Leah Remini’s sister confirms that Scientology members have all shunned their family

Up to this point, all we’ve heard about Leah Remini’s defection from Scientology has been from ‘sources.’ Leah issued a brief statement confirming that she was out of Scientology, but she was vague and didn’t even state it outright. Well now Leah’s older sister, Nicole, has really dished the dirt to a local radio station in Minneapolis-St. Paul, where she lives. Nicole basically confirmed all of anti-Scientology writer Tony Ortega’s scoops, and we can easily assume that she was Tony’s source, since Tony was interviewed by the same radio station to shed more light on this story. For those of us who have followed the criminal Scientology cult for years, nothing that Tony or Nicole reveals is new. The depths Scientology sinks to are astonishing, but these latest stories about Leah are consistent with what we’ve heard from countless other ex Scientologists. What’s impressive about this is how willing they are to go public with this story, and how much Leah’s entire family is sticking their neck out for her.

Here are some excerpts from Nicole’s interview, thanks to Radar Online for transcribing them. You can listen to clips of Nicole on MyTalk1071.com. I’m also including some segments from Tony Ortega’s interview with MyTalk107.1:

Nicole on how Leah got targeted by bigwigs after questioning Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ wedding
You know the funny thing is you start questioning things that are connected to Tom, things getting a little crazy. Leah had brought up to a very, very close friend of hers out of the house, like in private… ‘You know, I just think that it is really weird how involved Tom is with the upper levels of the Church.’ Like what, she just started questioning a little bit like, what was going on.

And just kind of the amount of, how do I, I just need to say this right, how involved he was with the upper level people.

And somebody actually wrote a report on her — her best friend wrote a report on her that she questioned it.

Well then Leah got pulled in it’s like how dare she question what is going on with Tom and his relationship with people within the church.

Nicole on how Tom brought church head David Miscavige with him on his honeymoon.
Yeah, they have a very strange relationship… when Leah came back from the wedding, you know, whatever happens, happens.

Tony on how Leah was treated
I’ve learned now that after Leah complained about the Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes wedding, she was called down for that security checking [security checking or ‘sec check’-ing . It lasted three months. Three months of interrogation. And here’s the thing, you pay [money] for that.

On how Leah’s entire family stood by her. They all got shut out of the church and all their friends
Everybody left… when this all came down, everybody had to make a choice whether they were going to stick by Leah or stick by the church. So they all left at the same time.

They all had to make a choice of what they were going to do. This is how we are as a family. We stick together. It’s just not an option. So, for my family, staying in Scientology under the circumstances was not an option. Choosing the church over Leah was never going to happen. You think about it, if they’d made the other choice, they lose their granddaughter. And me, I’m connected to Leah. My mom then can’t be connected to me.

I think it was hardest for my mom. She’s the highest level on the bridge. OT VIII [‘Bridge’ refers to ‘The Bridge to Total Freedom’, a series of levels churchgoers attain through a process known as ‘auditing’ to achieve spiritual awareness. OT VIII is the highest level]. And I think my dad is like OT VII. So, it’s really, really hard for them. They lost all their friends. I mean, literally, there have been meetings about disconnecting from them.

Nicole on Kirstie Alley ignoring Leah
Have any of Leah’s freinds told her that are in the Church, like, so-called (friend) Kirstie Alley, has Kirstie come to her and said, ‘Wait, what happened? Are you ok? Did these things really happen.’ No! Nobody has reached out to Leah. Not one person…

When Sandy happened… Leah called Kirstie and said ‘Hey, you know, I really want you to help me with Sandy relief, maybe help me get some generators, something, so we can, like, get Staten Island up and running.’ Never heard back from her. Not a phone call, not a text, not… nothing!

Nicole on Kirstie Alley organizing the mass shunning of Leah
Scientology is actually contacting her network of people. Kirstie organized a gathering of people at Melinda [Brownstone]’s house and was tweeting about it [Melinda Brownstone was a longtime friend of Leah’s and the godmother of her daughter Sofia]. What kind of bully does that?

The basis of Scientology is standing true to your own belief and holding onto your integrity and morals. There’s nothing about allowing people to hang on to their own integrity in this. When you’re saying it’s either Leah or us, there’s no integrity in that. When you’re threatening people with all they know, there’s no integrity in that.

Tony on why Scientology shuns ex members
I think in this kind of situation, they [Scientologists like Kirstie] take it so personally that someone has turned their backs on the church. Scientologists are so convinced that they have THE answer to the true nature of the universe and the future of mankind and that they really kind of think of themselves as above the rest of us. The rest of us are just clueless, we can’t see the truth of L. Ron Hubbard’s writing and so when somebody turns their back on it, it really burns them up.

