy lane? He’s done some more serious work, but perhaps he too would like to branch out into SERIOUS ACTOR territory. It’s probably pretty frustrating, if that’s what he wants. But the difference is he keeps it inside where no one can bitch at him (rightfully so!) for being an entitled shit.

Brother needs to get over himself. There’s cuter and funnier and more talented in Hollywood – much more. I’m sure they’d be glad to take his place in the low, low world of comedy.

    • Apsutter says:

Seth Rogen was really great in “Take This Waltz.” It’s on Netflix and its such a good, but sad, movie.

    • bluhare says:

Seth Rogen is so much more likeable than Jonah Hill it’s not even funny.

Likeability equals box office, doesn’t it?

  25. Simply Red says:

When someone seems to have low self-esteem about themselves that is what they sound like.. Hopefully he can work that as he gets wiser and older, possibly..

That interview has douche bag written all over

  26. Jackson says:

So he stopped filling himself with junk food but started shoveling in the bullshit instead? Another Hollywood pisser who takes himself way too seriously. Note to Jonah: you dress up and play “let’s pretend” for a living. Get over yourself.

  27. gogoGorilla says:

He was actually very funny in Superbad and Knocked Up. I also liked him in Moneyball. I had no idea he was such a douche, though.

I wonder why everyone in Hollywood seems desperate to be known as Serious Actors. Consider people like Jim Carrey, who was unique in his own crazy way, who hasn’t made one good thing since he decided his particular brand of comedy wasn’t good enough. Or Meg Ryan, who was a rom-com darling (seriously cute in Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, and We’ve Got Mail), who decided she needed to be edgy and show us her bush. Career bomb. (Well, granted, she doesn’t look like herself any more, either, so I’m sure that’s a factor.)

I just find the dynamics interesting. So, you can have a special talent, headline films, make tons of cash, get a lot of public recognition, but then you can’t sleep at night because your peers don’t think you’re on the same level as DeNiro? It seems crazy to me.

    • TG says:

Let’s hope Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn don’t get hit with the same “serious actor” virus that is running rampant in Hollyweird. Those two are my favorite actors and I only like them in comedy and I love comedy. I can watch their movies over and over and never get tired of them.

I also noticed that this douche mentioned that he only dated girls he went to school with because he knew they were with him because they liked him and not his celebrity. I would bet that he went out with these girls I order to feel good about himself and inflate his ego. I bet he was name dropping and acting super cool with the girls to come off as important and well-connected. I don’t believe for one second he was actually fun to date

      • magpie says:

I think those two have a lot more range than they get credit for. I thought Owen was really great in Midnight in Paris and I would love to see Vince do some drama. His last 4-5 movies have been terrible.

      • Apsutter says:

Owen Wilson has been in several serious movies but he actually is talented and was good in them. And Jim Carrey was great in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” but most of the movies he picks are mediocre.

      • LAK says:

Actually Vince Vaughn started in the ‘serious actor’ lane, and was receiving decent notices, but getting no where fast. He is especially good in the Gus Van Sant PYSCHO remake though the film itself isn’t good.

When he switched to comedy in the 00s, his career took off, and he’s never looked back.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

Same goes for Will Ferell, I´m excited for Anchorman 2.

      • Apsutter says:

I forgot about Psycho!! Vince was great in that. And Will Ferrel was really good in Stranger Than Fiction. I actually really like when comedic actors take on serious roles because, often, they’re really good at it. Just look at Bill Murray. The problem comes when they get all self important and start buying into their own bullshit and want people to forget about what made them famous in the first place.

    • nico says:

I have to defend Jim Carrey. He IS a good dramatic actor. Carrey gave a great performance in The Truman Show.

      • Bubulle says:

I concur may I add Man on the moom and Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

      • bluhare says:

I agree. He can be really good. Problem is everyone wants to see him in Dumb and Dumber (which I have to admit is one of Mr. bluhare’s favourite movies).

      • gogoGorilla says:

Well, I don’t want to see him in Dumb & Dumber, but you have to admit that he has unique comedic talents (ability to contort the body and express a lot of comedy with his face). That’s what I was getting at–that he thinks that’s just not enough, or something.

      • Apsutter says:

I can see why he likes doing darker stuff because he actually is a depressive person. He’s battled clinical depression his entire life(his brother committed suicide) and I think he likes letting the darker part of himself out. That’s actually true for a lot of comics, especially if they started out as standups.

