About those ‘Sam Mendes cheated on Kate Winslet, with Rebecca Hall’ rumors…

Back in 2010, Kate Winslet and her director husband Sam Mendes announced their split. It was surprising because they seemed well-suited for each other, they had a son together, and they seemed genuinely tight and supportive of one another. There were lots of rumors about his “boredom” and her “career-obsession” but eventually we got some good old-fashioned affair rumors. It seemed that at the time (late winter/early Spring 2010), Sam had been spending a lot of time with actress Rebecca Hall. Hall is probably known best to American audiences from The Town and maybe from Parade’s End too.

Well, some time passed after the initial “Sam cheated on Kate Winslet with Rebecca Hall” rumors and then in 2011, the Mail ran a “confirmation” story that Rebecca and Sam were now officially (and quietly) dating. And now here we are in 2013… and these are the first paparazzi photos I’ve seen of Sam and Rebecca looking couple-y. They were in NYC together and it looks like they’re making an effort to NOT hold hands.

So, basically, more than three years after the initial reports of an affair, we have some kind of confirmation that Rebecca and Sam are together. And they’ve probably been together all this time, I think. Maybe Kate’s marriage to Ned RockNRoll made it easier for them to “come out” as a couple. But I still feel like Rebecca is probably the biggest reason why Kate and Sam’s marriage failed. Homewrecker! Burn her! Or something. Honestly though, Sam’s history with women is this completely. He was with Rachel Weisz and then Kate Winslet was “the other woman” who stole him from Weisz. And now Rebecca did the same thing to Kate. Who will “steal” Sam from Rebecca?

  1. Sisi says:

She was in iron man 3 too, right? She was horrible in that, girl has no intonation at all. She didn’t even try.

    • Amelia says:

Her films are a bit hit and miss, IMO. I liked The Awakening, didn’t think much of Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona.

      • stinky says:

omg she was the WORST in VCB. she was absolutely distractingly bad. i dont like her acting, her ethics, or her adam’s apple neck.

    • Yep says:

Her voice was *weird* in Iron Man 3.

I wouldn’t judge her by that movie, though. She’s hardly in it and her character is pretty useless.

    • Agnes says:

She was good in Parade’s End though

    • Liv says:

I don’t like her. She doesn’t seem very bitchy but not the friend type either. And I totally believe they cheated on Kate. Aaaaand she’s a crappy actress. I agree that she was horrible in Iron Man.

    • Anna says:

To me she was actually the standout in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Completely overshadowed ScarJo.

      • stinky says:

ooomg. beg to differ. watch the scene where Penelope goes off w/ the gun. then watch Rebecca. omg. she was SO awful i’m convinced they kept that take because Penelope was so spectacular. Rebecca WRECKED it. so bad…

      • stinky says:

i totally agree w/ you that ScarJo was a snooze to be rekoned with.

      • EscapedConvent says:

I tried to like Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but the entire thing just annoyed the hell out of me. Vicky & Cristina were so dull, I just watched it for Penelope, who was fabulous.

And for Javier, which probably goes without saying.

    • ALG says:

I agree, she is not an actress for comic book movies. I’ve never been impressed by her, actually. She’s totally average.

    • T.Fanty says:

She’s made for stage. She’s phenomenal to watch live. And she’s brilliant in the Red Riding Trilogy with Andrew Garfield.

    • Mairead says:

I liked her in Frost/ Nixon. I thought she held up well against McFeyden, Langella and Rockwell.
(I really love Michael Sheen but regardless of what Hollywood tells him, biopics are not his forte.)

  2. fabgrrl says:

Rachael Weisz and Kate Winslet? Sam Mendes sure gets some fine ladies!

    • Yeah, lucky him! Rebecca is a major downgrade though, I think she’s a crappy actress and not very attractive either.