[From on MyTalk101.7 and Radar Online]

There’s more on Talk101.7, including an interview with Nicole on how their family got involved in Scientology, and how she and Leah were sent to the forced labor camp Sea Org when they were teenagers. I was really impressed by how outspoken and candid Nicole was, and also how Leah is letting her sister speak for her. Nicole left Scientology by moving to Minnesota years ago, and she didn’t make waves at the time so no one in the cult told her family to disconnect from her. So she has enough perspective to tell her sister’s story, and she’s certainly done a very good job at it.

Of course Kirstie Alley is now squawking all over Twitter about a “whopping lie” but she’s all hot air. Radar also has a follow-up interview with Nicole in which she goes into further detail about how Scientology makes people disconnect from friends and loved ones.

Oh and in related Scientology news, BBC has an incredible article about how Scientology has tried to control the Internet. Back in the late 90s, they organized police raids and computer seizures of people who dared criticize Scientology on newsgroups like alt.religion.scientology. They’ve also of course blanketed websites with transparently pro-Scientology comments, and have sent notices to Google to remove the listings of anti-Scientology websites. The tide has certainly changed since then.

    And that’s bad?

    • Decloo says:

I agree. The person who escapes this cult should “disconnect” THEMSELVES from those who remain. If your family members and friends don’t go with you then they aren’t worthy (even if they are brainwashed). Escapees should remove themselves from all the lunacy. It’s like the so-called ‘Rapture”–when all the loonie evangelicals are rocketed up to heaven, we can finally get some peace down here on earth.

    • mayamae says:

It can’t be a surprise to her. I’m sure she’s shunned plenty of ex-CO$ herself. Hopefully she had a pretty firm plan of action before leaving.

      • Pandy says:

Right! I’m sure she was all sunshine and roses with the cult until it turned on her …

      • jwoolman says:

Leah and her family didn’t disconnect from her sister when she left. I wouldn’t be so quick to assume that Leah went along with that practice in general.

    • Steph says:

My thoughts exactly! Being shunned by those kooks is a good thing, right??

    • Jane says:

Leah should be counting her blessings that these losers in this con of a cult have disconnected from her. She should be thankful, relieved and saying thank you.

  2. LadyMTL says:

The COS just gives me the creeps. Every time I walk by the COS center near my house I have to resist the urge to cringe, lol. Good for Leah for getting out and good for her sister for speaking up.

    • mata says:

I know what you mean, LadyMTL. I’ve been at festivals and seen their recruiting tables set up. The sight of them just makes me shudder. It is beyond me how Scientology gets to keep it’s camp exempt status when they are so obviously a nothing more than a cult.

      • Ela says:

LadyMTL, we must live in the same neighborhood. 🙂

      • whatsyourbeef says:

@LadyMTL and Ela… The one on Papineau? Same neighbourhood as me too!

      • Steph says:

They have been successfully sued (in many, many places) and outlawed in a few countries but my favourite lawsuit was when they tangled with a crown attorney (now a judge) in Toronto named Casey Hill. He won millions in damages against them. They are a dangerous, evil organization. They need to be stopped.

      • MargoRita says:

Wikapedia “operation Snow White” – you think they’re nuts now? read about how they infultrated the DOJ, IRS and EVEN THE COAST GUARD to get any and all docs that hurt the CO$… they also infultrated, or tried to, Interpol, in the mid 70’s….ballsy, when you realize how quasi Nixonian that was, it’s not like they were copying discs…just read what they did. This is not rumor, it’s cited by idictment and court documents. A LOT of people went to jail. including, L. Ron Hubbard wife, even though it was his idea to get these documents. he threw her under the bus. what a MAN!!! 🙂

    • tmbg says:

I’ve walked by those stands in the mall where they try and talk to you about Dianetics or whatever the hell it is, and I’m like “Eww! Get away from me!” I don’t say anything, but that’s what I’m thinking!

    • whatsyourbeef says:

Gah, wrong place again, i’m rubbish at this! 😉

    • gg says:

I know what you mean. I get an extreme urge to break at least two cartons of eggs all over their building and mess it up. And never have I vandalized anything. Whenever I see one of their little tables set up at the flea market and the squeaky clean people smile at me I an unable to control my Zahara shade face and escape to another aisle.

They are aliens, after all, right?

      • Kiddo says:

I really can’t stand any unsolicited religious outreach, proselyting, or door to door canvasing, regardless of the church involved. From my experience, ALL of the people involved seemed to have been victims of a botched lobotomy, with their terrifying zombie smiles. Thus far none of the people I have encountered have been from COS.

      • Kiddo says:

        proselytizing.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

@kiddo-“From my experience, ALL of the people involved seemed to have been victims of a botched lobotomy, with their terrifying zombie smiles.”