      • TG says:

You all are right I was forgetting about the more serious roles of Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and I would have to add Will Farrell and Jim Carey to the mix. I love Vince in Psycho and I am obsessed with Owen Wilson’s 2 movies Midnight in Paris and The Big Year. Have watched both of those repeatedly over and over and over and over again. That is why I said obsessed no exaggeration. I hope Zach Galaginalis isn’t a jerk because he is pretty awesome too.

  28. Faye says:

He just seems really gross and kind of offensive here, frankly. So he’d engage in threesomes with hot women but never a relationship, because they wouldn’t be with him for “real” reasons? Ergo, women must be disposable sex objects to him, I guess.

  29. mytbean says:

Oh come on now… we can’t really be taking this act seriously. I mean, yes – he’s branching out and is as capable as many comedians who’ve done it in the past but I don’t think this pretentious commentary is for real – it feels very tongue in cheek.

I mean – just the photo – it’s a mockery of those that take themselves so seriously. A tailored camo print jacket, floral wall-paper print shirt, teardrop tattoo, gold rolex, flashing cash and flipping the bird.

He’s having us all on while also calling attention to Hollywood stretching his potential beyond comedy.

    • bluhare says:

      See beesknees post below.

      • mytbean says:

I can’t take the photos seriously… He’s too over the top to be an actual believable person. It’s like Franco. I think that they are all just playing these douche characters to toy with the media. It’s working – that’s for certain. 😛

  30. diva says:

He’s gross and takes himself way too seriously.

  31. BeesKness says:

Some years ago, I was working at a restaurant in a resort town for the summer and Jonah came in with some friends. It was during a busy time of day and he wanted a table immediately (pulled the I was in Superbad, I’m Jonah Hill card). He was a nasty, arrogant douche who wanted free food and drinks and to be treated like a king. He wanted everyone to know he was famous but God forbid anyone approach him. He made a huge mess and left a small, laughable tip. This guy is a jerk and has always been a jerk. Just being in some super boring movie with “the savior” Brad Pitt doesn’t absolve him of that for me. I’m glad people are finally seeing the real Jonah, there are lots of stories of encounters similar to mine out there. Even Lainey said he pulled the “don’t you know who I am card.” Plain and simple, he is a jerk.

    • Tif says:

Yep, I read that on Lainey’s site. I was wondering if it was the same restaurant you were working at or if he just pulls the name card on a regular basis.

    • Bubulle says:

I think he is a douche and has always been a douche, hanging out with the A list crowd only emphasizes that.

    • Lee says:

UGH I think it’s gross behavior when people don’t tip well. It’s like they think they’re too important to consider how another person makes a living. I’ve never met a person who was a terrible tipper who I actually liked in life.

      • Spooks says:

Just out of curiosity, how much is an appropriate tip? Because, in my country tipping is not a custom and nobody ever does it.

      • anon33 says:

Spooks, I don’t know what country you are in, but it is my understanding that many other countries actually pay waiters and such a living wage. Not so here in America. Waiters make about 2.15-3.00 dollars/hour, so the bulk of their income comes from tipping. 15% of the bill not including tax is customary.

      • Shoe_Lover says:

I have a question about tipping. We don’t tip in Australia, as waiters etc make a decent wage here, so I’m always worried I’m not doing it properly.

I understand how to tip in restaurants but if I pay for the meal on my card and write the tip amount on the receipt so they can charge that to my card too does the waiter actually get the tip? or is it better to give the waiter cash?
I suspect I tip too much (as in more then the standard amount, not more then they deserve) anyway as most wait staff have always tried to give me change which I refuse as I find wait staff service in America to be fantastic.

        more questions.
tipping hotel cleaners- do you tip at the end of the stay or each day? how much? Where do you leave it? this one always stumps me.
Do you tip the check in staff?
Who else do you tip and how much?

      • St says:

I don’t understand all that tipping in USA too. Where I live – nobody tips. Waitress has her salary.

But the whole tipping in America is ridiculous. I always thought that tipping was invented as some free donations to servants. If you have money and you want to give 1-2 dollars to poor waitress, you can. But in America they actually DEMAND tipping. Like you owe it to them. Like you are cheap busterd if you don’t do it. I don’t understand why they won’t include those tips in price of the food and then give salary to the waitresses. And stop all those stupid tippings. You still pay 15 percent up for the price of the food anyway.

It’s so funny for me every time when I read how some waitress is so angry when celebrity didn’t give her huge tip. Like some would buy $900 wine and then live some 40 dollars tip. And they expect them to give $200 tip for the fact that waitress went and opened that wine bottle? It was such a tough job….

