Nicole Kidman’s new Jimmy Choo ads: uncomfortable, terrible or sexy?

Before we discuss these new Jimmy Choo ads, I’d just like to say something to the people in charge of releasing advanced copies of advertising: this is how you do it. Do it like Jimmy Choo is doing it, where every major outlet gets high-quality images from the campaign, and everything gets released all at once. It’s amateur hour over at Dior with Robert Pattinson’s campaign – they’re not increasing the “buzz” for the campaign, they’re just making everybody angry.

Anyway, as we discussed in May, Nicole Kidman was named the new face/feet of Jimmy Choo. This is – I believe? – Choo’s first celebrity brand ambassador, and their first celebrity ad campaign. I’m saying they spent major money to get Nicole, and then they spent major money shooting these ads. Was it worth it? Well, Nicole is wearing a pretty mangy-looking red wig, and her makeup is kind of awful. She reminds me of (or she’s styled like) Stella Tennant, right? Nicole’s body looks really good, though. I have leg jealousy.

Anyway, Nicole issued a statement about the ads (again, Dior needs to take note of how Choo is doing it): “I really enjoyed being able to play a role that was strong, sexy and in control. I got into a relationship with the photographer, and Mikael [Jansson] is very intuitive, he knows what I am thinking and feeling and is able to translate it through the camera.” Jimmy Choo’s creative director Sandra Choi said: “There is a feeling of a quiet eroticism in the collection, and this concept was brought to life by Nicole’s magnetic presence in front of the camera. Her character portrays the multi-faceted qualities of the Jimmy Choo woman for this season – strong, sexy with a beguiling sense of mystery.”

Here’s the commercial for Jimmy Choo too… OMG. This is almost worth its own post. The duck lips! The legs! The busted wig! The terrible makeup! And shoes, of course. This commercial feels like the beginning of a Saturday Night Live spoof-commercial.

    I like it.
The drama, the minimalistic and cold furniture, the ice-smolder stares, the femme fatale ginger wig… sigh.
Why does it all remind me of the ’90s, and why do I love it? Dunno, but I do.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      Hi Rocketmerry-
It def. does have a 90s vibe somehow.

      She looks AMAZING.

I love Kidman and probably always will, despite her penchant for fillers.
I do wish she would go back to red or strawberry blonde but I also know that she often switches colors, depending on what role she’s currently playing.

      • RocketMerry says:

        Hey Kitten! *Waves, smiling*

This is totally the best she’s looked in a while; her original red colour is THE best hair colour for her, you’re right.
I wonder if this shoot might convince her to embrace the ginger again…? She’d look lovely.

      • gg says:

This hair color is the deal. Love it!

      • Oh dear says:

Words almost escape me. Another unoriginal, predictable and expressionless piece of posing from the Botox Junkie.

    • Yup, Me says:

I agree. I’m glad Nicole has been going back to her original face. I’m not mad at the 5th Element Liloo wig, either. I think, for the most part, she looks better than she has for a long time.

    • Ella says:

Couldn’t disagree more. This is utterly cringeworthy. I feel like it’s aimed at women over 60.

      • Y says:

Who is Jimmy Choo’s target audience? Most women Nicole’s age are hesitant to wear 3 inch stilletto heels for hours on end and younger women will not relate to 46 year old Kidman shilling shoes. The campaign is ill-advised and makes no sense.

  2. leo says:

she looks hot. she really does look best with her natural hair color instead of that awful blond she’s been working with.

    • Buckwild says:

ITA. Bad wig or not, she looks smokin with this hair color.

      • Arock says:

Agree. She’s such a beautiful woman. She should go back to her dead calm days, the red is perfect on her.

      • cs says:

        @Buckwild
I have to agree. Nicole was hot during the red curly hair days.. Not too many actresses stand out on screen for me. But Nicole in Dead Calm did. I loved her until she started messing with the face, lips, and hair.

I still think Tom Cruise did a number on her. Messing with her mind, so much so that she thought she wasn’t beautiful enough.. So she went extreme. Blonde isn’t always beautiful. Lip Fillers or implants are just atrocious on women that have naturally thin lips.