        LMAO!!!

      • Izzy says:

gg, props to you for resisting the urge. You’re a better woman than I am…

      • Tiffany :) says:

I didn’t participate but this story might make you smile…

Some friends of mine went to Berklee in Boston. There was a Cos center there with recruiters standing outside for long periods of time. One winter day when the boys got bored and restless, they surprised the Cos with a snowball fight that they were unprepared for.

Kind of mean, possibly illegal…but kind of funny too. 😉

      • Thiajoka says:

@Kiddo: I’m the same way. I came home one night and found a pamphlet from a neighborhood church on my back door. They had drawn a little smiley face and written, “Sorry we missed you, we’ll call again.” I called the church as soon as I got inside (no cell phones back then), got some sleepy-sounding deacon who had worked late that night, and told him to make sure to let their volunteers know to never come back to my house–that the audacity of their assuming I’d love to visit with them was ridiculous. Maybe an overreaction, but I live in the South and you will get proselytized to death if you don’t present yourself right up front as an asshole.

    • QuietAmyMtl says:

Montreal representing!that little center on Papineau really IS creepy.

      • Steph says:

OMG! I know that place. I also know the one in Toronto on Yonge Street. They’re everywhere. Creeeeppyy……

      • Whatsyourbeef says:

Sooo creepy! It doesn’t like it’s given a huge budget to keep it looking nice. It’s all dank and 70’s looking. Ugh.

  3. Tapioca says:

    High-fives for the Remini family!

The kids come first – unless you’re Tom Cruise and desperate to hold onto a friendship with one of the few men on earth who makes you look both tall and sane.

    • Momoftwo says:

Tapioca that is hilarious!!!! “…both tall and sane…” Love it!

    • kiddo says:

That’s funny Tapioca, except, I’m not sure your second assertion about appearing “more sane” is accurate. Remember the promotional videos he did for the church with his maniacal laughter?

      • Tapioca says:

“Being a Scientologist, when you drive past an accident, it’s not like anyone else. As you drive past, you know you have to do something about it, because you know you’re the only one that can really help. (cut)

That’s… that’s what drives me, is that I know we have an opportunity, and uh, to really help for the first time effectively change people’s lives, and uh, I’m dedicated to that. I’m gonna, I’m absolutely, uncompromisingly dedicated to that. (cut)

We are the authorities in getting people off drugs. We are the authorities on the mind. We are the authorities on improving conditions. Criminals, we can rehabilitate criminals. Way to happiness, we can bring peace and unite cultures, uh, that once you know these tools and you know that they work, it’s not good enough that I’m just (doing okay?)”

        Priceless!

      • kiddo says:

        @Tapioca

He is simply marvelous. Perhaps he can unite the cultures of Leah’s family and the church people who are shunning her? lol

      • gg says:

As loony as Tom is, Miss Cabbage is infinitely more crazy. He’s also a mini-megalomaniac and if reports of his temper are true, bipolar.

      • Steph says:

I never really had an opinion about Katie Holmes until she divorced Tom and took Suri away from COS. Then I had LOADS of respect for her and her intelligence. How she could have married the demented little gnome in the first place is beyond me, but in the end she got away and got her daughter out of their clutches. Team Katie!

    • Pinky says:

You can take the girl out of Brooklyn, but you can’t take the Brooklyn out of the girl. That’s why I’ve always liked Leah. She speaks her mind and brings a little attitude with it. This New Yorker is d*mn proud of her. Stand up for yourself and your family, gurl! And if you can bring down a cult with sass and a Brooklyn accent, all the better!

  4. GiGi says:

Tony Ortega has an interview with Nicole on his site today as well… http://www.tonyortega.org.

I’m really glad they’re being so vocal about this. Since Leah’s entire family has left, COS has nothing to use against her (except, of course, all of her “sessions”) – unlike Nicole Kidman or others who feel they can’t speak out because they have loved ones still in the cult.

  5. Stormy says:

Seriously that whole cult is coming crashing down.

It started when Katie girl ran for the hills and Tom Cruise let her go without a fight (girl knew something) and then that C list girl who we found out was auditioning to be Tom Cruise’s wife and how she was treated.

Ugh that whole cult is super cra cra.

    • Liv says:

Agree, it’s so sick! I will never understand why people stick to the rules to abandon friends and even family!

And what’s their answer to the nature of the universe? I really want to know because I think Scientology is nothing more than hot air. They are not even a religion, they are just stupid people.

Any group you have to pay to get up in hierarchy is highly dubious.