  32. Adrien says:

Idk, what kind of friends does he have and why are they surprised there are A-Listers in his birthday party? Sounds braggy to me.

    • lisa2 says:

I don’t think the part about Angie and Brad going to his party was about A listers necessarily showing up. I mean he told the story of Brad letting him stay in their house in NOLA while he filmed 21 Jump Street. Obviously that showed that he was liked by them. I think it was more that Brad/Angie don’t go out much and it was probably a big deal that they came to the bar to celebrate with him.

But I wish he would take a page out of their book and not talk about others in an interviews.

      • Thiajoka says:

What is going to make it so much harder for him is if the item on C-DAN (I think it was) yesterday about Angie putting her foot down on some of Brad’s more sober-challenged friends not being invited to their wedding is true. Jonah Hill, Quentin Tarantino, and (sadly) Phillip Seymour Hoffman were the three mentioned.

I was sort of hoping it wasn’t true and really don’t think it is, but now…kind of hoping at least the Jonah Hill part is true.

      • add clooney says:

eh, they’ve been trying to sell that story about Angie “banning” people for weeks, even last summer when the tabs were “sure” the wedding was happening. If Angie was really concerned about drunks, Clooney would at the top of the “banned” list. Brad is the one who keeps saying “small, just family” and he is the one that has the relatives that would take big offense to drunks. Of course, Angie has to be portrayed as mean 24/7 or the world would stop spinning on it’s axis. Facts show that she is far kinder and more tolerant than most people and probably 90% of Hollywood. But facts are stupid when you thirst to believe tab lies.

      • Thiajoka says:

@Add Clooney: I believe it was also mentioned in the item that George Clooney was a bit of a concern for Angie, too, although she hadn’t outright banned him.

Now I’m going to just sit back to wait and see what the hell you accuse me of next. (rolls eyes) I was just referring to a story I’d read, not dissing Jolie. Get a grip on yourself.

  33. ??? says:

Another spoiled, posh-bred-in-LA, marginally talented prick who thinks he’s holier than the rest because his Hollywood acting career has been graced by Lady Luck (for now).

Newsflash: getting criticized is part of the package when you’ve made it onto the Hollywood map, Jonah. It blows, but get over it because you sound like a hyperdefensive teenager.

Oh, and I hope you meant to say “proud” in that interview, and not “prideful.” There’s a difference, boo. The latter only reiterates your whiny-assedness.

  34. Apsutter says:

This guy is such a douche and he has one of the shittiest attitudes in Hollywood. Oh really Jonah, that’s sooooooo great that Marty Scorcese just LOOOOVES you. Too bad the rest of us don’t. He’s mildly funny but incredibly limited in his talents and now that he wants to be skinny that kind of kills his appeal in H-wood as a character actor. He better get all his douchiness in quick because I don’t predict that he’ll have some great career. He has connections so he’ll probably always be working but it’s not like he’s going to be in prestige flicks.

  35. Emma says:

Maybe it’s some kind of act like Joaquin Phoenix? If it isn’t he’s the worst.

  36. Thora says:

My boss hired me and hasn’t fired me yet. But I never think it’s because they think I’m awesome. A serious actor is serious? He should read some Christian Bale interviews. Bale is always goofing off.

  37. LAK says:

They say that fame and fortune, especially fortune, allows people to truly be themselves. They don’t apologise for who they are anymore since everyone is kissing up to them. This is who he truly is. no excuses about what may have happened to shape his personality.

He was able to hide it because he needed jobs. Now he is running with the cool kids, he can be as horrible as he likes because he doesn’t have to be nice to anyone else.

    • Apsutter says:

I think this is very true. He better check it tho…if you p*ss off too many people in Hollywood you’ll stop getting good work. All that stuff comes back around and careers can be killed in more than one way. It’d be different if he was some great actor like Sean Penn, but he’s not. He’s a mediocre talent at best

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

And as big as a douchebag Sean Penn is, I don’t think I’ve ever read an interview or heard about how he was being unprofessional to a reporter or an interviewer or bragging about how he’s friends with all these Alisters.

If Brad and Angelina came to my birthday party, (after dying of shock) I wouldn’t say a damn word to anyone….threaten anyone else at the party who says anything with a slow death.

      • Apsutter says:

Good point!! Sean would rather die than be gushing about celebs and name dropping. That has never been his thing. And your right about his interviews, everyone has always claimed him to be very professional when it comes to his work. Which I respect a lot because we’ve all had coworkers who are absolute messes and it shows at their job so I appreciate the people who have problems but hold it together for their coworkers

  38. Merman says:

    Aww.