    • Bijlee says:

The man may be talented but he doesn’t seem to have much respect for the women he’s married to or dating if he keeps pulling crap like this. Its funny how Rachel and Winslet ended up marrying/being heavily involved with famous directors who signed the Polanski petition. Like those guys names were at the top of every list I saw.

And yes I think Rebecca hall is a bland actress benefitting from nepotism and upper crust connections.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

Winslet worked with Polanski as well.

      • Bijlee says:

@stellajoy no, I know. I was just saying. I remember when the petition was signed by those guys but not their girlfriends or wives I figured it was their own personal statement. I would like to believe that Rachel and Darren had disagreements over it and I felt the same way about Mendez and Winslet. But then Winslet went and worked for him, I found out how she really felt. So disappointment on both ends must say.

      • stellalovejoydiver says:

I see, ugh thinking about that petition makes me so angry again, it was a really eye-opening moment about Hollywood for me.
Also smh @ Christoph Waltz, he is planing to work with him again.

      • N says:

Rachel was already secretly with Daniel Craig together when Aronofsky signed the Petition!!!

    • QQ says:

Yup, dude stays outkicking his coverage

    • Mairead says:

I was also wondering how this little beardie fella keeps pulling hot women.

  3. V4Real says:

This man must be good in bed because I don’t see the appeal.

I hope she kept her hubby stealing paws off my man RDJ during the filming on IM3.

    • kibbles says:

It takes two to tango. Hall might be a homewrecker, but Mendes is the type of jerk who likes to go from one attractive actress to the next. He has no problem cheating on women and that is just his personality which should be a huge warning sign for any woman not to get serious with him.

RDJ seems absolutely head over heels in love with his wife. Even if Rebecca or any other woman had come onto him, I want to believe that RDJ wouldn’t give into temptation. It was Mendes job to do that when he was married to Winslet.

      • V4Real says:

I agree it does takes two to tango but didn’t Kate do the same thing to Rachel Weis? This doesn’t mean that this cheating ass is not responsible but women need to learn that if he did it to her, he will do it to you.

I also agree with you that it was Mendes responsibility to not give into temptation but if he was the pursuer of the affair then he wasn’t giving in to temptation he was going after what he wanted. Hall would be the one who gave in to temptation because she was creeping with a married man who pursued her.

      • kibbles says:

Mendes and Rachel were never married. I don’t even know how long they were together but it didn’t seem like a long-term serious relationship. It’s always bad when someone steals a person who is already taken, but I think it is much worse when the person is married or in a serious long-term relationship. Winslet and Mendes were married and had a child together. Also, Rachel stole Daniel Craig from Satsuki Mitchell who were together for 6 years, so she’s not exactly innocent either.

      • V4Real says:

@Kibbles I never claimed any of these women were innocent. I basically said what goes around comes around, meaning if he will do it to her, he will do it to you, that is all. No one looks good here

    • Emily C. says:

RDJ adores his wife. Multiple gorgeous women could be waiting in his bed naked and covered in whipped cream and he’d just call housekeeping to clean up the mess. (Though he might take some pictures first.) Then he’d call his wife to laugh about it.

If a man cheats on you, he was going to cheat no matter what. Men cannot be stolen.

      • V4Real says:

No one adores RDJ more than me (ask any lady that knows me on this site) and I would be just as heartbroken as his wife if he did cheat. But let’s face it the man has said himself that he cheated on his first wife multiple times. I know he has tuned his life around and owes a big part of that to Susan but he’s still a man. We can’t hang on to the once a cheat, always a cheat but a man can love and adore his wife to death and still cheat. He stated as well that he does have a darkside.

I guess you never heard those rumors about him and Jude Law. Hey but those are just rumors; hot rumors but just rumors.

  4. KatieD says:

Eh, I don’t wish ill toward anyone, but I generally agree with the sentiment that “how you got em is how you’ll lose em.” Especially given this guy’s long history of skipping from one woman to the next. She’s a big girl- if, knowing his history, she’s willing to take the chance, then what can you say, really?