      • Steph says:

This site has a great breakdown on exactly how insane COS is. It details all their beliefs etc. At first you’ll think they’re pulling your leg but this is the real thing: this is what members pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn!

        http://www.xenu.net

  6. FLORC says:

It’s really amazing how much control they had in the 90’s. With all that’s being openly talked from people behind the wall it’s only a matter of time now. The cracks are spreading. Good for Leah and her family. I hope they stay safe and in the public eye.

  7. Micki says:

…”And somebody actually wrote a report on her — her best friend wrote a report on her that she questioned it”….

…”she was called down for that security checking …It lasted three months. “…

I was born in a totalitarian country. Children were encouraged to report their parents, people were “checked” for telling the wrong joke to the wrong person. I’ve always thought it’s the rules of the party that formed the life back then.

But how people in “free” world will enter such a “church” willingly, conscientiously- that’s completely beyond me. Sounds to me like a form of “elevated” masochism.

    • Mich says:

The get sucked in because CO$ only shows them the good things in the beginning. They then set about cutting people off from their families and people outside the church while brainwashing them.

Back when Leah’s family joined, we didn’t know what we know today. The secrecy veil was firmly in place.

      • Micki says:

You know there we had a big cult wave after the “wind of change” in the 90’s.
People were shown the “good things” and then after some time asked to “sign” their property to the cult. And go to some camp in another country. A family in my neighbourhood just managed to escape from Siberia. With 2 children! They came back as beggars. No house, no job, no nothing but htey were happy!

I am not against church or belief in general. Many people go regularly to church and need it too. I do fast twice a year and go occasionally. But I have strong views on “a church” that tries to bypass person’s free will of “giving” or demean its followers regularly like CO$.
Hope they don’t get new believers now that there’s no “veil”.

    • insomniac says:

It is amazing. Turning people in to higher-ups for asking the wrong questions and sending people to labor camps for being insufficiently loyal sound like things that happen in North Korea.

    • Bridget says:

Cults prey on the vulnerable, and many simply dont realize what they signed up for until its too late. It’s not like people walk in from off the street and they say ”welcome, here’s a copy of Dianetics, now cut off everyone in your life and give me all your money”. It’s insidious. They give you a ‘personality test’ (that is incredibly vague and weird, you can find it online) that of course no one ever passes. They set you up with basic materials and some auditing. To start, its not ridiculously expensive, and they’ve already targeted those who are more inaecure an vulnerable. It just escalates from there.

  8. JL says:

So Tom took David Miscavige on his honeymoon. Unholy Hell!

Guess I need to go look at David’s picks and compare them to Suri!

Poor Katie, she must have been enamored or totally brainwashed.

    • Masque says:

Suri looks nothing like David, however, she is the spitting image of Tommy Davis.

      • Jaded says:

@Masque – you’re spot on. I’ve always said that Suri is Tommy Davis’s spitting image. Ironic that Tommy has blown Co$ as well and is hiding out somewhere. My theory is that Katie had to have some “assistance” getting pregnant, i.e. a turkey baster of sperm that she thought was Tom’s but she found out somehow that it was Tommy Davis’s sperm. Tom Cruise may have a heritable form of holoprosencephaly (a malformation of the brain) and one of the results of it is extremely misaligned teeth (see pictures of him when he’s a kid and his teeth are crazy). He’s had extensive surgery to correct this but he still only has a single central incisor tooth which is one of the symptoms. He was probably afraid to pass on this condition but wanted a child with Katie so secretly had a senior Co$ person (Tommy Davis) donate some swimmers.

      • Decloo says:

I always thought Suri looked just like Tom but, holy sh*t, I just googled Tommy Davis, and you are so right. They are like twins.

      • Kiddo says:

@Jaded, I’m no fan of Cruise, but I think diagnosing him with a brain abnormality, based on a snaggletooth in youth, is a bit out there.

    • gg says:

Suri was already born when they were married, if you’re thinking Katie got pregnant on her honeymoon. She was at the wedding.

  9. Birdie says:

I always loved the King of Queens and loved her, but I was also sad, when I found out that she was a $cientologist. She was always so “real” and outspoken, so I was shocked when I found out. So I am really happy that she left that cult! Hope a lot of other celebs follow!!

    • Tiffany says:

I don’t throw shade right away at her and other 2nd generations because that was the family church and how they were raised. It often takes a lot to leave. She is doing so now and hopefully will commit.

    • Steph says:

Yeah, I feel the same way about Elisabeth Moss! When I found out she was into COS, I was so disappointed. I thought she was smarter than that.

  10. Sarah says:

Yuck! I still don’t get how people can’t see through Scientology.

  11. tmbg says:

Go Reminis! I’m glad they’ve stood by her. I read she’s been a Scientologist for three decades. If that’s true, she was just a little kid when she got involved and I can see why she stayed for so long.