  39. Meggin says:

Double UGH. He should get over himself. I think you are absolutely right in your assumption that he was most likely bullied in school etc and now has a chip on his shoulder. But seriously, he’s not that famous he should get real.

  40. RobN says:

That’s a dude with no self-esteem. Doesn’t feel it on the inside so he keeps trying to create it on the outside. Net result, sad little douche bag.

  41. Melissa says:

Talking about threesomes and an SI model, “it won’t have kids with you”? Uh, dude, I hate to tell you, but just because you think some sex is super casual, it can totally result in a kid! May not mean the mother will want anything to do with you, but youll be in for 18 years of child support. What an idiot.

I’m also laughing my ass off that he’s holding $20 bills in the photo, and not $100s. Hilarious!

  42. Runs with Scissors says:

Anyone see (I mean hear) him in Megamind? The animated film with Tina Fey and Brad Pitt…

Anyway, in the movie he goes from sweet, chubby nice guy to total douche the minute he gets some power.

I always thought that part nailed him a little too well.

  43. Cool Phosphorescent Shimmer says:

I was neutral on Jonah until maybe a year or so ago when I heard him interviewed on Howard Stern. He told the most obnoxious story about some girl he once dated, and he revealed–probably unintentionally–what a nasty person he is. I don’t think he suffers from low self-esteem at all; in fact, I think he thinks the world of himself and cannot understand why anyone wouldn’t adore him.

  44. Dub-a-licous says:

    SuperDouche!

  45. Bijlee says:

Wow he really is a jerk. How can Channing tatum be in movies with that guy?

  46. Anon says:

It is difficult when one has used food/fat as a shield against hurt or bullies. When one sheds the weight, one needs to check themselves, lest they turn into the arrogant bullies that might have done harm to that young person, we all desperately try to protect inside ourselves.
    Good luck with that, Jonah.

  47. Happy21 says:

The only person I think Scorsese thinks is awesome in this century so far Leo.

    That much is evident.

Jonah Hill can STFU and sit down. I like him in pretty much everything I’ve seen him in but he’s no genius and he’s nothing special.

    • TG says:

U must be the only one that isn’t impressed with Leo’s talent. The only movie I ever liked him in was Titanic. I think he is overrated big time.

  48. Skeptical At Best says:

When he made that comment about “making the transition” all I could think of is how many actors have made the transition. Tom Hanks is the most successful transition I can think of. Jim Carrey wasn’t bad. Will Smith. I don’t know if Eddie Murphy has done other dramatic/non-comedic roles, but I thought he was amazing in Dreamgirls. That caught me by surprise. Jamie Foxx, Oscar winner, was in a movie called Booty Call FFS!!! I’m sure his transition was a little bit more challenging than yours.

    • Apsutter says:

On a side note, I would LOOOOOOOOOVE for Hanks to be in another comedy. He has the chops and whenever I watch The Money Pit I about fall off my couch laughing when the tub falls through the floor and he laughs maniacally for a minute.

  49. prettylights says:

All I took away from this interview are two things:

    1. He’s a douche.
    2. A SI model had sex with him and some other chicks had a threesome with him??? I just threw up in my mouth. He’s not attractive inside or out! It just proves that some girls will bang anyone who’s famous.

  50. Feebee says:

He’s not so “regarded” that he gets to so gratuitously name drop without some serious side eye.

As for the biggest challenge of going from comedic to dramatic, sure it can be more difficult for some but I’ve never heard Robin Williams, Eric Bana or Jim Carrey be so defensive or douchey about it. Though putting Jonah in the company of these names and it’s like, which one of these is not like the other.

  51. bujalnorski says:

This fat freak should thank his lucky stars for that stupid superbad movie while i should be cursing it bc if it wasnt for that dumb movie he wouldnt be where he has. Frackin ingrate

    • Apsutter says:

Yea he’s a total douchebag but I try not to dwell on him to much because he’s not worth it. However, I will always love to watch Get Him To The Greek because that movie is hilarious and he’s great in it with Russel

  52. DeltaJuliet says:

He used the word “prideful” incorrectly and yet it ended up being pretty accurate after all. He sounds like a self-absorbed dickhead.

  53. lori says:

This is the same guy that TMZ caught taking photos of afterbirth on the sidewalk in New York about a year ago right? And now he’s too good for fart jokes?

  54. Cirque28 says:

Although Jonah is being criticized a lot here (and rightly so), it’s interesting how many comments don’t troll or concern-troll or even mention his weight. What a contrast with Melissa McCarthy posts.