I hate her look now!!! But these photos remind you of the old Nicole.
It’s sad because you know her next red carpet is going to be the rabbit teeth, fried blond hair, eyebrows lifted to her hair line..

      • kingkayski says:

She looks so damn good ,you’d think u are looking at 2o yr old Nicole Kidman, how did they do that!!

    • Stubbylove says:

Agreed. Great ad campaign (minus the video) showing off the shoes in a classy/sexy way. I want them!

      • Sabrine says:

Totally agree. That hair style and color looks great on her. The ad is good, showcases the shoes to perfection on those great legs of hers.

      • Kittykat says:

        Completely Agree!!! LOVE

    • Liza Jane says:

Apparently she’s a natural blonde but red is sooooo much better for her! She looks absolutely amazing! Real star power here!!
Loved it!! She should cut her own hair like this,it’s fab! Love her!! She is an outstanding actress too!
Surprised at the mean girl comments in the intro!!! Never understand the constant sniping at Nicole? She seems like a great, funny, self deprecating girl!

      • Belle says:

Natural blonde? Pretty sure her natural color is red. I’ve seen some childhood photos of her where her hair appears lighter, maybe more of a strawberry blonde, but definitely a ginger. 😉

  3. Turtle Dove says:

I think she looks amazing, and the shoes and boots are fantastic. I’m not in love with the video/commercial. It’s too try-hard erotic which fails.

  4. melina says:

She looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!! She reminds me the old good days!

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

+1 she clearly looks better with red hair and short hair

    • lamamu says:

Yes! Her face looks like hers again. The duck lips are gone. Her face isn’t frozen anymore. hope she keeps it up!

  5. YuYa says:

She should cut her hair like this and dye it red, it looks so so good on her. I wish more hollywood women would get rid of their lank long hair, it looks awful.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@YuYa, who wrote: “She should cut her hair like this and dye it red, it looks so so good on her. I wish more hollywood women would get rid of their lank long hair, it looks awful.”

This is actually pretty close to Nicole’s natural hair color. Did you know she is a natural redhead? 🙂

    • Cece says:

Totally agree with you – the long hair is awful on so many women, especially since they all need those nasty weaves and extensions.

  6. Trek Girl says:

I like them. I really like that ring she’s wearing in the second and third pictures.

  7. Sharon says:

I just can’t with this woman’s face anymore. It’s cringe-worthy to say the least. She looks like all the overly botoxed, face lifted, lip injected, nose jobbed women in their late 40s and 50s who come to sit at the bar at my restaurant and presumably look “hot” when they are just terrifying and it’s very difficult not to stare

    • Dinah says:

I agree with you. I just cannot understand all the hoopla about this woman. She s somewhat facially awkward (but cute) prior to to her botox and filler extravaganza; now her face is just laughable. And her attempts at smouldering looks come off as if she is just about to start laughing.

She does have gorgeously shaped legs, though. Choo got it right there.

      • K says:

I thought she was gorgeous pre-filler and surgery. Never thought she was facially awkward back then.

      • Dinah says:

        Hey, K-

This is my personal opinion. Never was meant to insult or demean anyone else’s opinion. Thought you should know- but if it makes you a little happier, I did say that pre-alteration, she was cute -in my opinion. 🙂

  8. Talie says:

She looks great in that last photo… the wig is actually working for her.

  9. Jag says:

I don’t usually care for ad campaigns, but this one is fantastic! She looks stunning, aside from some of the wig shots. If only I could look that good since I’m near her age. lol

  10. marie says:

I like them, think they’re pretty sexy. She is rockin that hair.

  11. Emma - the JP Lover says:

I’ve loved Nicole Kidman since first seeing her opposite Sam Neil and Billy Zane in the 1989 film “Dead Calm.”

People hate on her, but the woman is an incredible actress. What she has always brought to the table, is EDGE and red hot sex appeal; which is blowing me away in the Jimmy Choo ads above.