It’s just baffling to me that anyone can get on board with this nonsense. It’d be like Gene Roddenbury starting a church based on Star Trek, although that would have probably been infinitely more popular. 😛

  12. kiddo says:

It’s nice that the family is sticking together. Because they left wholesale, it sounds as though it won’t be as traumatic because there is built in support from people who went through the same experience.

People who don’t speak to you after you leave a job, a church, whatever, are not real friends. So no loss there.

  13. KierneM says:

Good on Leah and her family! I wish them all the best!

  14. Nicolette says:

Hope this is the beginning of the end for Scientology. One creepy ass cult that needs to vanish already.

  15. GiGi says:

Just reading through this Tony Ortega interview – Leah and her sister went into the Sea Org at 12 & 14! These are no “surface” Scientologists – they were deep – insane!

  16. Buffoon says:

Leaving COS with a bang calls for guts and integrity. Kudos to Leah and her family.

    • kiddo says:

I don’t think they will be able to shush her or her family. Someone mentioned this the other day, that Leah will probably do a big interview. Now I can see that happening. I imagine it probably would be good for her career, as well. Thoughts?

      • Steph says:

I agree. I never really paid any attention to her prior to this — never watched her show or anything else she was in — but now I have oodles of respect for her for standing up to these frauds. I’d support her all the way just because I admire her courage.

  17. Lemony says:

    Wow.

  18. Lem says:

Co$ education is a sad thing. I can’t hardly, you know, like get through, uh, her, the sister’s statements. Nicole kinda actually like hurts my brain like when she talks.
Did we know this sister pre defection? She is giving too many interviews. Are they close? Is she truthful? She does sound a bit like she is giving a.version of a version of a story she heard.

    • kiddo says:

We haven’t heard Leah condemn anything that she has said, so I’d say she has the family’s approval to speak.

      • Lem says:

Yes. But every family has one who will talk our their arse for attention. Leah hasn’t said anything, really, yet. So… ? ? ? We shall see.

according to the Mail today, the sister has said leah was sec checked for questioning Tommy & David’s relationship after witnessing “inappropriate” behavior at the Holmes/Cruise wedding and privately mentioning such to a “friend”.
Let us hope the main stream runs with those quotes and clarification

      • TG says:

Are we sure Lem isn’t a Co$ plant? He or she talks like an uneducated SeaOrg member or else Lrm is just bring funny.

      • jwoolman says:

It’s quite reasonable for a person in the family who is most comfortable talking about it to be the one to talk in public. Nicole seems to be that person – she’s been out for a couple of years while the others (including Leah) just left. If she says anything Leah disagrees with, I’m sure our girl from Brooklyn can correct the record herself.

The Co$ trolls are out in force elsewhere, though. I saw some weird comments on the Daily Mail that sounded like Co$ minions. One person blathered on about “most religions” encouraging disconnection by believers when someone leaves the religion. Um, no, they don’t. Half the Christians in the world and 1/4 of the US population are Catholic. When heretical me stopped being Catholic, nothing happened except my mom and brother stopped arguing before Sunday Mass (my brother has always been a procrastinator, hence we went to a lot of 5pm Masses…). My aunt once said going to Mass was an occasion of sin for those two, the yelling and screaming was so bad. But once I stopped going, you could see the halos popping out above their heads As they quietly went out the door on time for Mass, and I wished I had thought of that solution earlier. The only other thing I remember was years later my mom hid a St. Joseph medal in my house, which I found while moving. Anyway, even if family and friends are unhappy with your change in religion, they certainly don’t disconnect and their churches certainly don’t encourage disconnection. I survived 16 years of Catholic education and never saw anything remotely like that ever in all my religion classes and readings in Catholic religion.

      • Kiddo says:

@jwoolman, I’m not supporting Scientology, but there are other religions who shun, like the Amish (I know Amish isn’t a religion, but I don’t know what branch of Christianity they subscribe to) as well as other fundamentalist Christian groups and religions outside of Christianity. Leaving a religion can get you killed in some places in the world, so Scientology would not be alone in its fervor for compliance/adherence.

    • Lem says:

“Stop the car, Co$. Let me out of the car. ”

If the Catholics could not get their hooks in me, Co$ doesn’t stand a chance. 😉

      • TG says:

The Catholic argument is so boring. Come up with a better one. I wasn’t sure if you were just making fun of Nicole’s language skills or if you were a Co$ plant and now am even more convinced that you are a Co$ plant.

      • Emily C. says:

@TG — Yep. I was suspicious before, then Catholicism was trotted out.

      • Steph says:

I’m going to have to side with TG and Emily on this one. Lem’s a plant.