Not saying we can’t/shouldn’t talk about weight. I just mean Jonah is more viewed as “Jonah” but Melissa is more viewed as “Fat Melissa But She Is So Talented & We All Hope She Stops Kidding Herself & Gets It Together About Her Weight Or Else She Will Die Young.”

Back on topic… who else thinks Brad dropped by his party for 5 minutes while Angelina kept the car running outside with the kids?

    • Side-Eye says:

In the Mcarthy post, people mentioned her weight because the person attacking her was specifically talking about her weight. People were saying those comments didn’t matter because she’s talented.

And most of the negative comments, of which there are many, DO reference his weight as a cause for what they claim as his low self-esteem. No, not every single comment is about his weight, but this is a different tooic, and it makes it seem like you’re reaching with this comment to be honest.

      • Cirque28 says:

I agree that Melissa McCarthy was defended by many here. And it’s true, we talked about her weight because that post was about her weight. But the majority of the posts about Melissa McCarthy garner a lot of comments about her weight, probably because most of the posts reference her weight, probably because she is constantly being asked about it and/or criticized by has-been movie critics for it.

In my opinion, famous fat men are more likely to be thought of as Douchebag-Jonah-who-struggles-with-his-weight and famous fat women are more likely to be defined by their weight… and little else.

  55. Kelly says:

He seems like a real jerk. I feel like his career won’t last, I really don’t think he is that talented.

  56. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

“You can dis me all you want on a blog…”

Don’t mind if I do, you self important douche nozzle.

  57. Masque says:

Oh Jonah, you just stepped in it. Everyone knows the first rule of Leo Club is you don’t talk about Leo Club.

  58. St says:

Oh, does he has to be such loser? Even what is more important – does HE understand that he sounds like loser when he gives all those quotes about famous people he knows. He acts like he is some poor street boy who was invited few times to hang out with rich famous people and he is so grateful for that…. While other people like Franco or Rogen don’t give a crap and just hang out with famous people like they belong among them.

Jonah acts not like he belongs next to Scorsese or DiCaprio, but more like he was invited for some brief time there and he enjoys it while it lasts. Such loser. Jonah – you are famous name. You was nominated for Oscar. Don’t act like loser who is so grateful that Brad or Leo even spoke to you. Don’t act like poor kid who desperately wants to be included in the club of rich guys just to hang out with them

And it’s not like he plays something important in Scorsese film. He was playing fat sidekick to Brad in Moneyball. And we saw trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street and Jonah was barely there and it looks like he will be playing similar role to the one he was playing in Moneyball. It’d not like he can Lead any powerful drama movie. He can only play supporting sidekick. In comedies too. Next to famous comics or Channing Tatum.

Big directors – please don’t hire Jonah anymore for serious films. He can’t handle that fame with class.

  59. user00005 says:

Fat kid with the inferiority complex who has the motto ‘if you don’t have it, at least fake it till you make it’.
Oh and his Oscar nom was a TRAVESTY. He is only famous, because we expect so little from our Hollywood talent nowadays.

  60. mars says:

It’s not that he was bullied in high school, he thinks he was pretty popular. And it wasn’t that he couldn’t get a girl, I think he did towards the end. His arrogant attitude, I feel, comes from the fact that he was not the Alpha male jock type. And he wasn’t the Alpha because he was fat (at least in his mind). Inside he felt like he was smart, clever, funny, popular, talented, but he wasn’t hot on the outside and I think that’s where his complex stems from. He feels entitled to the same treatment that pretty people get, and when people don’t treat him the way he would like, his only recourse is to be dick or pull his famous card.
And I call BS on the “they knew me before the fame” as to why he dates girls from high school. He dated girls from his school because he COULD. And he probably couldn’t date those same girls when he was back in high school, cuz they were all fawning over his hotter friends.
This guy has issues. He lucked out with Moneyball, and now Wolf on Wall Street. And it literally is all luck and nepotism. Who gets a role in I Heart Huckabees as an amateur? Someone with connections. It’s not really talent that got him where he is, it’s opportunity. It still sucks how he’s acting like an entitled a**hole, used to like him.

  61. Meanchick says:

Doesn’t matter how connected he is, how talented he believes he is and how many celebs do a driveby and throw a gift into his yard on his birthday. If you piss off the wrong people, you’re finished. Period.

  62. Mario says:

People should keep in mind that show business for some people is stressful, strange, and can mess with your mind. He may have a wish to be seen differently and may want respect he feels he does not have yet.