Nicole has the edge and hotness Gwyneth Palthrow ‘thinks’ she has, but doesn’t. In my opinion, Nicole Kidman is in the Cate Blanchett and Merle Streep league of actresses.

Sorry … I’ve just wanted to say that for a long time. 🙂

    • Rose says:

I just watched Dead Calm last night for the first time in years! Her face has changed SO much since then. Still i think she looks great here and the red suits her so much, I wish she’d go back to that.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Rose, who wrote: “I just watched Dead Calm last night for the first time in years! Her face has changed SO much since then.”

Yes it has, hasn’t it! But then, Nicole was only 22-years-old in 1989 when “Dead Calm” came out. I barely remembered Bill Zane was in the movie at all. Remember when everyone thought he was going to be the next big thing? 🙂

    • BooBooLaRue says:

THIS! I’ve always admired her talent and that red-hair!

    • Belle says:

+3 Dead Calm is an old favorite… and Nicole looks gorgeous in it, so natural and beautiful. Wish she would go back to her natural hair color AND curls!

The commercial is just so-so, but I think the photos are fantastic! As noted above, I think the last photo is AMAZING!

    • lady mary. says:

i loved dead calm 2 , but my all time favourite movie of hers as a red head was in “Practical Magic”, her beauty took ur breath away in that movie

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Lady Mary, who wrote: “i loved dead calm 2 , but my all time favourite movie of hers as a red head was in “Practical Magic”, her beauty took ur breath away in that movie”

Oh my goodness! “Practical Magic” is one of my all-time favorite movies! Nicole was breathtaking in that film. You’re right, it ‘was’ one of her best performances … Sandra Bullock’s too. They had wonderful chemistry and totally sold the ‘sisters’ thing (wasn’t it freaky that the three generations in their family were two sisters, one a brunette and one a redhead? I loved that aspect of the film :)).

In my opinion, the one actor miscast in the film was Adian Quinn (whom I usually love, but he was SO miscast in “Practical Magic”). The rest of the cast was stellar.

      • lady mary. says:

@ emma jp the lover, couldnt agree more with you ,nicole was so stunning in the movie and yeah aidan quinn looked totally spooked in that movie>))))))

  12. MissNostalgia says:

Hmmm……I’ll go with, terrible! Love the shoes though.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

+1. The facial expressions made me cringe at times. Hard to do a sexy half-smile with that much Botox, maybe.

  13. QQ says:

That hair and how Flattering is to her coloring is so making me forget about her Gummy worm lips!! Like i dont see Them at all!! My God!! Do this, Woman!

  14. Gabby says:

The bob is totally back. Though I think this spread would look classier if the hair didn’t have all those bad highlights and if it were less tousled.

  15. karmasabiatch! says:

    Smokin’.

Not seeing duck lips or “busted wig” at all. Just beauty, great styling and hot stems I would die to be walking around on. Seriously, Nicole always gives me a horrible case of leg envy!

Oh, also meant to add: she should NEVAH go blonde again. Her natural red is totally stunning.

  16. Debbie says:

She is truly stunning and looks amazing. I will say I’m not crazy about the ads but that has nothing to do with Nicole and more to do with the styling.

  17. schuhgal says:

i love the ad, the drama and glamour…she looks great and was definitely well cast!

  18. drea says:

Yeah, that’s a busted wig. I think you can see where it’s sewn (glued?) together at the top.

But it seems she would look good with this hairstyle and her makeup doesn’t look so bad to me. I’m more concerned with her one-note expression. Creative decision or does her face really not move that much anymore?

  19. Jenna says:

Hmm…I don’t know! I love the hair (the cut and the color are amazing), but in these pictures she’s reminding me of some sort of plastic android that belongs in A.I. or some other sci-fi movie! :/

  20. Jess says:

It’s all so 90’s, in a good way.

The commercials a let down though. If you have an actress like Nicole Kidman on board, why not let her do a little actressing? Any model could have starred in that ad.

Remember how huge that Baz Lurhman Chanel ad Nicole did was? I wish there were more ads like that.