      • Lem says:

Lem’s been here for YEARS. I even have my commemorative Lohan mug shot shot glass set!
C’mon and have a shot, then we’ll discuss any of the things in my posts.
        Co$ school = sad
        Tommy + Dave = inappropriate
        Nicole = Leah approved/selling stories?
My Big Catholic Family yet meh. Nonbeliever
Witty quote = last TC movie I saw
What did I miss? Or did y’all start Happy Friday without me, again?

      • Kiddo says:

        @Lem, Funny

  19. Sonia says:

Good for Leah and her family for this big escape, I wish all the best to them. I really believe that each person should choose her/his religion, it is a matter of choice. But seriously – COS is as far from religion as it could be, it is really a cult. It scares me even by reading about it. Now I see that Katie Holmes must be living in constant fear because Tom Criuse really sounds like a crazy man. Who on earth would bring “church leader” to his honeymoon?! I stopped watching his movies long time ago, I feel it is like giving money to that cult. Sorry for my bad english.

    • doofus says:

      bad English?

honey, you write in English better than a LOT of native speakers!

(just like to add that I love how this site is so “international”.)

  20. Katia says:

I don’t get why people are so desperate/broken or so naive that they will fall for this evil money pyramid scheme.

Why is elisabeth moss a co$?
    No comprende

    • Kat says:

Elizabeth Moss was born into scientology, AFAIK

i never understood until i read Paul Haggis’s interview.

He explains in detail how he was pulled into it and it is scary how rational it all sounds. His take was that it was a form of therapy that worked in stages as you advanced up each level. And since each level allowed him to fix whatever problem he was having, he thought it was a very good belief system. And he thought the big xenu reveal was a joke someone was playing on him….apparently he didn’t connect the dots to see that xenu was the point of their beliefs, then again he wasn’t a fervent believer like Cruise during his time in the co$.

The whole thing works because co$ is big on secrecy and never letting the congregation know the entire truth and it seems aren’t allowed to discuss amongst themselves or even to dissent with what they’ve been told. Instead, they are kept on a need to know basis and if they have any questions, can only talk to the people who audit them and of course in the process get more brainwashed until they can’t think for themselves and think it’s perfectly normal to be this way.

Finally, the rules about disconnecting from non-co$ is a sure way for them never to learn the truth because they are never challenged on their beliefs.

      • Ennie says:

What I recall being sad, is that TC also had a big shock when presented with xenu (small case letters). I read somewhere that the aliens, volcanoes and the spasceships it were unbelievable.(no kidding!)
That was one of the reasons he and Nicole were not close to the leaders for a long time until he started being wooed back, and since Nicolw would not comply with the church’s ideas.
Then TC divorced her, and went completely loony and tried to select the “perfect” COS wife, maybe they think that being married is an image of sucess? Well, that worked out great, didn’t it?
Their crazy beliefs are one thing, it would be kind of respectable if they did not had such a crazy cold war army /totalitarian country structure, were not such money grabbers (In my religion I can decide if I cooperate monertarily or not, attend or not,it is up to ME, they do not bash me o rtake me to forced labor), and if they did not “suggest” people to cut ties with friends or family who bolt or have different ideas than them.
They could worship a … Whatever if they were not such an impositive crazy cult.

  21. Emma says:

Tom Cruise and David Miscariage sound even crazier (and more in love)than i thought.

    • TG says:

Yes I love how Leah’s sister let that stuff slip. From a gossip perspective and from someone who despises Tiny Tom I am happy to see someone from that batsh*t cult FINALLY bring that lift wearing midget into the dialogue. Poor Katy and Nicole have been too scared too do it.

  22. Nerd Alert says:

I really hope their stinky sweater of secrets becomes unraveled. Word is Leah is thinking of doing a big interview herself. I would watch the hell out of that, all the while praising her massive, impressive cajones.

    • Isabel says:

Oprah should have saved the millions she pays Blohan for a talkshow for Leah. I would love to see her expose these freakazoids, instead of Blohan saying she only did coke ‘like once’. And then crash her car again.

      • Kiddo says:

I don’t think Oprah would want to offend the couch jumper, because he is a bigger star. She’d probably be tougher on Leah than with others she has interviewed.

      • Nerd Alert says:

I have *no clue* why Oprah is going to pay that freak $2M and expect the truth, but I agree the money would be better spent on Leah.

Though kiddo raises an interesting point. Is Oprah a CO$ sympathizer? All I know about her is that she summers in Telluride near where my parents live. Actually, my dad was the contractor who built her and Tom Cruise’s/Nicole Kidman’s mansions there, about fifteen years ago now. I wonder if they’re tight, since they’re (former) neighbors.

      • DoloresChurch says:

Oprah loves her Scientologists. She is staying out of that.

    • Steph says:

Eleventy billion thumbs up on that one, sister!

