Prince Harry talks about his nephew George: ‘When I saw him, he was crying’

Here are some new photos of the happiest uncle in all of England, Prince Harry, yesterday in London. Harry attended a photography exhibition by Chris Jackson at the Getty Images Gallery – the photographs were highlighting Harry’s years of work with his charity, Sentebale. While in attendance, Harry joked around with other attendees and with reporters, talking about his nephew Prince George and how he (Harry) will definitely be the uncle to give the kid his first sip of booze. Okay, Harry didn’t really say that but it was the subtext.

Prince Harry joked tonight that he hoped his brother knew ‘how expensive my babysitting charges are’ and also vowed to teach his nephew to have fun. Whether his offer was a promise or a threat, given his most recent antics in Las Vegas, remains to be seen. But the 28-year-old helicopter pilot was clearly already besotted with his new nephew Prince George.

The prince went to see the new family addition at Kensington Palace shortly after his brother and sister in law returned from hospital on Tuesday night. As he spoke tonight he gestured with his hands and described George as being ‘about this long and that wide’.

‘When I saw him he was crying, which is just like all babies,’ he said. ‘It’s fantastic to have another addition to the family. I only hope my brother knows how expensive my baby sitting charges are!’

Asked who he most resembled, Harry said the baby was just four days old so it was too early to say. But asked what kind of uncle he wanted to be, he said sweetly: ‘to make sure he has a good upbringing and to keep him out of harm’s way and make sure he has fun. The rest of it I’ll leave to the parents.’

Asked if his brother’s apparent confidence with the baby car seat outside hospital on Tuesday indicated he was cut out to be a good father, he replied loyally: ‘Of course he is!’

He also admitted to having had a lovely cuddle with the tiny baby boy.

Harry was speaking at the launch of an exhibition by photographer Chris Jackson highlighting the work of his charity, Sentebale. Harry co-founded the charity in 2006 in memory of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. It works to help children in Lesotho, a poverty-stricken African kingdom affected by HIV and Aids. The country has the third highest HIV/Aids rate in the world, despite being one of the smallest kingdoms. Almost one in four of the population are infected. Entitled Sentebale – Stories of Hope the exhibition is free and runs at the London Getty Images Gallery from July 26.

[From The Mail]

Oh, Harry and George are going to get into so much trouble when George gets a little bit older. Every scandal is going to begin with “So Prince Harry was babysitting his nephew…” and every story will end with “… and Uncle Harry said he would pay for all of the damages, and then he had another drink.” Yes, Harry will definitely be the “fun uncle”. So does it follow that James Middleton will be the “dodgy uncle”?

Love everything he said. Funny, cheeky and full of love.

  2. Esmom says:

Yeah he has all the makings of a fun uncle, most notably warmth and playfulness. Kate’s brother, on the other hand, not so much.

    • mslewis says:

But, how do we know what James is like? I don’t ever remember seeing an interview with him and he doesn’t seem to be anything like Pippa who loves the spotlight. I think he’ll be a great uncle and a good influence on George (to balance out Harry’s influence). A kid can’t have two crazy uncles.

      • Esmom says:

If I’m remembering correctly he has a sketchy/skeevy past, which the Middletons worked overtime to keep under wraps. Didn’t some scandal break with him right before the wedding? My mind is fuzzy on details but I guess I’ve retained an overall image of him as a less than savory guy.

      • Suze says:

There have been some photos of James partying that pop up on the internet occasionally – I remember a few where he was dressed in women’s clothes and rather drunk.

That said, he could be a perfectly nice person. He does seem to eschew the spotlight, which endears him to me, actually. The Middleton woman are enough of a media sensation.

      • Kitten Mittens says:

James Middleton had the urinating in front of paps during the time when William told Kate to keep a low profile months before the engagement. Kate was there and incredibly embarrassed as her brother found the whole thing hilarious. He’s had several failed business ventures. The highest profile mistake was the pastry shop. It was a money pit.
For the most part his history of being a spoiled, wasteful boy was whitewashed. He still shows signs here and there of that behavior and was very demanding that Kate’s royal bodyguard assist him. That was way out of the man’s job description. Just an entitled pseudo aristo, but nothing truly scandalous like Uncle Gary.

He’d be the perfect funcle! Lucky George

    • molly says:

he has all the makings of a peoples king, unlike his booooooooring brother !!

      • Pandy says:

Let’s be fair – William knows he will be a king so he can’t afford to be the cheeky charmer … that’s not his role.

  3. Anna says:

OMG, Uncle Harry & Baby Georgie stories are so much cuter than Will & Kate as New Parents stories. Can’t wait till the two hit the town together!

    • blue marie says:

I came for the photos, but agree Anna..I can’t wait to see a photo of them together. ovary overload

    • Eleonor says:

      Agreed!

    • Frida_K says:

So true. My first big laugh of the morning came from this quote here:

“Every scandal is going to begin with “So Prince Harry was babysitting his nephew…” and every story will end with “… and Uncle Harry said he would pay for all of the damages, and then he had another drink.””

I can so easily see it, and how can one not laugh?

      😀

      • Anna says:

We should make a note of this somewhere and then pop a bottle of Dom when this actually happens. Because it’s only a matter of time.

    • The Wizz says:

Considering George will be king I cant imagine he will be hitting the town with Harry at all.

  4. DailyNightly says:

“and every story will end with “… and Uncle Harry said he would pay for all of the damages”–LOL! I can sooo see this happening!