  21. Dawn says:

I like it. But I like Nic and she has really great long legs! So that’s it from me.

  22. Anmelt says:

I think she looks great. Red hair is her colour. I remember her during the days on the red caroet with her copper hair, she was breathtaking then. I hate, hate, hate the blond on her. It just does not suit her.

    • Jayna says:

I agree. Although, she was so pretty in Cold Mountain. I feel pretty sure she went blonde mainly because she went really grey so early and red was just too hard to keep up with so much grey and blond was easier. Even then you could see a lot of grey at her roots at times. It just blended in easier and wasn’t so noticeable.

    • pk says:

I agree! I also think that Kate Winslet and Lindsay Lohan look much better with red hair.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

        @PK …

Kate Winslet? Really? I knew Lindsay Lohan was a natural redhead, but I didn’t know Kate Winslet was too. Are there early pictures of her with red hair floating around the Internet?

  23. Jayna says:

The ad campaign is fantastic. I love the wig and makeup. Don’t get the hate on those two things. The red I agree is stunning on her. It reminds me of the color in Moulin Rouge. Her legs are to die for, gorgeous, shapely long legs.

It really makes me want the actual thing it’s advertising. How rare these days with some of these ads. Actually, I want everythiing in this photoshoot that she’s wearing, not just the shoes. The clothes, bags, jewelry, etc. But all the shoes are so fantastic. My love for Nicole is back full force. This is how you wear a little black dress. Those shoes with the man’s white shirt I want.

    • claire says:

I agree! I used to really love her, but the more she changed her face and image, the less I could look at her or buy what she was selling.

      • Jayna says:

She was disturbing looking in Australia. Those massive lips were disgusting and her high frozen forehead and, honestly, wooden acting (I can’t believe I’m saying that) made me want to leave the movie, but Hugh Jackman saved the movie. Then I rented an indie movie, Margot’s Wedding. Not so great movie, but couldn’t get halfway through because of Nicole’s face. This comment from a review said it all:

“It’s painful to watch a movie with characters that leave you cold — but not as painful as seeing what’s happened to Nicole Kidman’s face.”

I went to see the The Rabbit Hole and she was looking more normal again, as also recently in HBO’s Hemingway and Gellhorn, where she looked her age and only one scene where she must have shot up with fillers, lol, where it bothered me. Other than that, she looked pretty in it.

I wish friends would have the balls to tell these actresses/realityHousewives/singers (Madonna) the truth about what they look like from all this overuse of fillers, lip injections, botox, cheek implants.

      • claire says:

I’ve actually avoided her latest movies because I just could not tolerate looking at her. Sounds shallow I know, but the wooden and cold persona, combined with her jacked-up face, really started overwhelming her acting ability for me. So that comment really nails it.

Whoever styled this shoot/campaign deserves a medal because they turned her into a completely different person and overcame all those image issues.

  24. Willa says:

She looks like Melanie Griffith in Cherry 2000.

  25. Jess says:

Shades of Gena Davis in “The Long Kiss Goodnight”

  26. UsedToBeLulu says:

It works. I agree with everyone here who longs for her to be a redhead again. *sigh*

  27. Alyce says:

She looks great in the print ads! I wish she’d keep her hair that color!

  28. LahdidahBaby says:

LOVE it! This is the first time in ages that I’ve seen the full beauty and sexiness that used to be Nicole. There is a bad girl quality to these pics that echoes the wild years of her late teens/early twenties–only this is that wild child all grown up, edgy, modern, and totally stylin’! She needs to keep this flame red hair and the choppy cut, and never again adopt the faded pink-blond tint that washed her out completely and harkened back to Stepford. Really love this look.

  29. mercyme says:

She looks better than she has in ages. She should consider a shorter cut like this that frames her face. The long hair does nothing for her at this point.

  30. serena says:

I couldn’t even finish it LOL. It was so horrible, I mean..come on, your’re Jimmy Choo you can afford a better wig and make-up artist..this is all just so terrible.

