Is Julia Roberts planning an intervention for niece Emma’s violent behavior?

Julia Roberts Emma Roberts

This story feels like a repeat of an Enquirer story from last April that said Julia Roberts was worried about Emma Roberts clubbing it up and dropping out of college. At the time, Aunt Julia was supposedly planning some “tough love” for her niece, who Julia feared was on the way to becoming the “the next Lindsay Lohan.” Back then, the only real fear I had for Emma was that she was starring in a movie called The Girl with the Tramp Stamp Tattoo. Nothing good can ever come from a film with that title.

Over a year later, the Enquirer is doubling down on their claims (and repeating “the next Lindsay Lohan” verbiage too) in light of Emma’s recent arrest for domestic violence in Canada. To recap, Emma was taken into custody for biting her boyfriend, Evan Peters, and bloodying his nose. Of course, Evan declined to press charges and kept his relationship going with his abuser, and Us Weekly reported a tale from Emma’s camp that tried to dismiss her behavior as part of a “passionate and extreme relationship.” Supposely, Aunt Julia is super worried now, and she’s planning an intervention. We’ll see about that, won’t we?

Julia Roberts is so terrified that her niece Emma Roberts is spiraling out of control she’s planning an intervention!

Emma — who’s 22 and reportedly heavily into the Los Angeles party scene — was busted for domestic violence in Canada on July 7 after allegedly getting into a bloody brawl with her boyfriend, “American Horror Story” star Evan Peters.

Julia was badly shaken by the arrest “and called an emergency family meeting,” revealed a family insider. “Emma’s behavior has been out of control for a long time and it needs to stop before it’s too late. Julia is going to make sure of that.”

The “Pretty Woman” star has good reason to be worried about Emma’s troubling behavior, says the source, as substance abuse runs in the family. In 2010, Emma’s father, actor Eric Roberts — who has wrestled with drug and alcohol problems — appeared on the “Celebrity Rehab” show to kick his longtime addiction to marijana. But just a year later, Eric released a video supporitng the legalization of pot.

“Julia has all the reason in the world to intervene with Emma,” said the family insider. “Emma has absolutely no supervision. Julia told the family that she wants Emma to get help right away.” Confided the family insider: “Julia’s greatest fear is that Emma will become the next Lindsay Lohan.”

[From Enquirer, print edition, August 5, 2013]

Meanwhile, this week’s issue of Star says that Emma’s violent episode was not out of character: “She may appear to be innocent and sweet, but Emma also has a dark side. She can be temperamental, controlling and jealous — and it often takes a toll on Evan.” Things have been pretty quiet for the past week or so on the Emma Roberts front. Maybe Aunt Julia really gave Emma a call and told her to put a lid on it. Some serious therapy for Emma and Evan couldn’t hurt either.

She’s coming down to mingle with the mortals?

    • springingforward says:

They are two peas in a pod.
(I don’t really think Julia exerts any energy for anyone other than herself.)

      • Christin says:

Similarities galore! I wondered how long it would take for auntie to insert herself into this from a PR standpoint. As for a family meeting, do they all even get along?

  2. Esmom says:

Emma’s home life/upbringing has got to have been effed up. Julia clearly loves her niece but it’s hard to tell if her influence is helpful or harmful. Sounds like Emma might be better off coping with the help of professionals.

  3. Karen says:

Emma needs some help. If Julia is intervening I imagine a small part is about keeping her image as well as every article starts with “Emma Roberts, Julia Robert’s niece. ”

Geez I’m cynical today. Um something positive…. I never noticed how great Julia’s legs are. I’m kind of jealous.

  4. bns says:

I really cannot stand Julia Roberts. Like, her face/voice makes me cringe.

  5. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

All I have to say is: I really hope that title you said, “The Girl With The Tramp Stamp Tattoo” is fake. That legit sounds like a p0rn film.

I’m pretty sure it was just one of those shorts that Funnyordie posts-it wasn’t an actual film, thank goodness.

“She can be temperamental, controlling, and jealous…”

Hm. These sound like personality characteristics of someone who could become an abuser – maybe going down a slippery slope without even realizing what they are becoming.

Here’s hoping that she gets real help, and not just some hand-waving PR releases from her narcissistic aunt.

  7. blue marie says:

Wasn’t Julia violent at one time? She’s probably giving Emma pointers. They both annoy me but at least Julia can act.