    • MaiGirl says:

Yes, this! I don’t quite understand how people think that they are so special it won’t happen to them. Clearly, this is a pattern for Mendes and other people. I feel really sorry for his children, who have to be affected by his jumpoff-go-round.

      • KatieD says:

Exactly…if this is someone’s usual routine, chances are that no one will ever hold his interest for the long haul. Seems like he gets bored easily. Obviously we can all relate to the new relationship love/lust feelings where maybe you are able to talk yourself into believing that you will be the special one that will finally tame this wild horse (lol), but in the end, it’s not about the women he’s dumping…it’s about him and his issues and as long as he has those issues he will behave the same way!

    • KC says:

Exactly. And let’s be honest, people: Kate Winslet has abjectly awful taste in men. I have canned food in my pantry that lasts longer than her relationships.

  5. blue marie says:

I have nothing constructive to add, so I’ll just say I hate those sandals.

  6. Dani says:

Why do all these young, attractive and successful (save Rebecca Hall) girls see in him?? He seems like such a sleaze.

  7. Sarah says:

They are both quite homely, IMO.

  8. Ellen says:

Isn’t this a thing? People who only end a bad relationship once they’ve found their jump-off? It’s always seemed skeevy to me, but at least by now, no one who dates Mendes can claim surprise when he does it to them.

    • Teeny says:

I think there’s a great fear of being alone. I know a lot of people who “secure” their next person and then break up with the current. I have always been a fan of introspection and soul searching after a relationship ends… And the occasional no strings attached hookup 🙂

      • MaiGirl says:

I think you’re right. I personally need a few months of crying, reorganizing my house, and figuring out my part in the break-up madness before I’m ready for the next relationship. I’m not particularly attractive during that time!

    • Andrea says:

I always find a new guy before I dump the one I get bored with first. Just my deal. No fear of being alone, fear of being without sex. I never say I love you for 6-8 months into a relationship, its always a lust thing for me. haha

  9. Sixer says:

I’m just going to stick up my hand, stick out like a sore thumb, and say I’m a big fan of Hall. I’m quite surprised people are saying she can’t act. Gal’s got talent in spades.

(Ceased caring about Winslet’s and Mendes’ respective love lives ages ago. They both seem douchetastic to me).

    • Meerkat says:

She was great in Starter for Ten and Parade’s End. I think she’s beautiful and talented.

    • Kaye says:

Me, too, Sixer. And I thought she was good in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

    • mom2two says:

I agree, I like her and find her to be a good actress. The two of them have taken their sweet time to be seen out and about as a couple. If I were her, I wouldn’t exactly be looking at him for a long time thing given his history.

    • Sixer says:

I don’t know if Red Riding aired outside of the UK, but she was also fantastic in that. And she was a tour-de-force in Parade’s End.

    • bns says:

Yup. She’s a great actress. They’re just hating.

    • T.Fanty says:

I love her. I adored here in Sam Mendes’ Bridge project a few years ago (hmmmm), and loved her in the Red Riding trilogy. And Sylvia was WAY hotter than Valentine in Parade’s End. I’m looking forward to seeing her in Machinal this fall. I think she’s gorgeous and talented.

    • Jayna says:

      I agree. Very talented actress.

  10. Izzy says:

Wait this is parades end hall? …..o….k….

  11. lucy2 says:

So he’s one of those guys who doesn’t leave until his next is lined up? Lovely. Hope she’s prepared to watch the same thing happen to her in a couple years.

    • Mo_cheeks says:

He’s a branch swinger! ie doesn’t let go of the current branch until the next is firmly in hand. I know a woman just like that & in her case it’s pathetic and has led to an amazingly long list of failed relationships- all of which she firmly believed would end in marriage. Maybe if she was a rich director they would have! Ha

    • Emily C. says:

Yep, he’s a serial monogamist. He may very well not have cheated on Kate physically, but he definitely did emotionally. I bet he spent a lot of time on the phone and texting with Rebecca, talking about how great she was and how his wife just didn’t understand him…

  12. Yep says:

I had no idea Mendes was with Rachel Weisz, too. Weisz, Winslet, and Hall? Damn. He must have a magical dong.