    • Annie says:

Jimmy Choo sold the company to some German family. I doubt he’s still making those sorts of creative decisions.

  31. Eleonor says:

    I. Want. Those. Leather. Boots.

  32. gogoGorilla says:

The wig may be busted, but honestly, all I see is how AMAZING she looks with that hair color and an angular cut. LOVE the pics. She looks fantastic. Also, as Tyra says, she is totally selling those shoes. Her legs look six feet long.

  33. Reece says:

    Sexy!

  34. d says:

I’ll never buy Jimmy Choo, but I like this set and she looks pretty good. I agree she needs to cut her hair and go back to red and just do a different look. The long hair, the extensions…it’s just old now. Everybody does it. She needs to freshen up her look and this is a pretty good start.
I also think she’s a fairly decent actress. Dead Calm. She was great in that. My God, that was a good movie. Billy Zane was so weirdly, scarily attractive for a bit there until his psycho eyes creeped me out. He seems to have done all right though.

  35. claire says:

She looks great! She doesn’t look ‘typical’ Nicole, which works, because typical Nicole looks like an over-botoxed scary ice queen. She almost looks like her old self in these.

  36. Tahoe says:

The shoot is fabulous, period. And she looks like she is really enjoying herself, good for her. Love the shoes.
BTW, other media has really positive comments from the public.
Why so snarky about Kidman all the time?

  37. Madpoe says:

I’m seeing a cross between Leeloo (The Fifth Element) & Pris (Blade Runner) Maybe?

  38. Cinesnatch says:

She’s bringing some Anne Wintour realness in the middle photos.

  39. Tig says:

Don’t understand the need to bash the Dior campaign featuring RP. I thought releasing the grainy montage was to set the stage for when it “comes into focus” in Sept.

Anyway, love her with red hair, she has amazing legs, and that’s how you highlight shoes!

  40. Jackson says:

She reminds me of Ann Margaret – HOT!!

  41. Jess says:

I used to love Nicole Kidman and then the frozen face/puffy lips made me just cringe. But I think she looks great in these shots. I even love the wig (she should always be a redhead).

  42. Jennifer12 says:

Am I the only one who’s reminded of the Red Shoe Diaries?

  43. Jane says:

That is the first hair style I have seen on her that I like in many years. The makeup is also great.

  44. Faye says:

I don’t know about Nicole, but I’m willing to get on a waiting list for those green booties in the first pic and the t-strap shoes a few pics down. So they must be doing something right in those ads!

  45. TheOneAndOnly says:

While I do like the austere feel of the print ads, and Nicole in red hair is much better, I’m still old school and prefer models, rather than celebs, in ads – Linda Evangalista at one point the 90s wore her hair short and red, and she would be stunning in this ad campaign; that’s why they used supermodels.

  46. bns says:

I cringe every time I see a celebrity in an ad campaign. Leave it to the models, please.

  47. Nerd Alert says:

Well I would never buy a Choo, but she does look good. Her face doesn’t look so tight and weird, and the red is great on her (for a reason–cough). Overall, I like it, but as I said I’m not the target demographic.

  48. MorganM says:

Didn’t know she was still modeling.

  49. ohiogirl says:

    So hot!

  50. Meggin says:

She needs to cut her hair and dye it back to her natural red. It suits her!!

  51. mimi says:

    She is a beautiful woman.
Sexy and has a beautiful face.
She is probably the most beautiful in the world.

  52. Scarlettmoon says:

I love it, Nicole is gorgeous, always has been, always will be. I love the hair color but why not long, full, tousled hair to go with the look?

  53. gg says:

The ads look great. The shoes look painful as hell and that ring(s?) she has on is ridiculous. Maybe it works for the ad though. I can’t stop laughing at it.

  54. Deebo says:

When are women going to burn high heels and stop torturing their feet? A couple of inches OK, but heels this high are damaging to the spine.

As for the hair, excellent length and color on Nicole.