  23. PoliteTeaSipper says:

We should send emails or something to Leah’s camp to show our support.

  24. Looloo says:

Man, Scientology can get into a time machine and teach the Nazis a thing or two about fascism. godwinned. Sorry.

    • SusieQ2 says:

Where do you think Hubbard came up with his ideas? The Nazi Party and Hitler Youth.

  25. Apsutter says:

I’m so glad that her family is standing by her. But just think of all of the people who try to run and have to go through it all alone, broken, and broke.

    • Isabel says:

I find that the creepiest part about this ‘church'(aka crazy ass cult). People are so obsessed with it they are willing to sacrifice their loved ones, shun them, make fun of them and slander them in the name of Xenu. They would rather have them kill themselves because their life/image/reputation is destroyed than accept some people just don’t wanna be part (anymore) of some (crazy, insane, sick) ‘religion’.
I can’t imagine that doing to my friends, family, or even strangers!

  26. Emily C. says:

Nicole Remini also gave an interview to Tony Ortega: http://tonyortega.org/2013/07/18/leah-reminis-sister-nicole-how-we-got-into-scientology-and-how-leah-got-out/

She and Leah were in the Sea Org when she was 14 and Leah was 12. Adults got in her face and screamed at her, accusing her of having sex, when she was 14 years old. She denied it, as it didn’t happen. Said adults then went through her and her sister’s underwear drawer, found lace underwear, and screamed at both sisters and threatened to discipline them. This is the point at which their mother pulled them out of the Sea Org, but she kept the family in Scientology (hell if I know why).

That’s sexual harassment of young girls by adults. There is no way that in an atmosphere like that, worse doesn’t happen to teenage girls on a regular basis. This isn’t just some nutty UFO cult that takes the money of credulous adults. It’s incredibly abusive, including abusive toward children, and that needs to be emphasized every time it’s discussed. I think Celebitchy has done a fine job, but mainstream outlets have been very lax about it.

    • Ennie says:

They were probably tring to depersonalize them, stop them from being their own peraons and become part of the mass mind of theirorganization. Brain washers.

      • jwoolman says:

The techniques L. Ron promoted really are classic brainwashing techniques. One of the hazards of letting your religion be founded by a psychotic who knows too much about control techniques.

    • jwoolman says:

The SeaOrg incident explains why her family was aware enough and strong enough to leave together. Her mom believed her daughters and pulled them from SeaOrg. They didn’t drink all the koolaid and stood by family from the beginning.

  27. MonicaQ says:

I just had a friend that left, 2nd generation Scientologist and he had to leave this are (Tampa Bay, FL) because the HQ was so close and they kept sending Squirrel Busters to his house. He lost everything, family (no kids because Sea Org members aren’t allowed kids normally), house, what little money he had after paying $30,000 a year on classes and “auditing”. To quote him, “I’m in a homeless shelter in Miami, I have not a penny to my name and for the first time, I’m free.”

    • Kiddo says:

What’s a squirrel buster? Like someone who breaks nuts/balls? I’ve heard the term before, but I forgot the meaning.

      • MonicaQ says:

They’re basically a group of people that aren’t “officially” related to Scientology but they are Scientologist. Their entire job is to make your life a living fraking hell. Follow you everywhere, set up camp outside your house, film you, try to antagonize you and get you thrown in jail. It’s a common tactic used by CoS members on members who’ve left to try and say, “If you talk, this’ll just get worse.”

      • Kiddo says:

If they are close enough to film you, then they are close enough for you to film them.

Do they get paid as thugs?

      • MonicaQ says:

Unofficially but most Scientologist unless you’re in the top tiers (OT VII or VIII) you make next to nothing. It’s really sad. Most Squirrel Busters think they’re doing a great service–“fair game”, no matter what they say is still in play.

(Fair Game was a term used by L Ron Hubbard that basically said, “People who threaten Scientology can and should go away. And we make them go away by discrediting them, getting them arrested…or worse.”

      • doofus says:

“If they are close enough to film you, then they are close enough for you to film them.”

yes, and there is a video shot by Marty Rathbun of some of their harassment of him. I think it was on Ortega’s site.

they are CREEPY. and they look ridiculous, with cameras affixed to their hats, and too tight t-shirts with the logo on it.

  28. SusieQ2 says:

Yet again, kudos to you CB for keeping the spotlight on the sinister actions of this evil cult.

I am glad that Leahs family has not disconnected from her and it is so encouraging to hear her sister Nicole speak out.

Her interview with Tony Ortega at The Underground Bunker is a real eye-opener for non-cult watchers, simply because Leah is so well known.