    • Lisa says:

Me neither, re: Weisz. I don’t know who’ll be next when things go south (and they inevitably will) with Hall, but I know one thing: I won’t have sympathy for anyone involved. By now his pattern is clear.

    • Leah says:

Doubt it, he is a talented oscar winning director thats attractive to a certain type actress. Weitz also dated uber talented but not so hot Darren Aronofosky for years and had a child by him so she likes her talented director.

  13. Rice says:

I like the sandals. That’s all I’ve got.

  14. eliza says:

Personally, I thought she was great in Parade’s End and several films.

  15. L.S. says:

I think they sorta look like they’re disagreeing in those photos. Maybe I’m just being hopeful?

    • Kleo says:

Ha, I know what you mean. It looks like he’s not too happy with the paps taking their picture and she’s just kind of looking on. If you go to the Daily Mail there’s a picture of him walking in front of her with his brow furrowed at the camera, clearly agitated. Something tells me Sam’s been the one pushing for them to be secretive as past girlfriends like Jane Horrocks have talked about him getting mad at them if they speak about him to the press. This situation is so sticky that I’m not surprised this is the first we’re ever seeing of them. My question is this: how does Rebecca feel about it and is she having regrets? Is being connected to an Oscar-winning director worth being called a home wrecker who has to hide a big chunk of her life?

  16. embertine says:

I will turn this around and steal Hall from Mendes. Come over to the dark side, honey, we have cookies.

But only if you leave those fugly sandals back in the hetero world where they belong.

  17. Bridget says:

I can’t believe this guy keeps pulling in these ladies.

  18. Blanca says:

This is too funny, before this post I was reading the post on the Bana movie and I didn’t know she was the reason for Kate’s break up. I guess what goes around comes around. Karma does exist :S

  19. Elodie says:

Wait… how come no one mentioned The Prestige? She was pretty good in that compared to ScarJo bafflingly plummy accent. I thought there was some surprising chemistry with Bale. GAH! I enjoyed that film, Jackman/Bale rivalry was so amazing

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

I loved Prestige so much, love Christian Bale as well.
As for Rebecca Hall, I don´t know if that’s just me but she is lacking the it factor. Whenever I see a picture of her I have forgotten how she looks like 1 sec ago.

      • Bijlee says:

Female characters in Nolan films are typically one dimensional and completely boring. I’m so tired of his dead wife trope too. I loved how he brought that into the dark knight. The death of a beautiful woman is always his motivation for his characters.

And I guess I should watch parades end to see why Rebecca hall is so special. At leat Benedict cumberbatch is in it!

  20. Itwillrain says:

I don’t get the sandal hate…unless those are rhinestones…then I get it. 😉 But from afar they remind me of the Balenciagas…which I love.
    http://www.balenciaga.com/us/sandal_cod44552502df.html
BTW I couldn’t really tell what he looks like from these photos so I did a google image search. My conclusion is he looks like a pale Billy Joel. 😉

  21. Lindy79 says:

If nothing else, this thread has pointed out more work of hers that I was aware of.
I’ve seen way more of her work than I thought.

She was fantastic in Parade’s End, most people I know actually preferred her to Valentine because of Hall’s performance. Not sure why she’s getting so much hate.

    • Ponytail says:

Ooh, if you haven’t seen “The Awakening”, please do ! I thought she was fantastic in Parade’s End, but I first liked her work in The Awakening, and it was the first time I saw Dominic West and thought he was good. It’s a lovely, quiet, creepy film, and bears up to more than one viewing.

  22. Vesta says:

I wonder what it is that these women see in this serial dater. I’ve seen some of his interviews and didn’t find him particularly charismatic.