  55. ParisPucker says:

she’s been airbrushed to hell, but can’t deny she looks good (…w a little help from modern technology)

  56. lisa says:

she looks like she might stab me in those pics

  57. Jayna says:

Isn’t it amazing that they spend an absolute fortune on movies that are so bad, and Dead Calm was probably made for very little and was so fantastic and tension building. I need to rent that movie again. The first time I saw it was ten years ago.

  58. Maggie says:

    Sexaaaay!

  59. Stef Leppard says:

Shoe porn!! I love it! Plus, in the commercial she reminds me of Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair, so… Amazing!

  60. Aqua says:

I’ve been saying for months that she needs to go back to her original red hair color.Even though I make a complete ass out of myself in high heel shoes/boots I love/want everything that is in this commercial.

  61. L.S. says:

I like it! Call me crazy, but I think she looks comfortable and sexy.

  62. Kay V says:

Wow! that is the BEST she has looked in YEARS! Her face (lips) looks amazingly natural!

  63. Bella says:

i THINK ITS TIME TO GET SOME NEW YOUNG BLOOD IN…SHE LOOKS SO FAKE.

  64. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

Hilariously terrible! Did no one notice that ridiculous lip bite at the start? LOL

Some of the shoes were cool though.

  65. American In Oz says:

    I love it!

I think she looks like she just got done rolling around with a handsome stranger.

  66. Ginger says:

That last photo is the only one that even remotely looks like Nicole. Weird. I love the hair color however but I am obviously partial to red.

  67. American In Oz says:

    I love it!
I think she looks like she just got done rolling around with a handsome stranger.

  68. AmericanInOz says:

I love it! I think she looks like she just got done rolling around with a handsome stranger.

  69. xxx says:

Hmmm… I don’t think Nic does overt sexiness well. She always does that big hair flick thing which I think is supposed to be “sexy and free!!” It worked in To Die For, but nowhere else.

That said, this just makes me realise how much better she would look if she went back to her old face and hair colour… I think it would take years off her!

  70. Meredith says:

The shoes are very nice looking but it reminds me of that shoe ad that said “most women’s shoes are designed by men who hate their mothers”. They look very uncomfortable and like you couldn’t really walk in them.

    • michoko says:

exactly(what you said) except I don’t even like the styling of the shoes. I think pointy toes are horrible and we are past that

  71. michoko says:

First, Jimmy Choo ‘shoes are tacky and so overpriced, but that’s not the real problem. The real problem is that Nicole Kidman messed so much with her face she can’t even be credible for a cheesy ad.And people always say that the camera adds 5 kilos but it also minimizes the HORROR of plastic surgery. I worked for a famous jewellery maison in Cannes last year and she is unrecognizable and painful to look at.For me it is just sad.She once was a redheaded beauty and now look at her .I mean don’t.
I mean free will, right? and booze…lots of it to endure one of her performances nowadays, even in great roles like in “stoked”.she nearly ruined it for me

  72. A Fan says:

Case in point – natural hair colour is always the best…

  73. Flower says:

Uncomfortable, terrible or sexy?…..Definitely uncomfortable , Jimmy Choo’s are always uncomfortable.

  74. Carolin says:

If they think I am buying Jmmy Coos now – not. Ugh. Oldfashioned ad, somehow. Really boring.

  75. lady_luck says:

Smokin’ hot. Makes me wanna buy the shoes (not that I can afford them) enough said!

  76. Celine says:

I think she looks good and the ads are well done. Nothing new, but well done nevertheless.

  77. Elvie says:

Her body looks amazing. I want the red shoes bad.

  78. Mom90210 says:

I don’t like NK but she looks really amazing here. Very young for her age. The shoes are amazing as well.

  79. MyLittlePony says:

WoW! She does look good! Like her hair especially. Just wish more women in their 40s (and older) would kind go for shorter hair. Only a few (SJP, Kate Winslet) can truly get away with long hair after hitting 40 while others simply look as if they were kind of hanging onto years and looks long gone (and end up looking older than they really are).

  80. Nyle says:

Love her hair that color, but that was the worst commercial. Almost as bad as Pitt’s chanel car wreck. I HOPE SNL spoofs it.