  5. GiGi says:

James Middleton was the dodgy uncle way before this baby came along.

  6. fancyamazon says:

I think Harry is proud of his brother and nephew, and also glad to have someone else in front of him in line. 🙂

  7. DanaG says:

I think James will be the boring more sensible Uncle he seems to be that way. Harry is going to have lot’s of fun with little Georgie as he grows. Georgie needs that and I think William and Kate are looking forward to it.

  8. chloe says:

I’m sure William has already informed Harry that there will be no nephew/uncle Vegas trips.

    • bluhare says:

      Unless William’s invited. 🙂

      • Kitten Mittens says:

But the story would be how Harry made mistakes in Vegas with no mention of William being there at all. I understand the heir will always be made to look better at the spare’s expense, but I wish people would open their eyes a bit. Harry should be 2nd…*shrugs*

      • LNG says:

I’d be willing to bet that Harry is not interested in being 2nd.

  9. stevie says:

I used to really dislike Harry but in the last few years he has really proven himself to be, sure a party animal, but also just kind of a stand up guy.

  10. Micki says:

He could really be a great uncle, having had so many faux pas himself he may teach the next king how to avoid them while still having fun.

  11. Sisi says:

Yeah Harry’s gonna be That uncle, the who’ll teach toddler George all kinds of dirty words, to the horror of mom who’ll have to explain them to the kid.

    • bluhare says:

We were that aunt and uncle . . . had a long line for sleepovers, and we didn’t even DO anything!! You don’t have to really. Well, we did let them watch (previewed!) South Park episodes. They weren’t allowed to at home.

  12. JL says:

    George: “Uncle Harry can I?”

Uncle Harry: “Oh why the Hell, I mean heck, not – just don’t tell your mummy!”

Kate: George WHAT are you doing?
    HARRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYYY

  13. SamiHami says:

“Every scandal is going to begin with “So Prince Harry was babysitting his nephew…” and every story will end with “… and Uncle Harry said he would pay for all of the damages, and then he had another drink.””

Kaiser, funniest, best, and probably most true lines you have ever written! 🙂

  14. Yelly says:

He’s adorable. What a fun uncle he will be!

  15. TheOriginalKitten says:

Man he’s so cute and witty.

    • irishserra says:

I was just thinking similar. I was thinking, “My, what a good looking man.”

  16. CC says:

Harry is by far my favorite royal.

  17. Suze says:

Harry and George pictures will be the ones I stampede to see.

The Today Show had the interview from where these quotes came, and Harry was getting a bit irritated with the continued questions about the baby. He handled it well, with humor, but you could tell he wanted to go about his charity gig and be done with talking about the baby.

  18. Helvetica says:

    The Hot Uncle 🙂

  19. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Wills Kate and the wee one def should visit Prince George in Canada!

  20. magpie says:

I know it’s premature, but I really want them to have a girl now. The princes will be gaga.

  21. Feebee says:

July 2033… Uncle Harry organises a 21st birthday celebration for George in Las Vegas over objection of his brother who is stuck on royal duties standing in for his father King Charles who fell off his polo pony last week. He has been told it’s time to lay off the polo. It is believed the Duchess of Cambridge (or possibly Princess of Wales) is trying to work her schedule to allow a trip stateside.

Young women from across the country are said to be making Las Vegas part of their summer vacation plans.

  22. Dot says:

Really hope that one day Harry marries, has a daughter and then a son. Then the media can go wild about a girl being ahead of a boy in the line of succession.

I know that it won’t really matter in the long term because the duke and duchess of Boring and Yawndom will have another rugrat.

But I think that Harry would be lovely with a daughter.

    • The Wizz says:

There are plently of girls in front of boys in the line of succession. The old law and changed law only ever related to brothers jumping over sisters. For example the Pricesses of York are ahead on the line of sucession than Prince Edward, even though Prince Edward is Queen Elizabeth’s son. Any child that Harry has will be sitting at around , 5th, 6th or 7th in line to the throne and Princess Beatrice is currently 6th in line to the throne AFTER George’s birth.

  23. Ginger says:

Harry has always been the naughty trouble maker…that’s one of the reasons he’s adorable.

  24. Reece says:

Uncle Harry and Baby Georgie are the pics I want to see! Although I may have to go see a doc for an ovary problem afterwards.

But these will do for now. 😉

  25. bettyrose says:

I guess it is good the first baby was a boy. A girl heir wouldn’t have been allowed any fun at all. I hope the second baby is a girl and Harry takes her out at 18 for some hell raising also.

  26. chalkdustgirl says:

I would love to get babysat by Uncle Harry.

  27. janie says:

Love him!! He’s so excited about the little Prince.. Diana would be over the moon about this sweet baby. I think she would so proud how both boys are so close & are really good men.

  28. Amy says:

I’ve always found it hilarious how the tabloids basically do not care about James Middleton. He is rather plain looking and while he may have some pictures of him dressing in women’s clothes/urinating in public, nobody seems really interested. Does he do anything? Does he work for the family business?

    • bluhare says:

Don’t know what he’s doing now, but he did have some bakery/pastry business selling cakes decorated with off color themes. I don’t think it was making any money, though.

Now? Not sure, other than he’s dating some blonde TV person.

  29. Reese says:

I know William and Kate get all the attention, and while they seems like nice people, they bore me to death. I always though Harry was the cutest and most down to earth.

Boy did that guy grow up to be handsome. Wow.