And if you can stomach it, read some of the real-life disconnection (yes, it exists) stories here:

    http://tonyortega.org/2013/07/17/scientology-claims-no-forced-disconnection-so-tell-us-about-yours/#more-8542

THIS is just one of the things the cult is capable of.

  29. Andrea says:

Thats amazing to me that her parents are so high up in there and they still left because they don’t want to shun their daughter. I wonder though if they have regrets? They put them in sea org when they were kids!

Its interesting watching a cult from the outside.

  30. Shelby says:

I support Leah, hope she stays strong. I actually like her even more now.

    • Isabel says:

Same here! Before I just knew her as the chick from King of Queens. Now she is the badass b*tch who kicked CoS in the balls, love it!

My respect for her went up 1000% and I am sure tons of people feel the same way.

  31. mimi says:

Anything to do with Scientology creeps me out. It seems more famous folk who got all caught up in this suspicious cult are having second thoughts lately. Like Leah, they’re finally coming to their senses by getting away from it for good.

  32. JL says:

I’m shocked to discover Greta Van Susteren is COS.

That throws a shadow over ANYTHING she says for me.

    • Kiddo says:

Oh, I didn’t need the COS association for that. Other things, like her serious girl-crush on Palin and drastic personality change after her move from CNN were more than adequate.

    • Steph says:

She never ever struck me as the voice of reason in the first place. Or particularly stable, for that matter. And (as a completely irrelevant aside) WTH was up with that plastic surgery that turned her into a completely different person??

  33. Isabel says:

i feel so bad for this woman. I am happy that the general public thinks CoS is insane (at least I hope) and won’t listen to the dumb crap they will write/yell/whine about this woman. I for sure won’t listen to it, just point and laugh at their sad attempts at ruining this woman’s reputation. They really show their (insane) true colors.

Good for her she got out!
Still don’t understand people just listen and don’t ask the obvious questions, like Leah did. Are they that brainwashed and fearful (dumb question, of course they are :P). Sad.

  34. Spectra says:

You notice how some scientologists stick together in movies and television shows, makes me want to vomit. My friends husband keeps telling me about that show “my name is earl” is so funny, I wont dare to even try to watch an episode of that stupid ass show. Two of them aliens are regulars/stars in it.

  35. Mia says:

All I have to say is Scientology: WTF is wrong with these people? What kind of crackpot religion is this?

  36. homegrrl says:

I love the age of information. I knew people getting sucked into that years ago. By some dumb luck I didn’t fall into that rabbit hole.

Now with all the books and online info, I not only stay away from cults but I initiate discussions all the time. Years ago, we would never have known how the average “seeker” could ruin their lives.

    • Steph says:

I think you hit the nail on the head, Homegirl. They can’t hide their crap from us anymore, not with the internet and the information age. The world truly is a global village and it’s next to impossible for them to hide their dirty little secrets any more.

  37. candigirl says:

I’m really proud of this whole family for sticking together and loving each other and being brave enough to challenge this murderous criminal cult. Hey FBI, this is what the RICO act is for, use it!

    Where is Shelly Miscavige???????????????????????

    • jwoolman says:

Take a look at the tonyortega site. The latest info is that she’s been reliably sighted working at some super secret Co$ site outside LA, tasked with preserving L. Ron Hubbard’s writings in case of nuclear war. She hasn’t had any contact with her family and seems to think she’s rightfully being punished for something. She seems to also have said, when asked about when she expected to see her family again, that there was “only one way” for that to happen. That’s been interpreted to mean someone close to her would have to die, since the only other sighting since she was sentenced to the archives was back several years ago at a funeral, where she was closely watched by Co$ keepers. So there’s a good chance she’s still alive although more brainwashed than usual. The site gives more information about how she probably displeased David by accidentally doing what she thought she was supposed to do.

  38. DoloresChurch says:

When I was watching the news about those horrible Southern California fires, I saw they were near Hemet. A cult compound called, I beleive, Gold Base is right there. That is where Shelley Miscagive is being held.
If these horrible fires have to burn something, they might as well take down a creepy Scientology compound and smoke out Shelley.
    Mother Nature vs xenu.

  39. Deeana says:

Oh, I am so disappointed that Elizabeth Moss is one! That WILL alter my opinion of her.

    Re: Tom Cruise
I actually think we have him to thank for the disintegration of this cult. I’m sure the little twerp Miscavige never would have thought things would get so out of hand as they have. But it was the Tom/Katie divorce that really “put the icing on the cake” after the couch jumping, the Matt Lauer interview and the cackling laughter.

And I just can’t imagine why ANYONE would/could have thought that Katie would be a perfect co$ wife. She’s from a Roman Catholic family and her father is an attorney, forxenusake!

  40. Barbara says:

I would like to know why TMZ is not mentioning anything about COS on this story….scared or paid off???