He has done some good works, but I didn’t love his take on Bond.

  23. Kemper says:

Kristen Stewart. She likes directors but Sam & Becky will have to get married first.

  24. Algernon says:

He keeps getting older, the women stay the same age…

  25. amanda says:

he was with both rachel weisz and kate winslet?

him? is he funny or something?

  26. Nikole says:

Everyone should watch Starter for Ten. James McAvoy is adorable, Benedict Cumberbatch is hilarious, Alice Eve is amazing, and Rebecca Hall is awesome. Plus Catherine Tate and Mark Gatiss have smallish parts that make the movie so so great 🙂

  27. V4Real says:

    Posted in wrong place.

  28. Apsutter says:

I think she’s an alrught actress who has some talent but she’s totally forgettable.w

  29. Kleo says:

Whether they cheated or not, she is now the assumed homewrecker/post break up girlfriend to a man who, I’m sorry, not only looks like he could be her father but is also old enough to be her father. This is a guy who, pre-Kate, dissed marriage, so if Rebecca’s looking for a husband and kids she might be barking up the wrong tree as Sam has already been there, done that. If I were her I’d be having serious regrets as this whole situation has, in a lot of ways, overshadowed her young career. For someone who seems to pride herself on being intelligent and serious as an actress, a lot of the attention she’s been getting these past few years is tabloid fodder. If the rumors of cheating are not true I feel bad for her, though I still think she’s not too bright for starting a relationship with him anyway. However, if the rumors ARE true, well, you made your bed and now you have to lie in it – awkward pap photos included.

  30. Ally8 says:

    Odd:

    1) Rebecca’s father is a famous British theater director; so is Mendes.

    2) How awkward must it be on the last and next Bond movie, Daniel Craig being directed by a man who used to shag his wife.

    • Leah says:

Mendes said that Craig was the one who asked him to direct Bond. Weitz and Craig were friends for years before they became a couple and Mendes ran the Donmar warehouse theatre in london for a decade at that time Craig was just a jobbing british actor who worked mostly in the theatre so they most likely knew each other or did some plays together

  31. Bijlee says:

Does anyone else think him and Trey Parker could be brothers? …just me? I don’t know I see a resemblance between the two.

  32. Jayna says:

She’s one of my favorite actresses. I loved her in Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona and The Town. I could care less about her private life. She doesn’t shove it in our faces like others.

  33. loganski says:

I’ve yet to see Rebecca Hall “act” in anything. No emotion, monotone, boring.

  34. MissMary says:

I have no idea why Rebecca Hall got so much praise for Parade’s End. She’s abysmal. She has one, maybe two expressions, tops, and is shrill and dull.

  35. Ktx says:

So interesting to read that so many find her plain and a bad actress. She is my one “girl crush.” I think she is so gorgeous in an understated way, and I think she brings such depth to her roles.

  36. ichsi says:

Dear God this man has a pull. Could the women dating him be any more gorgeous? And they all have brains too! What is it about him? I wanna KNOW!!

  37. TheOriginalWaffle says:

Photo assumption says yes! They really do look in synch.

For the record, re: Mendes, I would hit it.

  38. Andrea says:

She was soo good in Parade’s End, everyone needs to watch that. And it also made me develop a crush on Cumberbatch. 🙂

  39. Dalovelee says:

#1. People are not monogamous. If people would learn to accept this fact there would be less break ups and probably more long lasting marriages because #2 marriage is not about fidelity it’s about merging your finances with another or in rich people’s cases increasing your market value via clout from whom you marry #3 Look at this man. Take away his fame and prestige what do you have a pudgy man who is looks old beyond his years. Any actress who dates him or married him was looking to boost her clout .

  40. fan says:

I never got his appeal until I saw him in the flesh at the press conference talking about Skyfall. He’s just so passionate and vivid about his work it adds to his appeal what he’s lacking in the looks departement. I can easly see why an actress wants to hook up with him.