  8. Tara says:

If the Julia is intervening, i.e. footing the bill for high profile rehab while she herself avoids being pap’d with her then its just or publicity. Oh please. Emma comes from a troubled home and has been reportedly drugging and acting out hardcore for a long while now. Should we believe this is just coming to Aunty Julia’s attention? She figures if Emma ends up in jail, in the hospital or worse she can prove that she tried to help and do some bs public service announcements. If Emma gets help and her career thrives then she can beam down upon her niece contentedly from her throne knowing the Roberts brand is secure.

    • Moi says:

Yep. I truly loathe only one actor/actress in the world and it’s name starts with a J and ends with an A.

  9. The Original Mia says:

She wasn’t raised by Eric. Julia made sure of that. He was excised from that brat’s life when she was a young kid. Emma has always been an unpleasant, self-absorbed girl, who grew up thinking she was talented and entitled. She’s not.

I hope Julia is helping her.

  10. wonderwoman21 says:

Ugh Emma Roberts is gross, so her violence against her partner was justified and consensual? It’s just “passion”. The fact that they wrote it off like that tells me she is the aggressor.

  11. lisa says:

i have a hard time thinking julia thinks there is anything wrong with emma’s behavior

  12. Joblow says:

Another young actress riding the wave of a famous relative. Why cant these people get famous by themselves?

  13. Pink G says:

    Anything for attention.

  14. magpie says:

I really don’t think the two are that close. Emma has issues and she doesn’t seem like a very nice person either. She was pretty mean to Ch-ord too.

  15. Bodhi says:

She may appear to be innocent and sweet, but Emma also has a dark side. She can be temperamental, controlling and jealous — and it often takes a toll on Evan.

That is code for emotionally abusive, which can very easily turn into physically abusive. I hope she gets her sh-t under control &/or that Evan wakes up & leaves her. If she hasn’t already, she can f-k him up for a long, long time.

  16. kim says:

They don’t seem very close so I doubt it’s true

  17. Christin says:

Auntie has a movie coming out this fall that is supposed to be a big deal. Now the niece that she seemed so personally vested in has further tainted the family name. After all this time of keeping a relatively low profile so people might forget her own messy diva history, one would think Auntie must be livid at her precious niece.

  18. savanna says:

Has anyone else seen those photos a day or two after the incident that TMZ posted of her walking around with bruises all over her legs? I just have a feeling they have a mutually abusive relationship.

  19. Me says:

Heard Emma is going to be on AHS this season. That really pisses me off. She will ruin the show with her crappy acting and horrid troll attitude.

  20. blaize says:

I don’t know much about Julia or Emma Roberts. This is the first place where I’ve heard that they’re both bitches. I’m used to people only saying positive things about them (especially Julia). I’ll have to look at the Julia Roberts thread to learn more about her bitchy behavior.

    • Christin says:

Look up “a low vera” and how she and her hubby got together for starters. Oh, and when she and hubby were photographed parking their huge SUV in a handicapped space. A columnist called her out for rude behavior at a big premiere. That’s just the last decade or so. Her personal life was tabloid fodder during the 1990s.

This post and the comments should be very helpful to better understand:

      • blaize says:

Ok. I read that article on celebitchy and the first 5 pages of the site’s Julia Roberts thread, and just from what I’ve read my impression of her is that she’s overconfident, likes attention (which in and of itself isn’t a bad thing in my opinion, although it can be annoying, depending on how the person goes about getting it) and is used to it being on her,and can be naggy and obnoxious. (but probably thinks that’s assertive)

I’ve met lots of people like her in my life. She doesn’t seem intentionally malicious or mean, (unless she thinks you’ve insulted her) and there are many worse bitches than her both inside and outside of Hollywood, but she’s still a diva with an ego on her. Tomorrow I’ll read about Emma to see why people disliked her even before she assaulted her boyfriend.

  21. skuddles says:

An intervention for her violent behavior? How about starting with an intervention for her booze and drug problems?

  22. ParisPucker says:

argh who cares. this girl can’t act – she’s only known because of her famous aunt…riding on her coat-tails from obscurity and then we learn she’s a brat.

  23. jemshoes says:

I gave up watching Celebrity Rehab with Dr Drew on Australian catch-up TV not too long ago because Eric Roberts was one of the main patients I really couldn’t stand (actually, all of them bar Jason Wahler were completely narcissistic and egotistical). So if his daughter Emma has anger issues and using issues, I’m not surprised. I’m only surprised Aunt Julia is willing to get involved since she and her brother absolutely do not get along.
